Paper Round

The weekend's newspapers may have been packed full of speculation that Manchester United were ready to launch a £70 to £100m bid for Kaka but Monday's press proclaimed the Old Trafford outfit back on the trail of Karim Benzema.

Sir Alex Ferguson has been pursuing the hitman for a year but was priced out of a £40m swoop last summer when he turned instead to Dimitar Berbatov, according the Daily Mirror.

But United are plotting a second attempt for Benzema with Ligue 1 giants Lyon at risk of missing out on a Champions League slot. Ferguson's top spies were at Lyon's 0-0 draw with Paris Saint Germain at the weekend.

If Lyon drop their asking price considerably United would snap up Benzema in an instant - which would mean the end of Carlos Tevez's chances of being signed permanently.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mail claim that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has rejected an ambitious bid from Bayern Munich to recruit him as their new manager.

The German club are apparently so desperate for the Frenchman to replace outgoing manager Jurgen Klinsmann that Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge invited him to name his own terms and pledged to give him enough transfer funds to compete for the world's top names.

Wenger rejected the approach and underlined his quest to take Arsenal back to the top after just one trophy in four years.

The Sun reveal that Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink regularly plays out matches in his head to test out players and tactics and that he has never lost such a mental match. He has gone over his side's Champions League semi-final with Barcelona twice in his mind already.

The upshot of all of Hiddink's cerebral analysis is that the Dutchman will take a massive gamble by using a less than fully fit Jose Bosingwa to crush the menace of Lionel Messi in Barcelona on Tuesday night, according to the Daily Express.

The Portugal right-back was hauled off after 67 minutes of the 1-0 win at West Ham United on Saturday with a thigh muscle knock after trying out in the unfamiliar role at left-back.

The Chelsea-related news continued in the Daily Star, which claimed that John Terry condemned the Hammers fans for the disgraceful taunts aimed at him and team-mate Frank Lampard during the victory at Upton Park.

"In the end, though, personally I think the Hammers fans crossed the line ... but when they got a bit back from me they all got the a***."

Crisis club Southampton, whose relegation from the Championship was confirmed at the weekend, will go out of business in eight days unless they find a buyer to save the club, according to The Guardian.

The club's holding company went into administration last month and the players are understood to have been paid last week thanks only to £130,000 raised by fans under a Save Our Saints appeal.
