Newcastle United striker Andrew Carroll will get his chance to shine for England in next week's friendly with France, as England boss Fabio Capello has been told by the FA that he can pick the in-form striker.

Carroll was the star of the show at the Emirates on Sunday, netting the winner in Newcastle's 1-0 win over Arsenal, and his performance sent yet another message to Capello, who will announce his England squad on Saturday.

An England source told ESPNsoccernet: "Fabio has either watched Andy Carroll or had him watched by his aides five times already this season, and there is no doubt that this player now deserves his chance with England. There is no reason not to pick him, not at the moment, and we do not think that the FA will raise any objections."

Reports had suggested that Carroll's inclusion in the squad would require an FA sanction because of his off the field problems.

Carroll has been in news recently after he was ordered to stay with team-mate Kevin Nolan by magistrates in Hexham, Northumberland, after he was charged with assaulting an ex-girlfriend. Days later his £70,000 customised, chrome-plated Range Rover was torched while parked in Nolan's drive and graffiti aimed at Carroll was scrawled across Nolan's garage door.

Less than a week after the arson attack, Carroll was ordered to pay a fine of £1,000 at Newcastle Crown Court after he admitted accidentally glassing a reveller in a city centre nightclub.

But an FA source told ESPNsoccernet: "It was some time ago when Alan Smith was left out of the England squad because he was on a charge, more recently Steven Gerrard played for England while his trial was pending.

"Andy Carroll himself played for the Under-21s when still on a charge, which resulted in a £1,000 fine. As far as the FA are concerned he is available to play unless a decision is taken to the contrary.

''The FA's agreements with the manager is that Capello has the last say on the players he wishes to select. If he should consult the FA about this player and seek our advice, then that is a different matter, and every case would be judged on its merits."

Earlier, Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton said that he thought Carroll deserved all the praise that has been coming his way.

"Andy is mentally very strong. He is a player who is developing, apart from having a prowess in the air, he has given us a mobility which can stretch defenders," Hughton said. "He has still got a long way to go. Andy is working hard on all aspects on his game and he is certainly going in the right direction.

"For me, being picked for Newcastle United is the most important. Anything which comes from that means he has earned it."
