Portsmouth
Posted by Ben Smith on 01/27/2010

The papers spoke of the "relief" that Pompey are feeling as the transfer embargo has been lifted. Really? Relief? Maybe I'm wrong, but a team who arguably need this transfer window more than anybody else in the league would hardly be relieved at a five day transfer period.

Avram Grant said that our most probable options were loans and free agents. In a day and age where the transfer market makes or breaks you, a five day window hardly seems fair, let alone "relieving."

I'm really frustrated by this, so much so that it's difficult to find the words. But, focusing on what's already happened won't fix anything, nor will griping about it endlessly. So moving on from the rubbish and nonsense it’s on to the football.

Am I the only one that has been really impressed by the lads lately? A big win (as far as moral victories go, not so much the scoreline) against a tough Sunderland team in the FA Cup, and a draw with West Ham. Isn't it fantastic, the dynamic of football?
A draw can be elation or crisis, take Liverpool and Portsmouth for example. A draw with Wolves sends the Reds scurrying back to Merseyside, dejected and downhearted. But a draw with West Ham keeps Pompey in the game.

Let me congratulate Danny Webber on his first ever Premier League goal for the club. And what a way to get it eh? Saving a point for your club is a heck of a way to get off the mark.

The draw with the Hammers puts Pompey in last place, but leaves them poised to strike, 6 points takes us out of the drop zone. Play Up Pompey!

One final note, I said I'd focus on the football instead of the garbage. Nonetheless, I will say that I'm a fair keeper and could play fullback if you need me to Avram. Just saying.

I can't believe what has happened to Portsmouth, I tipped them to qualify for the Champion's League this season but look at what has happened! I think the Premier League should bail them out - it's not their fault that the finances have ended up the the way they have. Maybe even a free pass from relegation? That seems fair to me. Manchester United should get relegated for their huge debts.

Grant said that our most probable options for signings were loans and free transfers because those are our ONLY options. The Premier League did not clear Pompey to make any deals that involved a transfer fee, that would put them into further debt.

But you know what, I don't really mind that all that much. Think about it-loans are what this team needs right now. If Pompey end up getting relegated at the end of the season, it is inevitable that some of the guys are going to want out, especially if they feel that they are "premier league talent" as opposed to being "championship talent." Buying players that might end up leaving at the end of the season anyways is pointless. Now lets get some depth through these loans and free transfers.

But I agree, Danny Webber definitely provided a crucial goal and point yesterday. Portsmouth looked pretty flat up until that goal and then seemed poised to take the 3 points after it.

I admire your optimism, but 6 points is still a lot to make up.

I agree, loans aren't all bad, but if we could get some solid talent then maybe we won't have to unload "Premier League Talent"

And 6 points is optimistic, considering who needs those points, but I think we can do it. We're a good team when we want to be. I've got faith in Mr. Grant, he'll do a good job with what he has. Quincy Owusu-Abeyie seems to be all but in a Pompey shirt, and there's rumblings about some russian talent.

@ Justin Smith-
Really? You tabbed Portsmouth to qualify for the champions league this season? I cant tell if that was sarcastic or not, but i hope you didnt have any money on that one. But hey, we're only 26 points away from qualifying!

And how about some sort of mentioning about the huge Portsmouth-Southampton derby match in the FA cup 5th round? Play up Pompey! Thoughts on that match?

as a neutral (but me Mam lives in Portsmouth) I'd think some American based players might fancy a World Cup run in on the south coast... granted that beckham and Donovan have gone, aren't there others, from any nationality, who want to keep their game up?

Dear Justin Smith,

Exactly what planet do you come from? Pompey to the Champion's League? After losing every decent player over the last two years, and their awful form at the end of last season?

Please tell me this is sarcasm and I just didn't get the joke...
