Paper Round

It seems that no matter how much money Manchester City are willing to throw at players they just can't seem to get their man.

The latest big name star to reject an approach from the Citizens is Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o, who turned down a £35m move, according to the Daily Mirror.

The 28-year-old Cameroon striker is also a target for Inter Milan but has told Barcelona he wants to stay at the Nou Camp and negotiate a new contract. He has just 14 months left on his current deal.

One the tabloid's famous unnamed sources, apparently a 'pal' of the 26 goal striker, said: "Samuel is happy at Barcelona and, despite the interest from England, he wants to stay."

Meanwhile, over at Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp is set to continue the club’s recent tradition of signing players in positions they really don’t need to strengthen.

Despite having Heurelho Gomes and Carlo Cudicini battling it out for the No.1 spot, and Ben Alnwick as back up, The Sun report the club are still eager to sign Lokomotiv Moscow goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic.

Over at Newcastle United interim boss Alan Shearer is refusing to bow to mounting pressure to axe shot-shy Michael Owen, according to the Daily Star.

Shearer's former strike partner has not scored in five games since his return from injury and the club's £16m record signing last scored back in January.

Obafemi Martins is waiting in the wings and the Nigerian striker has postponed groin surgery until the summer so he can help the Magpies in their battle against the drop.

The Guardian report that the former Internazionale striker flew to Milan last week where a specialist confirmed he needed an operation but, after discussions with Shearer, Martins agreed to battle on for now.

Arsenal's four-goal hero Andrei Arshavin has told The Independent that he will not tail off like Julio Baptista after his amazing goal haul against Liverpool.

The Roma player scored four goals for Arsenal in a Carling Cup tie at Anfield in January 2007 but Arshavin said that he hoped to be at the club longer than the famously homesick Brazilian.

"I was told that Julio Baptista did it here in the Carling Cup but after that he finished playing for Arsenal," Arshavin said. "I want to keep playing after this."

The Daily Express claim that Aston Villa defender Martin Laursen will to announce his retirement by the end of the week. The Dane has been warned that attempting to play on through his persistent knee problems could cause him problems in later life.

Liverpool's American owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr, have pledged to work together to raise the funds they need to refinance the club's loans and retain control of the Reds, according to The Times.
