Paper Round
Posted by Jon Carter on 03/14/2009

The Carlos Tevez affair finally looks like it's reaching a conclusion as there is much paper-talk over how big a fee West Ham are willing to pay in compensation.

It will be ended, claims the Independent, by a £10m deal - but wait - there's more.

The Daily Mirror can go one (ok five) better and put the figure at £15m, with Sheffield United already rubbing their hands at the prospect. But who's that on the horizon?

It's the Times and they have the biggest of the lot, with the Hammers willing to pay a mighty £25m for their part in sending the Blades down. Quite frankly, it's hard to know who to believe, but everyone (including the Sheffield club themselves) will just be pleased when the cheque is actually signed.

The Tevez affair has raised it's ugly (sorry Carlos) head again, but it's the United v Liverpool clash that should be dominating all the tabloid talk. Rafa this, Fergie that, and various papers have picked Rafa's rant as their main topic of conversation. His attack on Fergie has had no bearing on the title race, so he claims, despite them dropping points like it's going out of fashion ever since.

Leave it to The Daily Mirror to bring up old Cristiano again. A big game always carries some big quotes beforehand, but it's all rather dull this time as he's said, once again, that he's quite happy to stay at Old Trafford.

United will be slightly less pleased that Karim Benzema has also said he's staying, with his club Lyon. The French striker had been linked with a big money move but, somewhat surprisingly given Lyon's destruction by Barcelona, has decided he wants to stay. ''Time is on my side,'' he said in the Sun - who would also like to mention at this point that they think the Tevez affair will cost £15m and don't you believe any other rubbish.

Speaking of rubbish, various papers have decided to bring up that John Terry to Man City nonsense again. £25m? Are you kidding? Although there's some funny quotes from Guus Hiddink who has branded City ''immoral'' in the Sun and at that price he may have a point.

Transfer talk continues apace in the current bun, as Mark Hughes apparently wants Gareth Barry as his top transfer target and a rather convoluted mish-mash of £6m, plus striker Daniel Sturridge and midfielder Michael Johnson, might be enough to seal the deal. If I was Martin O'Neill I'd be tempted.

Harry Redknapp, meanwhile, has claimed in the Daily Telegraph that Villa are the club to emulate. Buy young, buy British and above all make sure you don't go wasting £15m on the likes of David Bentley and Darren Bent. Of course, with Villa in the top four it's hardly grounding breaking stuff and some papers are far more interested in the fact that he thinks they will lose out on a UCL spot at the end of the season. A lot like Spurs.

And finally, we've come full circle back to Upton Park as it's not Carlos Tevez anymore, but Gianfranco Zola who is providing some news. The Independent reckon he'll be given a new contract as a result of some pretty impressive performances from the Irons so far this season.

The speculation can begin over how much he'll be getting, but with a £10-25m hit coming in the near future, it might not be as good as it once could have been.
