23.40 Well, that is all we have time for tonight. But be sure to check back tomorrow morning for all the latest transfer chatter... when Arsenal might actually buy some.

23.30 Chelsea are willing to throw Salomon Kalou into a player plus cash deal for Tottenham's Luka Modric that already includesYossi Benayoun and a fat cheque, according to the Guardian.

23.15 More on Thiago Alcantara's proposed exit from Barca. AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani says: "I have spoken with Thiago Alcantara's agent, Giovanni Branchini, who is in Forte Dei Marmi on holiday, but Barcelona don’t want to sell him."

23.00: The MLS is lowering its cap charge for international players aged 23 and under, in an attempt to lure more foreign talent to America. The rule will come into effect for the 2012 season.

22.40: You may had heard about Sochaux forward Modibo Maiga boycotting training yesterday. The Mali international was appealing for the club to let him join Newcastle United. Reports are now coming in that he won't be included in their squad to face FC Metalist Kharkiv in the Europa League tomorrow night, adding more weight to the suggestion he could be turning out at St James' Park in the near future.

22.20: Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp was at the FC Twente v Benfica game tonight, casting an eye over Twente winger Bryan Ruiz. If he needed further convincing, Ruiz may well have provided it by scoring an 80th-minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw. It was the 25-year-old's second goal in as many games. He's angling for a move to England and it might just happen.

21.50: "I think Neymar and Ganso need to leave as soon as possible. Same thing goes for Lucas," Rivaldo tells Lancenet in Brazil. That can perhaps wait until January.

20.45: Eddie Johnson is back in MLS, but it yet to get a club, though that will be sorted out in the current window. The striker was released by Fulham this summer.

18.40: Schalke's sporting director Horst Heldt has been quoted at Bild and on the club's official website: "Raul's agent told me that his client does not want to go to Blackburn. He will stay at Schalke. Both our coach Ralf Rangnick and my colleague Peter Peters as well as myself have always stressed that we did not want him to leave. We are pleased that Raul wants to contribute everything he can to make us a sporting success."

18.31: Blackburn Rovers target Raul has reportedly told Schalke he wants to stay in Germany and to reject their offer. The 34-year-old was subject to an official bid from Rovers, prompting Schalke to say they wouldn't stand in the way of a move to the Premier League. But it doesn't look like the Spaniard will be going anywhere this season. Full story

18.05: Cardiff City are reportedly considering a move for Nottingham Forest captain Luke Chambers. The 25-year-old central defender is said to be keen to stay at Forest, but is yet to agree terms on a new deal and only has one year left on his current contract.

17.54: AC Milan's chief executive Adriano Galliano says the club will not be signing Real Madrid midfielder Kaka this summer. "His costs are too high for Milan. He would have to take a much greater wage cut than (Cesc) Fabregas did to go to Barcelona," Galliano told AFP. "We would have to sign Kaka permanently otherwise, due to the Spanish fiscal system (a loan move) would create huge cost problems. Kaka can only move (on loan) within Spain. For us to sign him would mean doing so permanently, not on loan. I'm sorry to disappoint the fans but the Kaka hypothesis is unfeasible..."

17.30: Arsenal's Carlos Vela and Pedro Botehlo will spend the 2011-12 seaon playing in La Liga for Real Sociedad and Rayo Vallecano respectively. Mexican international Vela will undergo a medical before completing his move. Botelho has already spent loan spells in Spain with Salamanca, Celta and Cartagena. The 21-year-old Brazilian is yet to make an appearance for Arsenal's first team.

17.15: Blackburn manager Steve Kean on the club's next move in the transfer market: "I think what we are trying to do is identify the positions we would like to strengthen in the squad. We will always be linked to marquee signings because we were when the new owners came in, but we want to get the right mix and the spine of the team right. After that, if we can add a marquee signing then that is something I would like to do - it would be the icing on the cake." If you scroll down you'll see Rovers have today been linked with a move to Schalke's former Real Madrid legend Raul.

16.50: Croatian international Nikola Pokrivac has left FC Red Bull Salzburg by mutual consent. The 25-year-old midfielder still had a year to run on his deal in Austria. The former Monaco and Dinamo Zagreb man will presumably be looking for a new club as soon as possible.

16.36: Inter Milan midfielder McDonald Mariga could be set for a loan spell in Spain with Real Sociedad, according to Football Italia. The 24-year-old Kenyan international has had limited opportunities at the San Siro, making just 26 appearances since he joined Inter from Parma in January 2010.

16.17: Some more on Norwich City's deal to bring in Liverpool defender Daniel Ayala. The 20-year-old Spaniard has signed a four-year deal at Carrow Road and becomes Paul Lambert's eighth acquisition of the summer. Ayala went out on loan with Derby County last season.

15.38: Goal.com says Tottenham are confident of completing the loan signing of Emmanuel Adebayor within 48 hours.

15.23: You might remember this one from about two years ago, but Sky Sports News says Arsenal are again looking at Torino defender Angelo Ogbonna.

15.07: Rai Sport says Inter Milan could sign Javier Mascherano after Barcelona brought in Cesc Fabregas. Seems a bit odd, given that they’re completely different players and Inter are currently trying to cut costs, but we’ll see.

14.53: Milan are being linked with a move for Bayern Munich star Bastian Schweinsteiger again. The reports seem to include some quotes he gave after the Audi Cup about Milan being “a great club” while failing to include the other stuff he said about not intending to leave Bayern for the time being.

14.36: Liverpool have been linked with a move for Celtic winger Paddy McCourt, but skysports.com thinks they’ve been warned off by the Bhoys.

14.19: Bolton boss Owen Coyle has told the Bolton News: “I'd like to add another striker and a winger. You probably know who they are but finances will play a part in all that." We presume he means David Ngog and Shaun Wright-Phillips, but maybe he still wants Daniel Sturridge.

14.14: Reader comment from Jonas.

"Seriously, Tottenham? whats going on? On every transfer rumour you read it says 'Tottenham are also in the hunt' and nothing, nothing happends. Why did we buy Friedel and not Given!? Why arent we demanding 27m+Sturridge for Modric? Mr. Levy, we all know Tottenhams has plenty of funds!? Raise the salarybar and get some marqueestrikers! Please. Sincerly Jonas, Sweden."

14.00: Arsenal striker Carlos Vela is on the verge of sealing a season-long loan to Real Sociedad, according to talkSPORT. Leaves them a little short up front, as Nicklas Bendtner is also set to leave the club.

13.46: AZ have completed the transfer of right-winger Roy Beerens from Heerenveen for an undisclosed fee.

13.23: Sao Paulo have announced midfielder Ilsinho is available on a free transfer, after new contract negotiations broke down.

13.12: FC Twente's Bryan Ruiz hopes his goal in the Eredivisie at the weekend was enough to encourage interest from Tottenham. "I hope that my goal has removed any doubt from the minds of Spurs and any other clubs," he told Voetbal International. "The reluctance of clubs [to sign me] cannot be to do with my technical skills. I showed what I can do last season with Twente. My physical condition is not a concern. I am fit."

12.59: Update on Diego Forlan, as he says he has received an offer from Inter. ''I have received an offer from the Nerazzurri [Inter]. It would be like a dream come true to move to Milan and play for Inter," Forlan was quoted as saying by La Gazzetta dello Sport. "The only Turkish team that has contacted me are Galatasaray. They're a great club. I haven't been in touch with Besiktas or Fenerbahce. There's not much difference between Turkey and the rest of Europe financially. Turkey is a great country and it would be nice to play there some day."

12.39: DONE DEAL Daniel Ayala has joined Norwich on loan from Liverpool.

12.13: FC Porto have finalised the siging of Standard Liege captain Steven Defour, subject to the Belgium international passing a medical.

11.58: Garry Cook getting excited about the prospect of Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez playing together. "He [Tevez] is still a Manchester City player and to see him playing alongside Aguero is going to be pretty exciting for all the City fans," Cook told BBC Radio Five Live.

11.47: Leicester City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson is waiting for a decision from West Brom target Owen Hargreaves over his future. "I spoke to him finally one week ago," said Eriksson in the Birmingham Mail. "He knows if he wants to come he is more than welcome but for now we have not made an offer to himat all. We have taken in Michael Johnson and Gelson Fernandes so it is not a priority position. Owen is a fantastic player if he is fit. If he wants to come he will phone me for sure."

11.30: Skysports.com understands that Arsenal utility man Emmanuel Eboue has signed a four-year contract with Galatasaray.

11.28: PSV Eindhoven have completed the signing of centre-back Timothy Derijck from ADO Den Haag. The Belgian defender's deal is thought to be worth €750,000 and he said: "PSV are, for me, a real step forward. I'm very excited to come to a club like PSV; it is a big club and I didn't need to think twice about joining.''

11.16: Lyon did not accept Juventus' bids for Michel Bastos, which is why the deal did not get off the ground, according to the player himself. "This is what happened, Juventus made two official offers for me, but OL didn't accept their bids. That was it," Bastos was quoted as saying by France Football. "I needed clarity for myself though. I needed to know where I would play in the new season. I had enough of all the waiting and made my decision. I am staying at Lyon."

10.55: Cesc Fabregas' move to Barcelona from Arsenal could force Thiago Alcantara to leave the Catalan club and according to Sky, Serie A side Roma are lurking in the shadows, preparing to make a loan move.

10.41: Samuel Eto'o will apparently have a medical for his move to Anzhi on Thursday. It was expected to be held today, but has been postponed for reasons we're not entirely clear on.

10.33: It seems Chelsea are getting closer to signing Genk starlet Kevin De Bruyne. Story here.

10.12: Schalke boss Ralf Rangnick says Raul has not asked to leave the club and there have been no enquiries for his services. Rangnick told Bild: "In terms of Raul, it is the same as it is with all of the players of my squad. If he comes up saying he wants to move on we'll look into things. So far he hasn't said anything to me and we've not received any enquiries from any club.''

09.52: Everton are preparing themselves for interest in Jermaine Beckford, as reports suggest he is a £3m target for Championship big-spenders Leicester City.

09.45: They originally wanted Robbie Savage [their loss is ESPN's gain, eh?] but the Vancouver Whitecaps have now set their sights on former Manchester United man Owen Hargreaves.

09.38: DONE DEAL Al Nasr have confirmed the signing of Lazio midfielder Mark Bresciano, for a reported €3.9 million. "Australian player Mark Bresciano arrived late at night in Dubai to join Al Nasr FC for the new season [2011-12]," read a statement on the club's website.

09.32: Atletico Madrid have confirmed their interest in Porto striker Falcao and acknowledged the deal could lead to Diego Forlan's departure. "At the moment we are not interested in selling Forlan, since we have already lost Aguero, but we are currently trying to buy Falcao from Porto," Atleti president Enrique Cerezo told FCInter1908.it. "If we were to close that deal, we would listen to offers for Forlan."

09.20: Martin Jol is being linked with a swoop for Aston Villa defender Luke Young as he looks to replace John Pantsil at Fulham.

09.12: Juventus are not done spending just yet and are keen to add Chelsea defender Alex to their ranks, Tuttosport reports. So far the Turin giants have been put off, but won't give up until a new centre-back arrives.

09.03: Cruzeiro director of football Valdir Barbosa revealed a loan move for Barcelona's Keirrison is close to completion. "It is 95% settled, and it will hardly go wrong. Keirrison needs to handle some small details with Santos," he told Globoesporte. "Tomorrow [Tuesday] or the day after he will be in Belo Horizonte."

08.58: Goal.com says Chelsea will offer Salomon Kalou to Spurs as part of the Luka Modric bid, although given that he was given a start ahead of Didier Drogba, perhaps they value him a little more than is suggested in the piece.

08.53: A-League champions Brisbane Roar have signed Bahrain defender Sayed Mohamed Adnan on a one-year deal. Story here.

08.45: The Metro claims Chelsea will snatch Neymar from under Real Madrid’s noses. As the Santos man doesn’t seem to want to go anywhere till 2012 and Chelsea have refused to meet his release clause, it’s probably best not to take that one too seriously for now.

08.28: Good morning, blog fans. Here's our round-up from the morning's papers.

Daily Mail: Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas is considering a bid for former Porto star Raul Meireles as Liverpool look to offload some midfielders, Leeds are giving former Chelsea striker Mikael Forssell a trial after he left Hannover, despite Nottingham Forest signing Matt Derbyshire and Ishmael Miller this week boss Steve McClaren is trying to sign either Yakubu or Jermaine Beckford from Everton, West Brom have put an £8 million price-tag on Peter Odemwingie.

Daily Mirror: Arsenal have first refusal on Cesc Fabregas if he leaves Barcelona and would get 50% of any sale if they do not buy him back themselves, Nicolas Anelka wants to leave Chelsea as he is not a key part of Andre Villas-Boas’ plans, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has ordered Harry Redknapp to sign a striker and Emmanuel Adebayor is set to sign on loan, Leicester have made a £3 million bid for Jermaine Beckford.

Wenger says that if he finds quality player he is not afraid to spent $20....if this is so then why did he not spent on MATA.. he is quality????? and cahill??? he is quality..Why not spend there?? He thinks they are OVERPRICED....They must only cost $10 for double swap..

Posted by Karim on 08/16/2011

They should stop posting stuff that are not true firtst they say they will offer sturridge and 35 million then they said they will offer benayoun and 30 million now the y say they offe kalou and 30 million maybe they should just make their mind. I think they should offer anelka since it doesnt seem he is in Andre Villas-Boas plans for this year.

Posted by Bernard on 08/16/2011

Rumours flying around linking Alex with Liverpool. What a joke ? However, in the case of Meireles, should KK do not think he is part of his plan, then in KK we trust, Liverpool should cash in on him. However, instead opting for straight cash deal, KK should ask for Sturridge to be part of the deal. He is a good back-up to Carroll. Then, KK should tempt Bolton into releasing Cahill by including N'gog & Kyriagkos into the cash + player deal. Coyle can also choose a range of other fringe players like Wilson, Poulsen, Cole, Aquilani, Shelvey etc. KK can offer the same to Stoke for Shawcross. Another right winger is needed too !

If Raul Meireles price was cheap...better chelsea..buy it..
Why Chelsea still chase Neymar...? It is so good this boy?
I think AVB..look other player..

Dear Arsene & Arsenal Board

For too long I have trusted in your promises that we would reap from the youth team. They are now leaving one by one. Why cant you see that your policy has failed? If we dont get some quality in, true to your words we will end up being a feeder club.

As for the board, Id rather take Manutds debts and be champion.

Salomon Kalou to Spurs, great, thats all spurs need, another striker who has trouble finding the back of the net

I seriously doubt your foresight Mr Wenger. Well, if you don't listen to the faithful Arsenal fans then you would be better off in another club!!!
If you could have signed Kun Auguero well maybe we will be in for something this season. He's a prolific scorer and we've seen that from the 4-0 win of Man City. Instead, you chose to bring in Gervinho who had himself in deep sh+it red card in the first game. He reminds me of the silly mistake this person name eboude made and cost us a win last season...!

So right now, with fab gone ... are you still not going to strengthen the team with the kitty or are you gonna place them in your piggy bank?! Get your act together now for goodness sake! you still have 14 days to bring us a few great signings and you should start off with falcao and mertesacker!!!

i'd accept 6 for beckford.

Posted by Samir Who? on 08/16/2011

Any truth to rumours around the web linking Arsenal to a move for Marvin Martin? He'd be a great fit and could replace that greedy guy who wears 8 here.

Re: Signing Right Player.
Dear Arsene Wenger,
I am sure you are busy pulling things together for tonight's match, wishing you good luck.
However, if you are serious about adding quality to your squad, pls, watch more EPL Monday night games..One just announced himself yesterday..and stop hiding behind a finger (Give Right Value).

Yours,
Arsenal Fans

If the bit about AVB trying to sign Meireles is true, I think we've hit upon Chelsea's new transfer strategy: Buy every Liverpool player that scores on them.

Who says Prof. Wenger has not been very active in the tranfer market? The sale of Delnison,Clichy,Eboue,Fabregas and possibly Nasri and Bendtner proves he has been over Active. Arsenal fans, let this man be,he's trying his best

Posted by Arsenal86 on 08/16/2011

Please tell me why Arsenal won't try to buy Raul Mereiles???

Posted by Manu on 08/16/2011

Since the arrival of cesc at barca has basically set a firm stop to thiago alcantara's rise, why don't arsenal spend some money and buy him. He is young, promising, and surely not worth more than 10mil, seems perfect for frugal wenger...

Meireles would actually fit in nicely in Chelsea although he'd compete with Ramires. Both deserve starting places. As for Arsenal fans saying Wenger should look at Sneijder, Agüero, even Falcao. Arsenal doesn't have that kind of pulling power. A player like Sneijder and a young superstar like Agüero would never think twice about going to the gunners. No hard feelings, I'm also a gunner.
City looked great yesterday. If another fellow argentine can get Tevez in a good that team will be hard to beat. They really don't need Nasri but arsenal should thank them and accept the large offer they're getting for him. I still say go and have look at bremen. Marin and Mertesacker are both great.

Tottenham need to stop posting news about speculation and start forking the money up for that big name striker we need, not more midfield players. They have a fantastic midfield as it is, they have plenty of money to spend, and plenty of offers in front of them for the likes of Crouch, Palacios, and more yet they dont seem to take the bait, even though Redknapp was told to sell.....and what is Levy thinking?? $30m+Kalou or Sturridge is a fantastic deal! With that money they can finally invest in Diarra, they can pick up another top striker (hopefully Falcao) and Ruiz. If I was the manager of Tottenham, we'd easily make top 4....

Posted by Vishal singh on 08/16/2011

I'm very surprised that manutd haven't bought wesley sneijder till now..in today's transfer market clubs like chelsea pay £50mn for flop torres then why can't united pay £35mn for superstar wesley sneijder and give him the wages he deserves..if united doesn't sign him they will suffer in big games aganist opposition like barca,madrid..etc..so SAF snap sneijder as soon as possible n this will be the best summer signing in europe..

The answer to why Atletico would loan a loan signing:

Option to buy. Atletico did not have a place for the player in their starting 11, but may be interested in negotiating an option to buy on the player, so they loan in Pacheco with a negotiated fixed purchase price, then they loan out Pacheco to where he will see some action at a club they can easily scout. Well played Atletico Madrid.

Cheers!
Brian
