Each year as the season comes to an abrupt end, the transfer rumor mill goes into fifth gear. It's a rather annoying period. A time where nearly every player is linked to several hundred teams. A time where fans argue with each other, disputing the legitimacy of each article released by websites starving for attention.

This year Milan finished third in the Serie A, guaranteeing them a spot in the Champions League. Most fans (myself included) are quick to bash Berlusconi, urging the owner to sell the very team he helped guide to elite status. After all, we support a team that proudly labels itself as "La squadra piu titolata", the team with the most trophies. Yet after a few years of no silverware, fans bring anti-Berlusconi/Galliani ads to the San Siro, and whistle management mercilessly. These loyal supporters craving for trophies are comparable to a drug addicts craving for cocaine.

Right now, we're all in somewhat of a metaphorical withdrawal period. Milan fans who are Italian experienced the absolute apex of sports joy - a Milan Champions League final win over rivals Liverpool AND Italy winning the World Cup over the French, all within a one year span! Fast forward three years later and we see a struggling Milan side searching for an identity. Even when things went well this year, there was always something missing. Almost a feeling of hopelessness, a feeling that we've become a sell-first team who cannot seriously compete for a trophy on the European stage. For the first time in my lifetime, Milan took a backseat to Inter.

You see, Inter was always the team us Milanisti could make fun of. This was a team that for whatever reason, had a four decade dry spell. We would always taunt our friends who supported Inter, gleefully comparing our Champions League success with their perennial woes. They were the team that couldn't get it done in Europe, the "other" team from Milano. Inter were infamous for ruining elite players and aiding us in the process. No situation is more evident than this one: Inter sent us Andrea Pirlo and Clarence Seedorf for Francesco Coco, who subsequently suffered from a serious case of Shevchenkonitis (an unknown disease that strikes a world class player in his prime, inexplicably rendering him useless.) Inter bought a Brazilian defender from Palmeiras when he was 23 years old, decided after a season that he was dispensable, and sold him to Real Madrid where he went on to become one of the greatest left backs in history. Does the name Roberto Carlos ring a bell?

So why is all of this so depressing? Inter seems to have traded places with AC Milan of the early 2000's. They stock quality players at nearly every position, and spend lavishly to bring in Champions. Unfortunately the results were evident this year with their treble. Milan on the other hand, seems to have become a glorified version of Udinese. Unless the president decides to splurge money on a superstar, our transfer patterns are mimicking those of small provincial sides. Galliani has recently said that Milan will buy a world class player for the right price*. <-- Note the asterisk

*The right price meaning €900,000 for a 34 year old Colombian defender.

So far, the rumor mill has teased us with "Ibrahimovic to Milan" rumors. Those were hastily nullified by his pudgy little agent Mino Raiola, who has claimed that the Serie A is no place for a superstar such as Ibra. I'm not even going to waste time retorting the ridiculousness of that past statement.

Future Milan Striker? Not According To His Agent ©AP

Borriello has been linked to about fifty teams. Since 99.9% of transfer rumors never materialize, I wouldn't worry too much about him departing this summer.

Fact #1: Leonardo is gone. His temporary spell at Milan showed that he has a promising future in the game, but just not now.
Speculation #1: The primary candidate to take over is former Cagliari boss Massimilano Allegri, who was voted as 2008's top Serie A Coach.
Speculation #2: The second candidate is Milan assistant Filippo Galli.

Random Notes:

- Two players who provided us with countless comedy this year are leaving Milan. Dida played his last game for Milan against Juventus a few weeks ago. At one time considered one of the worlds finest shot stoppers, his career reputation spiraled downwards after strings of bizarre moments/accidents.

Dida was never the same after this punishing blow. ©AP

Bizarre Incident #1: During a heated derby, Dida was struck in the head by a rocket propelled Firework.

Bizarre Incident #2: He became the first player in the history of soccer to injure himself while sitting on the bench. He severely strained his back after bending down to grab something, and had to be carted off the field.

Bizarre Incident #3: Against Celtic, a Scottish fan ran onto the pitch, and merely caressed Dida's face. The slight contact caused Dida to tumble to the ground and lay dead as if a Sniper had shot him.

Bizarre Incident #4: Champions League. Santiago Bernabeu. Milan vs. Real Madrid. What turned out to be the most entertaining game of the year, also had one of the most epic goalkeeping errors of all time.

Needless to say, we'll miss Nelson Dida. He provided us with a Champions League trophy, and plenty of unintentional comedy.

- Favalli also played his last game for Milan and decided to start collecting his pension. He will be remembered for being torched by Antonio Valencia in the Champions League against Manchester United. Then again, what type of velocity can you expect from an athlete who has arthritis in both his knees? Regardless, the ageless wonder valiantly attempted to fill in for Nesta this year. Let's move on..

Milan Players in the World Cup:

Andrea Pirlo - Italy: The undisputed regista for the Italian National team. He actually plays better for Italy than for his club. Reason could be that he is often deployed in a more advanced role behind the strikers rather than in front of the defense.

Marco Borriello - Italy: Fighting for the vice-Gilardino role alongside Pazzini. In my opinion, Borriello is a more complete striker than Gilardino. Having watched both extensively, I'm curious to get my readers opinion on the matter as well.

Gianluca Zambrotta - Italy: Another bizarre call by Lippi. Luca Antonini was much more impressive than the old right back this year.

Gennaro Gattuso - Italy: Consensus around the National Team shows that the snarling dog was brought on simply for his personality. There is no doubt Ambrosini was much more effective this year, but apparently Lippi thinks Gattuso's leadership qualities and fire are a necessity.

Thiago Silva - Brazil: The Brazilian squad is sure to employ a central defense pair consisting of Juan and Lucio, so Silva will be used as a backup.

Klaas-Jan Cobra Huntelaar - Netherlands: The only true "target" man called up to the Dutch side means the Cobra will get a chance to strike on the world stage.

Oguchi Onyewu - USA: Got a chance to see him play for 65 minutes in a friendly against the Czech Republic. Obviously a bit out of sync, I'll be curious to see how he performs in South Africa. His experience and talent makes him the top USA defender, but lack of playing time might see him take a less coveted backup role.

Dominic Adiyiah - Ghana: The hardest name I've ever had to spell. Are we sure he exists? I have never seen any pictures of him at Milan.

Well, an entire season has passed since I started writing this column. I want to thank all of my readers who have continually supported my writing and the ones who took the time to leave comments after every post. Your input makes writing these articles much more enjoyable.

Really nice article. I share the same thoughts as you, although I am quiet relieved that Dida is no longer our goalkeeper. Dida wasn't that steady, you know.

Ow, and about Ibra. Galliani said that Ibra isn't allowed to return to Italy next season because of a clause in his contract. BTW, I don't see a big star coming to Milan this summer. Like every year..

Ciao :)

Good article. With regards to borriello and gilardino, I like our boy Marco in the run of play, and he can produce the more spectacular goal, but he misses too many easy chances. He can be a very exciting player to watch, but he can disappear at times. Gilardino is a straight up finisher, similiar to pazzini. If borriello can finish the easy chances, and gains some consistency to his game, Milan won't need to buy ibra.

By the way, I live in Chicago and I saw our rossoneri train on Friday. It was breathtaking seeing all the players face to face. seeing Pato, seedorf, nests, antonini, abate, even favalli standing inches away from me made me feel like a little kid.. Except oddo, he wasn't exciting to see at all haha

Posted by Milan 1963 on 05/30/2010

Yes Matteo the frustrating period when all our competitors are bringing new exciting players in their squads has started. Unfortunately for us we will read every day someone linked to Milan, but as usual nobody really big will come. Actually I would be quite happy with Allegri as a new coach, he could bring new freshness in the team and give a chance to our youngsters. We need to rebuild from the back and I believe we need at least one solid full back, we should be covered in the center with Nesta, Silva, Yepes and Onyegwu. Abate is not a full back, I would rather have him playing right mid, he can discretly defend but can also go forward and has enough energy to run the entire game. Antonini is good on the other side but we need someone to start on the right. Where we need a star player is in the middle, someone who can win you a game like Kaka. With Huntelaar leaving I would look for this guy that could take over from Pirlo and Seedorf with the help of Ambro and Flamini.

Continue:
We do not need to spend too much for someone like Ibra, I would rather recall Paloschi and give him his chances. Hopefully some of those young players coming from the primavera will also get more chances to show their skills in the big stage. This is how you build for the future, not with waning old stars.
Anyway keep up the good work, I always enjoy reading your column and Forza Italia at the World Cup.

just joined you on twitter - great job, great article.
any prediction of Allegri's gameplay attitude?
regards!

Posted by Matteo Bonetti on 05/30/2010

Milan 1963/ soulmac:

I see the Allegri era at Milan going great. He has a young mentality and plays an extremely offensive formation. To me, the coaches who make their teams overachieve to such an extent are the real experts.

Cagliari played some of the most fluid soccer in the Serie A. They almost reached Europa league status with a subpar roster, and constantly gave headaches to the top Italian sides.

If Allegri does sign there's a chance he might bring in one or two of his favorite ex-cagliari players. Lazzari, Cossu, and Matri are all potential signings, as well as our very own Astori. (who was loaned to Cagliari)

Johnathan Clancy:

Only player I've seen recently is Cannavaro, posted a picture on my twitter if you search around a week ago. And yes I agree, witnessing the legend that is Oddo must be quite anticlimactic.

Nice article

Posted by diego on 05/30/2010

nice article. i pretty glad that dida is leaving, i mean he is a very good goalkeeper and all but he makes to much mistakes. But i really like storari he is pretty nice and he has good reflexes.

Posted by Marco on 05/30/2010

Throughout the year I have read every single one of your articles and was very pleased with the quality of them. I was in Italy for the majority of the summer and for the first few Giornatas and the general outlook on Milan was that they should have been fighting for just a Europa League spot this year so I am happy on that note.
On the transfers this summer, who do you think we have a realistic opportunity to buy with our management issue of not wanting to give any money? Hernanes looks like a great buy that might actually happen who could possibly be the next Kaka but other then that I don't think so. What are your opinions?
Grazie per tutto, Marco

Posted by Matteo Bonetti on 05/31/2010

Marco:

I agree, in the beginning of the year consensus surrounding the Serie A was that Inter and Juve would be the ones fighting for the scudetto.

Berlusconi/Galliani have said that they will purchase a superstar for the right price. The exact details of that right price are unknown. But perhaps somebody like Adebayor (who I think is overrated) could be brought in. If I was management I'd do anything to go after Dzeko and/or a world class right back such as Sergio Ramos. A less glamorous and inexpensive choice would be Palermo's Mattia Cassani.

Posted by RG on 05/31/2010

In regards to Berlusconi, we can not as some fans seem to, always live in the past. Of course he should be praised for what he has done but today he is making the team step back. Even with nice UEFA regulations regarding spending control we still need to spend regularly to compete, the good news is we don't need to spend like Real or Chelsea if we buy the rights players at the right time. For example find a good full back now who can defend and that will make a positive impact even if no other changes are made.

Posted by acmilandrew on 05/31/2010

If we had to come up with Dida comedy moments we'll be here all night. He got ruined in the CL derby and was never the same again.I feel we should scour South America for another Kaka like bargain.By the way we need a trophy...the Italian cup's not looking so bad any more.

Posted by D on 06/01/2010

Thanks for the laughs re: Dida bizarre incidents.
Gilardino over Boriello - Alberto is more consistent. Marco comes up with some flashy goals, but disappears in big games.
Ibra? No thank you. Same for Fabiano. No to Melo.
One world class buy for me would be Gerrard (Cesc is my #1, but he seems set on Barca). Wouldn't comlpain if Dzeko was the buy.
As far as FB (all 4 should be available) in order:
1. Bonnuci (can play on the right)
2. Motta
3. Cassani
4. Drenthe
Ramos would be fantastic, but I don't think you'll get RM to part with him (unless they sign Maicon and maybe consider him excess at that point - not likely though).
Would push for midfielders like Krasic, Silva, Hamsik, and Hernannes.

Posted by Matteo Bonetti on 06/01/2010

D:

Apparently Milan is close to signing Cagliari's creative goal scoring midfielder Andrea Lazzari. This would be one of the more underrated signings in quite a while. He is a great player who has scored some phenomenal goals the past few seasons.

Posted by pragathish on 06/01/2010

Nice article man.For me the future looks not so confident, and I am afraid we'll have to spend yet another season without silverware.Allegri is a good coach, but seriously, for coaching Milan you must have a big team mentality. And expecting this from Allegri will not be so sensible.
But lets see,it all depends on the transfer market, which, again, doesn't look good.

Posted by punditguy on 06/01/2010

Ah yes....Dida, you will surely be missed. I'll never forget the celtic incident. And Mr Favalli, my headaches and migraines are gone with your departure!

I heard some B.S. rumor that Milan are interested in signing F.Cannavaro. Oh boy, the headaches and migraines are back.

Also i looked at some videos of Eder and he seems to be a good player. He has scored some impressive goals. He looks like one of those players who can create goal scoring opportunities and score goals out of nothing. So i wouldnt mind if Milan signs him, and we can get him at a decent price.

Borriello and Pazzini are similar players. So i would choose Gilardino. He is better than Boris in the box.

Burlusconi wants a "BIG NAME" player. He wants to splash the cash for a "BIG NAME" player. But why not take...lets say 50mil, if there is so much and sign some cheaper but good players! Eder 10mil, Krasic 15/20mil, Marchetti 10/15mil. That would make a much more sense to me.

Posted by punditguy on 06/01/2010

One more thing. Why dont we sign De Silvestri? I really like him! He is strong, fast, he can create scoring opportunities and he can DEFEND! At one point Milan were close to signing him and i dont know what happened and he ended up in Fiorentina. Would like to see him in Milan!

Posted by diego on 06/01/2010

I think that milan should get pastore(from palermo)he's young, has nice passing abilities, speed, dribbling skills, creativity and he is just the player that milan needs.

Posted by Matteo Bonetti on 06/01/2010

punditguy:

De Silvestri or Mattia Cassani would be my choices for right back. Young, energetic, and skillful.

diego:

Palermo would definitely be a great signing! He is one of the most promising young players in Europe. Reminds me of a Kaka with more dribbling skill and technique.

Posted by Eduardo on 06/01/2010

We were in the hunt as long as Nesta was fit, when he went down we were a disaster... Nesta is getting old and injury prone, we need to find his replacement to play alongside Silva - and Bonera does not seem to be the answer. Along with obvious weaknesses at LB RB K and a sure fire star to go with Pato... But thank God Favalli is gone - now for Oddo..

Posted by Jason on 06/02/2010

How about another article of purchasing players to revamp the team, but can you do it with under $20 million?

Posted by Pagliuca on 06/02/2010

Frattello!

You're articles were great! I enjoyed them all the time! This season was a rollar coaster! It started low then went up high and back to low. Yes,I admit it would be nice to see a Scudetto or CL trophy back at the Milanello but at the same time we always had players with class and performance. Example being, we needed a defender and got Jap Staam and not a Yepes. I want to see good and smart football being played and us in competition for the titles. Not being odds out underdogs for them. Silvio has the money but his own political and business mishaps caused this and it's being taken out on Milan. If he truely "loved" Milan like he says he does he would find a "way" to get players like Sergio Ramos or David Santon to Milan. Not making signings like Yepes (though he could work out) instead. Furthermore, I'm not searching for trophies or glory but heavily competetive football and not us fighting a place with relegation. I'm hoping that Allegri will find sucess but Silvio..

Posted by diego on 06/02/2010

i think milan should get rid of flamini, oddo, bonera and we should loan abate to a smaller team so he could devolope more.i think milan should get a decent centre back to team up with siliva.

Posted by Pagliuca on 06/02/2010

Part II....(Silvio) has to start investing in bringing a mix of strong youth players and veterns (a la Barca, Arsenal, or Juve) that will make Milan competative and not jokes or sever underdogs. I don't think Milan need to have a Real Madrid, Inter, or Chelsea transfer policy but they need to bring in some qaulity to reinenforce key positions that will make them competetive. In other words we need to spend some money to get "some" results. If buying washed up or medicore players is the choice then we'll be known as overachievers instead of favorites and I don't think that's the true Milan way? Your thoughts Matteo?

Posted by Mick on 06/05/2010

Grazie.
I agree that Borriello is a more complete striker than Gilardino but for some reason I trust Gila more with the Azzurri than Marco. I am 17 years old and I remember when I was younger I used to see sheva and Dejan Savicevic. Milan is a different team now and it is sad.

I think the perfect "world class" signing would be Juan Vargas because of his versatility.

Posted by Mick on 06/05/2010

Oh, and Bonucci is the best. he is the next nesta. kjaer is good too

Posted by Mona on 06/07/2010

@Johnathan Clancy: I was also at Chicago. I agree that moment when you realize you are just feet away from Pato, Seedorf, etc. is pretty remarkable. I won't forget it soon.

Mr. Bonetti - will you be updating this column now that we have a final Italian 23? Thanks.

Posted by Matteo Bonetti on 06/08/2010

Mona:

Unfortunately I'm not the Italian National Team correspondent even though that position would sound fun to run. If you follow me on twitter I post thoughts regarding much more than just Milan.

Mick:

Vargas would be an excellent signing but since he is a left sided player, I'm not sure if he'd be the best signing. We desperately need a right back.

Posted by McKinley on 06/09/2010

Great Articles. I love reading your views on ACM. I do have to admit to going thru a little bit of a withdrawl period. I agree we need refreshing, and while splashing the cash would be nice, I don't see it happening. In the area of defence, I can see a full back being found for relatively cheap. Fabio Aurelio on a free, Adriano from Sevilla, or Gonzalo Castro or Marcell Jansen both of the bundesliga. Further up the field it gets a little dicier, bc we don't have a coach. Who know's what he'll want to use. I'd wish we'd make a move for Alessandro Rosina to bring him back from Russia, or Sebastian Giovinco. I have faith in smart, conservative spending. Forza Milan! Thanks - McKinley

Posted by cristian on 06/11/2010

i think milan should get cristiano ronaldo, messi and john terry

Posted by ForzaMilan504 on 06/15/2010

good article, nice read. Around the time D.Beckam arrived@Ac Milan i found that i had a soccer channel that played Serie A games. I knew of Kaka,Dida,Ronaldinho. Hence Ac Milan became and are my soccer team that i really have passion for. We are in transition period. C. Anceloti had a great run with three champions league finals and won two out the three and one League title. World Club champs, i cant believe they allowed liverpool come back in 2005, but that in the past. I think Leonardo did a great job this season as head coach with what he was given to work with. Alot of players past their prime, past their best. We need to get younger and sell are old players. Ac Milan started off slow but getting that 2-1 win over Roma with goal from Ronaldinho and Pato the@Real Madrid winning 2-1, 2 goal from PATO. Selling KAKA and not bringing anyone in hurt alot. We could've gotten Wesley Snieder or Arjen Robben, Higuain, somebody from Real Madrid. Well later we did get da Hunter. FORZAMILAN504
