Pellegrini’s side kept pace with Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona after a comfortable victory on Saturday night over Espanyol. The 3-0 win maintained Real’s place in the table five points behind holders Barcelona, who beat Getafe.

Preserving their perfect home record, the question looming is not whether or not Madrid have the quality to surpass Barcelona but will Barcelona, who have yet to lose in the league, give the capital club the opportunity to gain ground on the Catalans.

The second weekend in April meeting between the two clubs may very well decide the fate of the league. There is a lot of football to be played but if Pellegrini's Madrid can stay on the heels of Barcelona and take three points in the second leg of El Clasico then the league will certainly be up for grabs. Conversely, if Barcelona can separate themselves by a few points or take three at the Santiago Bernabeu then the league may well be decided April 11th.

Madrid's second half schedule is significantly easier than the Catalans, playing the majority of the 'tougher clubs' at home but Barcelona have proven they can win even when not at their best or short handed, as was demonstrated Saturday night. There are still a lot of questions to be answered this season, but if Madrid want to bring the cup back to the capital they cannot afford to fall too far behind the leaders.

Leading scorer Gonazlo Higuain made his return from injury as a substitute for Karim Benzema, adding an exclamation point to Madrid's victory in the final minutes with a superb finish. Controlling a long ball marvelously, the Argentine sidestepped around Carlos Kameni to easily slide home Madrid's third. The French international, however, followed up his double at La Coruna with the sort of lackluster performance that has become all too consistent at the Bernabeu this season.

Sergio Ramos put the home side on top early, a lead Los Blancos were never in danger of losing, while Raul was excellent up front, threatening the Espanyol net on numerous occasions. Carlos Kameni was superb in goal for the Barcelona club, keeping the score respectable as Real constantly peppered his net with shots. The Cameroon international could only do so much as Kaka doubled the host's lead after a Raul header was spectacular parried to the Brazilians foot, but it was Kameni who kept the deficit reasonable throughout the match.

Real Madrid continue their signs of improvement, putting together consecutive impressive victories in the absence of Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo. The team's form is improving week by week as they increasingly dominate possession, controlling the pace of the game from start to finish. With a weekend trip to Xerez and the beginning of the Champion League knockout stage next Tuesday, the next few weeks have the potential to be very telling for the success of Madrid's 2009-2010 campaign; nonetheless, the league's destiny is in Barcelona's hands, for now, a very disconcerting fact for any Madrid supporter.

Though i do not support Barcelona, they are really the team to win if anyone should win the Liga

Granero's performance deserves some credit at least

Madrid will eventually win the league...Barca will fall on April 11..we are now playing as a team, we are one, we are champions for real. Madrid for life!.

Agreed, Granero's play this match was very good. Sergio Ramos' versatility in the central defense has been wonderful as well (aside from the one mistake last week), it seems like he's been playing with a renewed "love" for the game. He's making a strong case for staying there even when all these injuries are done with.

I am a die-hard Madridista and I have faith in my team. What is cardinal is the players to be consistent and play to their strengths. I believe with the depth in the squad, we can grab both titles from Barca (La Liga and the Champs league). As the season wears on I would like to see more of Xabi Alonso and Drenthe in the attacking scope of the game plan (Xabi as the ball-distributor alongside Kaka and Drenthe playing out on the left flank). However my dream line-up appears like this: CASSILAS - RAMOS; PEPE; ALBIOL; MARCELO - LASS; KAKA; DRENTHE- RONALDO; RAUL; BENZEMA. With such a long campaign ahead of us seasoned players like Raul and Guti can spur the team on. They have done it before. I can only hope for a steely resolve from the whole team so that we can silence our critics; the people that think 'los Galacticos' are impotent! We must lift the Champions League trophy on home soil!!!

I also am a fanatic for the Merengues. They are playing very well as a team of late even though they tend to ease off the gas after about 60 minutes. If they can keep their concentration for the full 90 and go for the jugular and finish teams off by the 60th minute, they will be unbeatable. In regards to Alvin's comment, I think he's smoking something if he thinks Raul should be ahead of el Pipita Higuain! And Drenthe in the starting line up! Wow! You need help my friend. Here's a more realistic dream line up if that makes sense
Casillas
Ramos Pepe Albiol Arebeloa

Lass Xabi Alonso Guti

Kaka

CR9 Higuain

Hala Madrid!!!

Strange that the 2 "Die Hard" Madrid fans have each misspelled one of their "own" players name... That's Casillas and Arbeloa (yes indeed Kiko when comparing Madrid to FCB, they "arebeloas" in la liga!!!!).

Also Alvin (any more chipmunks there?), for the love of GOD do you think that Drenthe has what it takes to be in the first team and omitting your top scorer Higuain and compass Xabi Alonso? Hmm that's what I fear from most (Get) Real Madrid fans... a lack if attention to detail (just like the team)and big signings just mask over these facts. Also Pepe is out. So dream on if you want to talk about this season. I like Lass tho, your players are class, but selfish (i.e. Benzema).

Sorry but FCB have just got more on paper, on the pitch, in the dressing room, on the coaching staff and in the football philosophy area than any other team.

Punto y final.
