Glen Johnson will be moving to Liverpool for about £18.5 million. Or at least that's what they say. On top of that you can add Peter Crouch feeling uncertain about his future. Then put 15 players out of contract on top of that and Pompey is in some kind of mess. Or at least that's what it looks like.
But first impressions can be deceiving. Portsmouth doesn't have to look any further than itself to learn this lesson. On the surface, at the beginning of this last campaign, Portsmouth were in Europe and coming off an FA Cup win they looked to be a contender in all of their competitions. Fast forward a couple of months and they have a new coach, have lost key players and find themselves in dire financial straits.
But just like the fantastic changed swiftly to the terrible so can the situation in which Portsmouth now finds themselves change from bad to good. For example, a Russian £44 million in debt could change to an Arab owner most definitely not in debt. And that simple action could change a lot of things for Pompey. It would give the club the stability that Peter Crouch is looking for. It could bring in players that will fill the holes left by those that have already left and those that will leave.
However, nothing is official yet and until I see Glen wearing red and shaking Rafa's hand I'll be appealing to several religious deities to keep him at Fratton. Hopefully the sale will go through and Pompey will be in a better position than they are today.
Also rumours have been going around that Paul Hart will soon be leaving us, and I can't decide how I feel about that. What do you lads think?
But, if Paul does leave us and If Portsmouth are interested I have a very impressive managerial record with Portsmouth FC and I have a FM09 saved game file to prove it. So feel free to contact me about that if you wish.
Until next time,
Ben Smith (Portsmouth manager 2010 - ? )
