Newcastle United

Saturday's game at home to Swansea was Alan Pardews 38th league game as manager of Newcastle United - the equivalent of a full Premier League season. Here are a few brief stats reviewing the progress we are making:

Overall league performance:
P38 W13 D15 L10 F53 A51 PTS 54

With the points and goal difference achieved we would have finished in 8th place in last season's Premier League (below Everton on GD)

All league games win ratio: 34%

Not great, but when you consider the improvement in this season's league win ratio since the summers transfer dealings:

This season league games win ratio: 44% - significantly better.

When you include all cup games, Pardew's overall win ratio is 36%

In summary, Pardew is doing a solid job. He faced the daunting task of replacing fan favourite Chris Hughton in very controversial circumstances. Despite this he has managed to maintain the great team spirit implemented by his predecessor. He (and the board) have shipped out a lot of very popular players, but his (and Carr's) replacements have, in the main, been excellent. The season-on-season improvement in win % tells me that if Ashley spends in January we could see even greater progress.

The draw vs Swansea was disappointing, as was the performance vs Norwich, but this is a thin squad and if bolstered, the future could be very bright and we are in a great position to claim a top 7 finish and a decent FA cup run this season.

I've also taken a look at how our long list of managers have fared in the Premier League era:

1. Kevin Keegan P273 Win ratio: 52% (nb a number of these games were pre PL and in the old Second Division

2. Chris Hughton P74 Win ratio: 53% (Again, the majority of these games were played in the second tier)

3. Sir Bobby Robson P255 Win ratio: 47% (Excellent - all top flight games as well as Champions League fixtures too)

4. Glenn Roeder P73 Win ratio: 45%

5. Graeme Souness P83 Win ratio: 43%

6. Kenny Dalglish P78 Win ratio: 38%

7. Alan Pardew P42 Win ratio: 36%

8. Ruud Gullit P52 Win ratio: 35%

9. Fat Sam Allardyce P24 Win ratio: 33%

10. Joe Kinnear P26 Win ratio: 19%

I only include the above out of interest - I don't think we can read too much into the figures as several of the managers worked in very different conditions to Alan Pardew.

Personally I have warmed to Pardew and I am looking forward to watching how we progress under his leadership for a long time to come (I hope) HTL

Good article! Interesting stats. Pardew has exceeded most people's expectations this season to date,
The worry is the squad is far too light and we need to invest in the January window to keep the momentum going

I too have warmed up to Pardew. I no longer have the feeling of anguish like we don't have the right pilot at the helm. He's doing a great job, and hopefully he keeps it up!

Considering the limited financial resources at AP's disposal, he has done a great job. Credit also to his chief scout. In the past, Newcastle wasted money on the wrong players but now the buys have been mostly astute and spot on.
Heart breaking to read of Ba hitting the bar or post so many times this season and even Colo too. Just an inch or so difference and it would have been a goal.
Really hope that Newcastle will have no major injuries to their players for the remaining part of the season. Looking forward to see what new players come in during January window.

Whilst I agree that Pardew has done a good job i wonder how much of his success has been built on the work of Chris Hughton and the work he did in firstly the promotion season and also during his all too brief stint in the premier league in fostering a good positive team ethic and spirit as well as creating the basis of the defensive structure that is now so crucial to the success of the team

Pardew has done well to build on hughtons work whilst also weeding out negative and disruptive players but i think his best work may prove to be his acquisition of yohan cabaye who i believe is genuine class and a player who could be the future of the club if he isnt courted by wealthier clubs same can also apply to ben arfa

it is shaping up to be and interesting january and summer and if pardew can bring in players of similar calibre than i think the club can definatly come into its own and start competing for 6th 7th or maybe even higher

Pardew 1st anniversary rating 7/10
