Paper Round
Posted by Dom Raynor on 05/20/2009

Not content with provoking Sir Alex Ferguson during the season and then failing to offer his congratulations to the Manchester United manager upon winning the Premier League title, Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is set to further annoy his nemesis with an astonishing £50million swoop for Carlos Tevez.

Benitez's attempt to lure Gabriel Heinze to Anfield from Old Trafford ended with the lawyers being brought in to block the move but with on loan Tevez owned by Kia Joorabchian and not United, Ferguson will have little say in the transfer - unless he decides to sign up the Argentina striker himself.

According to The Sun Tottenham Hotspur were lining up a £18m move for the 25-year-old but were blown out of the bidding when the Tevez camp revealed Liverpool were ready to offer the £26m asking fee and a staggering £160,000-a-week three-year deal - worth £8.3m-a-year.

A source close to the deal told SunSport: "It seems amazing that Liverpool have the money to do this when you consider their owners are looking for funds."

Instead of chasing Tevez Spurs boss Harry Redknapp will lower his sights a little and concentrate on securing the signing of Sunderland forward Kenwyne Jones, according to The Guardian.

Jones, who scored his 11th goal of the season at Portsmouth on Monday, was a target in the mid-winter window but signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with the Black Cats at the end of January. Spurs' prospects of signing the Trinidad & Tobago forward may depend upon whether the Wearsiders are able to retain their Premier League status this weekend.

The Independent report that 'Arry is also interested in an audacious bid for Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry as he looks to add the experience and leadership he believes Spurs have lacked this season.

Spurs hope that Liverpool's uncertain finances mean that they will be able to tempt Barry away from Aston Villa where he has one year left on his contract.

Meanwhile, Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari, whom Redknapp signed for £7m at Pompey then sold to Inter for £14m last year, will reject a summer move to Tottenham.

The 24-year-old helped the Italians retain the Serie A title this season and told the Daily Mail: "I'm not moving from Inter - I would be crazy to - I'm very, very happy here. I'm in a winning team, at a great club and I want to keep winning at Inter."

The annual 'Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid' transfer saga is in danger of being trumped this summer by the 'Arsene Wenger to Madrid' story that is slowly turning into an epic tale.

In Wednesday's chapter the Daily Star claim that Los Blancos are still hopeful of landing the Frenchman and have given Wenger until Thursday to decide.

Wenger held a summit meeting for over two hours with Gunners chief executive Ivan Gazidis and It now appears the 59-year-old is seriously considering ending his 12-year love affair with the north Londoners.

According to the Daily Mirror Wenger, who is being offered a measly £13m to strengthen his Arsenal squad in the summer, is tempted by the £100million-plus war-chest dangled in front of him by Real Madrid.

The Daily Express claim that Barcelona are preparing a £20million bid to take Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole to Camp Nou. The Champions League finalists, have already sounded out the Blues about England full-back and are ready to come back with a firm bid when the season ends.

And finally... Chelsea target Carlo Ancelotti plans to join AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini on the pitch after their final home game against Roma as he says goodbye to the Italian club before heading to the Premier League, according to The Times.

Carlos Tevez wants to leave Man U to get more game time....hmmm...then he wouldnt join Tottenham unless he thought he'd get a start over club captain Robbie Keane.

And he wouldnt want to join Liverpool unless he thought he'd get a start over club captain/talisman/maestro Steven Gerrard!

What rubbish! Benitez needs a striker not a man in the hole...so go buy Silva from Valencia, or Eto'o, Drogba, Adebayor...Adriano? Even Adriano makes more sense!!

Benitez will buy Tevez from Man U for £26m in Aug and sell him back to Man U for £13m in Jan.

You guys do realize that the Carlos Tevez rumour originated from the Sun, which is a rag that I wouldn't even use as toilet paper, citing no quotes or naming any sources?

As whole point of the blog is to provide a round up of what is in the newspapers and clearly states - "According to The Sun" and "told SunSport" - I'm assuming they do know the rumour orignated from that paper.

on the tevez story. most of the top clubs in the world wont have space for tevez to be a starter. real madrid has raul hunterlaar. barca has the amazing triangle. liverpool has torres n gerrard. chelsea has drogba and anelka. inter has ibrahimovic. milan has pato and kaka. tevez's biggest hope of 1st team guarantee football is with a club which can afford to pay his wages and give him regular football and the hope of becoming a great club, alibeit faint in the short term, is MANCHESTER CITY!
now, on to the wenger to madrid story. if real madrid can offer him 100m, i'm sure man city's owners wont hesitate to triple wenger's salary, and offer him 300m transfer kitty. there's also a greater chance that he'd have total control a la at arsneal than at Real Madrid.
main reason y city cant get world class players is cos they dont have a world classs manager to attract the players! wenger would revolutionize the club.
problem is, he aint going nowhere! Arsene in Arsenal. perfect!

In my view, I think Robben and Silva in Liverpool will be great. the premier league is ours next season.

Posted by Benzamins on 05/23/2009

why Tevez?....

Posted by TomPool on 05/23/2009

seriously, why Tevez for God's sake? what about Silva? Has Benitez forgotten about him so soon?
Benitez should forget about Ferguson now and get on with his plans for Silva and those that will keep Liverpool alive for next season!
We don't want just any bench-warmer at Anfield!

Posted by asher on 05/23/2009

yeah stone, the premier league is ours. Liverpool would get it!

LIverpool's core is already very strong! but our flanks have much to be desired... i mean... COME ON! we already have sooo many strikers that we have to use them on the FLANKS!? kyut and babble... Liverpool need world class wingers like what some of u mentioned! ROBBEN and Silva! yea!

with all due respect to tevez, which i think is a real hard working player that i really admire coz of his passion and work rate, but he just aint what liverpool or (like one of u said.) other top clubs need.

as for wenger... sigh, i really wish arsenal all the best if he were to leave them. seriously, if he leaves, they are sooo screwed!

if tevez goes to liverpool i hope it will be as a second striker role and a supporting one not a main striker role

Posted by anyama on 05/25/2009

the big spaniard must be mad if he lets alonso go,it will equality be silly to splash that dime on tevez only to sell the argentine for 7m pounds.what a move that would be for johnson, antonio valencia and droooogba! go benitez go
