At a time when many are questioning whether Liverpool are fading, the likes of Joe Cole arriving at Anfield will encourage the likes of Gerrard, Torres and co to see the manager/club has intent to compete. However, Wenger is understood to be reluctant to allow Eduardo to leave the club.
08.35 BST: Here are the best bits from the newspapers in England on Monday morning:
The Sun reports Liverpool want a decision from Joe Cole this week after offering him £90,000 a week to move to Anfield. However, Tottenham and Arsenal remain in the hunt for the former Chelsea midfielder. The Cole link is in most of the morning’s papers.
However, the Daily Mirror report that Harry Redknapp is instead fluttering his eyelids at Manchester City forward Craig Bellamy and hopes he can sign the Welshman in a £3 million deal, now that City have signed David Silva. Wigan are trailing Chelsea’s Franco Di Santo, while prolific rumour-mongerer Alan Nixon also brings us the news that Wolfsburg are looking at Chelsea defender Jeffrey Bruma on loan.
Over at the The Guardian, Redknapp is looking to sign a fourth Croatian to join Vedran Corluka, Luka Modric and Niko Kranjcar, with the Spurs boss admitting there is “every chance” he will sign Spartak Moscow’s Stipe Pletikosa.
The Daily Mail, meanwhile, carry the story that Eduardo could be joining Shakhtar Donetsk for £6 million in a story that is a rehash of that which emerged in Croatia on Sunday. The paper reports that Shakhtar are also considering Benfica striker Oscar Cardozo and Ajax’s Luis Suarez. Meanwhile, Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar is reported to be a target for new Inter manager Rafa Benitez.
Richard Dunne is apparently the lead protagonist in Aston Villa’s attempt to sign Robbie Keane, according to the Daily Express, with the defender “urging” Martin O’Neill to sign his Republic of Ireland team-mate. The same paper claims Sol Campbell will shun interest from Arsenal, Sunderland and Celtic to sign for Newcastle United this summer.
Finally, the Daily Star claims Arsenal will offer as much as £18 million to sign Everton defender Phil Jagielka. Given how much Manchester City paid to sign the inferior Joleon Lescott last summer, that sounds like decent business to us.
08.16 BST: We also have some breaking news this morning with West Brom confirming that Scottish midfielder Graham Dorrans has signed a new contract at the Hawthorns. West Ham made an offer for Dorrans earlier in the summer.
08.14 BST: A couple of things to look out for today... Francis Jeffers, he of the 100% strike rate for England, is on trial at Blackpool and could be returning to the Premier League. Also a current Arsenal striker in Eduardo is believed to be on the bring on joining Shakhtar Donetsk. We will run through the papers in a minute.
