On The Move
Posted by ESPNsoccernet Staff on 01/07/2011

With Edwin van der Sar set to retire at the end of the season, Manchester United are in the hunt for a new first-choice stopper (sorry Anders Lindegaard!) and there have been plenty of names thrown into the hat, including the likes of David De Gea and Gianluigi Buffon. The latest player to be linked is Inter Milan custodian Julio Cesar, mainly because of recent comments he made, saying "England is sensational for football because of the atmosphere and fans' passion".

17.35: And that's all we've got time for folks, join us on Saturday for more updates on all the latest transfer gossip and done deals.

17.30: Birmingham have been busy this evening - David Bentley has joined the Blues on loan from Tottenham until the end of the season.

17.16: Valencia have reportedly made tentative enquiries about Getafe midfielder Derek Boateng.

16.51: Rangers have accepted an offer from Birmingham for prolific striker Kenny Miller, according to Sky Sports News.

16.33: Fulham are closing in on the £3.5 million signing of Steve Sidwell from Aston Villa. Cottagers boss Mark Hughes said: "We are just waiting for a little bit of documentation. He has passed his medical, no problems there."

16.08: Swiss side FC Sion have completed a deal for Club Africain's Malian striker Mohamed Traore, who joins the club on a four-and-a-half year deal.

15.51: Manchester City look set to seal the signing of Edin Dzeko, but reader Lenny believes that Roberto Mancini should be focusing on strengthening elsewhere.

Does anyone else believe that Man City over spend on players that arent worth their value?! Gareth Barry and James Milner, seriously!! Milner couldnt take on space 1 on 1 never mind a defender and Barry is way too soft to be a defensive midfielder and not creative enough to be an attacking mid!!

Get Adam Johnson on the field, sign another wide player - NOT Edin Dzeko!! Tevez and Adebayor or Balotelli or even Jo can handle the load up front!! A player like Pablo Aimar would be great for a year or two as the playmaker!! I have no problem with over spending, but get some real value for your money!!

15.33: Juventus have been hit by the news that top scorer Fabio Quagliarella will be out for the season with a knee ligament injury - but fear not Bianconeri fans, as the club have snapped up tall striker Luca Toni.

15.16: Tottenham Hotpsur have completed the transfer of Bongani Khumalo from South African side Supersport United on a four-and-a-half year deal. Full story here.

14.59: Perennial young hope Freddy Adu has moved on to the seventh club of his career, signing for German Second Division side Ingolstadt. The club's coach Benno Mohlmann said: "We know his history, we know he has not confirmed in recent years the potential he showed when he was 15-16 years old." American teenage prodigy Adu, who is now 21 - I know, it brought gasps of shock from ESPNsoccernet HQ too - has already played in the USA, Portugal, France and Greece.

14.45: Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier has confirmed his interest in signing Manchester City full-back Wayne Bridge on loan. Houllier said: "There has been dialogue (regarding Bridge). It is true we have been talking to them.''

14.40: Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is hoping to bring Inter Milan midfielder Sulley Muntari and PSG's Benin international Stephane Sessegnon to the Stadium of Light on loan this month. Full story here.

14.27: L'Equiphttp://blogs.espncricinfo.com/MT/images/formatting-icons/link.gife reports that Benfica have signed 23-year-old Argentine Jose Luis Fernandez from Racing Club for €1.5 million. Benfica fans will be hoping he can replicate the success of compatriot Angel Di Maria, who starred in Portugal before moving to Real Madrid last summer.

14.08: As usual in On the Move, the Liverpool comments are flooding in - with the latest coming from Seth, who has launched an impassioned defence of Brazil midfielder Lucas. Well, I guess someone has to.

LUCAS- What defensive midfield problem? Lucas is irreplaceable in the side. He lifts morael in the camp while being a steady influence on the field and a consistent performer. Central Midfield is the one place that Liverpool has plenty of depth (Gerrard, Lucas, Meireles, Shelvey, Spearing, and Cole if necessary) and is the last position that needs strengthening.

13. 46: Birmingham are confident of sealing a deal for Spurs striker Robbie Keane in "the next few days".

13.23: West Brom left-back Nicky Shorey has urged the club to complete the signing of his former Aston Villa team-mate John Carew, who is reportedly on the brink of a move to the Hawthorns.

13.11: Galatasary seem to be mentioned umpteen times a day in this blog and today is no different - though they have actually signed someone. Argentinean midfielder Juan Culio has moved to Turkey for €2 million from Romanian side CFR Cluj.

12.48: Blackburn boss Steve Kean says he is still optimistic on the club's chances of signing Ronaldinho, though he may be the only person who is! Kean told the Mirror: "No it's not over, as far as I'm aware that hasn't happened, It seems to have gone back on, and gone a little bit more positive in the last 24 hours rather than negative which is encouraging.

12.20: Genoa are willing to let Giuseppe Sculli leave for Roma this month, but only if they get Matteo Brighi in return, according to Football Italia.

11.58: CONFIRMED: Highly-rated young Tottenham striker John Obika has signed for Peterborough on loan until the end of the season.

11.34: Tottenham are expecting a deal to be done for LA Galaxy star David Beckham before this Sunday.

11.21: gerard Houllier is reportedly interested in bringing Borussia Dortmund No.1 Roman Weidenfeller to Aston Villa. The 30-year-old is available on a free transfer in the summer, but quite why he would want to swap the Bundesliga leaders for relegation-threatened Villa is anyone's guess.

11.08: CONFIRMED: Former Manchester United reserve team captain James Chester has joined Championship side Hull City for an undisclosed fee.

10.48: Edin Dzeko has passed a medical at Manchester City but has yet to officially sign. But the Bosnian striker looks certain to move to Eastlands and he says that he can guide Roberto Mancini's side into the Champions League.

10.26: Be sure to keep leaving us your comments and any rumours you may have heard through the grapevine. That's what eddie has done, suggesting that Liverpool need a more capable defensive midfielder than Lucas or Christian Poulsen:

I think Liverpool should go for Ghana defensive midfielder Antony Annan, who plays just like Makelele. He is also one of the best defensive midfielders in Noway and had a wonderfull World Cup, he will be able to solve the Reds' defensive midfield problem.

10.19: Fiorentina are ready to get rid of Adrian Mutu after he walked out on training , but while Cesena had previously been touted as a likely destination, Galatasary have now emerged as leading contenders for the troubled striker's signature.

10.08: We reported yesterday that Wigan had made enquiries about a loan move for Hamburg starlet Eljero Elia. Well I'm sorry Latics fans, but the Netherland international appears to have his sights set a little higher. Elia said: "Clubs such as Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester United really are something special." And Wigan, Eljero, and Wigan.

09.42: Manuel Almunia's Arsenal career could be nearing an end, with Atletico Madrid, Malaga and Galatasaray all poised to offer the out-of-favour Spaniard and Emirates exit.

09.29: Cameroon midfielder Jean Makoun appears to be on his way out of Lyon, with Turkish giants Fenerbahce and Premier League strugglers Aston Villa hoping to secure his services.

09.18: Arsenal are favourites to land Lille's highly-rated Belgian winger Eden Hazard, though it's likely the Gunners would have to fork out £15 million for the 19-year-old, who has also been a target for Manchester United and Real Madrid.

09.00: Our transfer news hound Harry Harris has been sniffing around Upton Park and a reliable source has informed him that West Ham have upped their bid for Hoffenheim striker Demba Ba to £7 million.

08.48: Bolton have their sights set on Middlesbrough defender David Wheater, as they brace themselves for Gary Cahill's exit to either Liverpool or Chelsea, according to the Mail.

08.44: The Mirror is reporting that Birmingham midfielder Seb Larsson is on his way to Newcastle in a £1.5 million move. The Swede has just six months left on his contract and Alex McLeish is keen to cash in if he can't tie him down to a new deal.

08.34: Firstly, a scout round the English press. The red-tops are usually pretty good value for transfer gossip.

The Sun: Arsenal are considering swooping for Porto's Colombian striker Falcao, who has scored 18 goals in 24 games this season; Manchester United are tracking Inter Milan goalkeeper Julio Cesar, who is believed to be interested in a move to the Premier League after he said: "England is sensational for football because of the atmosphere and fans' passion."

The Mirror: Man City are holding on to Roque Santa Cruz, at least until Blackburn will agree to turn a potential loan move into a permanent deal at the end of the season; Birmingham are steping up their interest in Blackpool talisman Charlie Adam, though Blackburn are waiting in the wings; Aston Villa look set to land Wayne Bridge from Man City, while Villa midfielder Steve Sidwell now appears to be on his way to Fulham.

08.20 GMT: Hello everyone and welcome to another day of transfer gossip, rumours and hopefully some actual deals if we are lucky. Edin Dzeko is expected to be confirmed as a Manchester City player today, while Robbie Keane could sign for Birmingham. You can bet your bottom dollar that West Ham will be linked with someone too!

Ok , so Cahill leaves Bolton and goes to Liverpool.... does he assume a starter's role ???

Posted by inyagi patrick on 01/07/2011

I feel arsenal, as a club, need an experienced defender and not a striker. I hope wenger will improve the Arsenal defence, because there is no leadership there at the moment.

Posted by sheriffbiobakudonshevy on 01/07/2011

Quite fascinating stories. I just want to see what monsieur wenger is up to in the weeks ahead. And I am also expecting Chelsea to make some signings.

Posted by eddie on 01/07/2011

..back again.

So, i read that Man City are selling... what i want to know is , who are they selling ???

Posted by the_monk on 01/07/2011

Torres is self-conceited...no drive. He only raises his game in big games and home ties. He needs competition: bring on LUIS SUAREZ.

Or a big man to win the ball in the area: LACINE TRAORE or closer to home CARLTON COLE (i know most liverpool fans dont wanna hear that but i seem to agree with Hodgson on that one)

GLENN JOHNSON needs real competition at the right back (He's been awful;almost at bad as Konchesky)

GARY CAHILL, if bought should go in straight. SKRTEL doesn't jump and makes too many mistakes. AGGER's defensive decisions are too often suspect but he is an asset moving the ball up-field.

HODGSON needs time and players to drive real competition amongst the best players.

MAXI is a tremendous player: does throw away begging chances at times but works well with the defence, midfield and with torres whenever the latter comes to the party.

FERNANDO's attitude is a bigger problem than HODGSON's tactics

I heard rumours that Man Utd want to sign Lass Diiarra. Why they want him i have no idea. The teams who really need him are Spurs and Liverpool.

Posted by r.A.o. on 01/07/2011

Any news on whether the rumour is true of Lassana Diarra interested in joining Manchester United?

Posted by MR MANG on 01/07/2011

Imagine United with Julio Cesar, what a fantastic pick-up that would be.... But seriously, why would Inter let agruably the world's best leave? Surely not just because he admires the fans in Englands passion! De Gea is a more likely happening, but i think United goes cold this transfer period and signs no one. Pepe Renia would look nice in the line-up though!!

Posted by Jack on 01/07/2011

Well, Newcastle should have signed a striker to reduce the burden of Andy Carrol, probably Robbie Keane could offer support to Andy.

Over the years, Kuzsczak should have been given the change to shine at Manchester United, I just dont know why Fergie doesn't opt to play him all the time. Iit's a waste for the Polish goalie.

Man Utd should look for a winger as they only have Park and Nani for big games while Giggs is coming to the end of his career and Obertan isn't quite ready - a player of Frank Ribery 's quality is needed.

Posted by Lenny on 01/07/2011

Does anyone else believe that Man City over spend on players that arent worth their value?! Gareth Barry and James Milner, seriously!! Milner couldnt take on space 1 on 1 never mind a defender and Barry is way too soft to be a defensive midfielder and not creative enough to be an attacking mid!!

Posted by Tom on 01/07/2011

Couldn't agree with the_monk more. I would even sell Torres if it could bring 2 other quality strikers into the side. Ones who work! Speaking of which, I'd like to see Kuyt and even Babel play more. Kuyt on the wing, Babel up front.

Cahill?! Interesting... I'd like to see Agger more, but I agree Skr/Kryg is not working. ..and those two paired with Konchesky (god why couldn't WE have signed Salcido) and Johnson - is a disaster waiting to happen!

Posted by zaki on 01/07/2011

@Seth
I'm not sure where you got this opinion of Lucas but recent results would suggest that he's not the quality defensive midfielder that you think he is. They just gave up 3 goals to Blackburn, and 3 to Newcastle not to long ago. Lucas has never lived up to potential and is a quality squad player at best. If Liverpool wants to contend for anything they need to get stronger at defensive mid. Lucas scrambles around and does a decent job but they need someone more composed that will sit in front of the back 4 and break up play, and then have the ability to release the ball to the front players.

Posted by JoeUSA on 01/07/2011

What is Steve Kean talking about? Talking up his chances of signing an over-priced player who would not help his side, and who has also already moved to another club!

Posted by TUNDE on 01/07/2011

Lucas? For me he is not good enough for a top 4 team in the premiership. As a defensive midfielder he has no special qualities and also not particularly good in any of the key functions attached to the role. Besides, he is woeful with headers, cannot score goals and clumsy in tackles. A few good games here and there cannot make Lucas irreplaceable as alluded to by Seth.

Liverpool needs a gritty but skillful defensive midfielders who can break up attacks and set up play. Gerrard has proved that his best position is behind the top striker where he can be express his creative skills and also contribute to goals. Merelies is the closest to a good central midfielder for now.
Liverpool is also lacking wingers as Kyut and Rodriguez are no wingers. They are not particularly pacy and skillful to stretch teams and create opening for Torres and Gerrard. Maybe Glen Johnson should be moved forward as he's awful as a defender.
Defensively, Liverpool is perhaps one of the weakest in the Premiership

Posted by mujiba on 01/07/2011

What liverpool need is another striker. The kind of striker they need is one that can dribble and attack defenders. Someone like "A Nani' who can attack and command the attention of two defenders. The minute that happens Torres will be open all the time and then we will see what a good finisher/striker Torres is. The way it is now, our strikers are constantly receiving the ball with their backs to the goal. This will not work.

Posted by Brad on 01/07/2011

Please Wenger, for the love of god, don't go spending your money on players we don't need like Hazard and Falcao. All we need personally, is a defender, and there's one out there. Barca has let Gabriel Milito take permission to go find another club, for a small fee we can pick him up and upgrade our defense and title hopes at the same time!!!

Posted by Amanuel on 01/07/2011

I agree with the defensive problems of Arsenal. But there is also a problem in substitution. The gunners need a substitution at the right place in the right time.If you remember the game against Wigan.

Posted by haris on 01/07/2011

taking to the idea ,man united need specealist to replicate edwin's goal handie,i'd also like to hear new experienced wide player such ribery's quality, but perhaps not ribery..with the reason to get attacking goal scorer in the same time,i think, podolski would benefit Man utd..left footed and speedster in left side..but surely cologne would'nt let him go in the january..but i believe with rooney saga, fergie has his own sight,, (:

To suggest that Lucas is a sufficient defensive midfielder in the Premier League is crazy. The fact is Liverpool haven't been the same since losing Xabi Alonso. Couple that with the loss of Mach and they get bossed in the midfield by nearly every English side (including Rovers and Wolves)! The drop in quality from Alonso and Macherano to Lucas is unbelievable for a squad that hopes to get back to the top four.

Lucas and Ngog are fine players for the Europa League but can't cut it against the physical players in the Prem. The Reds need a strong defensive midfielder to free up Stevie G to be the creative force that he is.

They also need a legitimate second striker, one or two true wing players, and more depth in defense. It's going to be a long way back...

Posted by Anonymous on 01/07/2011

@lenny they must be doing something right or they woudnt be 2nd in the league

Posted by yankredfan on 01/07/2011

To me, Liverpool's problems are simple: A glut of central midfielders, no creativity on the wings, no second striker, aging defense and no left back. Been the same problems for several years now.

With a focus on youth (and as a parameter, I'm looking at players under 25), I imagine Commoli might look at some of these players:

Second Striker: Kevin Gramiero, Lorient, if we can offload Jovanovic.

Defense: Mamadou Sakho, PSG to replace Krygiakos and / or Agger and partner with Wilson. On the left, Davide Santon, Inter, who we are already linked with.

I don't trust Cole or Babel, so a real creative midfielder seems necessary . While Hazard would be a dream true, how about Balasz Dzsudzsak from PSV? Georginio Wijnaldum from Feyenoord, who worships Kuyt? Adem Ljajic from Fiorentina?

Just tossing out some ideas, I'm sick of hearing Liverpool being linked with so much rubbish

Posted by Tim on 01/07/2011

Forget Suarez and A.Young. Three practical signings can save Liverpool from further embarrassments - Gary Cahill, Charles N'Zogbia, and M.Diarra. Sell Babel, Jovanovic, Poulsen and maybe Skrtel to fund the moves. Let Kurt play as a striker. Johnson push up, Kelly at right back. 4-4-2.

Posted by Emmanual @ RSA on 01/07/2011

Why Man City are busy signing strikers is not understandable, don't get me wrong Edin is a quality player. But I just think they know they have set them self a time bomb that will see the departure of Teves, Ade & Mario... My guess is two of the three is going to leave in summer & city are still going to surprise us and go for Torres also watch this space.

Posted by Seth on 01/07/2011

@Kazi-

I understand where you are coming from but you have to keep in mind that 1) Lucas isn't a defensive midfielder, he is a CM who was asked by Rafa to fill the shoes of Mascherano. He was partnered with Gerrard under Rafa who was utilized as the AM and Lucas was then pigeonholed as a DM. 2) Hodgson does not necessarily have the side aligned the same way that Rafa did. There is no true defensive midfielder. If you watch Lucas and Meireles together you can see the understanding between them. They are both CM's. One of them does have to shoulder more defensive responsibility, but that shifts throughout the game. When Lucas attacks, Meireles covers and vice-versa. 3) I'm not sure how you can claim those goals as Lucas' responsibility. I'm not saying he lights the world on fire, but he's consistent, and he is still young. I think it might be better to analyze the failings of the back four if you want to discuss giving up easy goals. Our outside backs have been tbc

Posted by Seth on 01/07/2011

Continued- horrendous all season long, often leaving acres of space behind them without the speed of foot or thought to get back. Regardless of who has been @ CB the mistakes are many. Posititioning has been completely off and they lack the speed to make up for it. Silly errors by the back 4 have contributed to far more of the goals than any failings of Lucas.

I'll admit, I'm biased. I like the guy, he plays with heart and I've never seen him quit, even when the Anfield crowd didn't stand behind him. He's shown flourishes of great potential over the years and has rarely had a lapse in form. Consistency in CM from a young player asked to fill huge shoes. A guy who has consistently improved each season. Not sure what more you can ask for.

Posted by Seth on 01/07/2011

To sum it up....is he the best player on the field? No. But, other positions need more immediate attention before we bother messing with the rest. How about another striker? A couple wingers who will actually try and beat a man? Outside backs who don't look lost and CB's that command the back line rather than crumple? I think those positions should be looked out before we worry about CM. Who says we have to play with a DM anyway?

Posted by Eric on 01/07/2011

may i know the new players that Chelsea have signed.they need very good strikers, types like Eto's, Torres,Nilmar etc because drogbe and anelka are old they are always out paced for balls.and a second keeper not what they have ,Turnbull doesn't know anything.

Posted by Jack on 01/08/2011

@zaki
Did you really just blame the 3 goals against Blackburn on Lucas? The first goal, was awful defending by Johnson and Skrtel and Kyrgiakos weren't back. The second goal, was poor defending by Kyrgiakos. The third goal was horrendous play from Skrtel. Hard to blame that kind of result on Lucas's play as a defensive mid when you are playing a backline of Johnson(should be tried on the right wing, can't defend), Skrtel, Kyrgiakos(a central pairing that simply isn't good enough), and Konchesky(not good enough). Liverpool need to get a winger in this window firstly(hopefully N'Zogbia), then we need more help in central defense and at left back before we look at a luxury improvement at defensive mid over Lucas who has been one of the best players for Liverpool so far this season.

Posted by craig fyzal on 01/08/2011

i think Liverpool should buy another striker. Why not kun aguero or fernando llorente. They can work well with torres. Defend is the main problem now. With carragher injured, all defenders seem forget how to defend.

Posted by ogunnaike omotunde gabriel on 01/08/2011

i believe the problems in chelsea is not the coach but its management, if the mgt can release money to buy new player to add to the remaining scords and to cover for the lives of injured ones, the stories will dramastically change. look for examples machester city they are still buying upon all the stars they have and they are getting the result. chelsea should enter market for the new striker and the defence, those area are the liking area that is affecting them. last season that chelsea got the lives of ballack and others who left chelsea this summer the coach proved him self by winning double for the club on like now that there was know bench. chelsea should do something in this january transfer as to be able to qualify for the champions league.

Posted by tktlpool on 01/08/2011

I don't think the whole Liverpool squad is bad. Except Lucas and N'Gog. These are the 2 players that need to seriously buck up or ship out. I totally agree that a world-class defensive midfielder should be the main priority as Lucas has been horrendous in the last 3-4 games. Diarra/Annan would be good replacements. As for N'Gog, seriously with a partner like N'Gog I don't blame Torres for sulking. N'Gog just doesn't cut it for me in the EPL. IMO replace him with any strikers for sale in Man City or make a move for Demba Ba/Ledesma/Lopez(Catania). He's just plain awful. As for defence, while I do like Cahill i think he is overpriced. I still have a strong belief that Agger/Skrtel will be a solid partnership. The Big Greek is horridly low on confidence and Carra is out. So just stick to Agger/Skrtel. My main concern is the fullbacks. Johnson is not consistent in his defending while Konchesky is not providing any attacking thrust with some very dodgy defending in some games. Insua pls!

Posted by smith on 01/08/2011

livepool need a player like Lass Diiarra for Real Madrid .livepool need a black man in there defensive midfielder.why Gerrard will be upfont to do the job for torres... really livepool 2 black man in that term....

Agreed with zaki on Lucas. Liverpool need and miss badly a player of Xabi Alonso calibre who can break up play and release the ball upfront.

Posted by ren_dog on 01/08/2011

why aren't arsenal going for GRAY CAHILL? all the other centre-back's we have are NO GOOD bar vermaelen. If we want to win the premier league we need another descent centre-back. Arsene Wenger needs to wake up and spend a little big of cash!

Posted by shubham on 01/08/2011

liverpool should sign players like bentley,

they should go for lassana diara ,
they can again go for robie keane
they should sell players like poulsen, konchesky.

Posted by harshMarshChucktown on 01/08/2011

Personally I've never been impressed with Lucas, he doesn't have any of the good brazilian qualities (total control) and at the same bloody time he doesn't come off as a good holding midfielder neither I don't know he gets such praise. Nonetheless, i'm not calling him a terrible player. I completely agree with Tom's post what the hell is Mancini doing not playing Adam Johnson! What else must the youn man do! also, I think playing Jo against Arsenal was risky because AJ could have been the difference but I think Mancini was thinking of the transfer window when he selected Jo and that somehow another premier league manager would be convinced that Jo really was something special and had the ability to be in this 2nd place MAn City squad. What did Jo Show me? That he's crap just likr Gareth Barry and Milner have been. This belief in Barry must stop, capello made the same mistake
