The past month has been a roller coaster ride for Milan fans - to say the least. When we all thought Milan's transfer campaign would quietly close with the signing of Boateng, Berlusconi threw us a curveball by acquiring two world class players in Robinho & Ibrahimovic. Some call them the new Zlatman and Robin, I like to call them..... the Milacticos.
Think of it as the Galacticos light. Berlusconi changed the face of the team without spending a quarter billion € for anybody with a name, or cool hair (Ronaldo). Milan paid half price for players who were valued at astronomically high figures only a few years ago.
So why did Berlusconi suddenly push the transfer market into fifth gear? Why did an organization that has been frugal in recent years decide to finally splurge in such a short period of time? From what I've heard, it was Berlusconi's son's who didn't want their father to keep losing so much money with the team. They wanted to treat it solely as a profitable business. Galliani even said in a video interview a month ago that Milan would only buy a 'big' if they sold a 'big.' Somewhere along the line in the past few weeks, the Italian Prime Minister decided to take matters into his own hands. Did it have something to do with Milan drawing Real Madrid & Mourinho in the Champions League group table? Did Berlusconi cringe at the idea of seeing "The Special One" embarrass the rossoneri? Or did it have something to do with Moratti's yellow toothed grin after winning the treble? You see, Inter has always been the second team in Milan. Berlusconi knows that, Milan fans know that. It's almost an unwritten rule. The thought of "the most Trophied team in history" taking a backseat to Intergentina is one that led to the inevitable Milacticos revolution.

Random Notes on Milan-Auxerre:
- The first meeting against the French side Auxerre became another tale of two halves. The first half saw Milan playing their predictable, somewhat uninspired game that was present also last weekend in the 2-0 loss to Cesena. Then, the circus began in the second half.
- Consensus around Europe is that Ibrahimovic doesn't shine in the Champions League. Today's effort will hopefully be the foundation which slowly changes the publics perception about him. The second of his two goals was an absolutely fantastic finish. I would post a clip but YouTube has been removing all the highlight videos faster than you can say Papastathopoulos. (EDIT: Highlight Here)
- As always, Ronaldinho was the orchestrator of our goal scoring opportunities. I've always felt that his passing abilities have been underrated because people tend to focus primarily on his flamboyant dribbling. He is an absolutely terrific playmaker, and deserves the credit for most of our goal scoring opportunities..
- Boateng was a superb addition to the midfield. He came in for the injured Ambrosini in the 15th minute and assisted one of the goals to Ibrahimovic. His strong physique, work rate, and speed in the midfield is a welcome addition, especially when Slowdorf and Pirlo (FIFA Sprint Speed: 0) are together alongside him.
- I like to call Robinho a 'playstation player'. Someone who dazzles you with a slew of tricks you'd never expect to see outside of a Joga Bonito commercial. With him, Ronaldinho, Zlatan, and Pato, is this the most exciting attack in the world? Never mind how effective they'd be together. The 2006 Brazil World Cup team tried their own fabulous 4 formation and it backfired terribly. When Milan doubled up their score against Auxerre, the circus of technique began. These are the moments in the game I look forward to the most.
Players who departed:
- Wishing the best of luck to Marco Borriello and Klaas Jan Huntelaar, who were the sacrificial lambs of Berlusconi's master plan. Borriello is now Roma's starting target striker, and Huntelaar pairs up with Raul to lead the Shalke frontline.
Negatives:
- One could argue that Berlusconi focused too much on spectacular football and not enough on the defense. Actually, it's not even an argument - it's a fact. If either Nesta or Silva goes down with an injury, Milan has some real issues. Oh wait, both of them have gone down in the past week! Against Cesena, the Greek Sokratis was brought on to take Nesta's place (who was resting for the CL game) and displayed some atrocious defensive positioning skills. The most evident can be seen with Cesena's second goal.
- If Daniele Bonera is starting in central defense, there's a good chance the opposing team will find a few good scoring opportunities, even if they're a mediocre Ligue 1 club like Auxerre - as witnessed today.
- Having Nesta or Silva out ruins the entire chemistry of our defense. Pairing up Nesta with Bonera/Sokratis/Yepes is like pairing up a Filet Mignon with a bag of Fritos. It's an awkward mixture which would undoubtedly ruin the feast. The Filet Mignon needs to be partnered with a fine glass of Tuscan Wine. Nesta needs to be partnered with Silva. End of story.

Totally agree with these article!!
Milan need some decent defender, at least to backup nesta and silva!!

yupz... i agree with you, previous season had shown us enough that milan was a great team, only if played full-team, we've seen what happened when one of nesta, thiago, or pato absence... no worriying bout forward now, but central defence is so worriying... T_T, get well soon thiago silva....

Thumbs up for this article, I will love to see Milan signs top class defenders on january as Nesta reserves, I don't know if Vidic, or Vermalen are available, but milan desperate to have the likes of these type of players.

Thanks Matteo. I thought Bonera played well today against Auxerre. Much better at CB than FB. His aggressive tackle started the counter for the 2nd goal.
Ibra was good, Dinho was great in the 2nd half, and Boateng was awesome! This is the Milan that I expect to see for the rest of the year!!

A great article!! I do think however that we all should be giving Papa some break. I totally understand the critic he is exposed to. I saw the match and he really looked displaced on the pitch (more than a couple of times). Nonetheless, it was his first match and we know what he is able to do defensively. I see a bright future for this kid,I have followed him some time now and I am certain he will be an important player for us in the future. Let's just enjoy this victory! Forza Milacticos!!

Spot on dear Matteo, unfortunately I could not see the game because here in Singapore they prefer to show the replay of West Brom vs Pincopallino rather than showing Italian teams in the Champions league. Nevertheless I read that somehow Boateng managed to turn things around when he came in,which is a good thing. Nobody doubts about the huge qualities of Dinho as a goalscoring chances provider. So why do we need to add Pirlo and Seedorf who are kind of same in that sense? We have quality upfront, we need muscles in the middle to cover our defense, because if our opponents can counterattack without interference from midfielders,it is very tough for the back fours and I know what I am talking about beeing myself a central defender and coach (still today at my old age). Flamini and Boateng should start with either Pirlo or Seedorf on a turnover basis or even with the Fab four why not? Then it is time to integrate the likes of Strasser and Merkel to grow them some hair in their baby face.

Continue.
Anyway a good win yesterday for the moral and for the continuation in this competition. I never tried filet mignon with bag of fritos LOL, but that sound quite disgusting, you should try my receipe with cream and morel mushrooms, that would be the equivalent of our much regretted "Saracinesca" Baresi, Costacurta, Tassotti & Maldini....
Forza Milacticos

Matteo you know I'm not going to disagree with a call for more D. We were lucky Aux wasn't able to capitalize on some of the backlines mishaps.
For me Prince Boateng was man of the match. Nothing away from Ibra's goals (and I agree the 2nd was a tremendous finish) or 'dinho's passes but until Boateng entered Milan was having a lot of difficulty transitioning the ball from the backline to the forwards. Boateng's pace, strength, and awareness with his runs (very impressed with his long run to make that 1st goal happen) turned this game around after the 1st half.
Anyone else notice the forwards are playing more D under Allegri? Against Cessena you saw Robinho back in ACM's box covering. Against Aux we routinly saw Ibra coming back and even witnessed a nice tackle behind midfield from 'dinho.

sad Milan fans, they forget they just lost to Cessena, ya Cessena last weekend. 4 wonderful attackers that do not want to defend.

Good for Milan, I used to follow them very closely from around 2002 but haven't recently so to see them make a few big purchases shows ambition. I hope they really push Inter for the Serie A title this season. BTW Milan couldn't afford Vermalean, he'd cost more than they have paid for Robinho and Ibrahimovic (well until they decide to buy him outright and pay back the massive fee they will owe).

Matteo,
Again great article.
I feel that Milan should have included Mexes as part of the Borriello deal. I mean he is no Nesta or Silva but i believe he is better than Sokratis. What do you think?

Yea, nice write up as usual. Matteo, this story about Nesta being out for a month? hope its not true. And this Papa... Greek guy cant the name be shorten. Or is only Brazilians that shorten their names.

spot on. though i dont agree with the signing of robinho, at least milan is back and gona show the rest of the world we are not out yet.
to be honest, getting a big name defender seems to be the piroty, but what i really want to see is milan youngsters staking a claim for 1st team action, i really do wana see another maldini baresi popping out and continue what maldini has left behind.
matteo, do u think we will get the chance to see this happening?
that said i miss billy maldini baresi albertini!

I've been a Milan fan for 20 years and for the first time since 07 I feel pride in the jersey again, we need one more FB remember Antonini is right footed so can play on either flank he's just on the left to do the running that Ronaldinho can't? Bring on Strasser and Merkel too. We are a work in progress and the next three years should be succesful!!! Forza Milan...

Another great article Matteo!! I agree with all the great things said about Boateng. He looked fabulous. He's a good all around midfielder worked hard on both sides of the field. Sadly, I just don't think Ambrosini can fit in with this team anymore. I think he needs to be replaced in the starting 11, but I don't think that will happen since he's captain. It was also good to see seedorf back again because I think his absence was the reason for the loss against Cesena. FORZA MILANACTICOS!!!

Posted by Jomo on 09/17/2010
I agree with Mike about the American guy Onyewu. He had a very good game against England in the World Cup. Why did Matteo not mention him in this article? And why is he not on our Champs League squad, is he injured again?
Another thought, I do think that Thiago Silva is being wasted at the back, I mean with his qualities (long range passing, tireless running, ferocious shot and an ability to get past an opponent) I think he can be the best midfielder in the world. Imagaine a midfield consisting of T. Silva, Pirlo and Boateng. I know that we need to get a defender first before he can move to the midfield but I think it's an experiment worth trying after the January transfer window.

Matteo:
We're almost there. I agree on the front line with Roni/Pato/Ibra/Robi/Pippo/Verdi. Milan will be a threat to behold. At the same time, whose going to be running back? Against Auxere we were lucky that they didn't score on that counter consisting the lack of speed we have. Still, our problems stems in getting the right formation that will enable a good part of the team to come back and play defense. Which brings me to the main issue of defense. Milan's blood/DNA has always been the wall and spectacular defense that we possesed. Nesta/Zambro are the last old guard in that category. I think Antonini can be a new hier but he needs more games. Silva is good when he's with Sandro but get's lost when he's not there. We need a solid centerback, rightback, and creative midfeilder. Once the defense and midfield is totally fixed then taking Scudetto and CL#8 will be no problem.

Good view on our defense Matteo.
I dont know why we are not bringing back Astori to the team. Last season he had one or two bad games but overall i think he did good! I havent seen him played this season yet but from what i've heard he has been the STAR player for Cagliari for the last two games. Galliani should really try to bring him back in January. And what happened to the Bocchetti deal? It seemed like a done deal at one point and all of a sudden it just vanished into thin air.
Another area where i would love to see Galliani address is without a doubt out Midfield. I must say, it seems as tho Pirlo is starting to find his range again, BUT the question is, for how long? There is one particular person that comes to mind and his name is Andrea Poli! A great Young ITALIAN talent who can be groomed very well into this milan side. He maybe be a natural replacement for Pirlo.
Matteo
What are your thoughts on these three prospects-Davide Astori, Salvatore Bocchetti and Andrea Poli?
 |
Posted by Matteo Bonetti on 09/17/2010
@punditguy
I'd love for Milan to bring in Poli and Astori. As for Bocchetti, he's never really blown me away the times I have seen him. Maybe I've just seen him at all the wrong times.
@Jomo
I didn't mention Onyewu because he's not on the CL roster. He's still recovering from his injury and from what I've heard, he's not at 100% yet. He deserves an opportunity whenever the training staff deems him to be fully fit.
@TheMan
Mexes is a red card threat every time he is on the field.. A few fantastic defensive plays are countered by one boneheaded foul which jeopardizes the teams hopes of keeping 11 men on the field.
@Milan1963
Now that Ambrosini is out, our midfield will most likely look like this: Pirlo, Boateng, Flamini. Or at least those are the three I'd put in.
 |
Posted by punditguy on 09/17/2010
@Matteo.
Yeah im not to sure about him Bocchetti either. And ypur comments on our midfield in the above statement, I have been saying this since before we evel signed Zlatman and Robin....we should start Flamini, Pirlo and Boateng! I would love to see that line up!

Regarding the "why did Berlusconi push the transfer market market into fifth gear", don't discount the additional dynamic of dropping poll numbers and a maneuver to recapture/gain political support in the peninsula. Signing marquee players bodes well for perception even if there are other areas better addressed (FB, MF, etc.) He is the prime minister after all...

Ciao MB! As an avid Selecao fan I'm supercilious happy with R80. He's still the best player in the world. The way he creates chances and passes is unbelievable. Xavi and Fab are haussed as genius but non of the are comperable with the king. As for the team I don't see any chances for the Scudetto nor the CL. Maybe the Coppa Italia but nothing more then that. The goalies are superb and Abbiati is still a worldclass shotstopper and always delivers. Amelia is an excellent back-up and I hope he can get some more matches specially in the Coppa Italia. But the defence is terrible. Zamb is a Zombie and should've retired several seasons ago just like Oddo. Bonera is up and down and should not be a starter. The wing-backs are to unexperienced and aren't worldclass materials. It's pathetic to see Abate and Antonini fill the shoes of legends like Cafu and Maldini. But they should get excused cuz they're not defenders but wingers/midfielders turned wing-backs.

Montelongo and Sokratis are still young and can still develope, but to to win Scudetto and CL you can’t gamble to play with undeveloped youngsters. You don’t have the time to take risks. As for Yepes he’s good but sadly to slow just like Janku. Why Onyewu doesn’t play is preposterous. Silva and Nesta are excellent and unbeatable as pair but I’ll give Nesta 3-4 matches before he’s injured again. The midfielders are too old and slow and way over the top. Gattuso is useless and ruins more for his own team then the opponents. Pirlo is Pirlo at some times but most of the time he just toddles around and is invisible. Seedorf is still good but sadly sometimes too slow. Ambro is excellent and Boateng is a hot prospect. Why Flamini is never used is just preposterous as Onyeuw. Strasses should play instead of Gattuso.

The attack look superb on the paper but on the pitch they’re just useless as Shaqiulle O’Neills freethrows (He is maybe the most terrible freethrower ever in NBA). Pato is superb at times but too often selfish and tries to dribble to often. At several occasions I’ve seen him try to dribble past 3-4 defenders with easier options like passing to team mate avaible. He is also unconsstnace in front of goal, misses to many chances. Zlatan is known for being a big matches flop and he doesn’t deliver against big teams. Inzaghi is still the best poacher ever but sadly too old. R80 is the best and carries this mediocre Milan team on his Joga Bonito shoulders. I really love to see him play, way beyond any other player. Robinho is garbage, Milan should’ve bought Dos Santos from Tottenham instead. Well I’ll cross my fingers and hope they can play some good football cuz this year will be just like the last 3 years.

I like this article, has a very good point, but Milan need one or two NEW midfielders and a full back, did u see Pirlo and Seedorf against Catania?? Pissed me off, slow as f#$#, and im really really glad we got Prince, he was pretty much playing 3 or 4 positions at a time, covering back for Bonera and Pirlo. I'd like to think that we have the best attack in the world but if the mid-field doesn't click, then all those big names are a waste, and what was with Allegri not playing Robinho against Catania?? ODU before Robinho?????

Im disappointed and disgusted about our draw over the weekend. It was horrible! We did NOT play our game. Its like our tactics was just give the ball to Ibra! Those long passes just didnt cut it! I hated the way we played, our whole game plan for that game! We played the entire game looking like we were desperate! Where were our knocks? Where was the patient beautiful passing game we usually play?!?!? And what was that about playing two CF? Inaghi and Ibra from the start made no sense at all! Many parts of the game they were canceling each other out and getting in each other's way! that was just not smart.
The only positive from the game was Boateng! He was just wonderful to watch! I honestly think from now on he will be a VERY important piece in out midfield! He was all over the field. I like the intensity he plays with! He give us Milan fans something to cheer about!
I hope todays game is better and i hope to see Ronaldinho Ibra and Robinho at the start this game!
FORZA MILAN!!!!!

The coach must sit up. We as a team are too unpredictable that its funny. Why cant we beat teams such as Cessena and Catania, and Lazio. The coach either perform with these players or leave. We are in no position to sign players now since the window is closed. He must draft players into positions and use Kelvin as a Utility Player. Milan cant be Inter's puppet. It has always been the other way round and the status co must remain. Forza Milan

i think we have acquired all the best players so we should sit up and stop blaming coaches.i will also suggest that we get a new goalkeeper

I completely agree with everything that everyone is saying but i'm still completely stunned that Robinho isn't starting or Inzaghi! I mean he has 2 goals now but that only because of ronaldinho brilliance. Ronaldinho makes those goals happen for Inzaghi. I can understand Boateng starting but I still havent been to impressed with him in all the games either like against Lazio, I didn't like what I saw. I'm eagerly anticipating the return of Pato from his injury but until then, we need to find something that works and so far we haven't We have drew and lost to some bad teams (Cesena, Catania, etc.) and it kills me to watch it with all the talent we have. I want to see a 4 man front with Ibra and Ronaldinho playing center forwards, Pato and Robinho playing wings. It would be unbeatable, the central defenders would have to mark ronaldinho and ibra with atleast 2 on each. So 2 players occupying 4 defenders. That creates so much opportunity for Milan to create plays and score

I was disappointed with the Catania and Lazio results this week. I think our defense is fine more or less, and you can see with the attack having Ibra up front was a good move but our midfield is where the crises lies. Boatneg is our only player that can produce pace and creativity. Gattusso is looking like the old Rino but Seedorf and Pirlo are just way to slow. Pirlo just infinitly crosses the ball to no avail at times. Seedorf and Pirlo dribble the ball up field and by the time they deliver to Roni or Ibra all of Lazio/Catania is waiting in the back for them. Which is almost impossible to break when these small teams start playing Catenaccio. Our problems are really in MF. We can have Sergio Ramos and Maxwell in the back but if we have no speed in the MF who really cares if we even have Ibra or CR9 up front! No pace equals no finish. At the January window, Silvio needs another MF to pair up with Flamini/Boatneg. If we get speed back then Scudetto/CL sounds very promising.

@Desilolla
You were corrent on most your points except the 'Robinho is garbage.' While I do think he has always been slightly overrated as a player, he can deliver some excellent moments when you least expect it. For some reason he shines on the Brazilian NT but fails to replicate that immense quality with clubs. I really hope he finds a way to influence the team and become a major factor.
 |
Posted by Rodger on 09/24/2010
Either Seedorf or Pirlo needs to sit. To play them both is madness. This is Milan's main problem, why are they playing with 3 (including Ronaldinho) playmakers who never track back? There is only one ball, they don't need three players who are useless without it at their feet. Until Pato and Ambrosini are back play Ibra and Pippo up front with Ronnie on the left and two of Boateng, Gattuso or Flamini in midfield with either Seedorf or Pirlo. NEVER both together. I've seen ever Milan game this year including their preseason, and IMO Pirlo is the one who should sit, he is clearly over the hill. Replace him with Flamini and maybe other teams couldn't counter so easilly. Sell him to Chelsea in January, Carlo still thinks he can play.
 |
Posted by paul on 09/25/2010
I really do not get why they have not revamped this MF. The problem is there. Focus on DEFENSE, prevent counters, play the ball up fast to the forwards. Watching Gattuso, Pirlo, Dorf and Ambro get caught upfield is tiring. They can't do it anymore and add very little offensively.
Start Robinho on the right!
Have some nuts Allegri. You need to sit most of the old midfielders! Boateng and Flamini need to be regular starters.
On Ronaldinho...I admire his skill and quite frankly most of the offense comes through him. I can go on, he's brilliant. but as a Ronnie fan the guy has to start running harder. he looks in shape, I don't get why he's relaying on passing the ball back or long passes. Take the ball and run hard at defenders. Any clue why he doesn't do this anymore? Lazy? Out of shape? Lack of confidence? No legs anymore?
Anyway...my lineup most night would be:
Antonini-Nesta-Silva-Bonera(Abate)
Flamini-Pirlo-Boateng
Ronnie-Ibra-Robinho(Pato)
Later

Why does Allegri make his subs so late in the game? Inzaghi should have replaced Robinho much earlier in the Ajax game. He was brought on in the 85th minute while it was clear the Ajax defense was shaky when the strikers were playing off their shoulder. It was crying out for SuperPippo to step in!
 |
Posted by Anonymous on 09/30/2010
Allegri needs to get familiar with the team and individual players. Pirlo is getting weaker by the day, thatis why the team finds it difficult to control games and keep leads.I suggets Seadorf shouold be tried in that position alongside boateng and flamini(Gattuso)

So there is some word circulating that Milan may try to sign Gerrard in January. I know these are just rumors and MAYBE very unlikely but the idea of him joining Milan would certainly make me the most happiest Milan fan around! Im not a big fan of english players but i really really do like Gerrard! In fact he is one of my top 5 favorite players!
Pirlo and Seedorf cant make a full 90 and have lost there pace. With Gerrard and Boateng and Flamini i really do think our Midfield would be complete. I know signing Andrea Poli would be much more realistic and better for long term and future but i would love to see Gerrard at Milan!!!!!

as an american i feel that this could be onyewu's last season with milan, which can be seen as a double edged sword since it is a great advantage to have him in a big club, but what good is it if he doesn't even get to play. maybe they could loan him out to a smaller serie a outfit. i look at it one way...if we can have american players playing in any of the big four leagues in europe, it's good for american international soccer.
 |
Posted by Rodger on 10/04/2010
Where is Onyewu? Right where he belongs, sitting in the stands and watching. He is so far from being Serie A class never mind Milan. Why he was ever signed I don't know, but he should be back in a lower level league. The only thing he has going for him is size. He is dreadfully slow, can't jump, and worst of all has absolutely no idea of proper positioning.

@Punditguy
My vote for goal of the year. Also the #1 video on youtube at the moment. What an absolutely stunning strike.

About
Born and raised just a few kilometers away from The San Siro, Matteo Bonetti has been watching the Rossoneri ever since childhood. The passion was instilled by a family whose fanaticism for the team dates back to the early 1900's. Instead of bursting with an obscenity laden tirade, or turning any object around him into a projectile weapon after a disappointing Milan outing, Matteo can now channel his emotions into a more effective, and most importantly: safe, manner - writing on a global platform. He is a young journalist whose grandfather was the Vice President of Milan nearly four decades ago. E-mail him: themilanguy@gmail.com, and follow him on twitter: @TheMilanGuy
