Although Andrei Arshavin's on-off transfer from Zenit St Petersburg to Arsenal was on earlier on Friday it's now off again, or at least not concluded, according Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.

Speaking at his Friday press conference the Frenchman denied Sky Sports' claim that Arsenal had successfully applied for a work permit for the 27-year-old Russian playmaker, or agreed to pay a £15m transfer fee.

Asked if the clubs had settled on a acceptable sum Wenger said: "No, and we have not applied for a work permit yet for Arshavin. At the moment, we have no agreement with anybody for any transfer."

Meanwhile, Blackburn Rovers have rejected an improved bid of £18.5 million from Manchester City for striker Roque Santa Cruz and despite signing Senegal international El-Hadji Diouf from Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce claims he doesn't have time to find a suitable replacement.

So what about a swap deal? Well Tottenham Hotspur will test Rovers' resolve by offering striker Darren Bent as part of the deal to lure Santa Cruz to White Hart Lane, according to The Times.

If there is a late sale and no swap deal then Allardyce will launch a last gasp £10m bid to sign Portsmouth's Peter Crouch before Monday evening, claim the Daily Mirror.

After Shay Given was dropped by Newcastle United.. erm... I mean rested because of a knee injury, for the trip to potential suitors Manchester City in midweek the Eastland's club have been granted permission to speak to the goalkeeper after agreeing a fee of around £8m.

Also on his way out of St James' Park, at least in his own mind, is Charles Insomnia who claimed his manager's mispronunciation of his name in a TV interview amounted to abuse and vowed never to play for the club again.

"Having been insulted by Joe Kinnear, I will never play for him again while he remains Newcastle manager," the want-away Frenchman blasted.

On the way into Newcastle, and needing an appointment with the head doctor for agreeing to sign a four-and-a-half-year deal with the crisis club, is Bolton Wanderers skipper Kevin Nolan for £4m fee. £3m-rated Toulouse defender Albin Ebondo (The Times) is set to follow.

In a desperate bid to bolster their porous defence Manchester City have added Kolo Toure to their extensive shopping list and are willing to let Micah Richards join Arsenal as a makeweight, so say the Daily Mirror. However, the hacks at the Daily Mail disagree and insist either Chelsea defender Alex or Inter Milan's Marco Materazzi are their real targets.

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has called a halt to his mission to re-sign every player Spurs sold last season so Robbie Keane will have to continue to ride the pine on the Liverpool bench, report The Independent.

Real Madrid are at it again and have signed a long-term agreement with Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo worth about £91m, says The Times, and AC Milan have been told they do not have to lodge a bid for David Beckham before the transfer window closes on Monday, claims the Daily Telegraph.

In the best of the rest... Fulham have signed injury prone Derby County starlet Giles Barnes as a replacement for injury prone midfielder Jimmy Bullard, who joined Hull City earlier this week. Meanwhile, Fiorentina are closing in on the transfer of Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic.

Atletico Madrid are set to make an offer for Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, German side Hoffenheim are believed to be weighing up a bid for Manchester City's £19m misfit Jo and Hull City have agreed a deal to sign Boulogne defender Steven Mouyokolo in the summer.

OF COURSE "No fee agreed and no work permit for Arshavin." Why would we expect anything different?!?!?! I hope Arshavin's head spontaneously combusts.

To MR ARSENE i admire your vision and philosophy but the need to streghten is long over due. When last did we win any silver-ware? My goodness its been really a long time ago.
We seriously need to get strong/tall cenral defenders, to complement the efforts of our right?left full backs and of course ANDREI' ARSHAVIN what a player he is.
Our beloved manager you need to act and very fast too. I remain a GUNNER for life.............

Andrei Arshavin,Arsene...............triple A,can only mean one thing Another Arsenal Attempt.Getting tired of Arsenal transfers in recent years,we tend to lose players frequently which is why we are dropping down the table, other teams back up the players they lose....Wenger needs to wake up and drop the pride!!!

wenger you most buy arshevin to with arsenal

Arsene Wenger seems to believe that come end-May 09, Arsenal will "automatically" qualify for the CL again. Come on Wenger, things are really not looking good. Wake up to reality. As an Arsenal fan, it pains me to see my beloved Gunners scraping it out and dropping points against mid-table teams whom Man Utd and Chelsea can beat easily.

We need to stengthen our team. Otherwise, we will NOT make the cut for the CL nest season. Our goalkeeper is one of our weak links. He will not end any match without conceding at least one goal. This has almost become customary. If you want to keep playing this goalkeeper, then at least make sure we will score more goals than he will concede. Get Arshavin now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's getting harder and harder to become an Arsenal fans lately...I love how the way we play but without a silverware it was useless...come on Mr Arsene...show us your incredible vision...turn it not only become a vision but turn it into a reality...don't just think about business...buying young player then sold it with a high price...

hi wenger, am a man u fan but truth must be told. u play beautiful football but not good football like man u. the difference... trophies. The solution ...... buy experienced players

Posted by jim hk on 02/02/2009

Arsenal need Arshavin,so then at least we got someone who can shoot (I mean shoot on target unlike what adebayor and eboue have been doing) and dribble, maybe then we can have the fourth place back.
with this team now to win anything? some craps need to be kicked away like Denilson, Eboue, Song and Adebayor.

I thinh Arsene Wenger is running out of ideas. Man you are more interested in Business than soccer. Your believe in youngstars has let us down. You can not build a team in 5 years. You use to be a respected manager, but now we are losing faith in you.

Youngstars posessed no experience and that has proven in the middlefield being run by inexperienced Denilson who does not know when to defend or going forward. For me I think you need to buy a defensive midfielder to replace Denilson at all costs. even Alumunia does not deserve in the goal, the man is conceding lots of goals and you are still having faith in him.

Looking at Arshavin saga, it is like the way you made us believe at the beginning of the season that you were buying Barry or Alonso. You know Arsene very well that you sold players like Vieira, Henry, Gilberto while you know very well that it did you no favour to do it and it only weakened the club.

Come on Arsene, buy Arshavin now and a defensive midfielder.

Hi wenger, we love the fluidity of Arsenal football under your able professorship. However know that you can only drink champaign with a cup, so that without the silverware, the game is nothing. we got to equip our bench by getting more made players instead of just reliance on the current crop of young players.
Wenger please do something for our beloved Arsenal, Gunners for life.

hi professor, keep up the good work. this season is not over yet, what we need is luck. i believe in the crop of players at arsenal and with the inclusion of andrei arshavin, i know arsenal will make it. Gunners for life.

I am a fan of arsenal since 1971. i do respect AW philosophy.Buying AA is a master piece. the midfield will with rosecky, fabregas n AA together with walcott, adebayor n van persie will make them very very strong .Arsenal will finish 3 rd round in may. believe me.
they need to buy a big central defender like ferdinand to shut up defence errors for next season.
Next year the title will be at the emirates.
