It's back! The Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid story returned to the back pages of Saturday's UK newspapers with both The Guardian and Daily Mail reporting that the Spanish club will seal a £75m deal for the Manchester United forward in the summer.
Ronaldo remains determined to move to the Bernabéu and it is understood his salary and contractual terms have already been concluded as part of the world-record transfer.
According to The Guardian Ronaldo's representatives have held extensive talks with Madrid and, according to "informed sources", told the Spanish club last September that he had no intention of remaining at Old Trafford beyond the end of the current season.
But the Daily Mail reveal that United deny that there is an agreement and are sticking to their very public stance that Ronaldo is not for sale.
However, it is also the case that a select group of European super agents are now convinced that United's resistance to the deal will finally be broken in the coming weeks and that the biggest transfer in English football history will finally take place at the end of the season.
The Telegraph report that United's resolve has not weakend and sources at Old Trafford insist there is no substance to the claims. The Portuguese winger, under contract until 2012, will not be leaving Manchester in the near future.
Meanwhile, Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink has poured cold water on Geordie hero Alan Shearer's return to Newcastle United and told the striker: Your fame means nothing. At least that is how The Sun interpret the Dutchman's comments.
"Top, top players think because of their talent everything is going to happen automatically," the Blues manager warned. "It's not always that when you are a top, top player you are guaranteed to be a top manager as well."
The Daily Star also report that 61-year-old Hiddink delivered a slap down to Tyneside's young up start. Even though many Newcastle fans believe Premier League survival is a formality now their 'Messiah' is back in Toon, Hiddink reckons the managerial rookie faces a steep learning curve.
"It depends on your religion and whether you believe in messiahs," joked the Chelsea boss.
Newcastle striker Michael Owen disagrees with Hiddink and told The Times Shearer's arrival will herald a "new chapter" for the struggling club.
"[It] is just what we needed to give us that extra injection of confidence and enthusiasm and everyone has certainly had an extra spring in their step since the announcement was made in midweek," said Owen.
Sir Alex Ferguson has accused some of his Manchester United stars of being lulled into complacency in the Premier League title race, according to the Daily Express.
He reckons his younger players started to believe all the hyperbole about the possibility of a quintuple of trophies and claims the shock defeat at Fulham two weeks ago, which followed a stunning collapse against Liverpool, has actually done United a favour.
He said: "What it has done is get rid of all that nonsense in the media about us being untouchable, unbeatable and how magnificent we were."

just let him go, he is not indispensable anyway, nobody is bigger than the club but he thinks he is furthermore the sum of money could easily get united two more world class player.

Just let him go ........ take the money. To put this into perspective, the revenue is close to the match day gate taken from 20 Man U games - ie a whole year's earnings from ticket sales.
No player is worth this much. Imagine the young talent that can be developed for this. Man U won plenty of titles before Ronaldo came along, take the cash and run I say

I think a player like Ronaldo should go. Its obvious that he has no loyalty towards the club and his performances have been that of a one trick pony. While there is no doubt about his talent, it is hard to see him maintaining or even improving the skills he already has. In my (probably biased opinion), his abilities have more or less peaked and any notable improvements will be limited in scale.
It is best for the club and for Sir Alex to get the transfer fees, and possibly bargain for 85 million pounds to do a major overhaul of United's squad. As good it may seem at the moment, I feel that we still do have a long way to go in terms of midfield. We lack commanding presence in midfield and the Carrick- Giggs/Fletcher/Anderson fails to strike fear into the hearts of opponents because of their lightweight nature. It is also important to prepare for the future as despite the recent injection of youth, the team is getting older and players like Huntelaar and Ribery would help.

I think Hiddink should think about the champions league match against Liverpool, than disturbing his head about today's match with the 'Toons', because I know my boys(Chelsea Players) would defeat Newcastle. Blues 4 life.

Failure to beat Aston Villa on Sunday will automatically mean the trophy is going Anfield. But i know Ferguson is a very experienced manager but with the likes of Rooney, Scholes,Vidic, and Babertov all missing out it will be very hard for man utd to overcome Martin O'Neill's men.

So where's the outrage??? When City were trying to buy Kaka they were labelled as "ruining football". Why isn't Real Madrid getting blasted by the media? This is just proof that is isn't City who has inflated the transfer market, its the clubs like Madrid, Chelsea, United, Inter, Liverpool......ect. Time to get off City's back. They just want to get their share of the football glory now.

Sir Alex Ferguson, has done a great job no doubt. But talk of possibility of wining a quintuple of trophies, he must really wake up from his sleep to find out he is a dreamer who needs to wake up from his sleep.
Manchester united do not have the balls to go all that far.the pressure of the Premier League and that of the champions league will be too much for his boys....still i wish Manchester united all the best.

RONALDO HAS ALL THROUGH THIS SEASON NOT SHOWN A FULL COMMITMENT TO THE COURSE OF MANCHEATER UNITED. HE IS A SKILLED FOOTBALLER FOR SURE, BUT ONE CAN ONLY PERFORM WELL WHEN HE IS HAPPY. HIS BODY LANGUAGE SHOWS THAT HE WANTS TO LEAVE MU. IT WILL BE REASONABLE FOR MU TO LET GO OF HIM AT THIS POINT. HE HAS PLAYED HIS PART IN OLD TRAFFORD AND WILL CERTAINLY NOT FIND THAT FAVOUR IN MADRID.MU WILL USE THE PROCEEDS OF THE SALE TO BUY YOUNGER SKILLED PLAYERS. GOOD LUCK TO HIM.

the glazers will never sell ronaldo, unlike their counterparts in the e.p.l. their main objective is to win and the money comes second.i find it mind boggling that fans dont understand these american owners. c.r. is the poster boy for the e.p.l. and letting him go to spain is not good for the league, $75 million is a pittance to these people.the glasers do not want to be remenberd as the owner who sold the babe ruth of football.

Why would Ronaldo want to go to Real Madrid? He's in the best club which had won UEFA Champs League and Fifa Club World Cup.It's because of Man Utd that brought Ronaldo to be famous and become the world player of the year.By the way,if Ronaldo goes to Real Madrid, would he secure a place in first eleven?Real Madrid have got some good wingers but aren't using them properly. The players which Real Madrid bought from Man Utd like Heinze, has drop his form since joining The Catalans.Real Madrid just lost to Liverpool 5-0.They have drop their form.Real Madrid are eliminated in the 4th-round,a club like them should be place in the finals. If Ronaldo join Real Madrid,I think he's going to lose his form,as He plays at Old Trafford for about 6 years. He has been in his best form since he won the UEFA Champs League. So why should he go to Real Madrid which is not in a good form soo far and leave Man Utd which is the best club in the world?I think he should not go to Real Madrid!Man Utd will support him

Well if he wants to leave sell him! Make some money of him and get a couple of top tier players with the money from the deal. Ronaldo is to inconsistent anyway. Wow he had one season with 40 goals....hasnt really done that this year has he?
 |
Posted by pvo on 04/04/2009
Let him go. 75 mil could buy a lot. Last time I checked Ronaldo had nothing to do with the 13 consecutive clean sheets.
 |
Posted by Fabio Capello on 04/04/2009
If CR wants to leave, let him. ManU can do alot with 75m. Invest in Ribery. Invest in other weak areas of the squad. Instead of putting all your mind on securing one player. Why not let this player go and improve the team instead?

At the end of the day, who are creating all this rumour to unsettle the winger? It's real madrid. And if he really leave man utd for real madrid, i doubt he will win another medal in his whole career. Gd luck beckham-wannabe! See what kind of state beckham is now, pathetic

let him go and seal new long term deal for Tevez and bring in Ribery as a winger repalcement. then there is the Ronaldo-Saga finished as He never will get better theses days. If he joins Madrid its a big step down from him, expect the salery, if this will be garanted as spanish clubs look to be bankrot. Corazon, Switzerland

I say if Ronaldo wants to go, let him go. He is at the best club in the world at the moment and we will just replace him with 3-4 world class players for the cash we get for him. Real Madrid will ruin him, they've shown that in Beckham, van Nistelrooy, Heinze and they've all never been as good as they were.
 |
Posted by Vint on 04/04/2009
Sell Ronaldo, get the money and buy couple of top-class player. We want hardworking, loyalty, and of course talented player. Definitely not for Ronaldo. He is selfish on the field.
 |

regardless of consistency, united lacked lots of pace during his absence at the start of the season. The list of pros and cons of him leaving will be too long. I hope that whatever happens, united will come up on top. If c.r goes to Real and decides to ruin his footie career, he could always try male modeling or smth.

This message is for Sir Alex:
Is Ronaldo worth your trouble? You had pain-stakingly brought him up and even groom his talents to become a world-class player.
Loyalty is what Ronaldo is lacking. Though he is a good player, but his loyalty is sucks that number '7' shirt had made him walked the same route his his predecessor, David Beckham.
Does Ronaldo thinks that he can get a regular top 11 position plays all the time? Think carefully as many players in Real had been left out though they are also world-class players!
So my messgae and advice to Sir Alex. Why don't you let him go? You can get better youth players in another club or even groom your current player, Park Ji-Sung to become even better than Ronaldo. At least Park had shown lots of courage to fight for the ball, instead of waiting all the time like Ronaldo. And also Park is still loyal to Man Utd!

Ronaldo have very great talents and skillful player,no doubt about that..but if he join Madrid,I think that is not good decision.I would prefer to see him play for Barca if he desprate to move away..but MU is still need him in their squad.

i say sell him. . . . . the united fans are largely unanimous. . . our heroes are those who have manchester united in their blood. . who love united. . . and who give everything on the pitch for united. . .the rooneys, giggs', neville's and tevez's of this world. . . . if ronaldo's heart is set on leaving and he is thinking only of himself as world player of the year. . .fine. . sell him. we don't need the portuguese princess anyway.

It's a right decision to sell Ronaldo in such a high price even though Man Utd is one of the richest clubs in the world. He's not consistent in his performance anymore. Look at his ways of playing! Suck!I don't think he will do well in madrid. Take the money to buy some quality players to replace Scholes or to strengthen the midfield. Forget about Anderson or Fletcher...
 |

If Ronaldo wants to go then let him go. His display of disloyalty last year was disgusting. I wish he would have gone then.
There is no room at Manchester United for a self absorbed cry baby like player like Ronaldo. I am very surprised that Sir Alex puts up with his antics.
Besides, his performance pales in comparison to last years.
Manchester United is and always will be bigger than one player.

just sell him. 75m is quite a big sum. i'd like to see man u with ribery in that position.

furthermore... if they pay to keep him and risk losing a player like Rooney who is only getting better... it's not worth it at all. Frankly, it is all marketing and Christiano hasn't played nearly as hard, errr well, this year as he did last. There are so many other special talents out there and my God, for 75 million, Man U could buy the entire MLS and just take whoever they want from there...

If Ron leaves Man U,i think its easy to find the replacement.Who knew the replacement of Beckham at Old Trafford when he left for Madrid?
Who knew Ron could be a big players in the world?
i think comes what may if Ron leaves Man U,nothing can change the status of the club.

I dont see what all the fuss is about.Real Madrid sits on a pedestal few other clubs in the world do.It`s obvious to see why every if not most players in the world would love to join the club when they peak. It`s been traditionally the peak of most world best players`careers to join Madrid. They are after all the footballing super power! At least they still are.So why would Ronaldo not want to leave Man Utd for Real...why did the former world players of the year do the same...simple Real Madrid =Power!

Yea i guess i can see where your coming from MANUNTDYANK, so what if he's just a WINGER who scored 42 goals in 47 appearences, was pretty much carrying the team for the 2007/2008 season, and seasons prior scoring most of their goals.
I guess none of that really doesn't mean anything. Also considering that fact that he's done a hell of a lot more than Rooney has done(this season or last),and what about that nice sum of money they spent for Berbatov, WHAT A GREAT INVESTMENT!! You can't expect a player to spend their whole career on one team, can you really blame him if he wants to expand his horizons and play in other competitive leagues? Yeah sure Man Utd. may have given Ronaldo the start to become as famous as he is today, but it was Ronaldo that has pretty much been the driving force behind Utd.'s dynamite seasons in the last several years.
If you feel that a player like ribery can fill Ronaldo's shoes and score an Avg. of 20+ goals a season then what the hell give a shot
 |
Posted by Matt on 04/05/2009
There is no one that can replace Ronaldo, and he is easily the best attacking player in the world. I am a ManU fan, and of coarse they will be able to compete at the highest levels without him, but they will never be equal to what they are with him. So many young players coming up at ManU that will make a bright future, but the excitement may not ever be quite the same without the greatest player. If he does go to Real, I hope they find the best way to utilize him. He desserves the best opportunity

No player is bigger than his club. If Ronaldo wants to leave, no problem. Utd should capitalise on Real's desperation and get a player (My wish is Sergio Ramos)in addition to the 75m. With Ronaldo out, Nani will have more games to improve.

CR is a very important player for Man U, if it weren't for him then they wouldnt have won so many titles as they did.
So u all shut up!! No one can discredit CR for his contribution to MU, its just his time to leave the club and he would be going to the most successful club in Europe.
What he should do is if he leaves for RMAD is just to play superbly as he did in his early years at MAN U and further shut y'all up. Arsenal, Real Madrid to d world!!

The thing is Ron is disgruntled in man u, this has shown in the way he plays for the club. He doesn't chase after possession like past seasons and he gives away the ball just too easily. What would man utd do with such player? Sell him and get the best out of the deal. Let him go and make some more money for his family, he's got all the personal accolades in soccer with some major trophies. Let him go and get the money, man u has milked the best out of him (i believe). Frank Ribery is not a bad idea. Energy is what man u needs in the midfield and Ribery has a lot to dissipate.
