A day after league rivals FC Barcelona embarrassed perennial top club Atletico de Madrid, the spotlight was on Real Madrid to answer if they wished to stay atop the table. Forty seconds after kick-off Real had their response. Ronaldo's double accompanied by a late surge from the home side allowed Real to remain even with Barca and more importantly, continue their unblemished start to the season, on nine points after three matches.
Within seconds of the starting whistle, Cristiano Ronaldo took control of a loose ball and skillfully maneuvered his way through the Xerez defence and brilliantly struck home to put Pellegrini's side in control early. If it were not for the excellent play of Renan in net for Xerez, the match could have gotten out of hand very quickly. The Andalusia side, who are marking their first campaign in the top flight of Spanish football this season, were immensely out played early.
Nevertheless, trailing by only one goal for most of the contest, Xerez were able to threaten the Madrid net a few times. The Brazilian international's keeping surely kept the game within sight for Xerez; however, an onslaught in the last fifteen put the game out of reach and elevated Madrid to victory. But for the seventy-four minutes after Ronaldo put Los Blancos ahead, Real were unable to finish, keeping the supporters at the Bernabeu on edge.
An hour and a quarter after he had put Real in the lead, Ronaldo headed home a corner kick to double the home side's advantage. Guti, who came on for Kaka, would clean up a failed Benzema attempt at goal to put the game out of reach only a few minutes later. Benzema would then redeem himself as some impressive moves beat his defender and the French international fired home, marking his first competitive league goal. A six-minute period that saw Madrid increase their lead from 1-0 to 4-0 sealed three points for Los Blancos.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, who made his first appearance of the season as a substitute for Ronaldo, netted the fifth and final goal of the game. His exclamation point on a win that saw his return to competitive play may have come at a cost. Canal Plus reported that van Nistelrooy may have injured his left quadriceps during the goal and Madrid's doctors were examining him after the game. While losing a veteran presence is never a positive, Real have emphatically shown throughout this young campaign that depth is not an issue.
Sergio Ramos returned to the starting line-up after missing the opening of the season due to injury. His presence helped to bolster a back line that had shown signs of weakness and lack of form up until this point. The Spanish international not only contributed to a nearly flawless defensive effort, but the Spaniard also reaffirmed his menace from set pieces as a brilliant save from Renan was the only thing between Ramos' header and an early two goal advantage for Real Madrid.
Cristiano Ronaldo remained on form as the Portuguese star netted his second double over the past two games. With four goals in the first three league matches and scoring the aforementioned double in Madrid's first Champions League game this past Tuesday, Ronaldo has silenced the critics that were sure to arise if he was not on form early after a large summer transfer from Manchester United. If he continues to play at this level and help bring trophies to the Bernabeu, it will surely have been money well spent.

it's really encouraging for real fans when we didn't play all that spectacularly and still managed to score 5 goals. The team can only improve, but it would take some time... HALA MADRID!!!!!!

HALA MADRID! looking good so far, Kaka is the best addition to the team, and thank goodness CR9 is in form. Raul, the usual solid, I'd like to see Benzema get on a roll. best depth in football, rediculous bench.

Personally, i would think that depth would never have been a problem for this Madrid team. The team had not gotten rid of the excess players after their summer spending spree, hence depth is not an issue. However, as the season goes on, Madrid's defensive frailties may gradually be exposed and that would represent the biggest shortcoming of this team hell bent on conquering Spain and Europe.

Let's be honest.....Real has yet to play a team that will test them. Barca has played 2 of those teams and humiliated one of them that is actually playing in the champs league.
When real run into teams like Atl madrid...valencia...or espanol...and do good..then we will know how real is real!!

Real Madrid is my favorite side of all times and they will continue to be the best thing in football no other side can match their stature. The only problem right now is a solid defense but Madrid can score as much goals on any side as they can get past our defense and Iker Casillas. A missed chance for you is a nail in your own coffin when your up against Madrid. hala Madrid..........#1 Fan from Trinidad & Tobago.

Ronaldo is not just what you think he is.
He is indeed a player that has shown his worth.
If he continues like this, then it's no waste of money.
We, Manchester United fans love and miss him a lot.

inevitably there is always the idiot Barca fan that comes in here chest pounding again!Congratulations, you now have as many CL trophies as Raul does!
As for madrid, 1/2 the starting lineup is new, and it will take time to get the team chemistry and fluidity going, but it's a good start. Offense looks solid, and midfield (with Xabi) is very good. Defense is a bit erratic at the moment, but when Ramos is in full strength and Pepe is back, with Albiol/Arbeloa/Metzelder and Drenthe/Marcelo, they will get better.
It will be an exciting season for sure.

Madrid is only going to get better. By the way Tommy, Real already played Espanyol a couple of weeks ago and beat them 3-0. GIve them time and see what happens!

Real Madrid is coming up gradually, with this same zeal, determination, team work and resolve by the players to make history, results will not be difficult to get this time around.I think sceptics should not underestimate the managerial skills of the president of the club and his magic wands. This team can achieve a lot this time if the plyers finally jell together as a team.

Improve the back line.
The whites will rise.
The sun will shine.
The fans will smile.
Then Bernebeu will dine because everything will be fine with the whites this time.
Bravo guys, you have added colour to my life.

CRISTIANO RONALDO IS THE MOST COMPLETE PLAYER IN FOOTBALL. SCORES THE BEST FREE KICKS IN THE WORLD, CAN MAKE LONG RUNS AND SCORE, AS WELL AS BEING GREAT IN THE AIR SCORING WITH HIS HEAD. MESSI DOES NOT DO THAT.
HE IS STILL ONLY 24. HE MAY WILL END HIS CAREER AS ONE OF THE BEST EVER.

People should stop making comparisons between messi & ronaldo, firstly whoever said messi can't score with his head, well ask man u about that, it happened in a final recently. as for freekicks..maybe he doesnt take them but his contribution to the rest of the game is three times more then any other player, he provides and creates more goals for his other team mates thats why barca scored more goals then any other team in europe last year, runs more angles and is a lot less selfish then ronaldo!!
