In general, writers like things called ‘themes’ that they can hang their articles around. Therefore, if there is anything mildly unusual or different about a story, for example one of the teams in an English league match being Welsh, then you can expect the scribe to bang on about it for ages.

It won’t be much of a surprise to hear that people who spend the majority of their time watching football matches have often had somewhat misspent youths. During my teen years, when not filling Pannini sticker albums or shuffling along crowded streets towards stadiums United were due to play in, I could be found shooting pool or snooker to a reasonable standard. Never in my life have I met a nation of people who can beat me so consistently at the game of pool as the Welsh. Before this weekend, United had never won in Swansea either. It was time to put those things right.

Ryan Giggs, our Welsh representative, put his countrymen to the sword with the kind of simple tee-up that makes the game of football look easy. That is the second assist Giggs has in just six games this season, I am not sure he has even broken a serious sweat yet. He may be aging, but he is still class.

As is Javier Hernandez, whose finish proved the difference for us again as we slowly morph into “one-nil for the United”. Frankly, the fact that we are putting together results in any fashion whatsoever is a massive achievement. In much the same way that Arsenal have quietly rehabilitated themselves after their tonking at Old Trafford, United have been stacking up the points modestly and efficiently.

City, however, remain a menace. They are clearly both the stand-out squad in the division and the form team too. They have also just posted an operating loss larger than any recorded before in the history of English football. Doing such things is not an option for either United or the Gunners.

Instead of looking at the results City are posting, or the salary packets of their players, Fergie is doing what he can do and what he should do. He is improving our team’s lot week by week and making steady improvements. As he himself said in the post match interview, five clean sheets on the trot is not bad for a team who were being criticised for being too open at the back some short weeks ago.

The attacking side who stormed into the opening weeks of the campaign is still there and will emerge again when the time is right. In the meantime, steel and guile are being added to the attributes of this young squad.

United are marching on at the moment. Once again, we have our exceptional manager to thank for steering this club through another delicate patch. I have a sneaking suspicion that United will start moving up through the gears now. With games against Benfica and Newcastle up next, we will need to.
Now, who's for a game of pool?

Glad to see you back sooner rather than later, Mark. As for United, well, five wins and five clean sheets since the derby but still waiting for the swagger to return. Anderson was dropped yet again and in came Michael Carrick with an-almost Man of the Match performance. Well done, Michael. Evra was left in Dyer's wake all night long and was rightly hauled off after picking up a deserved yellow. I posted last week, after watching him put over a couple of good corners against Sunderland, that perhaps I'd see Nani deliver a couple of decent crosses at Swansea. No such luck - not by a long shot. Not only did he revert back to his woeful corners, but I don't recall a good cross from him all match. He's absolutely bloody awful and has been the last 10 or 15 matches. The funniest thing though was watching him pull his face after a teammate failed with an inch-perfect delivery of their own. Classic. Benfica next and a performance to wrap up the group is on the cards. 3-0 to United.

I honestly dislike Mrs. Carrick, but on the night he was our best player...

Posted by Oz on 11/20/2011

nice to see an improvement in passing and holding on to the ball- although that creative spark is still missing, hopefully united are slowly building for the Christmas rush..

Evra has been crap for well over a year! - he could never cross the ball that well (always seems to find an opposition defender)but he was a decent defender - whats going on?

Really enjoy the fact that United are out of the limelight and all the headlines are about City. I think the players are benefiting from the reduced publicity.

Although a 1-0 victory still begets 3 points, I'd rather they make it 2-0. Very difficult as a fan to watch United defend a 1-0 lead from the 80th min of such games.

Posted by Toronto Red on 11/21/2011

I guess you could say at least we're winning and at least we're not shipping goals but this was yet another ugly game. you know things are at a low point when Tom Cleverly who i think is going to be star but for now is just a kid back from loan is our excuse.

This midfield is a travesty. Carrick, Park and Fletcher (sub) have no creativity at all between them. Giggs is a bit past it though he did make the telling play yet again. And has anyone seen Nani, is he still around? Do any of them get into the midfield of any of the other top 5 teams? Not a chance. I mean, at this point just play Morrison or Pogba.

We were strong at the back, strong up front but the midfield is a black hole. We are being overun in MF constantly. We're playing ok defenisvely and yes it is early but City will likely be away and hidden when we make our run around xmas.

Yes we are winning but to be ok with this is to have your head in the sand. One mistake and these wins are draws. Need reinforcements.

what united are doing is similar what city did last season- get the clean sheets, make ur deensive team tight and solid, and as you gain confidence, with time, start attacking...

Posted by Odey moses on 11/21/2011

United are still United but with their present form especially the mildfield there's nothing to write home about, but only SIR ALEX can look into this january transfer window to bring somebody like SNEIJER or MODRIC to the team to still keep united alive compare to what manchester city are playing right now.

Posted by Dev on 11/22/2011

It was nice to see Man Utd winning games but watching them winning on 1 - 0 is so tense till end of the match. The pace of our match dropped so badly since the injury of Tom Cleverly. No creativity at all in the game. It's quite frustrating to watch a game with no creativity.
I'm wondering why do we need wide players like Nani who doesn't provide any crosss into the 6 yard box. he only aim to to score which frustrate the other team mates. Rooney is the victim most of the time and he shows tat on the field. That frustrates the fans as well. Valencia and young plays better crosses than Nani. I hope Sir Alex will address this asap.

Great comment from Toronto Red. ditto everything he said.

our attacking midfield is a black hole, and its sucking our wingers, namely nani into a mire too. it's high time to either give a chance to pogba/ morrison... and/or bring in (a) new reinforcement(s)

Posted by Dev on 11/22/2011

If Man Utd is going to continue scrapping results like this 1-0, soon or later they'll be out of Champions League. Teams like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, etc all plays with great creativity. What is the use for the striker to score early and the whole team to defend till the end. that's just presuring the team. 1 mistake there goes the win to draw. 2 mistakes and we loose. So I hope Sir Alex will get sum1 creative in the midfield soon rather than later.

Not sure why everyone on here thinks Fergie's going to splash out the big money on a midfielder in January. He's not. I read Modric's name mentioned above; why on earth would SAF want a Spurs player who's already publicly professed his love and admiration for Chelsea? Sneijder could have come in the summer, but his outrageous financial demands and refusal to compromise, clearly turned Fergie off. The Gaffer's going with the squad he's got and it's up to the likes of Nani, Anderson and Park to get their fingers out and start performing like Champions. I certainly don't agree with "Toronto Red's" assertion that City will be "away and hidden" come Christmas. City have had an incredibly soft schedule so far, while United have not only had it much tougher, but lost the derby. Being just 5 points back is an absolute gift. United's favourable fixture list between now and late January is a golden opportunity to really seize the initiative. De Gea's improvement is really encouraging though.

Sir Alex should look into the market this jan transfer window for a midfield play maker, otherwise man u will end up dropping points.

Posted by Flexy on 11/22/2011

It's high time you stepped up this Midfield game,Like one did say Mrs. Carrick, his game is out-dated such midfield play without runs and ducks ain't existing no more. Get some creativity real soon SAF or get Pogba,Morrison in there we saw the change Cleverley brought...Just do something.

There's no doubt on a couple of things.YES we're back on track.YES we've been defending better as a unit.YES we're winning games. But NO,we're not even close to top form.NO chance of winning the UCL this season(if we played Barca tmrw,we'd get a right hiding!)NO passage of play thru the midfield, but that coz NO we dont have no fuckin midfield. What we have are a bunch of players who can see out Swansea, but wont stand a chance in hell of containing a team on form like Barca etc.We lack creativity like a sore thumb, and it's plain for everyone to see that we suck big time in midfield.Hopefully the squad will buck up,and sadly, looks like Tom will have to step up and take the bull by the horns this season instead of 1-2yrs time.Sad really,as he'll be murdered if he plays like shite, despite this being his first season. So YES we;re on track but no we're not even close to being the finished article.Re-inforcements are defo required , someone who can create, hold and pass the ball ala Scholes...

Maybe it wouldn't be so bad to take an easrly exit from the CL: after all, realistically speaking, we know we haven't got a chance with this team and it's only a matter of time before we draw one of the currrent European powerhouses and are out.

If City, on the other hand, do start to get somewhere in the CL, since they have a midfield, then maybe they will get too stretched and start to ship points in the Premiership. This we can take advantage of if we are solely focussed on domestic triumph, and maybe if we win at the Eithad, we can reel them in.

But I wouldn't bet on it. You might just as well bet on them winning the PL with record points. I only hope that if they do do well in the PL, they don't toally upstage us by doing well in the CL as well (God forbid they should win it, scoring 4 against barca in the final!)

Toronto Red, Great Comment !
David Smith time to appreciate our non British players.
If SAF listened to people like you he could buy 11 Fletchers for the price of one Evra or Nani.

Evra has got rum into the ground the number of matches he has started. Yes he did not bring Dyer down, he got a yellow without that. Monk made a couple of horrid moves on Chicha but he got away with it, no card. The fifth minute challenge was wicked.
Nani has got shunted around from right to left and back to the right.
Just because Rooney is willing to play just about anywhere he has been shifted around and it is telling in the quality of his play.

Cleverley and Young seem to be made of glass.. Both are very slimly built and Davies's foul on Tom was a red card offence.
Cleverley is a rare talent and he has a great partnership with Anderson. The opposition knows very well that Tom can turn any game around he will always be targeted unfortunately.

All I ask is treat every player in red as our very own.

Dev,we are not able to score freely, lucky for us Sinclair missed the ultimate sitter.

We scored 3 against Aldershot, a team from a lower division.

I know our boys can play a lot better, they can change gear and turn on the goals as well as the style. I am waiting for that day.

I feel Ferguson should give Morisson a run, that boy has class. It would mean curtains for the likes of Fletch. Carrick was great a couple of years back, he showed us glimpses of that against the Swans. Hope he can keep up his resurgence.

Posted by OPK on 11/22/2011

There's lot of problem with our midfield. No creativity or whatsoever. January window is an opportunity for us but I wouldn't want to see Sneider, he is aging. I think Modric will do. 2-0 against Benfica

Posted by lamin sanneh on 11/22/2011

SIR ALEX SUT TRY AN BUY A CREATIVE PLAYER.............

Posted by David Smith on 11/23/2011

I'm not quite sure where all these supposed United fans hail from, but there are some absolute muppets who post on here. "Maybe it wouldn't be so bad to take an early exit from the Champions League" and "time to appreciate our non British players"? The early exit suggestion is so fucking daft it defies belief....and a response. And as far as appreciating our non-Brits, I could care less where a player's from or the colour of his skin. If you're shite, as Anderson and Nani have been this season, then you should get called on it. We don't need politically correct pansies on here; just United fans with half a brain. As far as the Benfica match is concerned, we didn't win for three very simple reasons 1) No Rooney 2) No Vidic and 3) Nani failed, yet again, on the big stage. I would of hauled off Young, instead of Valencia, when Hernandez came on as well. Carrick had another good game though and it's a shame he misses out next month for a tackle that didn't warrant a yellow card.

2-2 against Benfica, not bad but not a great result too. Prior to this game, after we got our lesson from Man City, a scrappy-do 1-0 against Everton, Sunderland and Swansea. Not really a great performances but still good result in terms of 3 points per game.

Benfica started strong with their midfielders one touch passing and fast game as our team as usual, started slow and progress accordingly but it is the Manchester United way, the Ferguson way that had led to many cup titles, so can't complaint much.

But here's the thing, do we, the fans, honestly believe that our current squad can win CL? Can really beat the likes of Barca and Real Madrid with previous and current squad performances?

Of course we, the fans want to be +ve thinking but we still have to think logically and do reality check. Hopes that SAF and the management are on their "thinking caps" now toward the transfer window.

Posted by kiran on 11/23/2011

i think we should sign de rossi but i dnt think he will sign for us dis winter but as far as his play , it will suits our style !! he does return back in defence as well as he can be lethal up front too !! but if saf is tryng to buy any midfield in jan ten sneijder could be possible signing also david beckham will be out of contract tis december !!

Posted by oz on 11/24/2011

Why are some people coming on this site to say that SAF needs to buy this or that player??

Do you think that if SAF was interested in a certain player that they will automatically come to united? e.g. Modric is not going anywhere, Spurs made that VERY CLEAR!!!

@Kiran, have you been smoking crack??

Also SAF is not normally a big mover in the transfer window in January and many of the established players are CL cup tied.

Posted by Toronto Red on 11/25/2011

So here we are clinging to the hope of getting out of our easy group in the UCL, we are clearly miles behind citeh in the EPL, Cleverly is out till Christmas, Anderson until February and sadly Fletcher, Park and Carrick are healthy, and yet Fergie still maintains all is well and that we don't need to dip into the transfer window. Apprently he is watching a different game that the rest of us. And before you all start freaking out that Fergie knows more than i do and that he is the greatest of all time, just know i agree with you. He is without a doubt the greatest we have seen and the greatest we ever will see.
With that said, this team is not good enough to win the CL which is HIS stated goal. It might be enough to win the EPL, if citeh bottle it like Cheslki did last year, but this is not vintage UTD. This is not Giggs, Keane, Scholes, Becks. This is barely WBA. Either sign 1 or 2 MF or really let the kids play. Pogba and Morrison are ready. The current group? not so much

Posted by David Smith on 11/26/2011

No one in their right mind would ever celebrate a player getting injured, especially a player for their own side, but Anderson not running the show until February is great news for United. The lad simply doesn't possess the quality or mentality required to lead the United charge. Obviously, Pogba and Morrison aren't ready, hence why "the greatest of all time" hasn't turned to them. I'm thinking that IF they were, Fergie would of left Wayne up front instead. So, while dopey Canadians "cling to the hope of getting out of our easy group," United will look to make up the "miles" on City as we play host to Newcastle. Some people obviously haven't seen Cty's fixtures between now and February; manage tricky trips away to Villa and Fulham correctly and United will be rubbing their hands. So while we're "barely WBA" at the moment and not "Giggs, Keane, Scholes and Becks," at least the hockey-loving Reds from the tundra can take comfort in the fact that Anderson will be back if City bottle it.
