So, it's finally happened. Carlos Tevez has rejected Manchester United and will now begin looking for a new club.
It's a curious and frustrating turn of events for United fans given that the club actually offered to pay the £22.5m Tevez's people wanted and offered to make Tevez one of the highest paid players at Old Trafford.
His advisor/ agent/ friend/ puppetmaster Kia Joorabchian said Tevez decided to leave because United took so long to make the offer. In short the Argentine didn't feel wanted and so is leaving with his bottom lip sticking out.
Could it be that he's leaving because the deal would have made him United's player, therefore no longer the property/ golden goose of the businessmen that Joorabchian represents and the people who made £5m-a-season from the two-year loan deal that saw the 25-year-old at Old Trafford? Who knows?
The question is: Where will Tevez end up next season? Joorabchian says the striker has ruled out a move to Liverpool out of respect to United and their fans, but that Chelsea and Manchester City have made their interest clear.
Based on the respect argument you'd have to assume that Chelsea are favourites given the City-United rivalry, but money talks and both clubs have more than enough.
For United it is the second blow of the summer after losing Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid for £80m - though, that deal has not yet been finalised.
Without Tevez or Ronaldo United are two match-winners down and will be looking to add to their depleted forward line. One player often linked to the club and who could fit the bill is Lyon's Karim Benzema.
On Saturday the chances of a move appeared to improve when Lyon director Bernard Lacombe said that: "'If Manchester United, who we all know have come into a lot of money, present an offer for Benzema, what can you do?"
Cash-in appears to be the obvious answer.
Elsewhere, Brazilian Maicon has issued what amounts to 'come and get me' plea after questioning Inter Milan's ambition.
While on duty at the Confederations Cup Maicon said he wants to win the Champions League and Inter have yet to show the same ambition, adding that until they do he'll consider his options.
