It's ok, Rafa Benitez has defended spending £17.5m on a right-back that cost £4m two years ago.
"Sometimes you have to spend a little bit more,'' said Benitez. "You can't compete in the top four of the Premier League unless you spend some money.'' Yeah Rafa, but not on Glen Johnson. Spend a bit more on David Villa or David Silva and really improve your team...
Portsmouth can rest easy though, because Tony, sorry Paul, Hart is drawing up his plans to bring in new players - cross your fingers, Pompey fans, that it doesn't involve the words Jermaine or Pennant. But striker Peter Crouch has no plans to leave Fratton Park this summer, according to the England international striker's agent, so that's a relief.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid are still sniffing around Xabi Alonso even though he's not for sale. With Barcelona after Javier Mascherano and Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka already on their way to the Bernabeu, we're starting to wonder if La Liga is the place to be after all.
Man City have followed up their capture of Gareth Barry and Roque Santa Cruz with another star name: Oh wait, it's Stuart Taylor. The Ian Walker lookalike spent far too long sitting on the bench at Arsenal and Aston Villa, but has decided that the bench at Eastlands looks far more comfortable. The new owners have probably installed some lovely new seat warmers, so he'll be quite happy while Shay Given gets all the first-team action.
Elsewhere at City, Gelson Fernandes is a target for Ligue 1 side Lens according to reports in France, while Patrick Vieira could be set for a move back to England, if he doesn't join French giants Paris Saint Germain.
Bolton are trying to sign some new players, and Paul Robinson of West Brom is one such man. The defender's move is stalling as they can't agree on the fee and, more importantly, he's a bit more interested in joining Celtic.
Shunsuke Nakamura is set to leave the Hoops but isn't going back to Japan as everyone expected. Instead, he's off to Spain to join Espanyol.
Juventus have parted company with former Villa defender Olof Mellberg and he's popped off to sign a three-year deal with Greek giants Olympiakos; while the funniest news of the day is surely that Arsene Wenger think that Nicklas Bendtner can ''scare any defence''. Presumably because he's got his trousers round his ankles...
And finally, we can bring you the news that one of the summer's long transfer sagas has come to an end. David Villa won't be signing for Real Madrid as the club have decided to stop spending crazy money on anyone (although Franck Ribery might still be a possibility) and are quite happy to look elsewhere for their new striker.
Real Madrid general director Jorge Valdano said: "The situation with Villa is 100% finished.'' Except Barcelona, Man City, Liverpool and whoever else has some spare cash lying around will be in for him before the sun has set.

Re: Liverpool improving the team
Certainly Silva or Villa would be top shelf reinforcements for the runners up, but Glen Johnson is also a top shelf option going forward and making deliveries to the front line. This - and depth - has been a glaring weakness for the Reds. The fee might seem high, but not when Rafa is settled on a player for his system.
But they should keep Arbeloa.

the move with christiano ronaldo going to Madrid is one of their best moves in a while and he will add some mew dimensions to their style of play. Also kaka will be another to player to fear after having him signed. I look for Madrid to be the next la liga champs

17 million is a very reasonable price for Johnson, although I admit my bias as a Liverpool supporter. Glen was voted the best right back in the league with his inclusion in the Premier League's team of the year, and costs the same as Bosingwa, roughly, and 12 million less than ferdinand. he's good defensively, and creative offensively (scored bbc's goal of the year). A great pick up for liverpool, who even though people say they need an attacker (most goals in the league by nine!) need to shore up the weak spots in their back line. Now all that is needed is a 10-20 million pound attacker, Villa wouldn't fit, but a Negredo or Lavezzi could just be perfect.

Liverpool should try to sign David Villa or David Silva rather than investing such a huge amount of money for Glen Johnson.Liverpool needs a supporting striker badly.Last time the signing of Robbie Keane turned out to be a foolhardy venture. At the end of the season Livepool had to experiment with David Ngog who really disappointed all the supporters. So,why to invest so much to strengthen the defence?

to aidil, don't blame Aurelio has he has been saving Liverpool with his marvelous freekick (against MU), not to mention several important goals he had score. Well, just keep them and I do think that Insua should be given more first team action as he had the quality to be near best to Evra.

to all liverpool fans...what do you think about these 3 players f.aurellio,d.kuyt n ngog?to me they are the dissapointment of liverpool when it comes to football. i kinda appriciate kuyt cos he saved liverpool with crucial goals.bt i still have this doubt that his presence does not bring any effect to the team most of the time.about fabio n ngog,i hope u guys are with me that they are not effective at all to the team.if u guys dont believe me,pls review the games they have caps for liverpool.i hope rafa get rid of them, for the team sake.we cant afford to have such players if we want to be a champion.cos opponents love that.thank u..
-a concern liverpool fan..-

I think liverpool shud get a midfielder as well we can dominate like gerard/alonso, eg. the two brazilians ramires and the defencesive midfielder playing alongside the ex-arsenal player in the confideration cup. The reason is for us not to have excuses if somebody is injured. the striker department: torres factor will frustrate the one who will be bought cause if fit he played everytime whether playing well or not. i observe that during the time of crouch. i miss crouch as he gave us other dimension when torres is closed down or off without the scorring boots.

although we do need to strengethen in attack, we did score the most in the league so perhaps signing a good quality british fullback was a great signing. dossena, ngog and lucas shud go especially lucas he is absolutley hopeless. gareth barry wuda been a perfect replacement but city snared him. aurelio is a decent player and so is kuyt how can any one doubt kuyt. we must hold on to mascherano and alonso nd i also think we keep arbeloa. we need to sign another striker and a player that can perform well on both the left nd the right wing and we wil be close to winning the championship

Johnson is a good buy for that money. He was rated the best right-back for last season and he's English. Arbeloa's down to his last year of contract, and if he doesn't extend, he should be sold. He was okay but inconsistent. Rate Johnson higher. Agree that we do need cover up front. Such a pity that Mascherano and even Alonso could be on their way out. If they go, we need midfield cover as well. Kuyt has his strengths and contributions, and don't write off Lucas just yet. Trust Rafa to know what's best for 'Pool

liverpool did at least bought glen johnson, give him sum times and he will gel with the team. the kops needs some reinforcement like buying villa, silva, gareth bale, tom hudderstone r aaron lennon to give pace and finishing.
we must sell kuyt, arbeloa, dossena, aurelio to generate funds.
we must also hope that our owner provide execellent funds too.
we must keeps alonso, babel, gerard n torres. they are our most important players in the team if we want to win the league.

rafael knows best for the team.obviously if we cant get silva nor lennon, we shld try getting ashley young, great player on the left plus an englishman as well.Babel is good player with lightning pace, giv him more chances in 1st team, he will shine.M.Owen is an option as back up striker provided he dunt get spend too much time on injury.likewise he had his best years in soccer during his stint with liverpool, who knows, he might shine again n scoring great goals.for sure he's value for free now.
