Newcastle United

The Saturday before deadline day usually means hundreds of stories linking various players to various clubs. Not so this Saturday when it comes to Newcastle United - only one story has dominated the day:

OUT

Andy Carroll to Tottenham (Every media outlet going)

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story/_/id/872505/spurs-fail-with-L25m-bid-for-newcastle-star-andy-carroll?&cc=5739

How likely? Redknapp does love tapping up other club's players. The media seem to be willing this one through too but it will not happen at £25million.
Sure, £25million is a lot of money for a young man in his first full year as a Premier League player - but we have all seen what he can do. He has a goal every other game, numerous assists, wins everything in his own area and theirs from set pieces and is a full England International. Even if he goes through a lean spell in terms of goals he will be a handful and a nightmare to play against for opposition players.
I have read one or two comments along the lines of "what if opposing defenders sus him out by next season?" Yeah, good luck with that one - sus out a 6 foot 4 battering ram and lets see where it gets you.
Carroll is our talisman. They say every player has a price and I fear that will probably be true of any player playing for Mike Ashley - but to those (few) of you who would cash in at £25m, we will not see a penny of it so why would you want that?
At least we have not just surrendered and sold within 24 hours like those just down the road.....

Carroll will still be a Newcastle United player when the window closes.

I totally agree with what would happen if we sold him, Mike Ashley would pocket the money and the club would not see a penny of it(unless the fridge in his office is broken he would invest some of the money in that), as Pardew is trying to build a team around Carroll why would we sell him? It means he would have to re think his whol stratergy.

Unfortunately as long as Fat Ashley is blindly running the club we will always be seen as a selling club and I don't think that will change until he is gone. Other clubs are always going to take advantage of his lack of football smarts over the chance to make a quick buck and try to poach players accordingly. While I don't think Carroll will go this week - over the off season if FMA is still there will be a different story along with guys such as Colo and Enrique who have great seasons.

geez, what drivel are you guys posting. If we got 30m + take it!
Ashley will invest it (unless you believe all the drivel from NUST - what waste of effort that all is)
No businessman would fail to invest when the ke link has gone - probably not the 30m, but woul expect at least 20.

It winnit happen anyway, he doesn't want to go, and nobody (even that wassac Redknapp) would pay that much for a guy with so much development to go.

We'll gt 1 in (probably Ireland) and sell no one.

Seggy boy, so by your reckoning Ashley reinvests 2/3 of income? You mean like he did with the 10m for Martins, 10m for Bassong, 12m for Milner, 6m for Beye, 6m for Duff (the list goes on). Nope. Of that he didn't invest a penny and we were relegated so where do you get that theory from?

Posted by jjmag on 01/30/2011

Listen mate ,
ashley bought the club then did not do due dilligence so had to pay out another 100 mill so obviously the money he got off players went to that. Now we have structure and are heading the right way even if it does not always seem to look like it.We ahve a good squad with heart and just a few additions should see us through so no panic eh?

Posted by Marc on 01/30/2011

OK JJmag 2 comments on that. 1. He should have do e due diligence! 2. He appointed keegan, spent money on players he didn't want (Xisco) via Dennis Wise giving him a MASSIVE ridiculous salary - when was he thinking about servicing the debt at that point?

Posted by OZ Phil on 01/30/2011

JJMag, I hate to point out the obivious but we were already relgated when Bassong, Martins, Beye and Duff were sold and from memory Beye and Duff went for more like 1M not 5M. Milner was a great loss but he wanted out, you can argue about Ashley but the problems at Newcastle go back many years, too many managers, poor decisions, over paid players the list goes on. Ashley has to take the blame for Wise but after that he simply came in at the end of very bad management.

Marc - it doesn't matter anymore that MA didn't do due dilligence, it's in the past. What he has and is doing, is putting NUFC on a more secure footing financially now and it is working. Yes he has a debt that NUFC will pay off (would you plough in £X millions of your own money and NOT want it back?) and if he has to take it back via a percentage of player sales or via the sale of the club - that is up to him as it is his club - I'll let you into a little secret [

Each to their own but a couple of points: Beye went in the January window leaving us short in that position. Duff and Beye both went for more than £1m. And a question - if you think Ashley came in at the end of a long period of bad management (and I agree his predecessors were abysmal) do you think he has ended the run of bad management? If so what do you make of the Wise/ Keegan fiasco, relegation, constant strategy changes, the appointment of Kinnear, the sacking of Hughton etc etc etc etc. ESPECIALLY relegation off the back of the Kinnear appointment.

Can't believe some of these pro-Ashley posts. He really has got you brainwashed hasn't he?!

Basically while we're doing okay in the league no one is bothered about what MA does.

I bet you £25m that if we sold Carroll and didn't replace him with someone even remotely as effective, which judging by MA record is exactly what would happen, we would drop down the league.

And if we dropped down the league you people would be moaning.

Ashley is a moron who is lurching from plan to plan.

Money is the only language he speaks and if £30m came in for Carroll he'd probably take it.

The question you have to ask is how valuable are the goals of Carroll?

In my opinion worth more, at this point, than ANY amount of cash. It'd be short sighted to just cash in on him.

I fear that in the summer this is what may happen.

Gallowgate, I agree with you, in addition, I think MA mistakes are due to football inexperience as it is a different business to what he was in, he took wrong advice and made some appalling decisions, (OK He did with Hughton recently) that aside however the team is now stable, if he keeps Carroll, which would be a sensible business decision and we finish higher up the table investment will come. As far as I am aware he runs SD on a small wage high bonus incentive scheme, so if he applies that to NUFC then the future is good. Look at Arsenal as a model for example, if in 5 years we're going in the same direction then expect european football again. Although if I am wrong we could be reet in the broon stuff. I just hope I am right

Posted by Gallowgate on 01/30/2011

It's easy to throw the "Ashely apologist" remarks at people, isn't it? As I stated in my long message, I don't condone the mistakes of the past but that is exactly what they are - MISTAKES! Lo and behold none of us have made any we regret. This is going to take time, the club needs securing, I doubt Carroll will be sold this window as securing PL football for next season is paramount. As I said, whoeve bought the club was going to have to make severe cuts (sounds familiar) and sadly due to his past mistakes, MA is the scapegoat for this at the moment. Oh well.

Posted by Ian on 01/30/2011

Gallowgate - if we sell AC whether it's now or in the summer I think that sends out a worrying message. Basically we're a selling club with little ambition. And any decent player we have we'll sell to the highest bidder.

It's got little to do with Ashleys past, though when forming an opinion on THIS issue it's very hard not to take his previous actions into account to form an opinion on what he is likely to do.

It is short sighted to take, say £30m, when the effect mid to long term that his loss to the team could lose more money than that.

Also if we sell Carroll then who would be next? Tiote? Barton? Enrique? No one would be off limits.

We still need a competitive team to compete in the PL otherwise we'll be fighting relegation again.

Posted by 4411 on 01/30/2011

Carroll will still be here come Feb 1st, Ashley may be a bit of a dick but we sit 2 losses from a relegation fight so selling our main asset is hardly financially beneficial. We'd need to spend at least 20 million to get a replacement in and there is no saying they could cut it in prem
If we're relegated again, it'll take years to come back up if ever.
Even Ashley is aware of the fact that Tiote, Enrique, Jonas, Nolan, Barton would not spend another season in the championship

Posted by Ian on 01/30/2011

It's not even about whether Ashley reinvests the money or not.

Buying a striker for £20m or £50m doesn't guarantee goals.

It's a common misconception that the more money you spend = the better you are.

As fans of Newcastle we should know better than most this isn't necessarily the case.

The fact is Carroll works in our squad and it would be loonacy to flog him at any point. You have to be sensible and say what we have with Carroll is more valuable than £xx million
