“Come writers and critics who prophesize with your pen” (Hard to beat a bit of Dylan)

Saturday marked one year to the day of the sad passing of football Legend Sir Bobby Robson. On the 30th August it will be six years since he was sacked by Freddy Shepherd shortly after a 4 v 2 defeat to Aston Villa. Little did we know then how much would change at the club within a relatively short period of time.

When I sat down to write this I was going to cover old ground looking at the errors of the past and to draw comparisons with how Liverpool progressed by appointing Rafa Benitez shortly before we appointed Souness. Both clubs have endured difficulties in the past 18 months, but theirs nothing like the scale of ours. However, I’m not going to do that – the past is the past so let’s move on but let’s NOT forget it.

Perhaps the biggest change is the attitude and expectations of the majority of our fans going in to this coming season. Once upon a time most of us expected European football – we enjoyed a couple of brilliant Champions League seasons and featured regularly in the UEFA cup. European qualification was expected, though rarely DEMANDED as some of the nations southern based red tops and radio stations like to claim.

This year most of the lads that I sit with or talk to would be happy to stay up – 15th seems to be the most common prediction amongst those that I have discussed this with on Twitter. So much for the ‘unrealistic expectations’ of our fans! I think that 15th is more than realistic.

Days after we were promoted a national sports radio station ran with “Who should replace Chris Hughton?” WHAT? I was outraged. Hughton has done a magnificent job and deserves a great deal of time and patience. It only got better:

Presenter: “Next on the line we have Dave, an Arsenal fan from Essex”

Dave: “New-car-sell are a massif clab. Surely they should be looking at samone like Jose Mourinho to take them forward!” (Very nice of you Dave, but Jose? Really? As if)

-A few calls later-

Presenter: “And now we have Simon from Luton. Simon.”

Simon: “How completely unrealistic are these Geordie fans? I mean for God’s sake – Jose Mourinho? Who the hell do they think they are?”

Did the presenter correct Simon and point out that it was in fact an Arsenal fan who had made that ludicrous suggestion? Of course not. Only one NUFC fan called in – he supported Hughton and was passed over as quickly as he came on.

I also love the claims that we are “impatient” in our demands for success. Impatient? Over 40 years without a major trophy and we can still attract crowds of over 50,000 in the second tier of English football! I think we are amongst the most patient fans on earth.

And what about last season? I expected a lot less than we got. I honestly thought we would struggle, so to sit and watch us go 23 home league games unbeaten was superb. I enjoyed almost every moment of it, but I am in no hurry to drop back down there and go through it all again.

Come on lads and lasses – let’s get behind Chrissy Hughton and all of the lads this season. Let’s not make knee-jerk reactions about the suitability of Chris for the job if we are trounced at Old Trafford. Lets back them to the hilt and play our part as the 12th man in seeing us safely home and having a nice run in the cup. Let’s turn SJP into the fortress that it once was. And lets enjoy being back in the big league.

Spot on!!! I have not heard any of the fans with unrealistic targets for this season. I think one thing that has been wrong so far though is I don't think Ashley has properly backed Hughton considering the job Hughton did last season. HWTL!!!!

Good post, but I feel we can do better than 15th, Realistically I think something like 12th is attainable this year. I think the quality of the Premier League has dropped off a little bit since we were last in Prem, and had we been in the prem last season we would've been almost guaranteed safety. There's still alot of players in our squad that were there in 08-09, and we've gotten rid of the cancers like Owen, Nzogbia, and Martins who never put it all out there. I think we have a decently talented side and i'm excited for the match @ Old Toilet hopefully we can steal a point like our last visit.

Good post, well said. We have possibly the best fans in the country, turning up in numbers regardless of where the club is, or who we are playing (cept MA probably kept a few out with his actions some time ago), but still...

What are your thoughts on your owner, he seems to be more low key, is he any more popular now?

Posted by CH on 08/04/2010

Big fan from the states, I'm a little too young to remember the glory days. But the support the boys had during last season was incredible. Chris deserves the chance to take this team as far as they can go. The big thing is WE HAVE TO HOLD ON TO ANDY CARROLL! This kid has IT. 12th place is the mark

You won't be trounced at Old Trafford. But you WILL be trounced at Anfield.
Cheers!

PS: Great respect for Newcastle fans but I was delighted when you lot went down last time. Michael Owen.

lots of respect for newcastle. Still think the best is yet to come from them and ive always rated them as one of the biggest clubs in england even when they were in division 1.. Finishing last season with 100+ points shows that they dint deserve to be there. Hopefully their fans will get the success they deserve soon

Well said son, your comments are spot on especially the bit about the Southern press and their perennial mischief making,Hughton definitely deserves a chance he's done more for this club than Souness, Allerdyce and Keegan (second stint) did between them.

New Castle United has been a favorite club of mine since the Alan Shearer days as a player. I am from the United States and I applaud all the New Castle fans that fill SJP day in and day out. They are a terror to any club entering those grounds. We have shed the fat from our club (Given, Duff, Emre, Owen, Martins, Milner), the true warriors fill the NUFC kits. I think we could do way better than 12th place, we don't fear any one in the EPL. Come Aug 16 is on! Fear the TOON ARMY!!!

Posted by T on 08/04/2010

I expect relegation. That's a very realistic expectation.

I am one of those who did not want Hughton. It would be idiotic to replace him now, but I have seen little to indicate that he has any of the qualities required to cut it in the Premier League. He is a glorified coach and an Ashley yes-man whose "accomplishments" consist of winning the 2nd division with a team of 1st division players. A bag of rocks could have done the same job.

We are still held in the iron grip of a fat cockney who intends to squeeze NUFC for all of the profit possible. We are not going to be ran as a football club hoping to progress; we are going to be ran as a business hoping to turn a profit and cling to our top-flight status.

Our squad remains plagued by utterly useless "footballers" such as R. Taylor, Shola, Barton, Smith, and new addition Best, who are not fit to be PL squad players, but who are considered starters.

NUFC needs its legion of fans more than ever, because the fans are all we have left.

Come on the Toon Army! Chris Hughton deserves our support for a great job last season. We should be patient with the Manager but expect nothing less than total commitment from the lads this season. They will know better than anyone how great it is to be playing top-flight football having tasted the indignity of Championship football with the likes of Plymouth Argyle.

Posted by ToonMickey on 08/04/2010

Great blog to get the message out on behalf on misunderstood NUFC fans. No-one sees it as a God given right to be in Europe, which can be proven from our fanatical attendances in the Championship. Would settle for 17th place on goal difference, so long as we stay up and let Hughton build from there...

Great post mate. Very enlughtening. Living over seas and watching a lot of English football, the media often presents Newcastle fans just as you say here, without much in the way of actual statement from fans, so it was very refreshing to read the thoughts of a true Newcastle man for a change.

Personally, I have never been affronted to Newcastle, and I think the Premier League was worse off not having them last season. Their fans are indeed very patient, and if there is unrest, I think it is more than justified, considering the money, time and effort so many of the fans have put into their club. To pack out SJP in the second division is a truly great achievment. Outside of United (who despite being portrayed as the club of choice for the "glory hunter" has a fiercely loyal fan base within Manchester, where it counts) and Liverpool, I can't think of many other clubs in England whose fans would turn out in that number in that league.

Posted by dmville on 08/05/2010

Newcastle have gone through good and bad seasons in the pasts but hey, when it comes to loyalty, newcastle fans are second to none

Bring it ON!

But letz be honest, i dont think chris can be the man bringing us forward, he's not as aggressive and not as smart as the rest of the mgrs out there in the EPL. With due respect to him and newcastle fc (im an ardious NFC fan too!!), I tink we can keep chris for awhile 1st, afterall, he's the one who pulled us up from div 1, players and staff mus've loved him.. Then if he dint fare well 1st season then another mgr should be brought in..

Keep him just for the sake that he's gone thru what other ex gaffer dint...

Posted by krazyozy on 08/05/2010

nicely put. however i don't think there is any thing wrong in demanding for better. 15th would be good but i'm hoping for 12th. Chris has done what no manager since Robson, unite the team & i think in a way its better that we don't have any big name players, no big egos to distract & disrupt. look at teams like Fulham & Stoke. but we need a bit more talent at the back if are to comfortably stay away from the relegation zone, coz we all know the quality of attack in the prem league is lot diff to the champ & our back line is still the same from 2yrs ago, minus a few. we will also need a few more attacking options to break into the top half, but that's for next yr. this yr is to build confidence for the players & the supporters. we will win a trophy one day & i for 1 am ready to wait as long as the players show passion & desire to do well & not play to get paid & as if it's a 9-5 desk job. go nufc go...

15th?? are you kidding me. no way. realistically NUFC should aim to win the championship next season.
hope the game against NUFC will be a good warm up for the young guns at united.

Fan from Singapore. Supported NUFC since the golden days of '95-'96. Les Ferdinard, Faustino Asprilla, David Ginola, Kieth Gillespie... Yup, let's not be too quick to change a good manager. Give Hughton a few seasons...

Glad to have you back in the top flight. We'll take the easy points though!

Ha'way the lads! I thought the Toon were gan stay doon last campaign, but we fought tooth and nail every match. I expect the same from this years lads. Not expectin a particularly high finish, just safety from relegation!

Posted by Andy Koh on 08/06/2010

NUFC fan from Singapore since 1996.

Great team. I wish them all the best!

We can beat any team on our best day. We just need to out-score them!

Posted by SuperStew on 08/06/2010

I'm not sure Hughton has what it takes to keep us up. Campbell was the first interesting signing he's made and even then, he's a backup for a Premiership team at best. The rest of the signings seem to be cheap buys to consolidate as a yo-yo team, rather than as a team trying to anchor themselves in the top division. Hughton seems to be able to get the team to win the games we're supposed to win, but do we really believe he has the tactical chops to secure points from tough games? Those last few points we'll likely need for safety? Are these signings what we need to win at home against Stoke rather than draw? Or fight for a draw at Birmingham rather than just conceding a loss? That's the sort of stuff we'll need to do if we can expect 12th. I, personally, expect a battle for survival. With the health of Jonas and the progress of our back 4 of particular importance. Our centerbacks still looked awfully shaky back there even in games we dominated...

Wow thanks for all of the responses from all corners of planet earth!
I think the majority are in agreement as to how we will do - and I also see the points of this who think that we can achieve more and those of you who think we have a real fight on our hands. What I would say is that the constant changing of managers over the years has not helped us - thats not to say if next season is a disaster that we should blindly stay with Chrissy - but lets give him a chance and I reckon he genuinely is the man for the job. Once or twice last season he displayed a good tactical mind with some of his in game tactical switches. He has not spent big because he does not have the money to spend big - hence our silly low bit for ben Arfa.
Also, for those of you a long way from Newcastle - Twitter is a great resource for keeping up to date with all things NUFC - 2nd only to Soccernet.
Keep the Faith!

Fans from Singapore since 1994!! Still remember the 5-0 scoreline against Man-U with Ginola in a sensational form, I still have the newspaper cuttings! Frankly speaking, I was happy that we went down to the Championship last year, thought it was necessary for the club to wake up and shed away the big egos. But was sad also that the club has to come to that stage to realise it. I was pleasantly surprise that we won the Championship and Chris totally exceed my expectation. Now we are back, it will be good if we can achieve a 12th position, I won't mind 15th either. We should really gave Chris at least 2 season and see how things develop. All the way lads!!! More to come!

Although CH is really a glorified coach, the fact is he has the players' and the majority of the fans' respect. There was a phrase being thrown around last season that anyone could have gotten Newcastle up, given the quality in the team (at least at Championship level) and for the most part playing lesser opposition. That's crap! Morale was shot, players didn't believe in themselves or their teammates, and an entire city was devastated. Hughton had a big job on his hands and he did it admirably. I respect the way he handles himself and he gets right into the matches, he's always jumping about on the touchline. So having said all that, Hughton deserves a chance without a doubt! Worst comes to worst, he gets sacked and we hire Kevin Keegan again. Kidding!

Posted by Ahmad Azahari on 08/18/2010

Fans from Malaysia since 1994!!bring back King Keegan, we really need the legend to get everything in shape....to CH, thanks a lot to bring back us to the TOP..............We can beat any team on our best day. We just need to out-score them!
