Barcelona completed the double over Real Madrid after winning the second leg of the highly anticipated El Clasico on Saturday night. Barcelona, who trounced English side Arsenal in mid-week via four goals from Leo Messi, showed again why they are considered the best in the world this weekend at the Bernabeu.

The win epitomized the 09-10 La Liga season in many ways with lapses in Madrid’s defensive form allowing Barcelona their chances, possession domination from the Catalans and the inability to finish from Madrid’s high-powered attack. Seven games remain in the campaign but falling three points behind and needing four to overtake the '08-'09 Champions this late in the year may prove to be too much for Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

Real Madrid’s perfect home record and twelve straight league victories was emphatically brought to an end as Pep Guardiola’s men were allowed played their game on Los Blancos’ home turf. Dictating the flow of the game with precision passing, Barcelona may not have provided the majority of threats on goal but when given the opportunity, finished with professional poise. Los Blancos, on the other hand, were unable to convert any of their positive chances into quality attempts on target. Ronaldo played well on the wing but it often seemed if he was the only one on the pitch, unable to find help from any of his team-mates.

The introduction of Raul provided a brief spark for the home side, his goal only disallowed after a deplorable attempt of possession by Karim Benzema. Gonzalo Higuain, Madrid’s leading scorer, was absent for most of the game as well; however, Leo Messi continued his stellar form, scoring a little after the half an hour mark. The Argentine’s quickness is only beaten by his composure on the ball. His calm finish to give the Catalan side the lead was the type of quality absent from Pellegrini’s men. Ten minutes into the second half, Pedro would slot home a brilliant ball from Xavi that set him one-on-one with Casillas to double the visitor’s lead. Although Barcelona dominated possession Madrid were not short of opportunities, it was their poor finishing that ultimately cost them in Saturday’s Clasico.

The league is still technically within reach but Madrid’s performance on Saturday night has greatly hindered the chance at any trophies finding their way to the Bernabeu this season. Ronaldo was quick to reassure the Real Madrid faithful that they can still win the league; however, Spanish publication Marca has already begun the debate over who will be Pellegrini’s successor. The Madrid oriented publication announcing that, save ‘a miracle in the league,’ the Chilean will not be at the helm for the 2010-2011 campaign. I maintain the same opinion that firing the coach will not solve any problems.

Pellegrini inherited a team full of newcomers and has kept them on pace with an experienced, championship winning Barcelona team. Granted there have been some greatly disappointing moments (both Cup exits), Madrid seem to be finding their niche and a change in management will only hinder the team at the onset of the next year. Coupled with rumours that Madrid’s front office are ready for another summer spending spree with names like Ribery, David Villa and Cesc filling the pages of the Spanish press, Madrid are again wrongly looking for the quick-fix solution.

Madrid are finally coming together and finding their form, despite Saturday’s loss. If Perez were wise he would keep the team as is and give Pellegrini another chance at some trophies. Clearly the tactics of sacking coaches and buying the top market players has not brought any success to the Bernabeu the past few years. Why not change the mentality and try and win with consistency? Barcelona win because they play as a team, not individuals. It is a formula that clearly works, so, when will it be realized by the capital side giants?

All Madrid can do for the remaining seven games is focus on themselves, strive for a positive result from each fixture, and hope that Barcelona falter along the way; however, making up the four points necessary for the league title may be too tall an order for Cristiano Ronaldo and company.

It is sad that we have to lose again to Barcelona. To win the leaque is going to be a tall order. That is football anyway, you win some you lose some. However,Real Madrid should now get its heart together and starts preparing for next season, changing composition of a team is not a good policy. This team, if left alone will be a strong force in Europe next season. The coach should be left alone to mould a team instead of chaging coaches like a prostitute that needed a quick attention.Madrid needs to be wise.Consistency wins competitions not wavering policies. No matter what,I am a fan of Madrid for life.

The outcome of the match is a shame to madrid fans globally.
i'll put the blame on the coach. Guti Haz should've started the match or introduced earlier. He's the only reliable playmaker since kaka will not play...Ronaldo tried his best - falling back to win ball from opponents. He overworked himself.

Absolutely agreed ! cant have another summer spending spree from madrid which would unbalance the market !
they need to continue wid pellegrini

Posted by stevedubyapdx on 04/12/2010

I'm a Barca fan, and agree that Madrid's poor finishing was certainly the single biggest reason for their loss. ESPN's numbers indicate that Real outshot Barca 16 to 8, and had more shots on goal as well...7 to 4. Was it just me, or did at least 6 of those 7 go straight at Victor Valdes' hands? During the game, I kept thinking, "Goodness, this has to be Madrid's worst shooting performance of the year." I figured they'd connect eventually, but their luck was just not there.

Posted by j on 04/13/2010

maybe it was barcelona's day but still there is a chance for madrid.

Posted by udobata on 04/13/2010

i do not think buying more players will solve the issue. the coach should be given another opporturnity again as this is his first start with the stars. meanwhile, i will still blame him for the loss in the bernabeu. he kept the right guys on the bench, and expected a miracle which is wrong! perez, please calm down i stil believe in these guys. they will surely perform

Posted by Changi on 04/13/2010

I have been a Madrid fan for the last 10 years, but the last 6 have been particularly frustrating. I would call Perez a rather disturbing influence.

I agree that going to the transfer market is no solution, but they have to get a defensive mid player. They have never been able to replace makelele. Maybe, they will try to get Mascherano in. And I wouldn't be surprised if Benitez or Mourinho come in either..

This is Madrid. Even if its the right thing to do, the coach staying on after a trophy-less year simply does not happen here.

"The league is still technically within reach of Real Madrid" but practically its out of reach. Barcelona have to draw at least two game to make that happen. but i am sorry to say it will not going happen, only god can help madrid. Ronaldo and Higuaín scored some brilliant goals in other games, but you can't expect that they will to that in every game. no one else is out there who can score goals in a big game like Barcelona.

Madrid spends a lot of money to bring players who can score goals, i appreciate that but its also important to bring some players who can defend other teams from scoring. from this point of view if madrid wants to change the coach then go for José Mourinho, but no one else.

If madrid officials think that they only wants to make business then everything is fine, they are doing it perfectly. But they are failing to make a team who can win Trophies for them.

Money dose not win trophys! Real are a bunch of
individuals with out any team chemistry or plan. Being a Barca fan I was so happy to see CR9 go to Madrid! Dont put the blame on the coach At Madrid it is all about the stars and individuals. This is the circus that has become Real Madrid.

Barcalona are a team. The players believe in the system, and thier coach. Pep has confidence in his players. He has had to shuffle his line up many times this year. Each time the players respond! They do it with home grown talent Xavi, Pedro, iniesta, Messi came to barca when he was 14 years old.

In Short Barca does it the right way, and have been doing so for many years.Playing wanderful attacking soccer. Louie Van Gaal did it, Frank Rigkard did it, and now pep has taken it to a new level! As for Messi vs CR9 No contest. At one point Madrid broke out on a break, and it was Messi spriting Back to help break it up. On the other end we CR9 throwing is arms up whinning!

Posted by James on 04/13/2010

I think it has been clearly demonstrated that money does not buy everything. What we need is a team and not a collection of football players.I think also that the coach should be retained and given enough time to build a team.

Posted by paul on 04/13/2010

So, you guys were watching a different game from me, then? Messi had two clear oprotunities late on when he should have scored: I think he didn't realize that he had so much space and time. That's the defences fault and should have been punished. 0-4 would have been a bit unfair, but not overly so. And the penalty he was denied in the 1st half.
In the end Barca won because they play a brand of football that suffocates the opposition through possession that can be beautiful / terrible to watch, depending upon your allegiance. Xavi is in a class of his own, the fulcrum about which it all turns. Madrid still haven't managed to accomplish similar, although Alonso on his day is good enough, they still lack the "break-up man", the defensive midfielder that allows him to play.
In the end the best team won, simple as that. Looking forward to winning the Champions League in Madrid: will laugh and laugh at Perez's face for that one.

Posted by lezino on 04/13/2010

i am a madrid fan, our team lost because of our inability to finish properly and poor defending, think something needs to be done defensively, and the the strikers should try hard in converting some of this chances

Posted by sun on 04/13/2010

why do all world class forwards slowly get bad after they join Madrid? This has been evident for the past few seasons.
Overall most of Real Madrid's players played really badly in this match but it was good to see Ronaldo have a good game...

Posted by amirehe on 04/13/2010

RM is like a circus team....Only for money and benefit for 'THEY', not for the fan. Please win a trophy...at least one for next year... We are your fans, we need something to make us proud of RM....

Posted by Claudius Mugota on 04/13/2010

We lost because we ddnt take our chances. Thats water under the bridge. What we need is a world class defender and a ball winner. Let not change the coach because I like Pellegrini's style of play. Give him 1 more year and this team will be unstoppable!!!!!! So many new players coming in and we are just 3 points behind Barca who have been togather for yrs and yrs..... Perez please give the coach time

Posted by Deni Zarki on 04/13/2010

I have no comments for Barca's way of playing football, PURE PERFECTION!!! As for Real Madrid, each game they must play with defensive midfilder. They didn't play Gago all season, and suddenly he is playing in the most important game of the season.First mistake! Gago is very weak defensive midfilder. When you have players like Lassana and Mamadou Diara as defensive midfilder, you must play them or you will lose.Especialy against Barca! If you want to beat Barca in their own game, play with 3 defensive midfilders.Arsenal tried to play attacking football against Barca and look what happened with them.Real Madrid have a great team and great players, but they need a coach who understand football tactics, and Pellegrini is not one of them!!! Only Mourinho and Benitez can be the key for GREAT REAL MADRID!!!

Posted by Tonye Preghafi on 04/13/2010

I'm one that never gives up. Hala Madrid. But the defeat to Barca was quite painful. The match at the Nou Camp was much closer. I felt the team selection did Pellegrini more harm than good, and the changes he made were late. However, there's still 21points. We hope Barca drops at least 4points while we win all the remaining matches.

Posted by o'bedlam on 04/13/2010

what a grave we have dug for ourselves! what i can't fathom is why gago started in the midfield in the first place? pellegrini really disappointed the fans by bringing him in, when what real really needed was a stout defender like lass giving the support to alonso in the middle. this game was such a disappointment. i fear another massive overhaul which will inevitably destroy the team system from the inside. it took them so long to find their niche, and i think perez will think nothing of it.

Posted by adams on 04/13/2010

Buying ronaldo was a big mistake for real madrid.
And ronaldo leaving Man U was a bad idea for him. He cant play as he wants to when he plays in spain. England in the best plays for a good play to play and real madrid is not the palce for him. evidence is Figo, Beckham and all of the other galacticos including Van nistelrooy. All i can say to him is that he should either come back or good luck.

Posted by Chambiyor Bridges Jr. on 04/13/2010

we lost the game but that is not the end we have seven games to play. we need to give our player a chance so that they can do the right thing for this club. I'M sure by the next season no club will be able to beat us in la liga or UEFA.

Posted by Alimi Fatai on 04/13/2010

I don't want to blame anybody for the loss. All we need do is to make sure we win the rest of the games, who knows Barca might slip and if they don't we should just keep getting better. then by next season the Galacticos will definitely conquer the world if we do not make many changes in the team...

Posted by ADEEKO ROTIMI on 04/13/2010

the coach must be sacked, his tactice to the game are always wrong. i dont understand how and why he refuse to start guti and lass. we need a coach like mourinho in madrid, then, pelegrini should please stop using higuain because he has proven again that is not the type of sriker madrid need. he wasted our chances against lyon and now barca. karim benzema should be given more chance.

After Mourinho stops Barcelona from reaching the Champions League final and defiling the Bernabeu.
My bet is Mourinho's Inter is a team well balanced tactically to win the whole European competition... After he does that, the 'special one' would come to Madrid. For stopping Barcelona winning a champions league title on our turf is reason enough for Mourinho to be our coach for next year. The 'special one' is our quick fix. I can only see domination with Mourinho at the helm. This is Madrid, our whole history have been changing players and changing coaches if they do not perform, however we have still won the most titles in world fooball. Football is cycles, Barcelona is going through a golden cycle but it will cycle back to Madrid eventually...Mourinho at Madrid spells the end for Barcelona. Some may say Barcelona is a treble winning side so Madrid cannot, but like I said football is cycles and dont forget that Barcelona dodged a bullet at Stamford Bridg

Pele is angered by the praise being given to Messi as the "greatest player ever", he might not be now, but he will be in the not so distant future. The dynamics of football is changing the "Galaticos concept" is evidently NOT EFFECTIVE. The football talent pool is getting bigger, price is becoming less of a factor in finding talent. Besides I personally believe there is a plateau to how good a team can get... after that its just up to good coaching and team chemistry.

Posted by franco[mal] on 04/14/2010

Pep Guardiola has done his homework well to outfox Pellegrini using possesion, quick interchange passing and short delivery to made Real Madrid marking uneffective which gave in preschool goals. Pellegrini must take some cue from this!

Posted by Bwana on 04/14/2010

Madrid should not change anything. let the team gel, it will surely be a force to reckon with next season.

Posted by jaume on 04/14/2010

I think a lot of the credit for Barcelona should go to Victor Valdes. Until last season he was still being criticized for being "inconsistent", which was a reputation he earned when he came to the first team at the tender age of 18. Over the years, however, Valdes has been stellar in every important match Barcelona have played (the final against Arsenal for the CL in '06,semis against Chelsea last season and El Clasico on saturday night come to mind). He has come a long way...and better yet he only seems to improve and grow more confident each day. I agree that Spain should try to preserve its Euro-winning side as much as possible, but if any change is made that needs to be the addition of Valdes to the national side.

Posted by ezfulus on 04/14/2010

i agree that poor finishing cost real, and we should give credit to valdes too but then again the ones that vdv & higuain missed, man those were really bad misses especially vdv's. i understand he's not a true forward, but still a 1 on 1 like that is supposed to be finished with a goal or at least or more outstanding save from the keeper!

Posted by ALVIN ZULU on 04/14/2010

POOR TACTICS COST US AGAIN. WHEN A TEAM HAS AN ARCHITECT LIKE XAVI YOU NEED TO CLAMP HIM DOWN BY FIELDING TOUGH-AS-NAILS PLAYERS. WHY LEAVE THE TWO DIARRAS ON THE BENCH.FURTHERMORE WE HAVE HAD NO PLAYMAKER SINCE ZIDANE.RONNIE WAS ALONE PLAYING ALONGSIDE 'HEADLESS CHICKENS' WHY NOT FEATURE GUTI AND HAVE MORE PRECISE PASSING IN MIDFIELD? EL CLASICO IS A BIG GAME AND REQUIRES BIG GAME PALYERS LIKE RAUL. WHATEVER OTHERS THINK. RAUL IS A LEGEND AND BARCA RESPECT HIM FOR THE DAMAGE HE HAS DONE TO THEM IN THE PAST.WHY DIDN'T HE START AND ONLY BRING HIGUAIN FROM THE BENCH? RAUL SHOULD NOT GO COZ THEN WE SHALL LOSE PLAYERS WHO UNDERSTAND THE CULTURE AND HERITAGE OF THE CLUB. YOU NEED LOYALTY AND RAUL AND GUTI HAVE IT IN ABUNDANCE. CAN ANYONE FORESEE PUYOL OR XAVI LEAVE BARCA? NO! WHY? COZ THEY ARE TRUE CATALANS WHO BEAR THEIR CLUB'S IDENTITY! LETS JUST SHORE UP OUR TEAM AND NO MORE RIDICULOUS BUYS.

Posted by faizal on 04/14/2010

the barca win didnt have anything to do with messi..it's all about the team work comprises accurate passing, clever changes in tactics n superb defending...messi was not in the game at all times but proved unstoppable if given chances & pace to score...RM has its own game anyway..but failed to score esp. VDVart's face to face encounter with VValdes..the fair score should be Barca 4 (Messi-3, Pedro-1) RM 1 (VDVart-1)...It's so obvious Barca is steps above RM in every departments...messi's magic is actually created by one name..its XAVI

Posted by Habiby on 04/14/2010

Everyone should understand that Madrid is a Team in transition,"rome wasn't buildt in a day" and its going 2 take Madrid at least two more years to really be a dominant super power like they where during the first Galactico stint,so for all Madrid fans, have patience! the team played as they where selected to do so against barcelona but inevitably the better and most composed side won,but the mood at the Madrid camp seems high in confidence still,so i wouldn't underrate madrid turning the tables and picking the trophy this season, cause they have the will and are capable of doing so,"a wounded lion would tear apart a bull elephant to save its life" go Madrid,go Galacticos...

Posted by John on 04/14/2010

All Madrid needs is not to change the coach nor bringing in a new set of players, just a little bit of confidence in big games and patience with the current team. i think if we retain the same squad and just bring in one or two reinforcements, particularly a good defensive midfielder to partner xabi, next season we would be a force to reckon with. PEREZ DON'T BRING IN A NEW SUPERSTAR OR CHANGE THE COACH !

Posted by Brian on 04/14/2010

I saw from the start that CR9 looked like he was trying "too hard." I wondered why he seemed so tense and I think now I know - he knew he didn't have the support he needed to beat Barca. I think Barca knows who they are, they know their roles, and trust that their system will win. Real doesn't have that identity (yet), but they have the players - question is if Pelligrini has the support and the smarts to mold them into a better system of play.

Posted by Nigel De Silva on 04/14/2010

The perspectives on Gago are correct. Not only is he weak defensively, he exudes a lack of confidence. After the last league game performance by Mahmadou Diarra, why was he left out? Madrid twice failed to shut down the true X-factor...XAVI. Lastly, Gonzalo Higuain is not a big game player (a la VS LYON),Benzema needs to partner CR9 going forward. No way will Maradonna start G.H.ahead of Tevez.

Posted by kasonde on 04/15/2010

perez and valdano are the one to blame, they sold ajen robben reals best player, he has not been replaced. pellegrini should be fired because he lost 4-0 to 3rd division team and has poor tactics, kaka is attacking midfieder not a winger, ronaldo is right winger not striker if ronaldo is a striker who will be in the winger to pass balls. he also refused to use benzema, higauin cannot play aganist big teams: barcelona, lyon, ac milan he was the worse player. benzema should have started along side higauin. another reason why pellgrini is useless is cuz he used gago instead of the two dairras or guti.real madrid definitely need a new coach someone who can use players right and who can change tactics. someone like benitez or scolari. real madrid also need to sell players like gago, drerthere, guti and Raul. then they should buy a left back, left winger maybe silva or hazard. bring canales and maybe sell or loan benzema or exchange him for pato because real need a striker

Posted by o'bedlam on 04/15/2010

adams you're just mad because your boys are losing the race to chelsea right now, and things don't look good for man untd. to win the premier league. ronaldo was a great sign for madrid. madrid is the glitz and glamour of european football, the new york yankees of football if you will, he's their a-rod!

Posted by Jide on 04/15/2010

Madrid lost to Barca tactically. The two Diarras should have started with Guti and Alonso in midfield.

Van Der Vaart and Gago had no business playing in the game not to say for so long.

While i think that Realmadrid should find some consistency both in the coaching role and the team, I am not sure that Pellegrini is the right man to deliver the goods.

Realmadrid needs to buy a playmaker and a left wing back.

Gago, Metzelder, Drenthe should be allowed to go ou on loan next season.

Posted by joetex13 on 04/17/2010

what's the deal with schuster saying that mourinho doesn't have the mentality or philosophy that would prevent him from performing well with Madrid? That's the biggest load of lies i've ever heard! everyone knows that mourinho has the biggest ego in serie a, which is the reason why he has gotten in trouble so many times this season. real madrid needs a big ego (Mourinho) that can rule over numerous egos (Ronaldo, Ramos, Kaka, Benzema). Mourinho can make it work!

Posted by haydara on 08/28/2010

is madrid expending alot of money and so many super stars to face and beat Barca on? or going to face also other big europian clubs in europian competitons and win titles?
why are they so confused with Barca victory over them?
Barca is always Barca, Barca has the ability to produce more quality young players with out expending alot of money and bringing more players out of the club.
