Top of the table. Thirteen games still remain in this stirring 2009-2010 campaign but for now, Madrid control their own destiny.
A few weeks ago I wondered if Barcelona’s form would ever falter to even afford Los Blancos the opportunity to close the gap; however, that was before a string of injuries depleted the Catalan club’s strength. A subsequent drop in form has lead to some surprising upsets, and Barcelona have now relinquished their five-point lead of La Liga to the capital side club.
After fifty-two minutes it certainly did not seem as if Madrid were going to be able to take advantage of Barcelona’s 2-2 draw at Almeria. Xabi Alonso mistakenly knocked into his own net after only ten minutes. Only seven minutes into the second half, a bit of confusion between Iker Casillas and Alonso allowed a Ivica Dragutinovic set piece to sneak past Spain’s number one.
Sevilla may have lead for the first hour of the match; however, the game was still dominated by Real in both possession and opportunities. Controlling the ball for almost two thirds of the game and out shooting the Andalucian side 34-2, it was a combination of Andres Palop’s efficiency and poor finishing that kept the home side at bay in the first half.
Gonzalo Higuain, although not on the score sheet, played a crucial role in Madrid’s victory. Winning possession back for the home side, the Argentine international found Marcelo whose cross was put home by Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo, halving the visitor’s advantage on sixty minutes. Less than four minutes later Pellegrini’s side would equalize.
Ramos, the author of the second Madrid goal, sent an injury time cross onto the head of Higuain, who hit the woodwork. Palop could only parry the ball to the feet of substitute Rafael Van der Vaart, who poked home the winner.

This is not a game Real would have won four or five months ago, not a chance, but the performance from Los Blancos on Saturday night is just another testament to the improvements this squad has made throughout the season.
True, there were a lot of new faces last August when the campaign started but it seems as if the capital city club has come together at just the right time. Down two goals to a strong club, who had defeated them earlier in the season, Real Madrid did not accept defeat; instead, they did something about it.
The performance and ability to over come adversity shown Saturday night is the exact mentality and quality needed if trophies are going to make their way to the Bernabeu this season.
Pellegrini’s men will have to carry the momentum from such an emotional win into Wednesday night’s second leg against Lyon where the French side are ahead 1-0 on aggregate. By no means an insurmountable disadvantage but Madrid will, nonetheless, need to overcome it if they wish to move to the quarter-final stage of the Champions League for the first time since 2003-2004.

Real Madrid showed fight and grit against Seville and they are legitimate contenders for the title, but the quality of their play in that game and the greatness of the "remontada" (comeback) have been largely overblown. Seville's coach went out of his way to heap praise on this team, which is indeed a potential juggernaut, but he seemed to neglect the fact that his own squad looked like deer in the headlights of an oncoming car: scared stiff. The defense seemed excessively bunched in in the wrong places, lethargically slow, and completely unresponsive at times. Meanwhile, the attacking portion of the team made unimaginative passes and gave little support to the wings (Navas and the other) and Kanoute, who seemed like he was stranded on a deserted island with a ball. This was clearly not the nimble, imaginative Seville of the first leg match.
That said, Real Madrid seem to notch it up an extra gear at home and display amazing speed and verticality with the ball. Barça should worry.

Pellegrini should start keeping Kaka on the bench. For tonight, Kaka starts on the bench, Midfield should be Guti, Granero, Lassana Diarra, Raul. Attack: Ronaldo, Higuain.
No Kaka in the first half at all.

Madrid now, is becoming a tough side to beat. I forsee the same edition of what happened to Sevilla to that of Lyon.
They're going to concede not less than 3 goals at the Bernabeu. And i'm sure Madrid will definitely put on a good show.

I think Real Madrid has come of age. But the taste of the pudding is in the eating. Madrid should replicate their fine form the the la liga in the bigger stage - the champions league.
Kaka and Ronaldo should tell the world that they are a lot more than what their detractors think about them.
Lass, Higuan, Ramos et al are expected to fire Madrid into the next stage of the competition.
Hala Madrid, the Champions of European football

With the last performance of Real Madrid against Sevilla Fc, I believe Madrid will beat Lyon by more than 3 goals. All Real Madrid Players are now in top form to beat any team. Ronaldo, Kaka, Huguian are all in readiness to put Lyon out of the champion League.

I believe this is Madrid's season to show the world that they are the best Club in the World.
Bravo the "Glaticos" Madrid showed determination, class and true soccer.
The Resilence, performance, quality and ability to over come adversity shown on saturday must have sent a clear message to those pretending to compete with Real Madrid this season. Real Madrid seem to notch it up an extra gear at home were they display amazing speed and quality.
Barcelona and other pretenders should be preparing to hand over the trophies already.

@ infamous:
you should really pay more attention to the teams before you go declare Barca are going to be 5th and you guys are going to win everything in sight, oh wait only Barca did that.
Barca now are playing their worst football ever, and according to all including the Madrid manager this is the best this team has played in 15 years. Yet you are only ahead by goal deferential and losing to Barca head to head, if you also noticed this is the 1st touch team Madrid beats this season and they were missing their top striker. again a weakened top team this team has to come back from 2 down, no doubt there are top class players there and they are starting to jell now how ever I would not go as far as saying Barca will be 5th and you are gonna get it all. Remember you still have 3 top teams in la liga to face and you are one goal behind in CL.

Barca and its fans should keep watching as we do our thing

ahh not really, since they have nothing to prove and did not spend 250 mil to try and win something only to be beaten by a 3rd devision team. you guys did not think we forgot that one did you?

Real are out! That is absolutely fantastic news. They can decide this summer if they should simply try to buy their way to the CL final next season.

Ahem. Real Madrid just got knocked out of the Champions League. That's what arrogance does to you. Not even on away goals only, but a straight-up aggregate defeat.
We sure were watching as you did your thing, smashing Lyon into pieces.

I thought mighty Madrid would demolish little Lyon but it turned out the other way, what a pity with all the stars. Is it the fault of the players or the coach? Perez do something we cant tolerate this any longer. We are badly in need of some trophies. I am a Madrid fan and i don't like what is happening.

Indeed, the Real Madrid quick exit in Champions is disappointing and surprising. But, Lyon was better fit than Seville and played with courage and some tactical strategy, as displayed in the second half.
What Real needs is long-term vision and lots of patience. If you state the goal (trophies) without setting out a well-laid plan to reach it, then you are lost and will most likely achieve modest results, just as we have seen from the Merengues these past 8 years or so.
This means truly evaluating your coaching situation and not making a precipitous decision such as sacking Peregrini for this disappointment. Jorge Valdano, someone with rare vision and patience within the Real Madrid establishment, believes in the Chilean coach and that has to mean something.
It also means creating a true identity with the players you have - defining the style of play and the game strategies. Not just buying guys and haphazardly hoping this is will solve all your problems.
Patience, Real Madrid
