On The Move
Posted by ESPNsoccernet Staff on 12/30/2011

The On The Move transfer blog is almost upon us with January 1, 2012, just two days away. Until our rolling transfer service begins in full swing, though, now is as good a time as any to commence a round-up of the rumours doing the rounds as teams consider how, and with whom, they can strengthen in the New Year. Brace yourselves for hearsay abound...

Of course, the biggest transfer story right this moment is that of Thierry Henry's return to Arsenal, which seems all-but a done deal with the Frenchman set to join on a two-month loan. You can read our full story on that developing transfer, right here. And the story has since sprouted further, with Arsene Wenger speaking on the matter, here.

Another transfer that seemingly just needs rubber-stamping is that involving Gary Cahill, who looks poised to wrap up a switch from Bolton to Chelsea after the two sides agreed a fee. Read all about it. But, wait, is it imminent? Villas-Boas has tempered talk by revealing the club and the player are "miles apart" in their contract negotiations. Read about that, right here.

More from AVB - he says Chelsea may be ready to offload a few players in the January window. Full story here.

Elsewhere, The Sun runs with quotes from Chelsea defender Alex stating he is tempted by a return his homeland of Brazil when the transfer window reopens ... West Ham are said to be eyeing a move for Cardiff midfielder Peter Whittingham for around £3 million ... Stoke boss Tony Pulis has ruled out selling striker Kenwyne Jones.

The Mirror reports Barcelona will target Tottenham star Gareth Bale in the summer, but are unwilling to pay over £25 million for the Wales international ... Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas will seek a midfielder, a right-back and a striker, as well as Bolton defender Gary Cahill next month ... Aston Villa and Wolves will battle it out for the loan capture of Arsenal's Emmanuel Frimpong.

The Daily Mail suggests Chelsea could launch an astonishing £84 million bid to land Porto striker Hulk ... AC Milan are to up their ante in their pursuit of Carlos Tevez after confirming the Manchester City man is there top target.

Finally, Swansea have completed the long-awaited signing of Rory Donnelly from Cliftonville. He was also attracting interest from Liverpool and Everton but preferred the switch to South Wales.

Expect much more tomorrow, but, in the meantime, why not have your say on who your club may capture in January via the comments section of this blog. Which areas need addressing? Who should be your side's No.1 transfer target? Let us know.

Manchester united need a midfielder to replace paul scholes...and a standby central defence

SAF doesn't really look like looking to sign someone even though 9 of our first teamers are out in the med bay. with him not giving chances to the youngsters of our squads as well, I'm looking forward to him registering himself for the United roster... Only thing that seems uncertain to me is what position he will play; as we don't really need a striker.

Hulk is obviously not worth that much, I would rather they buy dani alves, neymar and modric for 100 mill (yes it sounds ridiculous, but spending 86 on one player is probably just as likely an outcome)

Chelsea should get G.Cahill,Krasic,Gaitan,R.Van Wolfswinkel and a right back. They should also loan Mceachran and Lukaku and sell Malouda,Anelka,Drogba and Lampard

i want Milan to pick up KaKa from Real Madrid instead of Tevez.

Seeing that King Kenny is keen to get young british talents to liverpool,i think we should go for Wigan's Victor Moses...he has really come of age this season and has looked a driving presence in wigan's frontline....will definitely add pace, power and guile in the reds attack...he will come cheap too in my opinion...about 7-8 million quids..

Posted by Nurudeen on 12/30/2011

Chelsea need 2 get dis players, rb = van der wiel or abate, midfielder = hernanes or moutinho or gotze, winger = hazard or gaitan or callejon, striker = soldado or higuain or pato.

Posted by Lchangho on 12/30/2011

How about kaka to man united? Man u needs a good- brain attacking midfield anyway...

Wayne Rooney is the best player in the world

Moses would be nice for Liverpool. So would Bas Doost.

"Barcelona will target Tottenham star Gareth Bale in the summer, but are unwilling to pay over £25 million for the Wales international"

In related news, I want a new Lamborghini, but I'm unwilling to pay over $50,000 for it.

I think Liverpool need to improve the strikers. We need someone who is well-experienced like Podolski. We have been creating chances but not taking them well.Podolski might be a ideal signing for Liverpool.

All EPL teams should consider buying American players. Top quality teams or mid-table, buying an American player has no harm. The players are cheap because most are not known well, some have good quality (Brek Shea, Landon Donovan) as shown with Jozy Altidore's form for AZ. Worst case scenario, the player ends up as a bit-part role, but he would be cheap, only 1 or 2 million pounds anyway. the major draw is the marketing that the team will gain in America with the purchase of an American. the balance will easily pay off. look at the American popularity of Everton with Landon Donovan and Tim Howard, and of Fulham with Dempsey. Not to mention Rangers with the 3 Americans.

As a Spurs fan, I relish seeing the Gooners in the tank, which they aren't really but bring Henry back is a stroke of genius because what Arse lack right now is that winning mentality. That's what they used to have. They used to wipe the floor with other clubs because they expected to win, and they expected to win becuase of their on filed swagger and leadership. They lack that today so bringing Henry beck is a big problem for us and the clubs around us.

Sir Alex shld b held respnsble if Man U. fail 2 clinch d premiershp title ds season as he's nt shown a sign of going 2 d transfer mkt, eventhou we'v been badly hit, injury wise.

Posted by Rohun on 12/30/2011

Webber should get podolski as a viable replacement for rvp in case he gets injured cuz even though Henry is a great back up he is only there till march and chamakh and park are just not ready to lead the arsenal frontline

Posted by Mayank on 12/30/2011

As a liverpool fc fan,Andy caroll needs 2 be sold soon...cz his game doesn't suit d club...moreover v need a world class striker n a midfielder...tat would help a lot...Moreover i would like 2 suggest sth about chelsea...go fr KAKA,MARKO MARIN 2 get d best out of FERNANDO TORRES...sell DROGBA,ANELKA,MALOUDA...AGE HS TAKEN A HUGE TOLL...v all want a young chelsea...

Posted by aadarsh on 12/30/2011

I think....as SAF is never interested in transfers...there's no chance of many this time as well...But seeing the extent of injuries and the possibility of any further injury.....we should buy a replacement...so that it can be used when needed....
I think what we need is a defensive mid.....who can play defense...as welll as mid....just like jones...only these are the areas that we have a short hand at the momoent...
Still hope the best ...GGMU

i would like to see kaka go to tottenham!! redknapp says he wants to bring in a world class player and madrid are willing to sell him.

King Kenny should opt for real centre forward in Jan,i smell Gonzalo Higuan..definitely a good buy!

Posted by kostka on 12/30/2011

why will barcelona not pay over $25mil for bale? hes phenominal! hes well worth more than $40m in my opinion....Tottenham need one top class player to have a good chance at the title. my suggestion, a top striker with the signing of adebayor or some top calss defense

Posted by Victor on 12/30/2011

Liverpool should sale andy caroll and get a striker like tevez or pato and they should use kuyt as a top striker not as a winger again craige bellamy can play that part well.

Posted by Victor on 12/30/2011

Liverpool should sign krasic and schurrle

Posted by AnArsenalFan on 12/30/2011

Why would Chelsea pay 84 million for Hulk?

That's rank insanity. Wasn't the transfer of Torres and David Luiz enough? It seems Abramovich is reverting to form, thinking that big moneys = big players.

And forgetting that the mainstays of that team (Lampard, Terry, Ivanovic, Cech) arrived relatively cheaply and/or were developed largely internally when they were young.

Wesley sneijer tu man u

Posted by jackes on 01/02/2012

Barcelona should buy neymar before real madrid

Xherdan Shaqiri would be a perfect fit for the gunners as a winger or side midfielder. He obviously is the best player in the swiss league.

Signing striker is a top priority for Liverpool in the Jan window, Suarez ban & off form Carroll does not help the club. I had buy Cavani or Soldado.

Posted by Kennedy on 01/07/2012

I think Osazie Odemwinge of west brom will be a perfect buy for Chelsea as a Striker. The young man is got all it takes to play the Chelsea kind of soccer. AVB will do well to consider him.
