There is a trite expression that says those who do not study the past are doomed to repeat it. Hopefully, for Madrid fans, history will repeat itself this campaign.

Saturday saw Jose Mourinho record his first victory at the club since taking the reigns as manager while Los Blancos’ rivals to the North were shockingly upset by newly promoted Hercules Alicante. The Valencian club has spent the majority of their professional existence floating between the Segunda and Tercera divisions; however, after a 12 year run in the top flight saw Los Blanquiazules back down to the Segunda, the side made a brief one year return in 1996/97. Notably beating FC Barcelona twice as Real Madrid were crowned the Champions of Spain.

While it is incredibly early to begin title speculation, supporters in the Spanish capital will hope the results from the past weekend will serve as an positive omen.

Mourinho’s Madrid continues to grow as a team, looking more like a cohesive unit with every passing minute at the Bernabeu on Saturday. Ozil and Khedira made their debuts in the starting eleven, days after the Madrid boss admitted in Marca that he was having trouble communicating with the German internationals. The former’s creativity was on display as a brilliant run set-up the only goal of the game. It took a crafty save from Ricardo to deny Ronaldo after Ozil’s ball had the Portuguese poised to open the scoring for Madrid. Cristiano, however, was able to poke the rebound to an unmarked Ricardo Carvalho, the Portugal defender easily finishing to give Madrid the only goal they would need to secure all three points.

Madrid dominated both possession and attempts on net, though, both players and coach were quick to reflect they were not in their finest form. Similar to their La Liga opener at Mallorca, Madrid were unable to convert a plethora of opportunities in Saturday's 1-0 victory over Osasuna with Gonzalo Higuain the most guilty. Cristiano Ronaldo asked for patience from the supporters while hailing his compatriot's tactics as manager after the match. The Portuguese star emphasizing the most important take-away from the match, the result.

As we saw with the squad from last year, Madrid will mature throughout the season; nevertheless, it is important, throughout these early stages to still drive positive results. Unlike in Mallorca, where Madrid were unable to capitalize on their domination, Los Blancos took all three points they deserved on Saturday on their home turf. A mid-week fixture against Ajax, as the squad begins Champions League play in a very difficult group, will continue to set the tone for the season. A deep roster will help the capital side club in their quest to end a trophy drought at the Bernabeu though it is imperative that, as they continue to gel, Madrid continue to earn results.

yeah, if real's defence is starting to reap then barcelona is finished and mourinho will soon be a special one in spain as well. everyone knows what thiis guys builds fast: i.e. the defence. its defence, then midfield and striking thats mooo's principls. lets wait.............

Real's defense is of concern in the past few seasons. With Mourinho, who has excellent fame in tactical skills especially in defense, Madrid will win it all this season. Hooray Madrid ;)

Imagine a boring Real Madrid win the League title, Jose will still get the sack, ask Fabio Capello.

Having Mourinho as a coach is special because he is the special one..Very intelligent and a great tactician...Having done so good with defence and midfield but needs time for the forward to start finishing the glorious chances offered to them by the magical midfield....Hala Madrid....

There's no doubting Madrid's copious talent - players and coach both - but they need to start putting away their chances. I didn't get on the Higuain bandwagon last year because he got SO many chances, of course he's going to score - and he was the same in the WC. He needs service, and lots of it.

Madrid need to be able to put away their chances if they are going to beat top sides. They won't get a billion chances under Mourinho. Look at Inter last year - they relied on quick counter-attacks, and Milito was clinical in his finishing. I haven't seen any of the Real forward's pose that same, consistent, threat. Benzema has the talent, but who knows what's going on with him.

Until Madrid score goals from their midfield or forwards, they are second-rate in La Liga, and outsiders (Pot B) in CL.

I agree with Famz: if Mourinho bores Madrid to the title, out he goes. But anyway, their greatest need is to beat Barcelona and win..yawn.lets see the season unfold

I think we are talking about Mourinho here. The best coach there is around, acknowledged by many pundits. And if he cant give us the title, then who will? And why should he go even if he doesnt give us the title? You cant replace him with a Pellgrini and expect him to win. Its nonsense even for Perez. No way on earth will Perez will kick-out Mourinho. I don't think Perez or anyone at the board are that stupid.

Real Madrid wont be boring under Mourinho, with the attacking players at hand Mourinho's men will play beautiful and attacking football. And most importantly the defense has improved tremendously under Mourinho.... Barca beware!!!

Real madrid under jose is going to better because the team is good in defence and as you know that for a team to stand defence is important, their game is also going to be pleasing because of the talents they have.

I don't understand the hype behind jose mourinho...He is regarded as the special one for his tactics. Stacking players in their third and waiting for a counter. That might work in the EPL, but this is LA liga. Sure, it worked for him against barca in last years CL, but it's unbearable to watch this style of play. Even with all the talent at Real, it won't get utilized, and the fans will be bored to sleep.

Barca will break through jose's garbage style in both games this year. Jose won't earn as many league points as pellegrini, and he won't win any silverware.

Don't let Real's revolving door hit you on your ass on the way out jose, you might make it to a second season, but the constant domination by the hands of barca will seal your fate. Go back to the epl, with the boring defensive ball, and the countless crosses into the box. That's the only way you know how to coach, and the world knows it.

Gee sliz thats a bit rough. He has won the Champions League with 2 teams in 2 different countries. He also won the League and FA cup twice in England. Not a bad record. La liga Isn't all that. Look at the gap in points between Real, Barca and the rest of the league last season. All he really has to do is beat Barca and he has won the league. A bit of luck and be may well beat them and he is rather lucky.
