Portsmouth

So, I guess we signed Steve Finnan. As they say, one ridiculously tall striker leaves, an Irish full-back comes in.

I was a little surprised to see this among Alex Ferguson's rant about Man City and Fratton being opened as a training facility for players and managers currently interested in a move to Tottenham.

But I have to admit that this struck me as a step in the right direction. Which really surprised me because the only the positive step Pompey has taken in the last 12 months have been spiffy home and away kits. So you can't blame me for being a bit surprised to see what could be a long awaited turn around, start.

At first I was just glad that we had signed someone but, as I thought about it more, it started to make more and more sense. Steve Finnan is somewhat of a legend on Merseyside and being an accomplished international footballer only helps. Plus, after we sold Glen, we were in desperate need of some quality in the back and I think that Steve Finnan brings it. Now, he could be a total mess and turn out to be a terrible signing but I can't shake the feeling that we'll be glad to have signed Finnan.

What are the Pro's and Con's to Finnan (seriously)?

totally agree with you, now we just need a few more signings and will be good to go.

I think it's a good signing, despite the fact that our two starting fullbacks are a combined age of 68 years old. It's only a one year deal, and he'll be a good mentor to Martin Cranie, who should be able to take over the starting position the following season.
At this point, with only two free transfers added and five players on trial at Pompey, any player added to the roster will help. At least we're getting closer to being able to field a full bench on the 15th.
Now if Paul Hart can just avoid Harry's mistake of signing a great goal-scorer at the Championship level thinking that it will translate into goals in top-flight, it will be appreciated. And I hope the deal for the Croatian forward goes through, as well.

To Chris
As a Liverpool fan Finnan was one of my favorite players. He's as consistant a fullback as you'll ever see. Very solid defensively and rarely puts a foot wrong. He's also got a brilliant cross on him but the problem is he doesnt get forward very often. He's also never had much pace, even a few years ago.

He'll definitely help save a few clean sheets but dont expect much marauding and overlapping from him like Johnson

I'm a Liverpool supporter myself, but I was pleased to see Stevie Finnan making a return to the EPL. He is a bit on in years, and I was only able to see him play one match for Espanyol, but he was still a more than solid full back when we sold him and I for one was sad to see him go. The biggest fear has to be the fact that he was injured for almost his entire spell with Espanyol and the fact that he apparently failed a medical for Hull last season, but if he can stay healthy he will be a rock at the back for you. And Cranie could do much much worse when it comes to a mentor at right back, which will be good for Pompey and good for England.

As a liverpool fan till i die, finnan is the best thing to happen to pompey. They are sure to enjoy him as we did.

I am also a Liverpool fan, and can say that although Finnan isn't on par with Johnson, Right back is a position pompey won't have to worry about next season. He is solid and can provide many things that right backs at clubs in a similar position to pompey won't. I wish him all the best as I feel like Espanyol wasn't his first choice when leaving Liverpool.

What do you guys think about the possible signing of Nikola Kalinic? I've heard a lot about him and pompey lately, so I was wondering if you guys knew anything about him? Apparently Pompey and Rovers are in a bidding war for him right now and Blackburn are ready to bid big for him if need be.. Anyone know anything about Kalinic?

Posted by Ben Smith on 08/01/2009

Hey Romano, thanks for the comment, here's what I know:

Nikola Kalinic is a Croatian striker who is currently playing for one of the more popular teams in Croatia, HNK Hajduk Split. He's scored 32 goals for them in 59 appearances. He also has 16 goals in 20 games 11 in 12 for the Croatian U-17 and U-19 sides respectively. He featured for Croatia in a friendly against Moldova and a Euro 2008 match against Poland, he didn't score in either game. He's been called "The Future of Croatian Football."

I haven't heard anything about Rovers or Blackburn, but I did hear that Pompey wants to pay Hajduk Split around £6 million over three years, but Hajduk Split wants all of it up front. So, for now I guess it's a "no-go" but if we could work something out I think he'd be a good signing.

I imagine that the signnig and renewall of somo "experienced" players (Finnan, Kanu, Viduka) is a long term plan. Brinning mentors for the younger boys.
I´m sure Hart can field a team that will grow together as the seasson advances.
But i don´t think he´ll make any "big" signning (no Kalinic), I think he is just building a team that can stay up and grow up.

How much did he cost? Finnan's a great pickup for a squad that seems to only be selling. But, with the expectation of big, foreign ownership spending cash, will he even have a spot in the Starting XI soon?

I understand that Paul Hart is looking for some replacement strikers. What about Julio Santa Cruz. He was looking for a transfer from Blackburn Rovers last season. You couldn't get a sharper natural goalscorer!!

What a waste of cash. Already injured! I just hope our new boy, Freddy will live up to the hype!
