Coming into Sunday night's clash with Sevilla there had been many questions about the strength of the Real Madrid back line; however, doubts aside, the boys in white had not conceded a league goal in over 400 minutes. After a commendable midweek performance in the Champions League, the Real Madrid defense was dismal and lackadaisical at the Sanchez Pizjuan on Sunday night, conceding two easy goals and three points to the home side.

Sevilla executed their game with great precision, spreading the ball wide and crossing into the area with great success. It was via such tactics that Sevilla were able to score both of their goals. As Marcelo watched a ball sail towards the far post, Jesus Navas came charging from behind, beating the Brazilian international to the ball, to head Sevilla into the lead on 33 minutes.

Crosses finding open Sevillistas was a reoccurring theme of the first half as the home side keep constant pressure on Iker Casillas. Were it not for some acrobatics from the Spaniard, the Andalucian side would have surely scored two more goals either side of the half time break as well. Pepe would draw the visitors level three minutes into the second half from a well struck Guti set piece, moments after Casillas kept out what was surely a second goal for the hosts.

Renato would head home a well-deserved winner less than twenty minutes later as he finished from an unmarked position on the top of the six-yard box. Pellegrini acknowledged the obvious after the game; Sevilla earned a justified three points and the ease of the Andalucian goals were of great concern. And on more than just the scoring plays, the defense of Real Madrid were unorganised bystanders, re-emphasizing again the problems at the back Los Blancos have been having.

Playing without Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo, who is recovering from a midweek ankle injury, Madrid had issues elsewhere on the pitch as well. Karim Benzema was not a threat at the top, striking mostly air on a great opportunity from five yards out while the team as a whole was only able to manage three shots on target throughout the ninety-minute affair.

Sergio Ramos, with a fantastic opportunity to put his team back on terms seconds before the final whistle, fired embarrassingly off target. Neither Pellegrini nor the players made excuses for their defeat in the Andalucian capital, Real knew that this was their biggest test thus far and they did not step up to the challenge.

After six rounds of a thirty-eight match season, there is no need for panic in the Spanish capital; however, there is work to be done. Defensive inconsistencies must be straightened out if Real Madrid wants to be seriously contending for a Spanish title or a European crown. Everything considered, this was Real's first slip-up in any competition. While improvements need to be made it is incredibly early to jump to any conclusions, there is a lot of football to be played before the champions will be crowned.

only thing thats for sure is..., Real isnt going to win anything this year. Maybe next year.

I cannot agree more with this piece. Sevilla obviously deserved the win. They have had a very good run before the match as well. As a staunch Real Madrid fan, I believe the defeat was good for Real and La Liga as a whole. Real needed such a match to differentiate between Marcelo and Drenthe; and compare the role of Arbeloa with Sergio Ramos. Also, Pellegrini got this one wrong. The pace of the midfield was slow. I favoured Granero to start instead of Guti. Madrid will bounce back; but I do not see Madrid winning La Liga. I see Raul lifting the champions league. Hala Madrid!

Real madrid must step up their shoes if she were to win any trophy. A fan I am but for greater perfomance in the Europe we must improve.

sevilla's game plan was executed perfectly and i think with that brand of attacking and counter attacking football they can surely challenge the "big 2". I dont knw what was the problem with kanoute as he didnt start the game . they need him to be fit and firing. credit goes to their wide players Navas and Perrotti whom i think had a more than decent game before being replaced by capel who was also excellent. to real madrid i think the coach failed to read the game . he just had to make sure that the wing backs get extra protection . tell the front players to track back . he didnt do anything about it and as a result marcelo in particular was roasted and sergio ramos had a tough night . this coupled with a seemingly uncertain central defence meant 'saint' had to pull out 2 goals from the net to avoid what could have been an embarassing defeat of the new ' galacticos'..

that was a good performance but in football one will eventually lose so as a fan i wish the team a better luck in their next match

The problems at the back for Real have been present for some time now. Their transfer policy has always been to buy the best attacking talent around the world and outscore their opponents. If they haven't fixed their defensive frailties previously, I don't see why they will be able to fix them now, which is even worse as its during midseason.

I'm not a Real fan or a Barca fan, so this is coming from an unbiased football follower. Real, are terrific going forward on their day, but against sevilla they posed little threat. I think they did miss Ronaldo, who has given them alot of impetus in the final third. Kaka, who started off as their best player in their first couple of games, seems to have gone off the burner, they needed him in this game and he didn't deliver. Their defence excluding pepe is not that great, and they rely too much on casillas. Casilla had a magnificent match, pulling off 2 amazing saves. And, ofcourse, Benzema seems to loose his cool everytime he's presented with a chance. And not just in this game. But still Real madrid are probably the most watchable team in the world at the moment, and will recover.

Real was killed by Navas, Perotti, and Capel. They have to learn how to deal with faster outside mids. Marcelo and Ramos have to be reined in before they play Valencia with Silva or even worse Barca with Messi. Best of luck to Real.

Sevilla is a fantastic team. However, they barely beat Real Madrid on their worst game in La Liga. I will always be a Real Madrid fan, but keeping an open mind, Sevilla did beat them. Knowing Real Madrid, they had a very horrible game, offensively and defensively. They had poor control of the ball and they hardly challenged any 50-50 balls. Let's face it, Real did not bring their top level game to Sunday's match. However, it took Sevilla's top squad and home advantage to defeat Real. I will not bash Sevilla because they are a very top notch team, top 3 in La Liga, but I will add that they scraped that win by the narrowest margin. On the other hand, Barcelona barely beat a team that is in relegation terms. Tables will turn in a couple of weeks and La Liga and my Galaticos will truimph!

Money didn't buy them defense I see. Barca rules the world!
Mes Que un Club!

If Madrid want to lift silverware again without having to rely on Barcelona having locker room trouble again they need to defend like professionals and not school yard kids. Its embarrassing the way they defend. Sure the front line is firing on all cylinders but you cannot present that wayward defense in the CL much less La Liga. Speaking of embarrassing would someone tell honorary squad member Raul his time is up....geez he just doesn't fit in anymore.

Posted by Shawn on 10/07/2009

To be honest, I never reckon Sergio Ramos, Drenthe and Marcelo are good defenders. They are more attacking minded than defensive, what's the point when you have players like Ronaldo and Kaka to win games for you. Real Madrid has spent so much buying good quality attacking players, shouldn't they learn their lesson that selling Makelele in 2004 proved the biggest mistake in life? In comparison with BPL, you'll notice defensively, they are strong. And this year final is going to be English team again.

I think the key is balance. The coach is still ironing out the team plan, and players who have to rely mainly on individual brilliance week in week out will inevitably fall short sooner or later. Abiol and Garay were both solid defenders with their respective clubs, so it's still early to tell. Until Real can get someone like Mascherano (rumours as usual), Lass is essential. Once a game plan is found and stuck to, Real will be flowing. Question is if, and perhaps when.

Posted by Alex on 10/07/2009

Exactly like they say, its too early to make conclusions, but obviously Mr. Isse cannot read and overlooked that part. The defense is going to improve, ronaldo will be back, the whole team will play together and win the treble.

Posted by devilin on 10/07/2009

real madrid has to come up with good tactics to play..marcelo is not even real madrid standard in term on defense..but he still plays...barcelona have a fantastic game play, sadly real madrid doesnt have it..this is all manager fault..he's not good enough to manage this world class team..van der vart is not a player to keep in bench..he shud play..

To me, Seville has been always good when it comes to meeting the two big clubs (Real and Barca). I was just looking forward to seeing good goals from either sides but Seville wining it at the end.

"Better Luck" Madrid you did your best try to let Drenthe play instead of Marcelo and Guti. Raul is a scorer but in certain games he can be a substitute. I hope this loss will be a "Eyeopener" to Pellegrini to work on the defensive and offensive line and to make the right changes or start up for the TEAM so it can return to be SOLID. "Good Luck

It was a fantastic game, madrid were punished by defensive error. Marcello was relaxed and it caused us the first goal. Coach Pellegrini have a lot to do in madrid's defensive line, especially on set piece. HALA MADRID.

Posted by kasonde on 10/07/2009

The problem with real madrid is 1st the president perez, who does not know soccer. Instead of delegating the power to buy or sell players to the coach, he buys them and sells who ever he feels is not a galactico. How can a team like Real sell robben when the only have one natural winger, ronaldo.

2nd there is a player bias at real, when refel vander vart cant play and is better than guti and most attacking midfielders at real, except maybe kaka. also gonzalo higuian who was real's best player last season, does not start the games and yet the let raul play. I am a fan of raul but he should be a super sub. real have two great young strikers benzeema and higuin and they should play together. they are the present and future if raul continues to be a starter i can guarantee you that they will not be able beat teams like barcelona, manchester united, aresenal, liverpool, chelsea, inter millan, juvantus, bayern munich, etc. in the champions league

Posted by dan on 10/07/2009

i think this is just the beginning. Real are going to loose more matches and i really doubt if the can win any trophy this season

Posted by Mike on 10/08/2009

I think the problem with Real is that they are trying to copy Barca in the way of playing an attractive style of soccer because of all those crazy spending.
Also the team moral had been ruined due to the constant coaching replacements and if you are playing the puppet role in the team you cannot motivate them in difficult situations which was a case in the game with Seville

Posted by Presly on 10/09/2009

Real need players like Robinho, robben, Higuain, Lassana Diarra, not Benzema, raul, marcello,

Posted by leslie on 10/09/2009

Give them some time, wait and see- Barca is brilliant in going forward but their game plan, organisaton and discipline is first class. They aren't afraid of flair teams like Real or MU, but they never enjoy playing against more disciplined sides like Liverpool, Chelsea or Inter...

Rome isn't built in a day - Rijkaard spent a few years to tune their defense and Guardiola enjoys the fruits, and Pellegrini has to work on and deliver the same. And, Real always relies on Casillas, but far too much!

Posted by Agege Joseph on 10/12/2009

I love the start game of real madrid, but i don't think they can beat Barca. Barcas Midfielders and forwards are too good to compare to any other club in the world. Raul has to rest and let Benzema take over.

Posted by Teddy on 10/14/2009

Sevilla had a wonderful game no doubt and its good to loose to a team like that putting pressure on not just real but barca too. Thus making it a 3 horse race. Sergio ramos has lost his confidence and needs rehabilitation, guti should never start ahead of granero in any game. I am very certain Real will win the champions league and not La Lliga since most teams play barca with fear except almeria who gave a good fight and lost 1-0 in the end.

Posted by Nsangu on 10/15/2009

As a die hard Madrid fan am first to express disappointment at the loss but i think it played a key role in exposing some of the weaknesses in the team currently. The left back poistion particulary is where I feel the Perez should have done his magic to bring in Clichy (arsenal left back) for example, lets face it Marcelo was taken to the cleaners by Navas and to be honest I doubt if Drenthe would have done any better.

In the mid field Guti had a terrible game, kept losing posession far to easily whilst Raul was quite immobile and invisible for most of the game. However that said Sevile have been a dominat forec in the past few seasons so no one expected an easy match. Hats off to them for playing so well, lets see how the fair in the return game.

As for Barca I think they will soon fall, I think fatigue is beginning to catch up with them, it could be me but i seem to have noticed that they are scoring fewer goals against teams that are quite inferior.

creo que el real madrid no esta pasando un gran momento pero se esta organisando bien, pienso que va a ganar al barca.
