Paper Round
Posted by Jon Carter on 07/19/2009

It's Sunday and therefore the News of the World rumour mill is in full swing. Let's start with the news that Ashley Young could be on his way out of Aston Villa, with Tottenham and Liverpool both set to bid around £20m.

The winger has been one of the best in the Premier League over the past few seasons, so he'll certainly cost a few quid, but Martin O'Neill is surely not going to let him go now that Stewart Downing has arrived. Whatever happened to Liverpool's move for David Silva?

Tottenham, meanwhile, might sneak in as they have been quiet so far this summer. They need a left winger, but are being distracted by chasing yet another striker. The News of the World claims that they have bid £12m for Peter Crouch; while the Mail on Sunday says that they'll find out on Monday if Klaas-Jan Huntelaar will be moving to them instead of Stuttgart.

Spurs might also reignite their interest in signing David Beckham before the 2010 World Cup, says the same paper. Chelsea are also reported to be keen to offer Becks an escape route from the United States and keep him on track for next year's showpiece - and they might win the race.

In a case of pot and kettle, Chelsea are getting rather angry with Manchester City over their 'tapping up' of John Terry, says the News of the World. The Blues are furious that Mark Hughes openly spoke about his pursuit of the England skipper - even spelling out why Terry should sign on at Eastlands - although we have yet to hear anything from the man himself which might clear everything up.

Instead, City will spend the £30m they were going to land JT with, on Joleon Lescott. City had a £15m turned down by Everton and are now reportedly ready to go into 'crazy-money' mode in order to get themselves a new centre-back before the start of the season. Everton would have to be tempted by that, wouldn't they?

The Sunday Times have a nice report on the fact that City's 'crazy' spending has landed them rather a large wage bill. So large in fact, that when you combine it with the transfer fees they've paid already it could set a new record at over $1bn by the time they're done.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are looking to fill the void left by Emmanuel Adebayor. The News of the World says they'll splash £10m on Bordeaux's striker Marouane Chamakh, who is keen to join up with Arsene Wenger.

And finally, Carlos Tevez may have wanted to get rid of all things Manchester United, but he has bought Cristiano Ronaldo's old house for £4m and will be neighbours with old teammate Rio Ferdinand. I'd give it a good clean if I were you Carlos.
