Paper Round
Posted by Phil Holland on 03/25/2009

Reading Wednesday’s UK papers it is clear that the fiasco surrounding Ledley King’s England call-up is far from over, with a war brewing between the Fabio Capello camp and Tottenham Hotspur.

Despite his chronic knee injury forcing King to leave the England camp without training just 40 hours after being called up, Capello is determined to pick the player again, according to The Times.

This is sure to leave Harry Redknapp apoplectic with rage; the Spurs boss has already made his feelings on the decision clear, which, according to The Independent, has left Capello furious.

In the Daily Telegraph Redknapp is quoted as describing King’s selection as “ridiculous” and “mad” and says it would have been “disrespectful” to Tottenham if King were played in England’s upcoming games.

The Daily Express report that Capello’s right-hand man Franco Baldini has hit back at Harry’s criticism of Capello, and the Daily Star claim that Baldini called Redknapp and demanded Spurs: “Stop breaking our balls!”

Despite the furious reaction at Spurs and despite the fact that King can only play one game a week and cannot train, the Daily Mail report that Capello is unabashed and will pick King in future England squads.

A slightly less incendiary England story is covered in The Sun where Gary Cahill says Capello made a mistake by overlooking his Bolton team-mate Kevin Davies for a call-up.

No offence, Gary, because you may have a point, but frankly Don Fabio probably has bigger things to worry about than whether you approve of his squad selection.

Elsewhere there is good news to be found in the papers, especially if you are a Liverpool fan.

The Daily Mirror, Star, and Sun all carry stories in which, to one degree or another, Steven Gerrard expresses his complete satisfaction with life at Liverpool and hints that he is ready to commit the rest of his career to the club.

With Rafa Benitez’s contract finally done, Gerrard pledging undying love and a genuine chance of the title things look rosy for the Reds.

That is until you get to The Independent, where it is revealed that despite how sweet things look on the surface, behind the scenes at Anfield there remain issues. Big scary ones.

The uncomfortable alliance between co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett will come under scrutiny over the next few months as the July deadline approaches by which they must refinance the £350m debt they’ve racked up since taking over.

The Indy say an overhaul of Gillett’s business interests is not a precursor to a sale of his 50% stake in Liverpool, but rather a sign that he’s getting his ducks in a row before committing himself financially to the club.

And finally, the Daily Mail report that a row is brewing between the FA and English football’s top referees after the decision to rescind Brad Friedel’s red card against Liverpool.

Leading officials are to write to the FA's disciplinary department to demand an explanation, with the implication being that they feel they are being undermined by authorities who set the rules they enforce.
