On The Move

Chelsea are eager to sign a new defender, with two targets in mind: Simon Kjaer and David Luiz.

David Luiz and Simon Kjaer

23.55: That's all for the transfer blog for tonight. Thanks for joining us - we'll be back again tomorrow morning.

23.18: Mexico international Nery Castillo has signed for Greek side Aris on loan from Shakhtar Donetsk.

23.12: Leeds boss Simon Grayson says there are no plans to sell any players this month. "Hopefully the ambition of the players can be fulfilled here - we are not a selling club and don't need to sell anybody."

22.50 Former Aston Villa striker Juan Pablo Angel is on the move, he has joined David Beckham at the LA Galaxy after his contract with the New York Red Bulls expired.

21.33: Toulouse defender Franck Tabanou is attracting interest from Inter, according to his agent, but he won't move until June.

21.05: Everton striker James Vaughan appears to be close to sealing a loan move to Celtic.

20.35: The talk of Luis Suarez heading to Liverpool has been heating up, but reader Ken is dampening expectations.

I am a big liverpool fan and to anyone who thinks we can get sergio ramos to sign for us is an idiot and NESV aren't going to spend tons of money in the winter window because players are overpriced and they know that. They have spent money on the Red Soxs because they have made money there and i would like to see them make a move, but if you remember John Henry said when they move for a player they do not want the media circling them. I want Suarez bad to be at Liverpool, but dont be surprised if we get Arda Turan or Keisuke Honda because they have both been quiet this window and Kenny is fond of them both.

20.31: The BBC is reporting that Jose Bosingwa - out of contract in the summer - is set to sign a new one-year deal soon. Milan hinted they could make a summer move for the 28-year-old recently.

19.46: Zamalek have announced that Ghana midfielder Ibrahim Ayew has joined Belgian side Lierse.

19.21 Sampdoria full back Reto Ziegler is being linked with a move to Serie A leaders AC Milan according to Football Italia. Zsolt Laczko's move to Samp apparently frees up the former Spurs man to make the switch.

19.06 Chelsea have had a third bid for Benfica defender David Luiz rejected, with the Portuguese club understood to be holding out for £25 million for the 23-year-old. Read all about that transfer battle here.

18.45: The Express & Star says Wolves are closing in on the deal for Barnsley winger Adam Hammill.

18.37: Former Juventus director Luciano Moggi isn't impressed with the club's recent signings. “We need to look at the immediate needs," he said. "Luca Toni obviously isn't a name for the future. As for Antonio Floro Flores, he's a reserve at Udinese…”

18.01: Liverpool chairman Tom Werner, asked if the club could still bring in big names like Fernando Torres, said: "Yes. Look at our history. We will be driven by value but we certainly have the resources to have some targets. We are in this for the long-term and every pound that we make will strengthen the club. We do have great resources."

17.44: Marca claims Sporting defender Jose Angel wants to join Malaga.

17.20 Tottenham's Luka Modric has rejected speculation he could leave for a Premier League rival or move abroad. "There's no truth in all these rumours," he told Sportske Novosti back in Croatia."The only truth is that I'm a Tottenham player and I'm happy to be where I am. I'm fully focused on my job. Following my arrival in 2008 every transfer window is the same. Newspapers are always talking about me moving away." Yes, these transfer tittle tattlers really are a pest...

17.00 Reports in Ghana suggest Sulley Muntari is wanted by Sunderland and Everton.

16.57 Does anyone want him? Robbie Keane isn't wanted by Sunderland either. Story here.

16.24 AC Milan look set to miss out on Christian Eriksen, who has revealed to Voetbal International he is happy to remain with Dutch giants Ajax. At just 18, he is not yet ready to take the next step.

15.52 Mirko Vucinic's agent has insisted the striker has no desire to leave Roma after being linked with both Tottenham and Inter Milan.

15.49 More on Lukaku from our man in Belgium: "According to French magazine Sport/Foot, Anderlecht's highly rated teenager, Romelu Lukaku, will move to Manchester City at the end of the current season. Sport/Foot quote a "reliable source" who says the player's agents will travel to Manchester today to finalise contract talks, which have supposedly taken 15 days. Lukaku's manager formally denies the rumour. Should the move materialise, Lukaku, a hot favourite to win Belgium's Golden Boot award this evening, would link up with fellow Belgians Dedryck Boyata and Vincent Kompany."

15.46 Watford have signed Aston Villa striker Andreas Weimann on loan until the end of the season. That will pay a small proportion of Darren Bent's wages.

15.36 La Gazzetta dello Sport is reporting that Sampdoria have told Milan they must bid more if they want to sign former Spurs defender Reto Ziegler.

15.29 Striker David Trezeguet is being linked with a move back to Italy with AC Milan after just six months in Spain with Hercules.

15.22 Sunderland midfielder Jack Colback is a loan target for both Blackpool and Preston North End.

15.16 Aston Villa have insisted they did nothing wrong in their move for Darren Bent after Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn seemed to suggest there was something fishy about it.

15.05 Chelsea are stepping up their bid for Benfica centre-back David Luiz, but are also looking at Danish star Simon Kjaer as a back-up if they cannot persuade the Brazilian to move.

14.59 SPL side Celtic have released Olivier Kapo after he failed to make an impact on a short-term contract.

14.54 Could Liverpool be priced out of the market for Luis Suarez? If so, it's rumoured they could turn to Sevilla forward Alvaro Negredo - a player who turned down Hull City in the summer of 2009.

14.41 Valon Behrami is eager to leave West Ham and move to Fiorentina, but the deal appears to have hit a snag. "Will I come to Florence? Good question. At the moment my arrival in Florence is far from certain," Behrami told Corriere Fiorentina.

14.29 Udinese have bolstered their ranks with the signing of Joel Ekstrand From Helsingborg. "It feels sad to leave the club that I love, but incredibly inspiring to get the chance to play in one of Europe's best leagues," said the 21-year-old defender.

14.12 All that talk of Romelu Lukaku having moved to Manchester City appears to be false. Though he is almost certain to leave Anderlect in the summer.

13.56 Veteran Birmingham City striker Kevin Phillips looks ready to move on after growing tired of sitting on the bench. Phillips said: “I’ve had a chat with the manager and he’s said that I can go if the right offer comes along. It’s a bit disappointing but I accept that, at this stage in my career, perhaps I need to be playing games."

13.47 It seems Stéphane Sessegnon is effectively going on strike to force a move to Sunderland by refusing to train with PSG. “The most important thing is that Stephane returns to the group again. He's part of the family and we want him to stay," said club president Robin Leproux.

13.32 Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic looks set to be rewarded for his performances this season with a new deal. Both AC Milan and Juventus are said to be monitoring the situation forcing Chelsea to act before he moves into the final year of his current contract.

13.19 Brazil teen sensation Ganso could move to European football shortly, but he seems to be in no hurry to make the natural move away from South American football. "Of course I would like to play in Europe but in due course," he said. "My present and my future is Santos. Now I'm injured and I just want to get well soon so I can help my club in the Copa Libertadores."

13.12 Shaun Wright-Phillips is attracting the attention of Fulham and Newcastle, and his agent has revealed that the Manchester City winger is not short of options. "My understanding is that Fulham have made an enquiry for Shaun, as have Newcastle," Wayne Lindsay said. "There are two other clubs also showing an interest, one loan and one permanent. There is also interest from a French club, but these are all options Shaun will have to consider."

13.01 Both Everton and Liverpool are being linked with Wolves midfielder Matt Jarvis, who is one of few players from Molineux that would interest other Premier League clubs.

12.50 Just as it seemed certain Cardiff (and England!) striker Jay Bothroyd would sign a pre-contract agreement with Newcastle United, it is now being suggested that Sunderland could try and usurp their neighbours as a replacement for Darren Bent.

12.36 Genoa have insisted that there is no chance they will sell full-back Domenico Criscito, who has been linked with Milan, Napoli, Inter and Fiorentina. President Enrico Preziosi told Sky Sports Italia that “Criscito won't move from Genoa even if there was a bomb".

12.15 Even more West Ham. Monaco are to bid £1.5m for West Ham defender Herita Ilunga, according to L'Equipe.

11.48 Valon 'Bit of an animal' Behrami, wants to leave West Ham, Harry Harris tells us. Fiorentina want him but are not prepared to pay the £4.5 million that the Hammers want and are offering 2 million euros on a drip. He may stay homesick for a while. Story here.

11.44 Demba Ba has been one of the transfer window's leading lights. He's already failed a medical at Stoke City, and West Ham are circling too. Stoke are willing to take hin on loan but Hoffenheim want the money to fund their purchase of Ryan Babel. Confused? Read our story here.

11.29 Twitter-tattle time. Ben Lyttleton, expert on Franco football, says a Belgian magazine Sport/Foot report that Romelu Lukaku will join Manchester City this summer. Just what they need, another striker. Dzeko to be sold this summer?

11.23 Big news on the Moss Rose estate. Simon Yeo has re-signed for Macclesfield Town.

11.06 The Real Madrid needing a striker condundrum will not be solved by a Ruud Van Nistelrooy return. HSV Hamburg won't let him go, and that's that. Even though he really wants to go. Hamburg boss Armin Veh told Deutsche Presseagentur: "There is a clear decision of our club: we are not going to let Ruud van Nistelrooy leave.I have respect for him and his point of view, I am aware he is very keen on residing in Madrid after the end of his career. I have a huge respect for his intensions and for him as a person, but he is under contract at our club. He is finally in great shape right now and him leaving is a clear no-go for us."

10.27 Remember when Manchester City were hailed for the quality of their academy. It was a couple of years ago now, and events, dear boy, events, have taken over since then. One of their starlets, Kelvin Etuhu, is set to leave the club after refusing a new contract. A Championship destination looks likely with Nottingham Forest, Middlesbrough, QPR and Blackpool all linked. And, yes, we know Blackpool are Premier League now. Coventry, however, are not interested at all.

10.20 Sebastian Larsson is a player linked with several clubs, and Blackburn is the latest, according to the Lancashire Evening Telegraph. He's no Ronaldinho or Beckham, but he does have to compete with David Bentley nowadays.

10.05 Nicklas Bendtner is not interested in going to West Ham, according to his dad, also his agent. "That's not interesting," Thomas Bendtner told Ekstrabladet. "If Arsenal want to sell and have set a price, then that's up to them. That's nothing that we have been involved in. I can only say that this is nothing of interest to us." Bendtner watched West Ham from the sidelines as an unused sub last week and can have been none too impressed. Story here.

10.03 Celtic have loaned out misfit defender Jos Hooiveld has moved to FC Copenhagen and we think he's eligible to play in the Champions League for them against Chelsea.

9.49 David Wheater was once highly rated by many but has been a victim of Middlesbrough's decline. He looks in line for a move to Bolton and back to the Premier League but that move will likely see many wonder about the future of Gary Cahill.

9.43 The Journal, a Newcastle paper, has Shaun Wright-Phillips heading Toon-side, with wages not a problem, they say.

9.32 Perhaps sillier is The Guardian's linking of a Real move for Van Persie, which we can't see here.

9.23 Comedy for Chelsea fans here. Claudio Pizarro, he of the acceleration of an HGV, is now linked with Real Madrid, according to newspaper Generacion. Well, Mourinho did sign him, we think, which begs the question why. Jose didn't stay much beyond his July 2007 transfer to Chelsea so perhaps didn't see him at his one-paced peak.

9.10 Here's one to put all of Europe's big boys on alert. Sergio Ramos wants away from Real Madrid, after a bust-up with Cristiano Ronaldo and henceforth Jose Mourinho. Full story here.

9.03 Kenny Miller to Bursapor, which seems an odd one. Walter Smith seems equally confused. "We don't know whether he is away yet or not," said Smith. "Both clubs haven't agreed a fee. I think Kenny and his advisors have agreed their part with Bursaspor. We'll just have to wait and see if they can reach agreement with our own club."

8.41 Real Madrid midfielder Lassana Diarra will not be leaving the club this month and will fight for his place in the team, according to his agent. Diarra has been linked with moves to Manchester United, Liverpool, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain, but agent John Williams claims that his client is 'satisfied' at the Bernabeu, despite only featuring in 12 games this season. Story

8.38 Thomas Ince of Liverpool may well be linking up with daddy Paul at Notts County, depending on how a chat with Kenny Dalglish. He's been there on loan before. According to the Liverpool Echo, "Liverpool will only agree to send Ince back out on loan to the League One club if he pens a new deal. But so far, the midfielder is unwilling to commit his long-term future to the Reds."

08.03: Fulham are now favourites for Southampton's Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain after Arsenal refused to let youngster rejoin Saints on loan.

07.52: Ryan Babel's agent has revealed his client's preference for Ajax. Winnie Haatrecht said in the Sun: ''Hoffenheim will only be an option if Ryan isn't allowed to go on loan to Ajax or they do not want him.''

07.43: Where do West Ham turn in their hour of need? Well, according to the Daily Telegraph they want to sign Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner, but have been prevented from making a bid by his £15 million price tag.

07.26: Chelsea have upped their bid for Benfica defender David Luiz to £21 million apparently. Not sure they will take less than £25 million, but we'll see. Read all about him here.

07.14: A round-up of what's in the papers for you:

The Sun: Bolton are set to seal the signing of David Wheater from Middlesbrough for around £2.5 million. Blackpool want to bring in Peterbrough's George Boyd as Charlie Adam's replacement. Barnsley winger Adam Hammill will join Wolves for £500k and get a £20k per week deal.

The Daily Mail: Blackburn want Argentine Mauro Formica from Newell's Old Boys and will snap him up for £3m. The midfielder was being linked to Galatasaray. Sunderland want Monaco striker Dieumerci Mbokani to replace Darren Bent and could get a cheap deal by landing him on loan. Fulham want to sign Man City winger Shaun Wright-Phillips on loan before the weekend. West Ham striker Benni McCarthy is holding talks with QPR over a possible move.

Daily Mirror: Arsenal want Chris Samba as their top transfer target this month. Chelsea are eyeing a deal for Stoke keeper Asmir Begovic, who would cost around £5m. QPR are interested in bringing in Wayne Routledge from Newcastle and Blackpool are keen to take Sunderland midfielder Jack Colback on loan.

07.10: First up, Marseille defender Taye Taiwo is being tracked by Spurs and Everton and would cost around £5 million.

07.00: Morning all, and it's a brand new day of transfer fun. Exciting day yesterday, but much of this morning is about players who aren't going anywhere. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is the first to admit he's finding it all a bit tough.

Ramos is ready to quit Real madrid,He could be perfect at Chelsea!!

Posted by peiyul11 on 01/19/2011

Good news Liverpool... Go get Sergio Ramos after his bust-up with Cristiano Ronaldo and try to get Taye Taiwo....

Posted by Fred on 01/19/2011

No matter which defender Arsene Wenger is buying, it definitely should be someone that can deal with the aerial threat so that Arsenal will stop conceding goals from set-pieces.

Posted by Red_John on 01/19/2011

Liverpool owners are getting on my nerves right now, i've got a feeling this is the same problem as the previous owners. They should know anybody in football can tell you that £20m for LUIS SUAREZ is not too much for a player of this calibre. This is beginning to look like a big farce. With just a few weeks left to transfer window my advise is, JUST SPENT THE MONEY, FOR THE SAKE OF THE CLUB

Posted by Markus Jefferson on 01/19/2011

Arsene Wenger needs to go for Sergio Ramos now. If he did have a problem at Mardid and does want to leave, then Wenger cant ignore a player of his quality

Posted by kurt bento on 01/19/2011

ummm. so. any idea if city plan to play another team in the championship or something? perhaps they should concentrate on building their academy instead of buying up everyone...

Posted by bruno on 01/19/2011

I dont think sergio ramos is needed in Manchester united, chelsea or arsenal. No doubt ramos is one great player but i think rafael and sagna is sufficient for the club. I think arsenal should stop looking for cheap deals and start looking for a world class defender. Wenger should be thinking of getting a defender good enough to pair up with vermaelen in the future. Personally i feel that neither Squallaci nor Koscielny has proven to be a good signing. Arsenal should not be stingy when it comes to getting a center back. They need to stop leaking goals if they are ever serious about challenging for major title. With the likes or RVP and chamakh upfront and nasri and frebegas in the mid, wenger dun even need to spend a single penny to bolster their attack. SO THROW THE MONEY ON THE DEFENCE PLEASEE!

Posted by Zack on 01/19/2011

If Liverpool have money to burn, and want to solve its fullback problems, why not sell Glen Johnson and put that money towards Sergio Ramos. I can't think of a more solid investment than that.

Posted by Critical Observer on 01/19/2011

@kurt bento:

Umm... Build their academy? Do you watch football? City has one of the best academies around.

Posted by karhian on 01/19/2011

watching all these transfer rumors unfold and not seeing Man Utd making a concrete bid for any good players to bolster their weak midfield is seriously a cause for concern.

I think man utd desperately needs to strengthen their midfield, particularly a strong defense midfielder and a tricky winger. i think man utd really do miss ronaldo.

i guess rooney was right all along, man utd does not really seem to be capable of improving and progressing, having to rely constantly on old guards to deliver the goods.

I can see Ramos going to Barcelona in a deal that involves dani alves going to city. Then they'll only be one short of having the entire Spanish first XI

Posted by L.A. Red on 01/19/2011

If Taye Taiwo is available for £5M, I would love to see Liverpool competing for his signature. He's physically and defensively stout, a decent passer, and has a cannon of a left foot. He'd be a big step forward from Konchesky or an out of position Glen Johnson.

Zack: Ramos is great going forward, but prone to defensive lapses. Sounds a lot like the right back we already have ...

Posted by Joel on 01/19/2011

Suarez signs for Liverpool..........

Posted by Prakash on 01/19/2011

It would be great for liverpool to get Sergio Ramos. He is good friends with Fernando Torres nd it would strengthen Liverpool's reputation so other world class players would want to move there

Posted by blade on 01/19/2011

@ CO:

They use to, but the complete lack of playing time for their academy players going forward thanks to the riches of the owners means there is a downward turn in their academy. just as there was in United's after their golden generation came up.

Posted by Chris North on 01/19/2011

Liverpool, Manyoo, Arsenal, the man you should all be chasing is Scott Parker!
In a terrible West Ham team he has shown he is a class above anyone.

Posted by Yemitino on 01/19/2011

Which Wenger should buy samba of bluackburn!!!!!!!

Posted by kato on 01/19/2011

chelsea should play attackin football, buy 2 wingers to move on the fluncks instead of using defensive midfielders as wingers and 2 defenders

Posted by Ash on 01/28/2011

Looks like Ipswich have missed out on Austin from Swindon. Myself and a number of fans are absolutely gutted.

Said to have offered him a pittance so it serves us right, but if you want to talk about ambition you have to back it up these days. Great shame.
