Paper Round
Posted by John Brewin on 03/23/2009

Liverpool's seemingly inexorable rise to their first title in 19 years dominates proceedings. The Sun leads with "Rafa and Gerro warn United" and continues its knacking of shortening names for little reason with Steven Howard's "Now Roo must come up trumps", a paen to the scouser who may yet deny the club he admits to hating.

The rest of that paper is taken up with tributes to Jade Goody - a 16-page pull-out, in fact.

Over at the Mirror Stan Collymore, carving himself out a reputation as a renta-quote whose gob is as attached to his brain as the late Ms Goody. Stan says Liverpool need Jose Mourinho to win the Premier League....er.....and that United must drop Berbatov to win the league. Which suggests that Cannock Chase's most famed visitor may be confused as to the destiny of the title.

In the Daily Mail there's a suggestion that Wayne Rooney may get an extra ban for refusing to leave the field at Craven Cottage. The ever readable Martin Samuel gets involved in the drugs in football debate by quoting a French lab's findings that footballers have the highest rate of steroid use among sportsmen. Those results were gained from a hair test.

Talking of drugs Robinho's awful penalty against Sunderland was bad enough. How about reports that Pele has accused his compatriot of having a drugs problem. Mark Hughes is quoted as saying that Pele "needs to be very careful saying something that can't be substantiated". That's in The Daily Telegraph.

As well as also taking the Robinho line, The Times keeps us updated on England's squad for their matches with Slovakia and Ukraine. Ledley King is the headline-maker because of his Paul McGrath-style non-training regimen.

Let's finish with a bold claim by esteemed columnist Patrick Barclay, who says England can win the 2010 World Cup. He may well be the first to say it but he will not the last. The hype begins here. Emile Heskey and David Beckham hold the key, says Paddy. Is this 2002?
