Rangers SPL Champions Season 2009/2010!
Walter Smiths side may have taken their time to cross over the finish line in recent weeks but the SPL Title was retained by Rangers thanks to a player who has hit some excellent form in the tail end of the season; much maligned since his move to Rangers by the press, ex-players, pundits and fans alike et al but it was the Kyle Lafferty who had the final laugh this season and the big Ulsterman won the title for Rangers with his impressive 17th minute strike in the 1 – 0 away win at Hibs.
The victory at Hibs was followed by a 2 – 1 win away at Tannadice against Dundee Utd which led then led to a temper flared final Old Firm clash of the season which rivals Celtic came out on top 2 – 1. The title was in the bag at this point but try telling the players of either side that this was a ‘nothing’ match; there is no such thing as a meaningless Rangers Vs Celtic clash.
‘A much ado about nothing’…far from it; full of debated refereeing incidents, yet more conspiracy re-runs, trash talk in the press before and after from players and managers a like. Quite frankly I’ve had enough of it all this season although much of it has come from particular half of Glasgow alone so lets just leave it there…or in the words of Walter Smith answering Celtic Andres Hinkel’s comments about how Celtic were a better team this season ‘Show us your medal’s then?
The final league match of the season could have ended better but fair play to Craig Brown’s Motherwell side who dampened the title celebrations who came back to draw level after being two goals down in the 3 – 3 all draw. But it didn’t matter, Captain Davie Weir was presented and held aloft the SPL League Trophy for a second year running!
'Nae Dough 2 In-A-Row!' – the t-shirts dawned by the Rangers first team first debuted at Hibs a few weeks earlier came back out for the title celebrations in front of a delighted home crowd who have the title bragging rights all summer to boast about in the city of Glasgow.
Over the course of the season Rangers have deserved this Title, only two losses’ in the SPL all season, a team that’s not been rebuilt for two and half years or so, picking themselves up after a miserable Champions League campaign, a lack of investment, ‘nae dough’. They’ve bonded and created a unifying and resilient team sprit which as ensured success on a shoestring budget – they should be mighty proud of themselves.
Question is where next, up to half a dozen first team stars out of contract, management yet to be offered new deals, Andrew Ellis deal or no deal? It seems as if its all up in the air…the summer period is going to interesting to say the least…lets see how it unfolds…but the good news is this season’s success will go a long way to helping rebuild the club for next season and beyond…how that takes shape only time will tell…watch it unfold right here…on ESPN Soccernet and Rangers Club Blog.
Meantime enjoy the title victory and you’re summer holidays folks!
