Paper Round
Posted by Jon Carter on 02/10/2009

Remember the TV show 'The Contender'? Where a collection of wannabe boxers all slug it out over the course of a few weeks to find out who will get a professional contract?

Well there's a similar situation unfurling at Stamford Bridge after the sacking of Luiz Felipe Scolari. Perhaps Roman Abramovich should just gather his shortlist, hand out the gloves and come back in a few hours to see who's left standing.

The papers have gone crazy with speculation over who is the first man on the Blues' shortlist and leave it to the Sun to mess up all the Beckham-to-Milan talk by claiming that AC boss Carlo Ancelotti is top dog.

Experienced, good with the top names and with a record that has already brought Champions League success, Carlo is the favourite, but maybe not until the summer.

The Times meanwhile have Frank Rijkaard and Roberto Mancini in each corner, ready to knock each other out in a bid to grab Roman's attention. Rijkaard has already said he would be keen to ''consider'' the position, but then both of them are out of work so it's hardly a surprise.

The best man for job? Pound for pound the best in the world? Probably Guus Hiddink, say the Daily Mail, but then he's far more interested in his job with Russia and quite keen to help them to a certain 2010 event in South Africa. His links with the Russian owner certainly put him in the frame, and he might just take over for a few months while still keeping his international job.

The long shot? Jose Mourinho. Happy at Inter, but it wouldn't be a paper round-up without some spurious gossip-mongering now would it? He'll probably return, Rocky-like, to Chelsea when he's 84 and win the league again with a team of robots. All while wearing his trademark Armani raincoat of course.

In other sacking related news, who can take over the reigns from poor old Tony Adams at Portsmouth? Not quite the plethora of top names linked with the Chelsea job, but look who it is, an old name raises it's balding head - Sven-Goran Eriksson, say the Telegraph. He's apparently a bit bored with turning Mexico into a second rate side and now rather fancies having a good go at Portsmouth - although Adams was doing a pretty good job himself in that respect.

But the man at the centre of everything? Links to both clubs? And a possible contender for both? Don't say his name three times, it's Avraaaaaam Grant.

The man who has 'something of the night' about him, evidently has something else about him as the Independent have Portsmouth and Chelsea scrapping over his services. Out of work and having priced himself out of a move to the Bulgarian national team [oh well], Avram might just be the man to save someone. But you can guess which end of the table he'd prefer to be at.

Chelsea are expected to announce a decision on their new boss in the next 24 hours, which should give the papers just enough time to find a few more possible candidates. Gianfranco Zola? Roberto Di Matteo? Claudio Ranieiri? Cheer up Blues’ fans, at least Dennis Wise hasn’t been linked yet..

I guess i was right on saturday when i said Scolari wont deliver. The match against Hull showed he didnt know what he had to do.Chelsea needs to move on quickly..Frank Rijkaard should be installed ASAP since we cant get the special one.Its so painful that our team would be struggling for 4th place, if we are not careful 5th position is what we would get..God forbid.
The players need to show they have fire in them.. some players would need to be sold next season regardless of whose ox is gored. The team is again gradually again, this cycle of players is about to end. A football cycle of players should be changed every 3years and we need quality players. Roman & Peter should exercise some patience and allow the new coach to settle down.We must begin to plan for the future now. Chelsea is a great team. The special one would always be special in our hearts..Someday he would be back, we only loaned him to educate the football world.I love chelsea though i'm pained

I think chelsea is wrong too sack scolari now because who can bring this chelsea "old" squad too grab a thropy this season???they should sack scolari in the summer if he not give chelsea any thropy, and replace him with Carlo Ancelotti(who beside him can handle a bunch of "old star" player in the squad?)he had proved it at milan..and get champions league thropy. So "NOW" who they should sign??I think they better sign Avram Grant,he had proved it last season that he can try to win thropy,if he cannot get thropy they can sack him again(poor avram)then sign carlo.the other long term choice they can sign now i think it can be frank rijkaard.:)

i think is very bad for chelsea to sack scolari now because when he came newly,he was doing absolutely well for chelsea.is not question of sacking coach's every time is all about been patient.u can't bring a coach from national team to a club (a big club like chelsea) and expect trouphe immediately.i think there should be a time for those thinks.is good to patient in some certain things.

Frankly, unless you have a person with a much bigger reputation than most of the Chelsea players,
it will be difficult to control and discipline the
present squad. Football players being so big in ego and their worth nowadays find it hard to accept their coach's game plan. More so if they know their performances can either make or break a manager in Chelsea. One must really have the owner's support and confidence in order to command respect among the squad BUT even Avram Grant, known to be a personal friend of Roman wasn't given the chance to develop the squad.
It is really a difficult task for anyone, even Hiddink.

though scolari performed at d begining of d season which was 4 months ago bt you will all agree wit me dat he lost when it matters most, benching wingers, employin 5man midfield options, allowin both left back go forward at will neglectin their role at the back, turnin mikel d standin 4 into a workaholic by coverin for them all in d name of beautiful football that isnt workin for d gunners mean,he smashed our beautiful home record dat we guided jealously 4 nearly 5yrs,we were turned to d whipping team of d big 4,any team now belief they can get sth our of d bridge-a fortress in d days of mourinho and even avram grant, its a sorry case chelsea as a team has broken d heart of we true fans,he had to go otherwise we will be beaten again by d gunners and struggle 4 uefa cup,d player must get their head straight
