It would seem that Andrei Arshavin's tediously protracted transfer from Zenit St Petersburg to Arsenal is only a "final decision" away from completion, according to the Russian playmaker.

But as that final decision appears to be whether or not the Russian Premier League club will accept £12m for their £18m-rated forward the conclusion might be a "no". It all depends if Zenit receive any other offers for their want-away 27-year-old.

Meanwhile, Chelsea winger Florent Malouda, who has failed to establish himself as a first-team regular at Stamford Bridge under three successive managers (Avram Grant, Jose Mourinho and Luiz Felipe Scolari) might be on his way to Juventus.

Claudio Ranieri is eager to sign reinforcements as he attempts to catch Serie A leaders Inter Milan and the former Chelsea boss has earmarked Malouda as a key recruit. Although the 27-year-old has been a flop since his £13.5m move from Lyon in 2007 he is also wanted by Villarreal.

But a word of caution! earlier on Monday, the Soccernet office was full of guffaws and giggling when news broke that the very same Juventus were preparing a bid for West Ham United sharp-shooter Carlton Cole.

However, it turned out Ranieri had not gone stark raving bonkers and Juve denied all knowledge of such an outrageous transfer.

Following on from this morning's superb insight, Pascal Chimbonda has, and God knows why, been resigned by Tottenham Hotspur and is joined by Chelsea's Carlo Cudicini.

In manager Harry Redknapp's best piece of transfer business Spurs misfit Hossam Ghaly has left the club and joined Saudi Arabian side Al Nasr.

BBC Sport seems to be the only organisation reporting that West Ham have signed, sealed and delivered Brescia striker Savio Nsereko in what is said to be a record transfer. Even their official website is hush-hush on that right now.

It looks like Bolton Wanderers could be heading back into the transfer market after signing Mark Davies (!) from Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Guardian is reporting a club record bid for Miguel Veloso of Sporting Lisbon.

Newcastle United's creaking defence could be helped out by Stephen McManus of Celtic, claims BBC Sport.

Great Arsene, if u can sign Ashavin, it will be a plus to our squad as Cesc will be out for a while. I am also positive that Thomas Rosicky, Eduardo and Walcott are on their verge of returning. Arsenal will surely be a great thing when they are all back. Wishing Arsenal the best of luck this season.

hi am tosin a gunners fans i want wenger to please sign ashavin i wiil be happy if he signs him because he is a good player to replace fabregas before he comes back.

Posted by julius on 01/27/2009

we all want Ashavin in Arsenal, pliz Wenger can you sacrifice to this player only.it will be a great season even though

Unfortunately the Arshavin saga is typical of Arsenal in recent years. They make very few signings. They - more than most clubs - operate very much 'on the QT' making it hard to determine what is actually happening. They are very slow to conclude any deal - recall the signing of Baptista which dragged on over two seasons. Tactically the error to me is that by leaving everything to the last minute Arsenal are disadvantaged - in this case Zenit knows that if Arsenal doesn't sign Arshavin they'll have no option left as to an alternate signing.

It's all in Arsene's head. Arsenal will sign Arshavin eventually. If we miss the january transfer window then it will be at the end of the season. The dude is ready to leave so thats half the problem solved and he has expressed his desire to be a gunner (who wouldn't).
I believe we have enough to make the top four of PL, and the next round of the FA Cup and most of all the Champions league with dudu, rosicky and possibly Walcott coming back.

Posted by ken on 01/28/2009

it will be great if they sign ANDREI cause he is a great player.HE was fantastic at euro 2008 so p lease WENGER,WITH ALL DUE RESPECT,hurrrrrrrry up and damate signnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn him

Posted by burn on 01/28/2009

it would be nice if(wenger) u go ahead 2 sacrifice a bit by signing arshavin,.,u d got nasri n by t time eduardo, rosicky, walcott, fabregas wil make a come back soon.,.,it wil be a fantastic midfielding run for arsenal in future.,.its worth sign in arshavin.,.

Posted by lalas on 01/28/2009

Arshavin will sign for arsenal. but whether he would be able to use some of the players....who are not giving 100 percent. would that help...i wonder!!!!!

Posted by KEN on 01/28/2009

AS MUCH AS I WANT TO RESPECT ARSENAL'S "WAGE STRUCTURE" I FEEL IT WONT HURT TO BEND A LITTLE TO REMEDY A SERIOUS THREAT. WE MAY NOT FEATURE IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE AT THIS RATE AND IF ARSENE IS NOT CAREFUL THERE WILL BE NOBODY TO PAY ANY WAGE TO AS WE RISK LOOSING ALL OUR STARS. ARSHAVIN IS A GOOD OPTION FOR US. "NO RULE WITHOUT EXCEPTIONS"

Mr mark H.I can see kaka has been too much for you,why not renew your interest on Andrei Arshavin?

Posted by Jackan from Kenya on 01/28/2009

Arsene Wenger should buy Arsharvin or not i think he should be offloadded to Madrid we have been paatient for soo long. I think Rigkaard will be a good replacement and i think he will come immediately and sell Toure to Man city, Gallas to Milan and bring in Hangeland and Fernando Meira in Defence,Jaansakaleman and Daniel Carvalho

I have been taking this all the years but i think its getting out of hands...Arsene Wenger, if you know you want to practice economics why not go into the stock market and start economizing your stock???For years you have been keeping under 25 arsenal on a spot...The board gives you money to buy a player, you refuse saying the boys are good...The boys are good is not gonna keep us on the title race at all.....If wenger is not ready to buy players now that the board insists he does, then i think you should pack your bag and bagages and leave the emirates for madrid..we cant be having a snub on the club as a manager...Arshavin must come or wenger must go..Nonsense...Up Gunners....

Posted by Francis-Uganda on 01/29/2009

Please!!!!!!!!! GREAT ARSENE, buy ANDREI irrespective of our finnacial possition. if you don,t have funds at your disposal, announce a world wide fundraising drive and decleare account number that we in Uganda can deposit funds before transfer window ends

I am really sad to see Arsenal dropping more and more points. As a Gunners fan since my school days, I am really disappointed with Arsenal's performance this season. And I am not even talking about us winning the Premier League Title or Champions League. At the rate we are conceding goals and dropping points, we may not even play in Europe next season. Yes, not even the UEFA Cup! Arsene Wenger has carried his youth policy to the extreme. Every new season, Arsenal is playing with a younger and younger sqaud and the results simply tell the whole story. Maybe Arsene has been at Arsenal for too long already and its time we get a new manager.

Posted by David Lee on 01/29/2009

From the results of the recent few games Arsene Wenger should realise that the present squad is not good enough to even retain 4th position to qualify for Europe. So why is he delaying the signing of Arsharvin? Sign him immediately - otherwise you can say good-bye to Europe next season!!

Posted by abayomi adeeyo on 01/29/2009

wenger should sign arsharvin immediately and two other player, one defending midfider and one sharp shooter striker i.e samuel eto

Posted by ifeanyi on 01/29/2009

Arsene Wenger will always be the man to beat when it comes to valuation of players. He has consistently shown great believe in his players and has refused to be carried away by pressure and if Arshavin comes or not the team will still make it to the usual top four. In Arsene we trust.

Posted by mendan on 01/29/2009

MUST buy some players or forget about PL or CL. Too many games ahead and too many palyers are injured. Buy forward and midfield please.. sell adebayor and bentner.. lack of desire to score

Posted by Robaa on 01/29/2009

Mr. Wenger plz sell toure, almunia, adebayo & denilson.buy arshavin, veloso, hangelland & alex gregory.other we gooners should prepare 4 uefa cup nxt season

Posted by Seedorf on 01/29/2009

It seems Arsene Wenger dont know how we fans feel when arsenal losses. He is playing with the european success of the team in the coming season and dont be surprise if he did not make the top 4 bcos, villa is not ready to lose any match and arsenal is loosing pace with the top 4 already. Beside, Arsenal is not linked with any other player and the transfer window is nearing its end. Pls, someone should tell Arsene that enough of this gamble cos we fans can no more exercise patience. We need at least a trophy this season. If he dont want arshavin, let him sign other players at least to save us from this mess this seson. Gunners 4 life.

Posted by Base_UZ:NIGERIA on 01/29/2009

My dear friend Arsene,I know your economic concerns but at the end of the day,you might loose more if we don't qualify for Champions League not to talk of premiership success. What i'm saying basically is for us to buy Arshavin and a defensive mined midfielder cos these would go a long way for us.Your present Squad is good but do we(the fans)have the patince because at this pace, winning a trophy would take a minimum of another 3 years

Posted by Ricardo! on 01/30/2009

yo u gotta sign arshavin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! essential 2 survival!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! get back fabregas, rosicky, walcott, eduardo and others then buy a defensive middie and we may survive!!!!!!!!! it is so sad how if we fail to make CL fabregas, gallas, walcott are all out the door i'll tell u who we need is arsene to get his act together, sign arshavin, and make CL.
then, in the offseason, say goodbye 2 kolo toure and the untouchables (sad, i know hes the last one) and work a deal that sends a big CB to Emirates, like Matthew Upson of West Ham United, im sure it would do him justice to come to Arsenal for big money and be a starter right away, and another defender, Armand Traore, will be returning from loan next season as well as Phillipe Senderos, but we need to permantly sell him off to Italy. Whatever u do loan Carlos Vela cause we're sellin Bentner if its the last thing we do, and with Van Persie, Adebayor, Eduardo and Arshavin ahead of Vela, he would benefit elsewhere. Go Gunners baby

Posted by danz on 01/30/2009

we need to sign more than just arshavin! will wenger ever splash out on a big name player, like we should of with torres a couple years back? or continue to hunt for young players with potential while the other clubs collect big players for the current times not for 2-4 years from now. how much longer can we stay competitive in the EPL if we dont have genuine game-breakers.as much as i love Arsenal...its getting harder to enjoy watching them.

Posted by Tony on 01/30/2009

Arsene must buy arshavin becos we dnt have any attacking midfielder now and also sell diaby and eboue.

Posted by ayo nig on 01/30/2009

Pls MR wenger 4 godsake hurry up and sign andrei we realy need the guy at arsenal bcos we fan can not afford to loose again our midfield has allready collapes pls offload diaby and buy correct blocking 4 for us if we may not feature in the nest championsleague

Posted by Mb Tsafe on 01/30/2009

hey hey guys pls take it easy, I know sooner or later Arsenal will rule the world in terms of football but still I back the deal for Arshavin coz we surely need him. OUR PASSION IS FOREVER, UP ARSENAL 4 EVER ARSENAL.
