Los Blancos made another big summer splash in the transfer market again, however, this time it was not another play-maker making his way to the Bernabeu but a brash, successful coach. Moments after winning the UEFA Champions League on Real Madrid’s home soil, it became apparent that the Portuguese manager would take the reigns at the capital city club come the summer. Treble winning Inter Milan were suddenly without a coach and one can only wonder what Manuel Pellegrini, who lead Madrid to the second most points in La Liga history (unfortunately it was three points behind Barcelona), was thinking in the aftermath of the impetuous insinuation during the Champions League post-game press conference. Weeks later Pellegrini was sacked and “The Special One” hired for the Spanish giants. Ending Madrid’s recent European futility at the top of his list, Mourinho will take the helm of a talented Madrid squad looking up at an impressive, experienced Barcelona side.

There have been many words used to describe the Portuguese manager, winner of 2 Champions Leagues (Porto, Inter Milan) as well as 6 Domestic League, 3 Domestic Cup, 3 Domestic Super Cup, 2 League Cup, 1 UEFA Cup between his time spent at the aforementioned clubs and English power Chelsea; however, the majority of the banter is that of uncreative profanity or criticism. There is one big reason why Mourinho will be the perfect fit for Los Blancos. Hate or love him, it is hard to argue that he doesn’t know how to win, but it is not just his tactics that have produced so many trophies.

Jose Mourinho won his second Champions League title at the Bernabeu last May ©GettyImages

The list of clubs on his CV are the biggest name clubs in their respective counties with some of the biggest superstars in football. This leads to the same problem that has plagued the Bernabeu for the better part of a decade, the ability to manage the personalities and media. It is a talent that has not existed from a Madrid technical director in some time, which has consequently lead to their failure to live up to expectations. Mourinho’s demeanor draws the attention of the media away from his team, his players and focuses it on himself. Selfish? Egotistic? Maybe, or a brilliant maneuver to ease locker-room tension and allow the players to do what they are paid to do, play football.

New manager or not, Real Madrid still remain up to their same games in the transfer market. Though it would be nearly impossible to match the star-studded line-up brought into the capital city last summer, Mourniho and Florentio Perez have been working hand-in-hand to fill any voids the Portuguese manager may feel exist. With the club name attached to almost as many transfer rumors as Manchester City, it has not taken long for some new big names to make their way to Spain.

Angel Di Maria was the first player signed by the Spanish runners-up after a stellar performance in the World Cup. The Argentine international showed great poise and vision throughout the tournament despite lack of tactical direction from his manager. The Benefica winger will be joined in the midfield by former Spanish U-21 international Pedro Leon from Getafe as Mourinho looks to augment a midfield that hopes to compete for multiple domestic and international titles.

Sergio Canales, who was criticized by fellow players for joining Madrid at such a young age, will attempt to earn first team action after a move from Racing Santander (not a new summer signing, the deal was announced during the season last winter); however, many players around the league fear Canales will suffocate his ability to grow as a player.

And then there is the constant debate of who will and who won’t be joining Los Blancos come the start of the season in August. In the subsequent weeks to Inter Milan’s Champions League victory it seemed as if Maicon was already wearing Madrid white; however, while the rumor was quashed during the World Cup, the Brazilian defender’s agent is now saying that a move to Real Madrid is very possible. Sami Khedira, another midfielder who broke onto the international stage in South Africa , was rumored to be one of Mourniho’s targets. Stuttgart and the player in question have both denied the possibility of a transfer but the Spanish media have yet to rule anything out.

It is a similar circumstance for English left back Ashley Cole, who was rumored by Spanish captain and Real Madrid keeper Iker Casillas to be heading towards the Bernabeu. Even though Chelsea’s manager Carlos Ancelotti has negated this rumor, never say never when it comes to Florentino Perez’s checkbook. The rumors will continue and the media will fuel their uncontainable flames but until a player is signed, Madrid have their hands in too many rumors to speculate which are credible.

The More Prominent of the Speculated Transfers:
- In: Fabio Coentrao (Wingback/Benefica/Portugal), Mario Gomez (Striker/Bayern Munich/Germany), Thiago Silva (Center back/AC Milan/Brazil), and Nemanja Vidic (Center back/Manchester United/Serbia)
- Out: Guti, Drenthe, Raul (save one Marca article linking him to the MLS through the NY Red Bulls there has been little supposition as to where the Madrid legend would go), and the two Diarras

Nevertheless, Madrid, who only finished one point behind Barcelona for the La Liga title last season, will be stocked with a deadly arsenal of talent on all parts of the pitch. A fit Pepe will help bolster a much maligned defence while a return to form from Kaka and Karim Benzema will be needed if Los Blancos hope to compete with their Catalan rivals. We are slowly alleviating our World Cup hangover as all the excitement of the 2010-2011 La Liga campaign will begin in a few weeks time and the world will see just how special Mr. Mourinho can be.

I wish Mourinho successful 1st season at Madrid winning La Liga aand Champions League along with Kings Cup. Wonderful. HALA MADRID!!!

Posted by mamud o drammeh on 07/21/2010

Mourinho will prove all pundits that he will conquer La Liga come next season plus the champions league.

Posted by Visca Callifornia on 07/21/2010

Employing Mourinho's defensive diamond, Real Madrid may have more success in the Champions League this year, but they will ultimately score less goals than last year and hence not win La Liga. Barca, however, with the likes of villa and more experienced youngsters (Pedro, Bojan, Busquets), will be better and achieve more than last year. Barca will win the CL and la Liga, perhaps La Copa Del Rey ony employing bench players...

Posted by Desilolla on 07/22/2010

Sorry to correct you but Drenthe and Raul are not leaving and Lass is staying. Coeantro, Gomez(This must really be a joke, this player is terrible and useless), Silva and Vidic will NOT come.
Mou will make this team unbeatable. For the first time we will see a diciplined CR7 and Mou will play entertaining due to the fact that he has an arsenal of attacking players. But as several occations before, neither Real or Barca will win the CL.

I have transferred myself from Chelsea to Inter Milan 2 years ago, and now again to Real Madrid for only 1 reason: Jose Mourinho!

I wish him all the best in his debut season in La Liga, and believe that he will be winning treble within the first 2 seasons!

Posted by ben on 07/22/2010

we expect way too MUCH, but, i wish us all the best...

Posted by Vicken on 07/22/2010

Mourinho has already hurt Barcelona. Mourinho suckered Barca into paying $77MM for a $20MM striker ($57MM lost). Barca paid $30MM of it by giving up Eto (quality that could have gotten them past Inter and potentially an additional $50MM-$100MM from a CL Championship). Net economic loss could be as high as the $150MM that Barca is borrowing to pay back wages and shore-up finances. Even worse is that cash-strapped Barca can't afford Cesc who may become the best midfielder in the world if he works with Xavi.

Prediction: As long as Mourinho is in charge of Real, Barca will not win a La Liga or European title but maybe one King's Cup.

i like to watch the jose mourinho's team's game because he has got something for football. his technique is supberb in every game. so i used to watch chelsea's game when he was it's coach. then my interest goes in Intermilan. n now i like to watch the real madrid's every game. simply i like him very much.......his personality n specially his techniques .

barca will win nothing this coming season, 1st, many teams has learned how to play barca, 2nd opposition player's has known how to play against barca player's, most of barca players are diver's except Gerard Pique, worse of them all is little baby Andres Iniesta the highest diver in football history. lastly their dont have planB,Jose Mourinho wil work on this more and push barca aside. i used to like barca im not they fan but likes how they play football before until when this they tricks becomes too much to bear, i hate that baby called ini..... so much.

Posted by Amos on 07/22/2010

Hate or love him, Mou (as a commentator fondly calls him) is the best coach in the world. He may need a little time for the Madrid team to gel properly seeing they have been playing disjointed football for over 3yrs now.But give him 3yrs max,he'll transform Madrid into a winning team.

Posted by AlbicelesteSudAfrika on 07/22/2010

"Angel Di Maria was the first player signed by the Spanish runners-up after a stellar performance in the World Cup. The Argentine international showed great poise and vision throughout the tournament despite lack of tactical direction from his manager." - I cannot take anyone who would write such utter rubbish seriously. Anyone with half a football brain who watched Di Maria in the World Cup would have seen a player with zero footballing awareness who runs around like a headless chicken and cannot make the right decision when faced with a choice to pass or run. I watched him in person by going to every Argentina game and he was consistently the worst player on the pitch, particularly the hammering by Germany where he should have been pulled off. Maradona's biggest mistake (after leaving Zanetti & Cambiasso behind, wtf???) was playing Di Maria he is just not international quality. Aguero as a makeshift winger would have been better he actually knows how to play football.

Posted by mohammed yahaya on 07/22/2010

The man mourinho is the best in the world some hate him cuz he is a winner, but that they cannot change. i am optimistic he will take madrid to the promised land.

Posted by GODESH on 07/22/2010

let mou try his luck, but he will see what its like playing in the same league with teams like barca with humble, disciplined, talented, experienced mega stars. pellegrini was unbeaten for 15 games in a row at the santiago but when barca came it all changed. if mou sticks to his boring type of play he might have a chance of drawing in at least one classico, but it wont be good enough wen it comes to winning the league, becoz this season BARCA is scoring even more goals with villa messi pedro bojan and ibra, but at the same time conceding even less goals bcoz they are the best defensively. mou might even lose his first game away to real mallorca.

Posted by berry on 07/22/2010

the specially one comes onto the fire bench in madrid.cuz the team have alots experience and win alots before n knows football, cuz madrid they want to win n play good football n its not defensive team. and i think this time madrid will play bad football n defensive game n a fews goal to score cuz mou is not the coach he can teach to play good football n atacking football he is defensive coach all the time.with hot barca this year i think barca will take la liga very easy this season, here mou he come to spoil all his respect cuz madrid is the team they dont care what kind of coach if u lose they can kick u anytime.go barca with villa.

Posted by chimaobi on 07/22/2010

Jose Mourinho is the only way forward for us real madrid fans and we welcome him with open arms, hate him or like him, jose is a winner who have proved himself many times and we are sure to add trophy to our cabinet this season becuase Jose never fails, i mean Jose is guarantee two trophy manager a season. halala madrid we have the best coach in the world and sorry barca this is the end of your good times.

Madrid have made an approach to jose because the team need trophies but i don't expect good game from Madrid team due to mourinho game approach, we could have remain with the Chilean coach, give him another season to prove himself,

Posted by balo on 07/22/2010

Have always love want mourinho gives to the game and any team he coaches, but i think barca's mission will be too tall for him. i wish him all the best . Barca rules

Posted by femi on 07/22/2010

Mourinho has a agreat task at hand, his first season will be very tough and i hope madrid fans will be patient with him. And considering the fact that this present BARCA generation are not tired of wining trophies, the special one really has a job 2 do.

Posted by sanna boy on 07/22/2010

Mourinho is d man to watch in LaLiga i see Real has got it right dis time. I followed him fom chelsea to Inter nd now Real mardid. I know we will b d champ dis time.
UP MOURINHO...

Posted by JJ on 07/22/2010

Mourinho is brilliant. But football is about the players, and the team. The coach plays a part. But not a big one. Barca are too good for Madrid for now and possibly the next few seasons. Dream on Madrid..

Posted by Rex on 07/22/2010

Posted by umar zangina on 07/22/2010

definitely,we expect to see the best performance from the best coach of our time in the best and the most successful club in football history, but i'm afraid his game could be sometimes bouring.

Posted by Fesman on 07/22/2010

come next season, real madrid will be looking for another manager coz mourinho will be frustrated by the way the madrid hierachy behave, and still barca will win the league and madrid wont win the champions league....unless they give him two or so seasons to prove himself that hes a good coach...so will be players like kaka and benzema...coz the might start roting on the bench...forget mourinho playing alot of forwards in a game. prove me wrong madrid please.

Posted by chinedu chukwuanu on 07/22/2010

If what Madrid is looking at is someone who will not look at the big names in time of decision-making,motivate players and instil that winning mentality, then Mourinho is the best choice.I'm not sure of la liga because of the way Barca takes points from their opponents. But when it comes to Cup Challenge, the rest of the europe should watch him.
He is sure to land Madrid the uefa's biggest price, the champions league.

Posted by obasi donatus nwabueze on 07/22/2010

Mourinho will change the face of Spanish footbsll, and the fortunes of Real Madrid FC - FOR THE BETTER. God bless Jose Mourinho and grant him unprecedented success in the La Liga! Barcelona will not find a place in all of Spain to hang their hats!
UEFA and all teams in Europe beware - the Champs League will be taken by storm yet again by a less fancied tema led by a Special coach orchestrating a revolution. All the naysayers wrote Inter off, now see hgow they turned out - several players rejected by so called big clubs (Sneidjer, Eto, etc) turned out to be the greatest stars of Europe - Jose brings out the best in every palyer that works with him.

You dont know how happy ive been since I knew Mourinho became coach of inter...then he left... but he left at the right time after conquering all in milan, now he comes to madrid to show the world that barca is jsut a team of organized ballet divers!...

Posted by barca on 07/22/2010

Here's my prediction -- Madrid will win La Liga this year and possibly even the next but not the CL. Mourinho is extremely consistent but CL needs a good chunk of luck to win and that won't happen for him in Madrid like at Chelsea.

Posted by Darcey Holdem on 07/22/2010

Mourinho will not be able to win the Laliga because of Barca and Real wont win the CL because of the English powerhouses like Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal all improving and showing Real how to do things in the EPL and CL. Also Mourinho has too amny great players eg, Kaka, C.Ronlado ,Benzema, Van Der Vaart, Sergio Ramos,Casillas,M.Diarra, Higuian and Xabi Alonso.

Posted by mat on 07/22/2010

I have been a madrid fan for ever, I hate mourinho, his arrogance is annoying, a classless coach, pep is the type of coach that is an idol, mourinho is scum, his defensive style is the easy way of winning

for one im a barca fan and in this i can say that madrid need to keep a coach for more than one year.. pelligrini i think would have been your best chance if he stayed on but unfortunately he ran into the best barca team and one of the best teams in history and ran us very close tll the end... you guys are so very fickle about the champions league become the champions of your own country first..

but all the best for the madristas

DONT FORGET WE GOT SIX TROPHIES

Posted by joetex13 on 07/22/2010

i could see the diarras leaving as well as drenthe, but as far as guti and raul are concerned they sure are milking it this summer. guti has no purpose in the squad. coentrao impressed in the WC, he could overtake arbeloa, who i think brought little to the team last season. but i have to agree with some of the bloggers, di maria offered nothing to Argentina. he's a joke just like maradona. i didn't understand the concept of this signing. the last thing madrid needed was another forward. revamp the def-midfield and the cen-backs. vidic is okay with me!

Posted by Ron on 07/23/2010

This only a temporary job, he wants to return to England. He will be coaching at Manchester United before too long.

Posted by lydje at KLCC on 07/23/2010

Mourinho needed 2 years to win UCL at Porto and Inter. But never won during his X years (forget the exact) tenure in Chelsea.
So, I don't think he'll win it in his 1st year at Bernebeau esp. since David Villa joined the "already-completed" Barca team.
I might be wrong..
Anyway, does he really have a clause in the contract mentioning he can leave at the end of each season without needs to pay/be paid compensation? Sound inviting..

Posted by Noel on 07/23/2010

Mourinho is a great coach, no doubt abt it. I doubt if he can win the CL for Madrid, he has won 2 CL's but when he plays teams coached by like wise coach, he is not for it aka Benitez. Also, Madrid do not have players who can defend their hearts out like Inter. You wouldtn see C. Ronaldo, Kaka, Higuain playing 90 mins in their own half. Guardiola in his 2 seasons has won a CL and made it to the semis, I dont see whey he cannot win the CL given that he has signed a goal machine in Villa.

Posted by ibrahim nafiu on 07/23/2010

I always love mourinho because he has made chelsea the best team in england and i will keep on loving him and the best ever coach is the special one,a team without jose is nothing in world and i know and i believe jose will make barca know that messi is not the best player because jose will bring the difficulties for messi at spain and all those defenders that always allow messi to passed through them any more...........thanks jose for making my best team great today and that is chelsea........always be a great one and special forever..........

All they got to is not fall asleep will watching barca pass and pass the ball all the way back in there deffence and they will be fine because really I think barca beats teams by boring them with all that passing in the back were there safe and when the other team is about to die of bordom they send the midget messi to go score a goal also real madrid should of bought frank ribery

Great teams have failed because of not having good coaching. A team is not formed with just good players. They need smart managers, a supportive fanbase, & good coaching. Mourinho is the best coach in the world; hands down. He has only lost 1 home game in his entire career as a coach. He has an impressive record. Whatever he touches turns to gold. With a tactical coaching ability like no other, he has taken decent looking squads to championship glory . He won everything with Porto in Portugal, Chelsea in England, everything with Inter in Italy, and now he will make Real Madrid a definite better team than Barcelona. Please believe me when i say this ... Give the man 2 years and they will be either Spanish or European champs.

I'm just wondering how would the fans respond to "The Special One" bringing his unintuitive, unimaginative winning brand to Madrid? Winning is the objective but it should be done in style as is Real's tradition.

La Liga is going to expand Asia market. If they want to succeed they have to adjust the game timing first as British Premier league.
