On The Move
Posted by Phil Holland on 01/22/2009

Another day, another raft of almost entirely unsubstantiated rumours linking Manchester City to some of the most expensive players in the world.

Thursday sees the Eastlands club consigning Kaka to the dustbin of broken dreams and turning their attention to Theirry Henry and Didier Drogba, according to, well, everyone: The Sun, The Daily Mail, The Guardian, The Independent...

You never know, perhaps City will next be linked with an audacious move for Barrack Obama.

If The Guardian are to be believed City have already been rebuffed by David Villa, Gianluigi Buffon, Kaka, and Henry, but they just don’t know when to give up and are back in for the Barcelona striker.

The Independent reckon that Henry is tempted by feathering his nest with City’s riches, but feels he has unfinished business in the Catalan capital; which probably means the Champions League, which Barca are still in and City are light years from. Perhaps the summer transfer window will see a Premier League return for Henry.

Perhaps more likely, albeit only fractionally, is the Daily Star’s suggestion that Chelsea are plotting a “sensational” swap deal which will see Luis Felipe Scolari offload Drogba and send him packing to Man City and replace him with Robinho.

The Daily Mail are on the story too, but they reckon a deal for the seemingly out-of-favour Drogba will be a straight cash deal and have told Chelsea to name their price.

After being left out by Scolari for two consecutive squads, and having been slammed after his lacklustre showing at Old Trafford, Drogba has begun fluttering his eyelids at prospective clubs and on Wednesday even sent a not-very-coded message to his old club, Marseille expressing his “love” for all things OM.

But it’s not all one-way traffic for Man City, apparently, according to The Sun, Wigan and Bolton are sniffing around Micah Richards and could be preparing bids of around £5m for the England prospect.

Although his development has stalled this season, is there any logical reason why Richards would be prepared to swap the well-funded Eastlands circus for either Bolton or Wigan?

And just in case you’re not sick of City, there's more: Despite the fact that Joe Hart is perfectly acceptable and a very promising young keeper, City are also hoping to land shot-stopping superstar Shay Given, the only problem is Newcastle have told City they won’t take a penny less than £14m.

Elsewhere Arsenal’s excruciatingly drawn out chase for Andrei Arshavin could result in Arsene Wenger spitting out his dummy and joining Real Madrid in the summer. Maybe.

With The Daily Mail reporting that talks between Zenit and the Gunners have stalled, that could given more bargaining power to Real presidential candidate Florentino Perez, who according to The Mirror is ready to give Wenger a twin role as coach and general manager at the Bernebeu.

Back on planet Earth one deal that might actually happen is Blackburn’s reported interest in Barca striker Eidur Gudjohnsen. The Sun say a £2m offer could reunite the former Bolton striker with his former Bolton manager, Sam Allardyce.

After Spurs scraped into the Carling Cup final with 6-4 aggregate win over Burnley Harry Redknapp spoke of the weakness in his squad, but he won’t be strengthening the goalkeeping position with Chelsea’s Carlo Cudicini after Scolari said the Italian would be going nowhere until the summer at least, according to The Guardian.

And finally, The Sun, citing Italian newspapers, report that Juventus could be lining up a bid for Liverpool’s Dirk Kuyt.

Man City need to Qualify for the Champions League first and most importantly save them selves from Relegation first.Just buying big players is not the solution

I have a few questions for all Manchester City fans, supporters, whatever. Let's say, hypothetically, that City buy themselves enough talent to actually win a trophy either this year or next. Will you actually be able to enjoy a trophy that the entire footballing community ridicules you for buying? Should it even really count? Do you honestly believe you DESERVE to win ANYTHING if some middle eastern group just rolls in and throws absurd cash at your club? It's ridiculous, this makes Abromovich at CCCFC look penniless by comparison, 14+ million for NoSkill De Jong?????? That's more then Barca bought Henry for! I hope City are relegated and Robinho leaves for Chelsea.

Mark Hughes - mediocre manager, too much money - not a clue. Enough said. Let's hope the Championship beckons. Disgruntled life-long supporter. Bring back Malcolm Allison.

To chris villano i have just read your comment and i like to say to u that what ever happen to man city it's non you your business i don't know which team you support but i think that the way you come out and talk about the team that is the riches in the world is because you are jealous and your team can't buy any players like man city do and it's not your money that they use to spend or buy players so uyou should not have any problem with them

ok mancity needs to stop. its getting ridiculous. craig bellamy is an anverage to decent forward now. while he may be quick he cant finish. i feel bad since your crosstown rivals manu(YEA) are paying less money and stiil winning. they picked up berbatov but thats been the only big one. and drogba and henry would be stupid to give up their chances at winning their leagues and champions league.

Are Man City supporters crazy, do you think Henry will ever play for City? get a clue.........big name players want to play CL football not championship. Mark Hughes has no clue he's a decent manager and did a good job at Blackburn but thats as far as it goes. City seems not to have a concrete plan on how to get to the top, its not going to happen overnight.they have to get the right manager who can attract big players, and they do have a good youth system there they have to build that way....not by overpaying for players and driving up the prices for other clubs.

You can ridicule all you want about Man city but wasn't this the same with chealsea a few years back?

Posted by Daviek on 01/23/2009

All my life I have been a Middlesborough fan, and I must admit I am very jealous of the position Man City is in. I however would love to see the title won by a club other than the top 4, so wish man city the best of luck. I think every one else is just sour, if man city have the money to do it then they should sign every star player they can and give the title a shake, although even with a team of stars they would have to gel first.

P.S how is Man City different from Man Utd, Man United sign every player who is even half decent, wether or not they need them just look at saha and Berbatov.

Partly, I support the two last comments. If the jealous fellows out there had at least supported their acclaimed fight against overprising of players ealier, the system wouldn't have been messed up by Chelsea FC and a few other clubs. Why now the shout about Man City when Chelsea bouhgt players, some of whom they never used or sold up to 1/3 of the price they bought their signatures? When Arsen Wenger, Sepp Blatter, and a few others lamented the Money Madness into football some years back some folks saw them as either enemies of progress, or poor coaches who have no cash to splash. Its telling hard on the aboriginal intendment and ideals of football and they're calling on Man City. I am never a Man City fan anyway, I am footbal fan, and an Arsenal 4 real. I'm just facing reality.

Hmmm.

2003/2004 - £7m - Smith
2003/2004 - £7m - Heinze
2003/2004 - £6m - Kleberson
2004/2005 - £20m - Rooney
2005/2006 - £7m - Vidic
2005/2006 - £5.5m - Evra
2006/2007 - £18.6m - Carrick
2006/2007 - £17m - Hargreaves
2006/2007 - £15m - Anderson (Combined £30m)

Yeah, only one big transfer fee. Typical united fan living in cloud cuckoo land. And this doens't include the signing on and loan fees paid to 'free' signings like Van Der Saar and Tevez.

Well, alomst all the clubs are either thinking or planning of bringing in (a)particular player(s)or discading some of the players they have for better ones.

Man-City should not be rediculed for expressing their intensions for particular players. Just that the media have picked it for Man City. It could be true or false. But revelation will be at the end of the transfer window or may be in summer as for now players would want to stick to their clubs until the cups are won.

Man City do not relent persue those players you have intentions for especially in the best interest of the club.

I am a Chelsea (Blues') fan but I look at the issue at hand. Even Chelsea if the club is offloading some of the players and buying new ones, it should be in the interest of the club.

I watch English soccer and not just the blues. Clubs want to improve thir standards or maintain the standards in the echange of players.

I pen off.

Regards,

Lawrence.

i agree with most comments above. i'm a Blues fan and strongly feel Robinho should been wise enough to go to Chelsea. Look , Rome wasn't built in a day and in Man City's case i certainly believe to a great extend they are lacking proper planning. For now they should built on the available resources, get themselves into a good position not fighting relegation , instil a bit of confidence in the current crop of players , get themselves a better manager who has the capacity to lure good players. They should approach the thing as a long term project not an overnight dreams.

As a football fan, I think all this is rubbish and ridiculous. I reckon its exciting to get new world known players into the squad, but what's the use if they cant even click together? Man city was once a good team with the ability to do that; now see where they are. Buying players wont solve their problem. They should instead work with what they have, get the players to bind and when they feel that they are strong enough, make some new additions that can bring them some extra edge. Making a 100 Milliion offer for KAKA, thats bull! I am so glad he didnt go.
