Milan failed to capitalize on Inter's recent struggles by tying 1-1 against Napoli over the weekend, and losing 1-0 against Parma yesterday. Instead of surpassing Inter and leading the table for the first time this year, we are now tied with Roma for second place (-4 behind Inter). So what went wrong? Why does Milan seem to have such a difficult time against small provincial sides?
A part of it has to do with the Serie A being the toughest league to play in. Now before all you EPL supporters have a heart attack, let me rephrase myself. I'm not saying that it's the BEST league, but definitely the one with the most parity. Results from this year have shown us that any side can defeat another on any given day. We witnessed the relegation all-stars of Catania dominate an Inter side 3-1 (which subsequently went on to defeat Chelsea in the Champions League.) Milan on the other hand, has struggled against nearly every side from the bottom half of the table.
Once again, the problem stems from the lack of depth of the current squad. Milan used to have a team that was overflowing with world class talent. When you stop buying players like Rui Costa, Rivaldo, Nesta, and start importing the likes of Mario Yepes, Abate, and Di Gennaro, our hopes of claiming silverware diminish drastically. Although you have to hand it to Milan for really coming through on their youth movement. Wanting to bring in Mario Yepes from Chievo is a major step in the right direction - replacing a 38 year old Favalli with a Colombian defender who recently turned 34.

It might be the most anticlimactic signing since Ibrahim Ba. In all fairness to Yepes, he has stood out as being a very tough, rugged defender. But Milan need someone like Nemanja Vidic.
I've decided to play Milan Manager. If I was running the club, who would I realistically sign. Let us keep in mind that the club is not run by Florentino Perez, so throwing out lavish sums of money for everyone who has a big name and wears hair gel is wishful thinking at this point.
Goalkeeper
Sell: : Nelson Dida - An expiring contract that costs way too much. Error prone, took goalkeeping lessons from Antonio Chimenti.
Sell: Flavio Roma - Not sure why he was purchased in the first place.
Keep: Cristian Abbiati - Great reflexes but suspect consistency. He would be a great backup, but certainly not starting caliber anymore for a team with Champions League aspirations
Bring Back: Marco Storari - A keeper with superb reflexes who keeps being loaned out every year for reasons unknown. Not good on corner kicks, but has played at a very high level with Sampdoria. I'd be fine with having him as a starter next season.
Buy: Federico Marchetti or Salvatore Sirigu - Both young keepers who have a bright future. I've had a chance to watch both on numerous occasions, and Sirigu could become the next Gigi Buffon.
Defense
Sidenote: To everyone who has been commenting about wanting to bring in Bonucci or Ranocchia - it seems as if both of them have made commitments to Juventus and Inter. It would be highly unfortunate if Milan failed to snap up either of them, as they are young and immensely talented.
Sell: Kakhaber Kaladze - Bad attitude, complains about playing time even though he is a mistake waiting to happen.
Sell: Massimo Oddo - A player who made a name for himself by being an elite crosser, suddenly became the king of unintentional comedy by sailing crosses over the goalpost.
Sell: Marek Jankulovski - Milan were desperate to offload him a few weeks ago, but the Czech wingback rejected an offer to join Inter.
Retire: Giuseppe Favalli - Time for him to collect his pension.
Bought: Mario Yepes - Colombian central defender who would be an able backup to Silva & Nesta. Tough, gritty player who displayed his quality in shutting down Milan's attack a few weeks ago.
Keep: Daniele Bonera - An able backup who can play anywhere on the back line.
Keep: Luca Antonini - Probably our best fullback at the moment. I'd be comfortable with him as our starting left-back next season. Formed a great chemistry with Ronaldinho, an energetic player who loves getting forward.
Loan: Ignazio Abate - World class speed but little of anything else. He is a mistake prone young player who needs more experience before he can claim a Milan starting role. I would loan him out to a smaller Serie A side where he could continue development. Either that or keep him as a back-up.
Buy: Lorenzo De Silvestri - An attacking full back who has displayed his quality for Fiorentina. Young, strong and quick. He showed he can defend the best wingers in the world when he held his own against Bayern Munich covering Franck Ribery.
Buy: Nemanja Vidic - A giant reach. These are the times I dream of having Florentino Perez handling the finances. He is a powerhouse central defender. Nesta is apparently made of paper-mache', so thinking of a defensive pair of Vidic/Silva is mouthwatering.
Bring Back: Davide Astori - Another young, promising Italian defender who has been in co-ownership with Cagliari the past few seasons.
Midfield
Sell: Gennaro Gattuso - A cult hero for Milan Ultras. But this former snarling dog has been reduced to a lumbering puppy. Clumsy challenges, embarrassing lack of technique, and loss of speed have made him virtually nonexistent the times he has been inserted into the starting lineup.
Buy: Yoann Gourcuff - One of my favorite players. Was never given a real chance to prove his worth at Milan. Showed flashes of brilliance on occasion and letting him go to Bordeaux was one of the biggest mistakes Milan have made in quite sometime. He has turned into an elite midfielder who has superb vision and can get forward and score spectacular goals.
Buy: Luca Cigarini - Since my dream of acquiring Gourcuff would never materialize, I'd look for a backup for Pirlo who can be bought at a relatively cheap price. Napoli's Luca Cigarini is a young creative playmaker with an excellent long range shot. Scored a wonderful goal against Milan this season as well.
Keep: Mathieu Flamini - Although he is a red card threat every time he steps on the pitch, and the player most likely to fracture an opponents ankle with dangerous sliding tackles, his aggressiveness and work-rate are impressive. He covers a vast distance on the field and takes pressure off of Pirlo when he is paired with Ambrosini.
Attack
Sell: Klaas-Jan Huntelaar - Touted as a world-class finisher before joining Madrid, he failed to impress there. I had a feeling that Huntelaar was included in the Kaka deal, but since Milan did not want to make it seem as if they were swapping Kaka for Huntelaar, they opted to sign him a month or so later. A decent attacker, but not much more than a substitute for Milan.
Give back: Mancini - An odd acquisition that drew criticism from Silvio Berlusconi. He is out of form, turning 30 this year, and has barely played the past two years. Watching him at Milan, it's apparent that he has lost a step.
Sell: Filippo Inzaghi - Already linked with Parma, Superpippo has had a wonderful career, becoming the highest goalscorer in Champions League history this year. His will and determination makes it hard not to like him, and his joyous celebrations after every goal just go to demonstrate his passion for the game. He deserves to be playing more often, but it's not going to happen at Milan at this stage of his career.
Keep: Marco Borriello - An interesting player who scores spectacular volleys with his left foot, but then fails to capitalize on easy opportunities. He is a striker who plays great against mediocre opposition, but fails to distinguish himself when faced against the top tier sides.
Buy: Javier Pastore - The Argentine Playmaker who currently suits up for Palermo is undoubtedly one of the most promising young prospects in Europe. Reminds me of a Kaka, but with more flair and dribbling ability.
Buy: Edin Dzeko - Milan almost signed him this past summer but Wolfsburg demanded too much money. I started scouting him since I had heard reports Milan were planning to make a second attempt at him this year - he is a very strong, physical presence who clogs up the middle and can score with either foot. Good on crosses and corners. His imposing aerial ability allows him to score many headers. He is young, and will keep improving. Would be the elite target man most Milan fans have been craving.

Every thing has gone.we will surely grab a big zero. The loss in the hand of Parma has demolished our slim hope.I think Milan president is busy to decorate his home instead of Milan. We cannot expect more in next season.Milan must need two strikers-Dzeko and Podoloski, and a midfielder like Lennon. other wise no chance at all.

hey matteo,
i was wondering, what do you think about krasic? hes an interesting player with good qualities and i feel that he would help us out on the wing since we play kind of a 4 3 3 now.

I'm curious to see how he performs against Inter in the Champions League. He is an interesting prospect who would undoubtedly thrive in Leonardo's system

Matteo, question.
Do you think it is time for Galliani to go? He has made some fanatastic signings in the past,(ie the dutch trio, kaka, rui costa, pato etc.) but he has made some very stupid moves as of late. Simply keeping gourcuff would have kept us in the race for the scudetto. its hard to believe i am saying this, but it may be time for Galliani to pick up his pension with your boy Favalli.
Your thoughts?

Good article - was waitin for this one!
Prolly better Milan doesn't win it this year -wake up management to make the changes needed.
GK - Agree with all
D - Bonucci (having his idol persuade him to join wouldn't work?). Wouldn't spend $ on Vidic. DeSilvestri-don't see ACF selling. Agree on Yepes. I'd go after Motta.
M - Gourcouff won't be coming back. Always looked out of place with Milan. If Inter can go after Cesc y not AC?
F - Isn't Mancini on loan? Send him back. Dzeko is a must. Sell Marco. Let him be a big fish in a small pond again 'cause he doesn't seem to do well in the big pond. I'd look into what it would take to pry Balotelli away.Didn't think I'd say this 3 mo. ago, but see what you can get for Pato. If you can get 55M from Chelsea do you do it? It would pay for Dzeko plus give cash to spend on some of these other names. Who says we have to play with wings up front?
4-3-1-2 would work. Put Ronnie behind Dzeko and whoever(Balotelli,Matri,Morimoto)

What about ronaldinho the showman should he go or stay 4 long

Posted by Pagliuca on 03/26/2010
Brother Matteo:
I like your signings and agree about our GK issue. Dida, thou brilliant(at times) is not the same Dida after 05. Given so many chances he's not Milan material anymore thou I think he was better than Sebestain. Still needs go. Storari is a revelation at Sampdoria, and Abiatti is what I've been screaming for--consistancy. Roma? Could be our 4th? Thou, I'm curious about a certain Juventus keeper who may want to leave?
Defense: Yepes? Another workable Favalli but I'll take him. The Professor, Kalazde, and Jankolovski should go thou I liked them all when they did play. Antonini is a good FB but can he be Milan material? Zambro, injuries yes but when in form he should stay. Onyweu? Didn't have a chance but still when he did I was not impressed. Bringing in: DiSilvestre, we should of got him this year but didn't. Kolarov (Lazio) great at LB role would be dynamite. Subotic, very strong in the air and ground could be another Vidic. Santacroce, still think..(cont)

Posted by steven79w on 03/26/2010
i wonder where is our american center back onyewu??he play very good at confederation cup
and how about adiyiah?he is good or not??why don't test him in the first team??
and joe cole is free at the end of the season, he can play wide and center
 |
Posted by Pagliuca on 03/26/2010
Part II
Santacroce--could be gem with Silva/Nesta. Marco Motta, great RB. Midfield: Rino either bench or sell thou will break my heart. Ambro can stay, Pirlo stay but needs rotated. Flamini-he's awesome must stay. Seedorf-should stay. Gago, I still see him as a good replacement for Pirlo. Krasic on the wing and a technician. Pastore could be a good signing. Gourcuff-who cares what Lippi/Vialli said about him he's Milan material and now we will pay to get him. Attack; Sell Boriello-work ethic is there but hey we need him to score! Hunter-he needs those balls to be played to him!! Pippo-Legend! But if we can get something for him fine! Miss him thou!! Dzeko a finisher a must have. Jovetic perfect rotation with Roni and possible Trequartista, and Balotelli for reasons known!
Potential CL squad: Abiatti; Motta-Nesta/Bonucci-Kolarov; Krasic-Flamini-Gago; Jovetic/Gourcuff;Roni-Balotelli. Question: If Silvio opens the wallet can this "dreaming" be reaility and will he? What do you think
 |
Posted by Matteo Bonetti on 03/26/2010
Pagliuca:
Motta would be a good signing as well. Anyways, you have to keep in mind that Silvio Berlusconi is the Prime Minister of Italy. How would it look from a political perspective if he starts dumping lavish sums of money ala Florentino Perez? Either way, Milan need backups more than starters. If our starting 11 are healthy, we can compete with anybody. The problem is having able backups that can fill in valiantly during times of injury crisis.
 |
Posted by Pagliuca on 03/26/2010
Matteo:
I agree and see the Silvio perspective. However, I still think he needs to open something up. Look at the Viola at the players they landed and still how much did they pay for Di-Silvestre, Jovetic, and Ljaic (Balkan Kaka). Still we're not going on the Perez route but at the same time; we have an aging squad, injury plagued players, players reaching their zenith and fading, players who are not Milan material, and no direct hiers or replacments in the most vital of positions. Hopefully Silvio will splash some money decently or from a third party, but if he had no interest in the club anymore then I think he should sell or get out of the business. Because we can't have crashes like we did in the champions league. Do you think something like this would have been unheard of only 3 or 4 years ago? Sempre Milan!!!
 |
Posted by acmilandrew on 03/26/2010
Is it just me or did Pirlo playing just in front of the defence stop working years ago?Probably when Wiltord of all people roughed him up versus Lyon in 2006.Anyways I think he should play further forward.Kolarov at LB is a good shout!GK?Since Lloris turned us down we seemed to think thats a low rent position.

this milan team is a joke.having been a milan fan for 20yrs now,and the only milan fan in my area, and the only friend to a guy that gave birth to a son and named in milan,to notice the systematic destruction of our beloved club makes me weep and sick.for how long should we endure this charade of so called board members....what else can i say

Interesting column. I am pretty young, but I even I have seen (and dreaded) Milan turning into the geriatric league team it is. Can we land a player who's younger than 30. And what a great call with Edin Dzeko. He has the kind of power and rocketshot that could complement Pato perfectly. I don't know if that's such a good idea now, though. We already have a player (Borrielo) who can fit that role. Perhaps we should wait on him and see what happens. And Joaquin? Really? Another 28 year old who in 4 years will be 32 and half-dead. WE NEED YOUTH. We need skilled 20-24 year olds. However, finally someone says that we should sell Gattuso. The guy's a shell of his former self. I cringe when he's put in the lineup. I think we need a solid, consistent, starting 11, rather than this constant fishing for the right people.
 |
Posted by Kaleb on 03/28/2010
I may have said this earlier but why is everyone writing off Pato? He's only 20, has amazing talent and potential, and besides this setback, has been consistently getting better. Many players struggle with an injury early on, but they learn how to deal with it. He's only had one injury so far.

You forgot to sell Zambrotta. Do you know how the deal works for us to bring back Alberto Paloschi?

Posted by Zainali Bhimani on 03/29/2010
Starting 11
GK: Sergio Asenjo
DEF: De Silvestre / NEsta / Silva / Antonini
Mid: Flamini(Pirlo) / Krasic/ Pastore
Att: Pato / Dzeko / Rossi
Sub: Borrillo / Flamini / Ambrosini / Adiya / Pirlo(flamini)

milan must buy player like hamsik..he is a great player, young and has a great vision n a great finisher too..they have 2 buy more young player like bonucci, kjaer, pastore n dzeko...n sell player like dida,kaladze,huntellar..also milan can buy player lkike balotelli..repcale the GK with a young n talendted player like asenjo or sirigu..ranocchia is good too..the biggest mistake 4 milan is selling gourcouff..now,he is established himself as a one of the greatest midfielder in the ligue 1..big mistake 2 sell player like that...how come milan didn't just loan him again in bordeaux??
 |
Posted by flo on 03/31/2010
i couldnt agree more..nice article..losing Gourcuff is the biggest mistake milan has made in a long time. losing Pato would be a bigger mistake. he is a future world footballer, mark my words. signing balotelli would be a good deal. a front 3 of pato dzeko and balotelli/krasic is beautiful with ronnie running the midfield and flamini and pirlo sitting behind him.. but i wish we could bring Gourcuff back..i would give ronaldinho for gourcuff anytime anyday

Pretty good analysis. I know everyone cringes at the Yepes signing, however there is some method to the madness. Thiago Silva is physically talented, but I always see other defenders literally telling him where to go during the games. When Nesta is directing him, he does very well. When Nesta is hurt (which is often), there needs to be a tough, experienced defender back there to direct him until he has developed more experience. Yepes fits that role. I think this is more of a sign that Milan hasn't given up on Nesta. Otherwise, the option is to unload Nesta. The thought of that makes me cringe much more.

Hi Matteo,
I agree with most of your comments, Milan needs better quality backups but need also new stars starters. Fabregas would be my dream signing together with Dzeko, but I am afraid the price to pay is not even considered by our President. All the names mentioned for the defense sound good, I would even add Gareth Bale from Hotspurs who is really an impressive full back with great abilities going forward. Let's start giving more opportunities to our youngsters who are doing pretty well with the "Primavera", I mean what sense does it make playing someone like Favalli while we could slowly introduce someone younger. After all Baresi, Costacurta and Maldini were completely unknown and very young when they started and they turned out being best defenders of their generations. The season is not over yet and we still have a chance at winning the scudetto, but yes as you mention we lack of depth and quality, but Inter will keep on focusing on CL and will loose more points.

Milan 1963:
The reason I don't include people like Gareth Bale is because it's really unnecessary to go fishing in England for a fullback. The success rate of English players in the Serie A has been virtually nonexistent recently. Why buy a player who has to learn an entire new language, way of life, and soccer style when you can just buy a homegrown product that already knows the system? The premiership is very different from the Serie A. I've always been a huge supporter of keeping Italian teams Italian. The 6+5 rule had many holes, but the idea was correct. Teams like Arsenal and Inter have no national identity because they field so few local players. It's really a shame.

Matteo, u need to make an exception to your opinion on english players: joe cole would fit in well due o his maveric and sublime-ballskills play. on his day he's as good as ronnie going forward but can play in more positions as well as defend....he came to the fore playing just behind di canio in west ham. enough said

The somewhat bizarre thing is that nearly nine years ago, after Colombia won the Copa America on home soil, I was championing the potential signing of Yepes. We didn't sign him then, and he went on to a somewhat average club career. Now it's almost surreal that we're snapping him up when he's 34!
I agree with the analysis otherwise, with the exception of Abate and Huntelaar, who I would keep in the squad. Assuming Leonardo is still in charge, and I hope he is, we're going to be playing 4-3-3 next term. I think Abate deserves perserverance, and would let him develop at right back. He'll make mistakes, but all young players do. I think Vidic is unobtainable though, and will probably head to Spain if he leaves Manchester. Kjaer is a younger alternative who I would like to see at Milan. IMO there are three high class centre backs playing in Italy at the moment; if Bonucci and Ranocchia are unobtainable, grab the other one.
 |
Posted by Anonymous on 04/18/2010
I don't really see why every one wants to sell huntelaar he is young give him chance to get better and he continues to be the forth highest scorer on the team then consider getting rid of one of milans assets.
