Unsettling as the last two games have been, Madrid have taken all six points and now a total of ten form the the first four matches. Jose Mourinho was quick to express his distaste with his team’s form, though, lamenting their ability to produce results when not at their best.

Highlighting the anti-football played by Espanyol on Tuesday night, Mourinho noted they were still able overcome their stubborn Catalan visitors. Saturday night in San Sebastian was a different story. It may have been a combination of a Champions League hangover or underestimating their newly promoted opponents, but Madrid were lucky to escape with a victory. Fans and pundits alike would agree that Real Sociedad deserved at least a share of the points.

Saturday night saw Real Sociedad, back in the top flight for the first time in three years, aggressively attacking Madrid and poised to upset the capital side giants. The Basque club wasted two phenomenal opportunities in the first period, sending Los Blancos into the locker-room undeservedly on terms. Six minutes into the second half, a brilliant strike from Angel di Maria give the visitors the advantage. The Argentine showing some inventive moves on the left to set up a truly talented chip into the back of the net.

Raul Tamudo would put Real Sociedad on terms eleven minutes later, netting the first goal against Real Madrid this season. In the end it would take some luck, a deflection loftily guiding Cristiano Ronaldo’s set piece into the back of the net, for Madrid to snatch all three points. Real Sociedad came out looking for an early advantage, and the pressure was too much for the Madrid defence. Although they did not concede, Real Sociedad’s attack highlighted the evident weaknesses that reside in Madrid’s backline. Xavi Preto raised even more questions about Marcelo’s quality as a top club left back, exposing the Brazilian on numerous occasions.

Espanyol brought a different mentality to the Bernabeu for their midweek fixture. Attempting to break Madrid’s rhythm, the style played Tuesday night was organized and what some, including the Madrid boss, would call ‘anti-football.’ By fixture’s end, three players had been sent off, and Madrid had registered an unconvincing 3-0 victory.

Ronaldo slotted home a penalty in the first half hour to give the hosts the advantage; however, the Catalonian club threatened Iker Casillas’ net on either side of the Portuguese international’s first tally of the season. Pepe was shown a second yellow at the hour mark, forcing Mourinho to bring Sami Khedira and Alvero Albeloa on in place of Mesut Ozil and Angel di Maria, respectively, to reinforce the defence. However, Ernesto Galan would see straight red for a brash tackle two minutes later, evening Espanyol’s brief numerical advantage.

The second goal was a product of magnificent vision. Cristiano Ronaldo's through ball set free Gonzalo Higuain whose calm finish would double the host’s advantage. Karim Benzema would replace the Argentine in the eightieth minute, immediately contributing as the protagonist of Madrid’s third, firing home with three minutes left from time.

Watching the match Tuesday night, it is hard not to notice the difference in attitude along the Madrid sideline; passion, it seems, has finally been restored to the Bernabeu. There no longer is a pensive, calm presence in the coach's box but that of an animated, fiery Mourinho. Obvious to all watching Tuesday night, with his team only up a goal, ‘The Special One’ was furious with his side's play. One can only begin to speculate the tirade unleashed on his players during the intermission. The quality did not significantly improve, but two more goals would seal the desired result for the hosts.

Aiming to maintain their form at the weekend, Madrid will look to continue improving in Valencia against newly promoted Levante on Saturday night. Three matches in a weeks time brings into question again the logic behind the scheduling of the Spanish league. With a massive Champions League fixture on the horizon, Madrid's depth will certainly be tested when they travel to Auxerre in a weeks time.

mourinho must understand that this is la liga and madrid has a style, that is, to please the fan and produce the result.he must find a balance and rhythmic passion to match

Samsaloon,

While you may be true, it's not Mourinho's responsibility. Madrid hired him, well aware of the style he employs on his teams. You don't hire a forward and play him as a defender. In that same manner, you don't hire a coach who is known for his defensive style of play and demand that he plays offensive. That defeats the point of hiring Mourinho in the first place, which was to help Madrid win La Liga and the Champions League.

I will agree that the performances have not been of the usual suave and panache of Madrid sides in the past. But Mourinho is a pragmatic coach, the reason for his continued success. He needs to be given time, you can see that we are much more organised at the back, not something that you normally associate with our defence. You also have to factor in that we've played quite a few games in a short space of time, with a very short amount of recovery time in between games. The players are tired, Mourinho has said as much. I feel he could rotate a little bit more, use Pedro Leon, Granero and Benzema more, as Higuain and et al look a little jaded. Winning whilst not playing well is a sign of champions.

Until we get a stronger back line madrid will be helpless against top european teams

I think Jose has done well so far. Madrid fans must be patient as he is try to build a winning team just has he did in Inter.

mourinho may not have been known for beautiful football, but the experienced tactician know how to get result with every kind of player in his lineup. he may not really be the kind of coach that can give the nine times European champions supporter the traditional attaching football. But he will surely deliver.

as much as i'd love to see real play beautiful football again, i guess this season the most important thing is winning something. that'll increase confidence & strengthen stability for sure.

It doesn't matter how Real Madrid plays at the moment but the results we earn matters a lot.Madrid really at this time does not necessarily need an entertainment football but winnings that will earn the club the title(s) at the end of the season.I think that is the major reason for hiring the 'special one'.In the long run, Mourinho may put a balance between the kind of game the fan wants and winning but at this time, he needs all the points at all cost.

Everyone does have a reasonable point, however, just like TheNamelessOne stated, everyone knew what style off football Mourinho's teams play. One thing you can not doubt about him, is that he is a proven winner. Everything else is going to fall into place, what he needed to do first was instill unity, team pride, and the desire to work for each other within the players. You can already see that slowly by slowly, last season the team seemed too disconnected with each other, no one showed much desire to fight for the team, etc. Now though, you can see them, they are almost running full force the entire game, when they make a mistake they aren't sulking, now you can actually see even the forwards coming back and playing some defense! That was a rarity if it ever happened last season. You can see that the players are actually happy and are enjoying being in a Madrid uniform. They also know that no matter what happens, they have a coach who is going to defend them.

they should purchase lavezzi or hamsik

if we can top the league with this style of football, what happens when Ronaldo and higuain hit top form? by the way i can't blve we've conceded just one goal..shows that our defense is improving.Hala madrid

madrid fans should be patient, the quality of football has improved and i know we shall win the la liga this season

Posted by Mustafa M on 09/24/2010

I think Mourinho is doing a good job, the back four is growing stronger and he is collecting the points while not playing well. In a long run, this will be decisive if he manages to take 6 points from barcelona even if not playing well, we all know the games against barcelona decided the title last season. Give him time, the guy always delivers.

we've a special team and we've a special coach;only thing that we need is to give the team and the manager enough time to form a solid winning side.we are not fine in converting chances into goals but have a look on the defensive line particularly central, mildfield and the striking force you can be conviced that we can win atleast the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE and the other cup in this season [double].
VIVA LOS BLANCOS!!!!!!

Posted by obilor alex on 09/24/2010

since the team can produce result when they are not playing well let's wait and see what happens when they start playing well. but as far as i'm concerned is only a trophy like the league and a stellar performance in the champions league(i.e getting to the semi finals at least) will help putting this team right to a logical extent. and if there men in this world that can pilot them to this height, i think on top of the list is "JOSE MOURINHO" but lets see if he can stand the test of time this time at REAL MADRID.

Posted by parjo on 09/24/2010

I remember Capello playing such 'negative' football, he won titles but got fired next season.

Posted by Sonny on 09/25/2010

Mourinho is a proven winner and i believe the madrid heirachy hired him for that same reason. Honestly madrid needed something drastic for them to be competitive in spain and europe; Mourinho fits the word.Poor football or not they are collecting the points and the desire to win is actually in the team now.

Posted by domingo on 09/25/2010

am happy with the way madrid is playing now it is a matter of time and tolerance.

Posted by JTex13 on 09/26/2010

honestly, i don't even think "the special one" can bring the glory back to the whites. they have to get rid of ronaldo, who by the way has not done a thing. ozil has been the best player so far.
