23:54: Well that's all folks! No more transfer news tonight. Join us again tomorrow though, for all the news and speculation about who is going where this January.

23.32 Portsmouth manager Avram Grant is eager to re-sign Jamie O'Hara on loan from Tottenham and keep hold of his star players after the Premier League lifted a transfer embargo on the south coast club.

23.21: It looks as though West Ham may well make two signings on Wednesday with Benni McCarthy agreeing a move to Upton Park and Eidur Gudjohnsen arriving for a medical. More on that story here.

22.54: The early editions of tomorrow's papers are bringing forth a new wave of transfer rumours and the Daily Mail claims Sunderland have reignited their interest in Liverpool forward Ryan Babel.

22.46: It is now being reported that Eidur Gudjohnsen has undergone a medical at West Ham although Spurs have also shown an interest in the player. Expect movement on that potential deal on Wednesday.

21.26 Reports suggest that Bolton Wanderers are set to win the chase to sign Arsenal starlet Jack Wilshere on loan - ahead of West Ham and Burnley.

20.58 Manchester United and Wigan Athletic will do battle in the race to sign Atletico Madrid's 19-year-old goalkeeper David De Gea.

20.15 Gianfranco Zola is close to finalising a deal to take his former strike partner Eidur Gudjohnsen to West Ham United, according to The Guardian.

19.51 It looks like Arsenal will have competition to sign Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. AC Milan are ready to do a swap deal with Roma for Julio Baptista, according to reports in Italy.

19.05 It's clear that West Ham target Benni McCarthy won't be returning to Ewood Park after Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce bid a furious farewell to the striker. "What he's done is unprofessional," Sam said. "It shows you that the only loyalty a player has got is to himself."

18.30 It could be a case of one in and one out Zaragoza with Brazilian striker Ewerthon linked with a move to Real Betis.

18.06 Serie A club Napoli have confirmed defender Matteo Contini is set to join Spanish side Real Zaragoza. Sporting director Riccardo Bigon told Radio Marte: "Contini is very close to Zaragoza and the negotiations should be concluded by tomorrow."

17.36: Blackburn have been linked with Turkey international Yildiray Basturk from Stuttgart, Stoke's James Beattie and Eidur Gudjohnsen, once a player with Allardyce at Bolton and now at Monaco. Sam Allardyce has hinted at interest them, saying:

"If those players are available we may start negotiations but the first thing would be to contact the club."

17.26: Arsene Wenger says Jack Wilshere's future will be decided this week as the club investigates the possibility of a loan move.

"We have interest from Premier League teams. It will be decided today or tomorrow. Burnley is an opportunity. At the end of the day, Wilshere will have his word to say, because he needs to decide where he likes to go."

17.25: West Ham co-owner David Sullivan has told the London Evening Standard that defender Matthew Upson will be sold in the summer if he does not agree a new contract.

"He will not be sold now. In the summer he will have 12 months to go on his contract. If he wanted to play Champions League or European football you couldn't stand in his way. So unless Matthew wants to sign a new deal he will have to be sold next summer. Nobody else has to go. The squad is thin and in the summer we will be looking to discover the next Ronaldo."

17.09: Sky Sports News claims Arsenal have now also had a bid accepted for Chris Smalling.

17.08: BREAKING NEWS It's understood that West Ham have agreed a fee with Blackburn for Benni McCarthy, but there are a couple of issues still to be ironed out between the clubs.

17.02: Slight update on Smalling - Fulham say he has yet to complete a medical and agree final terms, but basically he is joining United in the summer.

16.58: Lazio have blocked Argentine midfielder Cristian Ledesma's bid to free himself from his contract, the Rome club's lawyer said on Tuesday. Inter Milan are known admirers.

16.50: Bolton Wanderers have completed the signing of Stuart Holden, subject to international clearance. More here.

16.28: German newspaper Bild claims Manchester United winger Zoran Tosic is joining Cologne on a six-month loan deal.

16.20: Inter outcast Mancini says he turned down a move to Marseille because they said nothing for two weeks and then demanded an instant answer as to whether he was willing to join. "I have a newly-born daughter so I'm not just going to make decisions on my future on a whim," he said in L'Equipe.

16.10: Tony Mowbray is willing to allow Stephen McManus and Danny Fox to leave Celtic - but insists his decision has nothing to do with their ability. Middlesbrough are reportedly interested in taking the Hoops' club captain on loan while Burnley boss Brian Laws is looking to buy former Coventry left-back Fox.

15.50: BREAKING NEWS Fulham defender Chris Smalling has agreed terms with Manchester United and will join the club in the summer.

15.36: BREAKING NEWS Birmingham have confirmed the signing of Craig Gardner from Aston Villa for £3 million on a four-and-a-half-year deal. More here.

15.33: Steve Bruce hopes the Kenwyne Jones to Liverpool story is "gone to bed and put away". He thinks the whole thing has been led by agents.

15.23: Birmingham boss Alex McLeish admits he is targeting a striker and wide midfield player before the transfer window closes. Ryan Babel and Roman Pavlyuchenko are known targets and McLeish said:

"Are any other deals close to being completed? There is nothing close but we are trying a couple of things. I still believe we have to spend some more money to bring in a striker and a wide man for more cover in the squad before the window closes."

15.18: Carlo Ancelotti insists in-form striker Nicolas Anelka is staying at Stamford Bridge after following speculation that talks over a new contract had stalled. Ancelotti said:

"It's the same question with Joe Cole. We want to keep him and he wants to stay. There will be a resolution. Anelka has told me he wants to stay. He's happy with me. He's happy to work with me, and I'm very happy to work with him. That's a wedding, no? We don't want to break up."

15.05: Sam Allardyce has confirmed Benni McCarthy is AWOL. He says the striker has been wrongly advised and that he won't be sold unless the move is "right for Blackburn Football Club". West Ham look set to buy him, but Sam says there's yet to be an acceptable offer.

15.00: The next exclusive: West Ham have made a bid for Benjani, but Manchester City are reluctant to part with the striker given the impending departure of Robinho. A source close to Benjani told Soccernet:

"Benjani has only six months left to run on his contract, so it would make sense to sell him now. West Ham urgently need a striker, and Benjani wants to go to West Ham. But City are thinking about it, and don’t seem too keen to sell all of a sudden.

“The problem is that City are talking now about releasing Robinho on loan and need players as cover. Benjani was nowhere near the squad only a month ago, but suddenly Roberto Mancini has been using him regularly.”

14.55: Exclusives all around. Manchester United and Wigan want Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David De Gea (more here) while Real Madrid and several Premier League clubs want Sevilla's Diego Perotti (more here). Another exclusive coming up any minute.

14.49: Genoa striker Hernan Crespo will not be leaving the club, despite interest from England according to his agent Fernando Hidalgo.

14.19: Cristian Ledesma will remain a Lazio player until the end of the season after the Lega Calcio's arbitration panel threw out his case against the club due to inadmissible evidence.

13.56: Real Madrid general manager Jorge Valdano insists the club are not interested in taking England striker Wayne Rooney to the Bernabeu. Not that he'd want to join ' that mob' anyway... imagine the look on Fergie's face.

13.52: Portsmouth are now able to buy players again. Find out more here.

13.25: Robinho could be off to Santos or Sao Paolo. Roberto Mancini explains why:

"The World Cup in June is a big problem for him. He wants to play for the national team. I understand that but I must decide what is best for the team. I have five or six strikers to choose from, which makes it difficult for him and me."

13.15: Wayne Routledge has apparently completed his move from QPR to Newcastle on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

13.03: The rumour doing the rounds is that United are set to allow Fulham to keep Chris Smalling on loan until the end of the season. The other rumour is that that's now a done deal.

12.52: Arsene Wenger has confirmed he would still like to sign Fulham defender Chris Smalling despite reports Manchester United have had a bid accepted.

12.47: Newcastle want Everton striker James Vaughan on loan. Boss Chris Hughton said in the Shields Gazette:

"James Vaughan is a player we're aware of, and one we're interested in, but I don't know if that one will happen."

Derby are also interested.

12.41: On-loan Burnley striker Frederic Nimani today received international clearance and could make his debut against Bolton tonight.

12.38: BREAKING NEWS Roberto Mancini has confirmed Manchester City are in talks with both Santos and Sao Paolo over a loan move for Robinho.

12.37: West Brom boss Roberto Di Matteo expects to keep Robert Koren at the club after the Slovenia midfielder won his place in the side back.

12.35: Mick McCarthy has brought in a couple of new players already, but he's not done yet. Reports suggest Wolves are still tracking Hull midfielder Stephen Hunt and a striker is still thought to be on the agena. McCarthy said in the Express & Star:

“I’ve no doubt we’ll be here to midnight on Monday. It’s the usual scenario. We’ve been working at it since the day we walked back in here on July 1 - whether that be to sign players or in training how to get goals and nothing has changed. But we can’t force people to come or to let players go.”

12.25: Stoke have confirmed that midfielder Tom Soares will remain on loan to Championship side Sheffield Wednesday until the end of the season.

12.07: Roma defender Cicinho is unlikely to leave for Sao Paulo as his agent Riccardo Sarti claims he has pulled out of a deal to go back to Brazil.

11.42: Former Dutch international Roy Makaay appears to be on his way out of Eredivisie giants Feyenoord, with beleaguered Bundesliga side Hannover having shown an interest in signing the prolific striker.

11.25: Nottingham Forest are in talks with Aston Villa about extending Nicky Shorey's loan spell at the Championship promotion chasers.

11.23: Sampdoria Luigi Del Neri is set to drop Antonio Cassano once again as talk of a move to Man City intensifies.

11.09: Celtic have confirmed the signing of Morten Rasmussen on a three-and-a-half year deal. Svend Frandsen has the lowdown with everything you need to know about the striker...

10.50: BREAKING NEWS Manchester United have had a bid accepted for Fulham defender Chris Smalling, according to Sky Sports News. Arsenal are also thought to be interested.

10.25: Birmingham boss Alex McLeish is confident Aston Villa midfielder Craig Gardner will finally complete his move to St Andrew's later today. The Blues have agreed a fee of around £3.5million for the England Under-21 player, who has also passed a medical.

10.23: Marco Ruben has agreed to join Wigan, according to his Spanish club
Villarreal. According to reports, Ruben could cost Wigan up to £7million, and he will sign a four-and-a-half-year contract upon arriving in the UK.

10.17: Another exclusive from Harry Harris - find out which two clubs are battling it out for Eidur Gudjohnsen here.

10.03: Going back to Forest, Davies has also said the club are still interested in Crystal Palace starlet Victor Moses, who's also been linked with Arsenal, Liverpool and Real Madrid.

09.45: Exclusive scoop from scoopmeister Harry Harris: Pompey boss Avram Grant has two players lined up in the hope the Premier League lift the transfer embargo on Tuesday. Egyptian World Cup striker Emad Moteab is on Grant’s list and a loan
deal is set up with his club, Al Ahly, and could go through early next week. Grant also wants to bring back Tottenham’s Jamie O’Hara on loan.

09.35: Nottingham Forest boss Billy Davies has confirmed he wants to sign loanees Nicky Shorey and Radoslaw Majewski on permanent deals. Shorey is due to return to Villa on Thursday.

09.34: BREAKING NEWS Giovani Dos Santos looks set to join Galatasaray on loan until the end of the season. What is it with Galatasaray at the moment? They're trying to sign everyone.

09.25: PSV Eindhoven will seek compensation should sacked striker Jonathan Reis sign with another club. The 20-year-old Brazilian left PSV yesterday after the club claimed he had tested positive for a banned substance and refused to seek help on the matter.

08:40: Celtic are set to complete the £1 million signing of Danish forward Morten Rasmussen today once the player completes his medical at Parkhead.

08:37: Spanish daily AS reckon that Spartak Moscow winger Quincy Owusu-Abeyie has caught the eye of La Liga side Malaga.

08:03: Marouane Chamakh is believed to favour a move to Liverpool, though reports that a four-year deal has already being signed are premature according to L'Equipe.

07:10: Good morning all and welcome to the beginning of another day in the January transfer window. We're full of hope and optimistic that a big signing will be on its way today, and it could well be Robinho's return to Brazil with Santos. First things first, though, let's have a sweep around the newspapers fort the best of today's speculation and gossip:

Daily Mail: Robinho is set to tak an £80,000 pay cut to join Santos - and who said all he cared about was money? Man City could be given the first option on Santos’s rising stars Neymar and Paulo Henrique Ganso as part of the deal... Hull are in line to bring Mido to the KC Stadium to join international team-mate Amr Zaki. Is one moody Egyptian striker not enough for Phil Brown? Middlesbrough closing in on QPR's £1.75 million winger Wayne Routledge.

I really hope that Benitez does go to Juventus and that he takes Lucas with him..

Posted by trevor griffiths on 01/27/2010

As a long term arsenal fan we all need to know whether the reports on klaas joining arsenal are true, as wenger has said he is not in for a striker? Is wenger deluded in his thoughts ,we only have 2 strikers and wenger wants win the title ,{he is nuts!}

Posted by Brighton on 01/28/2010

I hope Benjani moves to West Ham and that coach Zola will make use of him on the right side of the midfield where he is more effective. He is such a good player whose potential is limited by being played as a lone striker sometimes.
