Portsmouth
Posted by Ben Smith on 04/17/2009

Coming off of back to back draws against relegation rivals. Portsmouth faces two tough opponents over the next fortnight. Want to know the worst part? They aren't just tough on paper.

On the 18th when Portsmouth and Bolton square off at "The Reebok" there will be a lot riding on the match. In an earlier post I tipped Portsmouth to ease through Hull and West Brom and come out on this side with six more points and loads of confidence heading into "The Gauntlet." Apparently no one told any of lads I said this, I'm not sure who I'll lay the blame on just yet but when I decide I'll write it on the wall of the Portsmouth FC Facebook group.

Glen Johnson should be back in the starting line up against Bolton, but I'm not sure it'll do. You see Bolton is hot off an almost comeback attempt and they'll be going for the kill on Saturday, it'll be up to the back four to hold tight if we want to escape with any points.

Speaking of comebacks I was just perusing through Portsmouth's ESPN page and I noticed something. Pompey has conceded 17 goals in the closing stages of the game. 17! They also need to shake this off by Saturday.

I'll now draw your attention to something I said earlier, "The Gauntlet." I am of course talking about a difficult schedule rather than an actual gauntlet. Bolton, ManU, and Newcaslte are the next three opponents lined up for Portsmouth and these will be crucial. Unfortunately Bolton is low enough in the table that we're an important match for them, and United will surely not let anything slip as they try to defend their title this is unfortunate because if we want to stay alive drawing even isn't an option anymore. Not after we used 'em up against Hull and WBA.

As tough as these two fixtures will be, Newcastle looms on the horizon and the excitement of that match is almost too much to bear. I truly believe that the outcome of that match could decide whether or not Newcastle (or ourselves for that matter) will stay in the Premiership.

I'll check back in with you on Monday. Here's to hoping the Gods will accidentally give Pompey the luck meant for that other blue team.
