On The Move
Posted by John Brewin on 08/16/2009

What with there actually being football to play this weekend the transfer market has taken a back-seat, but that doesn't mean there's been a lack of rumours.

Here's a selection of the best and our view on them:

Sol Campbell to Newcastle: Campbell is out of contract and is available on a free deal. His arrival would free up Steven Taylor to be the latest Toon man to be sold. Everton and Villa are said to want Taylor and both look like they need him.

Verdict: Sol could certainly do a job, meaning we think this rumour definitely has some legs and adds up.

Sven goes galactico: Or should that be geriatrico? Eriksson has been linked with a move to persuade both Luis Figo and Pavel Nedved to come out of retirement. He also wants Patrick Vieira, according to the Mail on Sunday.

Verdict: Can't see this one. Very odd. Almost strange enough to be true but surely pie in the sky.

Andriy Voronin to Hertha Berlin: The Ukraine striker spent a loan period in the German capital and they're prepared to pay £3m for him.

Verdict: Judging by his cameo against Spurs, penalty or no penalty, most Liverpool fans would walk him there. Though Liverpool's problem is lacking bodies to play up front. Maybe it's the hairstyle.

Matthew Upson to be sold by West Ham: Several stories suggest West Ham need to sell. Even to the point where Gianfranco Zola is threatening to walk out of Upton Park.

Verdict: If Manchester City do not get Lescott - we think they will - then Upson is next best, though older, and is ahead of Lescott in the England reckoning. Villa might fancy him too.

Ryan Shawcross to Manchester United: Reports suggest that Sir Alex Ferguson may go back in for a player he sold to Stoke last summer. Liverpool also in for him and it could be a battle.

Verdict: Seems unlikely as Ferguson usually employs the adage of "never go back". However, judging by the injuries to his defenders this looks a viable option as Shawcross is used to playing alongside Jonny Evans.
