Danny Guthrie's stock has been rising in the opinion of many Newcastle fans recently with some solid Premier League performances.

So how do his numbers stack up vs his two heart-of-the-midfield comrades?

I have taken a look at Danny's stats (individual, team and only looking at games started in the Premier League) this season and compared them to Cabaye and Tiote - there are some interesting learnings:

Yohan Cabaye

Games: 21

Wins: 10
Win %: 48%

Draws: 6
Draw %: 29%

Losses: 5
Loss %: 23%

Average points per game: 1.7

Goals scored: 2
Assists: 4

Team goals scored: 30
Average team goals scored per game: 1.4

Team goals conceded: 27
Average team goals conceded per game: 1.3

Danny Guthrie

Games: 10

Wins: 5
Win %: 50%

Draws: 1
Draw %: 10%

Losses: 4
Loss %: 40%

Average points per game: 1.6

Goals scored: 1
Assists: 0

Team goals scored: 14
Average team goals scored per game: 1.4

Team goals conceded: 20
Average team goals conceded per game: 2

Cheick Tiote

Games: 14

Wins: 7
Win %: 50%

Draws: 5
Draw %: 36%

Losses: 2
Loss %: 14%

Average points per game: 1.9

Goals scored: 0
Assists: 2

Team goals scored: 20
Average team goals scored per game: 1.4

Team goals conceded: 12
Average team goals conceded per game: 0.8

SOME OF THE KEY POINTS

Some might have assumed that Tiote playing might restrict goals scored. Not so. In fact all three have an identical record vs this measure.

Many see Danny Guthrie as a creative player - therefore I was surprised to see that he doesn't have a single league assist this season (according to the Premier League official site). Cabaye leads with 4 assists.

Tiote is vital to the team. He has the highest win % of the three (50%), the lowest loss % (14%), the highest amount of points per game (1.9), and on average we concede only 0.8 goals per game when he starts. He also has 2 assists!

With Guthrie in the starting lineup we have lost 40% of our games and conceded an average of 2 goals per game! Though it is important to point out that Danny has not started a league game this season alongside Tiote.

All of the above is interesting (to me anyway!) but stats often only tell part of the story.
I think most of us would agree that Tiote + Cabaye is our strongest starting option - but Danny G is definitely a more than capable backup.
