Rangers

It is hard to know what to make of this weekend's daw with St Johnstone. The Perth side are having a pretty decent season but even still three points at home should have been secured. We seem to be developing a habit of dropping points after international week. Management acknowledged the issue prior to the match but were clearly unable to resolve the problem.

I appreciate some players have travelled a fair distance during the week but not having European football should be a rarity and if players cannot cope with midweek football and travel then they have no place at Ibrox.

For me though the international week is not the issue. The financial coma Rangers appear to be in allied to complacency and the lost attacking dynamic resulting from Naismith's absence have created a sense of lethargy around Rangers just now. Hopefully the result is the shock to the system the players need and we can focus on racking up the three points on a weekly basis between now and the festive season's Old Firm match. Yesterday's win may have narrowed the gap but for anyone watching it simply confirmed how poor Lennon's Celtic currently look. Make no mistake, were it not for an inexplicable bit of refereeing it was hard to see them picking up three points. If we can win all our games between now and our next meeting rest assured we will have extended our lead for I can see no way they will produce a similar run.

Slightly off topic it was pleasing to see us building on our American and Australian signings this summer by looking towards India. Given the size of the country and their emerging economy status it is a good market to target. You have to believe at least one guy in their national team is good enough to be a squad player. Further evidence hopefully of some creative thinking regarding a transfer policy focused on emerging football nations where value for money still exists.

Of course it remains open to question whether it will be Rangers in their current guise these players turn out for. Rumours continued this week with a City of London based restructuring firm being named as potential administrators and an insolvency event openly being viewed as imminent by Glasgow's business and football communities. I realise most football fans find the issue tedious so will refrain from discussing it at length again. There are a number of blogs out there (the best being rangerstaxcase.com) which cover the issue in detail and are worth a look. It must be said though that even those professing to have "sources" would acknowledge they are in possession of about 25% of the facts at best. There is also a fair degree of wishful thinking in certain quarters. With the result of the tax case not likely to be announced until the New Year speculation, rumours and lies will persist. Clearly Mr Whyte cannot provide any answers on what would result upon the conclusion of the tax case. However, he can fill the vacuum and provide assurances on what will happen between now and the conclusion of the HMRC case.

The uncertainty has to have an impact on the players just as it has an impact on the fans. Professionalism though must surely dictate that the players rise above it. In the absence of a meaningful chase emerging from the other side of the city the greatest danger to our title hopes would appear to come from our own insecurities and doubts.

Unless we find a way to play and threaten without Naismith soon then the lead could be gone by the time we go to Parkhead. It's going to far to say it's a one man team but without him the balance of the side looks all wrong going forward and defensively, we looked laboured and impotent today, always pessimistic? Yes. Putting that aside, genuinely worried? Definitely!
