On The Move
Posted by Dom Raynor on 02/02/2009

The transfer window is now closed and only deals that can show the dire weather here in the UK prevented them from being completed before 17.00 GMT will now go through. Even then the FA must have received email confirmation from the two clubs involved before the deadline.

Click here for all the transfer deadline day deals.

17.30: The final word on Andrei Arshavin's on-off-on-off-on-off-on transfer from Zenit St Petersburg to Arsenal is that it is off. The Associated Press report the deal broke down over the size of the transfer fee and the amount of compensation Zenit would be paid for allowing the Russian to break his four-year contract. "The deal didn't happen. Arshavin is coming back to Zenit," a spokesman said.

17.20: Robbie Keane has completed his return to Tottenham Hotspur from Liverpool, bringing an end to his short but troubled time at Anfield. The Republic of Ireland striker, who left White Hart Lane in a £20m deal in the summer, said: "It proved not to be the right move for me .... I shall be giving my all for this club."

17.15: The first of the late deals is in. West Bromwich Albion have announced the signing of 24-year-old Argentine winger Juan Carlos Menseguez from San Lorenzo on loan until the end of the season with a view to a permanent move.

17.00 The window is now shut and only deals that can show the dire weather here in the UK prevented them from being completed will go through... along with a few stragglers that have been finalised but not announced to the press.

16.52: Well with eight minutes to go the Roque Santa Cruz deal is dead. It has been very quiet on that particular transfer today and with no time left to find a replacement Blackburn Rovers are unwilling to sell the striker to Manchester City.

"The Portuguese press is now reporting that Quaresma is heading to Chelsea on loan," says Soccernet reader JBCP3431.

16.43: And it seems like it is true. There are multiple reports claiming that Chelsea are attempting to hijack Tottenham's bid to sign Ricardo Quaresma from Inter Milan. That would obviously mean the end of any swap deal involving David Bentley or Jermaine Jenas.

16.37: Manchester City have rejected an £8m bid from Newcastle United for midfielder Michael Johnson. The England U21 international was a revelation at Eastland's under Sven Goran Eriksson last season but has failed to find the same form under new manager Mark Hughes and was tipped to head to the North East.

16.32: West Bromwich Albion have completed the signing of Paris Saint Germain defensive midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu on loan until the end of the season. The 22-year-old, capped at U21 level with France, is a Democratic Republic of Congo international.

16.28: More on Andrei Arshavin's protracted transfer from Zenit St Petersburg to Arsenal... the Russian playmaker has passed a medical and agreed terms, the two clubs have even agreed a fee and the only sticking point remains how much Arshavin will pay Zenit as a percentage of his signing fee for leaving the club. Apparently he will wear the No.13 at Arsenal.

GuySmylie says: "As a Chelsea fan it's a real shame to see these moves as our team sits by injuried and does nothing. Losing Cole and Essien would kill any team and having Drogba out of favor by the coach doesn't help. There's not a single striker we could get on the cheap or on a loan?"

16.18: Hertha Berlin striker Marko Pantelic has denied he is set to join Fulham. The 30-year-old Serbian international, who is out of contract with the Bundesliga side in the summer, said: "That [report] is complete rubbish."

16.05: Fulham have signed Olivier Dacourt on loan from Inter Milan for the rest of the season. The Frenchman is a replacement for Jimmy Bullard, who joined Hull City earlier in the transfer window.

15.54: Liverpool have confirmed that they have agreed a deal with Tottenham Hotspur to take Robbie Keane back to White Hart Lane. The fee is believed to be around £15m and Keane will become the third player to rejoin Spurs in the transfer window, after Pascal Chimbonda and Jermain Defoe. A Liverpool spokesman said: "Liverpool Football Club have reached agreement with Tottenham Hotspur for the sale of Robbie Keane."

Soccernet reader Augustine says: "Wow. Yet another ex-Tottenham player returning and Spurs have got five strikers now? Shouldn't they be boosting their defence instead?"

15.51: Giovani dos Santos £7m transfer from Tottenham Hotspur to Portsmouth has fallen through because the Mexican youngster is not match fit. Earlier reports suggested an unidentified second party were also interested in signing the former Barcelona starlet.

15.35: Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has confirmed that Newcastle United winger Charles N'Zogbia has completed his medical at the JJB Stadium and has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal. Ryan Taylor will be heading to Newcastle United as part of the deal and has signed a three-year-deal at St James' Park. Whelan also confirmed that Wigan have rejected a bid for Antonio Valencia from Real Madrid.

15.12: The on-off-on-off-on-off transfer of Andrei Arshavin from Zenit St Petesburg to Arsenal is back on and "very close" to conclusion, according to Sky Sports. There is plenty of time for the £15m-ish deal to be off and back on again before the transfer window closes.

15.09: Newcastle United have failed in a bid to swap £10m Obafemi Martins for Tottenham Hotspur's £16.5m striker Darren Bent. It was a no-brainer really.

"I would pick Martins over D.Bent anytime...", says mOstwanted.

14.47: West Ham United defender Calum Davenport is in Sunderland for a medical, ending Birmingham City's hopes of signing in the centre-back. The Hammers have also confirmed that they don't expect any new players to arrive at Upton Park before the transfer window slams shut.

14.38: Everton have completed their first deal of the transer window, signing Manchester City misfit Jo on loan until the end of the season. The 21-year-old forward has struggled to get first team football since his £18m move to City and the Toffees have no fit strikers at the present time.

"Jo too Everton confirmed, what happened to Jo, did his big skinny lanky legs freeze in the cold? Maybe he could go and borrow Kanu or Crouch's socks. He is a great player though no doubt" - says Soccernet reader Daniel Gray

14.27: Wigan have confirmed that striker Henri Camara has joined Stoke City on loan for the remainder of the season. "I want to say a really big thank you to the Wigan fans," Camara said. "But when I was given this chance I felt I had to take it for the sake of my career."

14.24: Good news for all you transfer junkies; the Premier League will allow clubs to go past the transfer deadline but they must receive email confirmation from both parties before 5pm and the clubs must show that the deal was done and the weather was to blame for not finalising the formalities.

14.12: Seems I spoke to soon about Roque Santa Cruz, but it is not good news for Manchester City fans. It seems that the Eastlands club are not willing to stump up the £25m asking price and the Paraguay striker looks set to stay at Blackburn Rovers.

13.50: What on earth has happened to the Roque Santa Cruz deal? Not a peep from Manchester City or Blackburn Rovers.

13.44: Tottenham Hotspur have accepted two transfer bids of £7m for former Barcelona forward Giovani Dos Santos. Portsmouth have already given the Mexican a medical, but have some reservations over the youngster's fitness, and the identity of the second interested party is not yet known.

13.29: Liverpool have confirmed that Robbie Keane is holding talks with Tottenham Hotspur about a return to White Hart Lane. A £15m fee is reported to have been agreed and a medical is underway, although Liverpool insist no deal has been finalised. "We've allowed Robbie to talk to Spurs but we've not yet finalised a deal with them for the player," a spokesman said.

"Rafa must be joking and will not be winning anything again this time round because of his inability to mould good players into great players. He just cannot expect Keane to work wonders in 6 months and yet he does not even get enough games." - Elijah from Kenya.

"Where were Liverpool in the standings when Keane was a regular? Since he has been unsettled in the team and left out of the squad Liverpool have slowly dropped down the table and will continue to. They even stayed top while Torres was njury pleagued the first half of the season. Number of goals is not everything. Not only does Keane take pressure off of Torres, he frees up room for Kuyt to push forward down the right, and Gerrard in support. It always takes time for players to settle. Especially strikers. He was with Spurs for so long that it could take a year to become completely confident in the new system and players. A longer grace period should have been given and more support. Benitez's grace period has long passes, and is still is a bum. Benitez is the one Liverpool should be offloading this transfer window." - Brad.

13.25: Reports are surfacing that the Andrei Arshavin deal is not dead and the Zenit St Petersburg playmaker has been seen having a medical at Arsenal. Although contradicting reports coming out of Russia say that the Gunners simply aren't willing to pay the £15m asking price.

"Reports that Arshavin is actually having a medical at the moment? Who knows whats going on," says Soccernet reader Trhemp.

13.08: David Bentley and Jermaine Jenas have become possible makeweights in a deal to bring Inter Milan's Ricardo Quaresma to Tottenham. The Golden Bin winner has been axed from Inter's Champions League squad and manager Jose Mourinho said: "I do not have space for him".

12.59: Liverpool have sent a couple of youngsters out on loan. Hungarian Under 21 International goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi has joined League One Hereford United until the end of the season and midfielder Adam Hammill has joined Championship side Barnsley.

12.45: Portsmouth have confirmed the signing of Greece captain Angelos Basinas from AEK Athens on an 18-month loan deal. "He is exactly what we need," said Portsmouth chairman Peter Storrie.

12.43: West Bromwich Albion are set to sign San Lorenzo winger Juan Carlos Menseguez on loan, according to the Birmingham Mail. The 24-year-old Argentine is currently undergoing a medical and the Baggies hope to make the deal permanent at the end of the season.

12.26: Fulham have sent midfielder Leon Andreasen on loan to German club Hannover 96 until the end of the season and, as reported earlier, Inter Milan's Oliver Dacourt is at Craven Cottage thrashing out a transfer deal.

12.19: Manchester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel is hoping to go out on loan to get some first team football following the arrival of Shay Given at Eastlands. The 22-year-old's agent, Michael Johansen, said: "The top priority is to find a club where Kasper will be allowed to play for the rest of the season."

12.13: Chelsea look set to seal two loan deals, but unfortunately for Blues fans the players are going out, not coming in. Scott Sinclair will extend his loan deal at Birmingham City, while Sergio Tejera is heading to Real Mallorca.

12.00: Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate has admitted defeat in his attempt to sign Reading midfielder James Harper. Boro were willing to offer £3m but Arsenal would receive 40 per cent of any fee for their former trainee leaving Reading with just over £1.5million. "There are quite a few complications with the deal, so I would think that it’s unlikely," Southgate told the Reading Evening Post.

11.54: Apparently, 37-year-old Henrik Larsson has been linked with a return to the Premier League with either Bolton Wanderers or West Ham United but his agent has ruled out a move."Premier League clubs are interested in Henrik, but we are going to negotiate a new contract with Helsingborg," Rob Jansen said.

11.43: Everton are set to complete the signing of Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Seamus Coleman after the Sligo Rovers defender underwent a medical at the club. Personal terms are currently being discussed.

11.32: The Premier League, the FA and FIFA are holding talks regarding the possibility of extending the transfer window past 5pm, due to the havoc the weather is causing here in the UK. Bad news for this reporter.

11.26: Stoke City are poised to sign Wigan Athletic striker Henri Camara on loan until the end of the season, according to the Stoke Sentinel. The 31-year-old Senegal international was a target in the previous transfer window. Meanwhile, Potters defender Andrew Davies will go on loan to Norwich City.

11.15: Newcastle United have made an £8m bid for Manchester City midfielder Michael Johnson. The England U21 international was a revelation at Eastland's under Sven Goran Eriksson but has failed to find the same form under new manager Mark Hughes and is believed to be receptive to the idea of a move to the North East.

11.05: Manchester City forward Jo has arrived at Everton's training ground to put the finishing touches to his loan move. The £24million striker needs first team football and the Toffees have no fit strikers at the present time.

11.00 Pompey are set to snap up Greece captain Angelos Basinas from Mallorca, report the Portsmouth News. The 33-year-old Euro 2004 winner has been a long term target for the club.

10.39: Robbie Keane is making his way through the snow to London to undergo a medical after Tottenham agreed a £15m fee with Liverpool for the striker. The Daily Mail also claim the Republic of Ireland international must agree personal terms to complete his return to White Hart Lane.

Soccernet reader lavendertotti is baffled by this move: "Keane back to Spurs for £15m and Saviola to L'pool? No kidding. R. Keane deosn't want to play in Championship, does he? He just need more time to get together with Torres to play at the front. The one who should go is definitely Rafa Benitez. Cannot imagine what will happen if Lampard was not sent off. Is Saviola better than Keane? I doubt it."

10.29: Bolton Wanderers will spend the cash generated by Kevin Nolan's sale to Newcastle United to buy Lyon striker Fred for £4.5m, according to Le Parisien. The Brazilian forward has been trying to leave for a couple of months and after Tottenham pulled out of deal last week it looked like he would have to stay in France.

10.15: Manchester United youngster James Chester has joined Peterborough on a month's loan. The centre-back played in the Carling Cup semi-final last month and it seems that Sir Alex Ferguson is eager for his starlet to get some first team experience at his son's club.

10.00: El Mundo Deportivo report that Real Madrid have agreed to give Javier Saviola a free transfer to allow him to move to his preferred destination at the end of the season and the Daily Mail says that destination is Liverpool. The Reds are negotiating a loan deal until the end of the current campaign with a view to a permanent switch.

9.50: Zenit St Petersburg playmaker Andrei Arshavin is heading back to the airport after Arsenal failed to agree a £15m deal. But Arshavin will have a tough job leaving the UK as most of London's terminals are closed because of the weather.

Soccernet reader Dean says the deal is dead because Arshavin has released that he'd like to play for a team that will be in the Champions league next year. "Considering how bad Arsenal are they have no hope," Arshavin never said.

9.43 Tottenham Hotspur are proving very popular in the transfer rumour mill but Reading have confirmed that there have been no firm bids for Spurs target Stephen Hunt, despite a £5million release clause in his contract.

9.30 Sunderland have agreed a loan deal for Manchester City defender Tal Ben-Haim. The 26-year-old Israeli international passed his medical on Sunday and will stay at the Stadium of Light for the remainder of the season.

9.20 Wigan Athletic are negotiating a swap deal for Newcastle United's want-away winger Charles N'Zogbia that would see Ryan Taylor going the other way. Latics defender Titus Bramble is keen to see the deal for his former colleague go through. "I played with Charles for a couple of years at Newcastle and if the deal goes through, he'll be a fantastic signing for us," he said.

9.10 Apparently Russian playmaker Andrei Arshavin is staying in Hertfordshire hotel less than 15 minutes away from Arsenal's London Colney training ground, fueling speculation he is closing in on a move to the Gunners. Zenit St Petersburg were holding out for a £15m fee and it looks like they may have got it.

9.00: Fulham are closing in on a loan deal for Inter midfielder Olivier Dacourt. The French midfielder was in London for a medical on Sunday and the 34-year-old is expected to sign on Monday. Manager Roy Hodgson has also held talks over the return on loan of former striker Brian McBride from Chicago Fire.

8.45: Jose Mourinho's decison to axe Golden Bin winner Ricardo Quaresma from Inter Milan's Champions League squad has lead to speculation that he is on his way to Tottenham Hotspur. While Mourinho said "I do not have space for him", it seems Harry Redknapp may have said: "I do".

8.20: Aston Villa are preparing a £7million swoop for Manchester City defender Micah Richards, according to the Daily Star. Manager Martin O'Neill was going to wait until the end of the season but the knee injury to Danish centre-back Martin Laursen has forced an early bid for City's 20-year-old.

8.05: Hull City look set to miss out on signing Italian World Cup winner Christian Panucci after his agent revealed the defender would remain with Roma. “I really think Christian will remain at Roma and respect his contract,” Oscar Damiani said.

8.00: Shay Given became Manchester City's fourth new signing of the transfer window on Sunday and now the Eastlands club are looking to offload Brazilian misfit Jo to Everton. The £24million striker needs first team football and the Toffees have no fit strikers at the present time.

7.50: All eyes will be on White Hart Lane amid rumours that £20million Liverpool striker Robbie Keane will be rejoining Tottenham Hotspur. The Republic of Ireland striker didn't even make the bench for Sunday's top of the table clash with Chelsea and could become part of a swap deal, with Aaron Lennon going the other way.

Andrei Arshavin has also released that he'd like to play for a team that will be in the Champions league next year. "Considering how bad Arsenal are they have no hope" - Andrei Arshavin

Do you think there is any chance for Man Utd to buy Karim Benzema?

Posted by ando on 02/02/2009

ye they might have a good chance at the uefa cup next season but on the other hand they probably wont. because as Arshavin stated how bad they are, their top player such as Fabregas and Van Persie will not like to play for them anymore. it is a real possability. all eyes shouls be on the emerites stadium come July.

Dont be surprise if there is another surprise transfer in this window...just like when Robinho joined Man City.Stay tune.

Posted by Danny Gray on 02/02/2009

Huge rumours flying around that Man City are lining up a massive twin bid for Podolski and Lahm.

Posted by Brad on 02/02/2009

They bailed on the Santa Cruz deal because they finally realized that its not strikers their team needs, and they already have 6 capable players of playing up top for them. They should be focusing on getting another quality center back, Dunne just doesn't cut it, and a winger to replace the injury pleagued and aging Petrov. That way Ireland, De Jong, and Elano can hold the center with Wright-Phillips out right and Robhino and Bellamy up top. Man City should have focused on only getting Santa Cruz and used Bellamy as there last second deadline buy. Santz Cruz's size would have worked well with Robhino's skill. I see Bellamy and Robhino styles clashing over time.

Posted by linkinstreet on 02/02/2009

I feel sorry for Keane tho. He always gave his all in his Liverpool shirt.

come on la wenger, dont become so confident, sign ashravin is a better way, your team lately very bad, even play with average club become hard then you say salute to team spirit, we are play to win or what??

Posted by mOstwanted on 02/02/2009

I would pick Martins over D.Bent anytime...

Posted by vaibhav on 02/02/2009

this arsshavin saga is really frustrating. hope it finally happens. arsenal do need a new signing. to lift the doom and gloom around the club...if not for anything else

Posted by GuySmylie on 02/02/2009

As a Chelsea fan it's a real shame to see these moves as our team sits by injuried and does nothing. Losing Cole and Essien would kill any team and having Drogba out of favor by the coach doesn't help. There's not a single striker we could get on the cheap or on a loan?

Posted by Bob on 02/02/2009

Any update on the Jenas transfer? Why would spurs want Quaresma given how terrible he has been this season...

Posted by Toon on 02/02/2009

For sure it was a no-brainer. No one would love to have Martins swapped for Bent.

Posted by JBCP3431 on 02/02/2009

The Portuguese press is now reporting that Quaresma is heading to Chelsea on loan.

Posted by Jason on 02/02/2009

Who's at fault for the prolonged Arshavin deal?

Are Zenit delaying to boost the price? Or is Arshavin making outlandish demands?

I just want it to be over

Posted by adewale on 02/02/2009

thanks rafa its a good decision on keane that all we need in liverpool.

Posted by Alen on 02/02/2009

Dont worry about all the talks about Keane, Given, Arshavin and Quaresma. Look at Manchester United's signing's, two talented players Adem ljajic and Zoran Tosic i dont think they will be heading back to their homeland anytime soon... The Spurs suddenly snapped up couple of their own players back and Man City just throw in a name in a hat and lets pick out "kaka" who wont they try to buy they might as well make a move to buy Zidane they need a magician but as long as Man United preform i cant complain...

WOW! the Quaresma loan deal came out of no where. It's a good move by Scolari, best thing he has done since his appointment at Chelsea. The Keane deal was a no brainner. He had to move, thankfully he did. I hope Arshavin comes, i can only see good things with him coming.
I wonder if there are going to be anymore shockers coming up...

Posted by Dean Meltzer (Eshay-Abo) on 02/03/2009

Definitely Scolari's best signing so far, Quaresma is a quality player that will shine for chelsea as much as Drogba has over the past month. As Drogba hit form, teams like Man Utd who are unstoppable at the moment and will for the next 2 decades, will have trouble reaching there target of not conceding a goal for the rest of the year if Drogba keep shooting and playing so consistently.

Quaresma -> chelsea .... I think this is win/win transfer....
Also, Quaresma is given a "final chance" for proven he is a good player.
barcelona -> fail
Inter Milan -> fail
Chelsea -> if fail, he should stay in homeland and not to out anymore....Good luck... Quaresma..
