Manchester United
Posted by Mark Payne on 08/08/2011

It makes me feel slightly ill to see Brian Kidd sat on the Manchester City bench, but it was probably him who felt sickest at the end of this match. Although this was certainly not a performance without flaws from United, there was plenty on display to be pleased about. Not to mention of course, that scoring the winner ten seconds from the end is just about the best way you can beat your closest rivals.

The unforgiving vice that is David de Gea’s existence looked to be tightening fatally at half-time. We will all do well to remember that Jaap Stam was made to look like a builder’s skip on his debut in the 1998 Charity Shield and he turned out okay. Although the Spaniard looked like he could have done better with the second, Fergie has been saying all along we need to give the guy time to settle. The fact that he is 20 years old boggles the mind and two of his saves in the second half were highly impressive. I also liked the look of his quick, Schmeichel-like distribution of the ball.

He has plenty of people up front to aim his kicks at anyway. Nani in particular is starting to edge towards awesomeness. Let’s hear it for that second goal of United’s, an absolute beauty and dare I say it, Barcelona-esque. Could this be the culmination of an enormous amount of training pitch work over the summer? I hope so.

The fact that Nani et al were able to pass it around despite the bludgeoning of some of City’s tackling is even more remarkable. Micah Richards is some player, his ability to not get sent off when clearly deserving of a red reminds me of Alan Shearer. I hope they win the same amount of medals.

Smalling and Cleverly were both also excellent but before we get lost in hyperbole let’s try to look realistically at why we conceded twice at the end of a first half we dominated. Frankly, Rio and Evra looked a little of the pace. James Milner made mincemeat of the man that United fans call ‘Postman Patrice’ and it may well be time to install a Da Silva twin at left back more permanently.

It is also hard to escape the feeling that one of the biggest factors behind the victory, yet again, is the indestructible quality of our manager. Fergie can obviously still deliver a teamtalk even if most of his players are younger than most of his suits.

With so much youth on display, lapses in concentration would be understandable, but not on the Scotsman’s watch. United have shown this weekend we have a side which won’t even peak for a couple of years. And they did it by dominating the most expensive team in history. The squad isn’t perfect, but if they can continue to deliver entertainment like then so what? We’re Man United, we do what we like.

You fucking spastic.

Posted by Norfstander on 08/08/2011

I take it you missed the whole Rooney episode last year? He's not a mercenary but some City players are? How does that work?

I'm a City fan, but even when we lose I'll call games how i see them. United were the better side, but that's all it was - one side performing better on the day.

It'd be nice if football supporters; Red, Blue or of any other persuasion, could just talk about the game they love intelligently and honestly instead of awfully writte, petty, trolling articles like these.

Posted by MCFC on 08/08/2011

Very, very bitter little man ! You won in injury time in a pre-season friendly, do you remember the score the last time we met at Wembley ?? Most expensive team in history - are we talking Ferdinand 30m, Rooney 30m, De Gea 18m, Jones 16m, Young 17m, Berbatov 30m, Carrick 18m, Nani 18, Anderson 18m, Valencia 17m - £212m I could go on.
If you want to be a successful sports journalist, try and keep your little rants to yourself, and lets just see how the season pans out once it has started.

Posted by redmanc on 08/08/2011

did anyone see how many empty seats were in the city end..The city is united's and always has been since post war times..city are just another plastic chelsea, any success you do get will always be tainted by the money you have spent. no class..19 times..Go listen to fuking beady eye you soft c_nts.

Posted by alan amdur on 08/08/2011

United kicked of that game with ONE home grown player - Welbeck - so who are the mercenaries??
Typical rag drivel. One thing is for sure with morons like rooney and carrick in the squad - the united brain cell count will be well below the national premiership average again this season

Posted by girlfavourite on 08/08/2011

100% true, note bout Richards for Pulitzer! - every word signable - CLASS v. NOWHERE & again the CLASS wins. Blue ulcers have not much to deliver, they are poorer then I´ve dreamed of. All you blue idiots above - EAT IT, unalphabeted trottles, more of the same will come ... or at least should since the wants to keep its status & quality cause blue shopaholice will find another toy at the very ´1st moment after their ´club´ gets back to where it belongs - one of divisions, don´t ask me which one it will be.
UNITED RULE & LONG MAY THAT LAST, YOU simply CANNOT BUY CLASS, BLUE ULCERS!

Posted by rh on 08/08/2011

what a load of shite. you are FUCKING MORON.

Posted by city? haha on 08/08/2011

hahaha - crying pity fans, it´s worth beating them, United all the way ... & the idiot above is trying to count, then - it is much much more then 1,2 BILLION spent for the blue ulcers in only last 2,5 ys - so, WHAT EXACTLY are you talking about, poor blue ulcer???

Posted by Manc on 08/08/2011

Where was the team spirit in the semi final of the fa cup then. Did city have it and united were the mercenaries? What a strange argument you propose when united pre abramovic were the highest salary payers for 20 years.

By the way : this was the charity shield not a meaningful game, say a cup semi final :)

Alex Blue: do you really want to speak about payments?? Who are the best payed players in PL? The players of City! The sheik pays extravagant sums for the players, otherwise they won't sign any contract with you. Do they love City? NO! They just love money!

How many of your players are homegrown? One? Pathetic!

@redmanc Yeah you had more fans there and you're right - the city is yours. London, that is. The motorways were like the semi packed with City fans coming from MANCHESTER and there was barely a red in sight. It was the annual big day out for your plastic fans from down south with a dash of the camera-snapping Asians thrown in.

Posted by Martin on 08/08/2011

Dear Mr. MCFC,
£212 million in a 9 year period gives us an average of 23 millions. It also shows ability to recognise young players and develop them....

Posted by Ben on 08/08/2011

Two great quotes-Micah Richards and Fergie's suits. And the fact that RH and Nick have such praise for this column is further evidence of how good it is :)
Also of note-in the second half (almost all of it) Rooney and Young were the OLDEST players at 25-It was just awesome to see the captain's arm band on Da Silva---finally, it is NOT the role of this column to report but to opin-ignore the retards and call it like YOU see it-we read this because we want to see what YOU think

Posted by Allan on 08/08/2011

"Ferdinand 30m, Rooney 30m, De Gea 18m, Jones 16m, Young 17m, Berbatov 30m, Carrick 18m, Nani 18, Anderson 18m, Valencia 17m - £212m"

Those are transfer fees, not wages. Wages are what draw the players in, transfer fees are what draw selling clubs in. City's wage bill was higher than United's last season and given what's happened since - United replacing several older, higher earning players with younger, cheaper players - you'd have to believe the disparity has grown. Also, City's had more than a handful of marquee names come in, collect high wages for a few years, and then look for an exit. None of the United players named above have done that. For every Rooney at United, there's a Bellamy, Robino, Adebayor, and Tevez at City breathing life into the "mercenary" tag.

Posted by MUFC on 08/08/2011

@MCFC -
No we're talking about
Carlos Tevez, £25.5million
James Milner, £24 million
Joleon Lescott, £24million
David Silva, £24million
Yaya Toure, £28million
Nigel De Jong, £17million
Aleksander Kolarov, £16million
Gareth Barry, £12 million
----
P.S
Carlos Tevez, £25.5million
Emmanuel Adebayor, £25million
Roque Santa Cruz, £17.5million
Kolo Toure, £14 million
Total - £252.5 million

MCFC = Mercenaries Come For Cash. An absolute horror show of a club that abandoned it's once promising Academy for the Chelski Way....trying to buy succes, glory and a history. 35 years without a single trophy, up and down the divisions like a yo yo, more managers than McDonalds, a massive 30,000 strong fan base from Stockport and all of a sudden it's Sergio Aguero's dream come true putting on the powder blue Citeh kit? Do me a favor. You muppets were so irrelevant, the Nazi's couldn't be arsed bombing Maine Road. You mugs welcomed the United Boys there as we gave the place a bit of class. When Robinho thinks he's signed for Manchester United and not Citeh, you know you're in trouble. Tevez and that loon Balotelli hate living in Manchester. They should try GREATER Manchester, UNITED Kingdom. Great match to watch; even better putting the Mercenaries back in their rightful place with yet another last minute winner. Pity Citeh couldn't fill their end; Sugar Daddy's working on it though.

Posted by Redsince86 on 08/09/2011

Look at the amount of City whiners here. Beyond the money spent, Fergie has instilled a fighting spirit that makes United who they are now. How many of your youth team members are ready for first team action apart from Adam Johnson? The players play for the love of winning and that is as good as playing for the club, because that's what United is about.

Don't slam the writer too. He's doing his job. You idiots should learn how to respect the columnist. I don't see hordes of Scousers making rude comments here after we've beaten them; especially about the columnist. (Maybe one or two here and there.) Look who are the real pricks here.

Posted by Godfrey on 08/09/2011

Posted by Gabriel on 08/09/2011

I wouldn't call Rooney bombing the ball up and then Nani taking all the way to the goal Barcalona style play. There's needs to be a lot more passing!

Posted by Aaron on 08/09/2011

All the united folk in one voice sing
'We are the champions, my friend (we'll try to be nice)
And we'll keep on fighting till the end!
We are the champions , NO TIME FOR LOSERS (hint hint)
Cause we are the champions'
And we'll do anything we wantttttttttttt'

hoot hoot!

Posted by justanotherlamer on 08/09/2011

@Aaron, you moron, he was talking about the second united goal where cleverly and rooney combined to give nani his first goal. learn to read properly before you commment.

Posted by Footy Fan! on 08/09/2011

MCFC,

Yo have to be kidding me! £212 in how many years? About 9 years buddy. Have a look at that list MUFC posted and see what it equates to. Not to mention Dzeko, Robinho and Aguero arent even on that list.. Need I mention that you also have a player called Bolatelli? It may seem like one is jumping on the bandwagon of hate however it is crystal clear why Jose Morinho let him go. An extremely arrogant player with a lack or respect and appreciation for the game to put it mildly. But of course he'll fit right into City, just showing the lows you'll stoop to to win a trophy. Mind you I have nothing against spending but when you have talents such as Adam Johnson not getting a game because you want a "bigger" name on the pitch is shocking! I can already hear the City defence being that they "created one of the best keepers England has ever seen". Need I mention how many Manchester United products were in the English teams of the past decade?

Posted by Footy Fan! on 08/09/2011

The City fans ranting on this page are hilarious by the way. How can your argument be that United have spent money in the past? If that's your argument then quite frankly it's just weak!

Have a little respect for the writer by the way. If he's so bad then maybe you should stop reading this BLOG (a place for OPINIONS) and go have a pub conference in a hostile blue pub!

Calling Rooney a mercenary may well be a fair opinion. The funny thing about it though is that you City fans were welcoming him with open arms even though he was from your local rivals. Not only does this show the bitterness you have towards United, but it also shows you inferiority complex and lack of class!

Posted by Julian on 08/09/2011

Uhhhh...for the idiots here who claim Mark is biased, he's a UNITED FAN, STUPID!!!!

Posted by Payneo on 08/09/2011

Why are all these idiots writing abuse to the writer - this is a Manchester United blog!
Every word of abuse makes them an embarrassment to their club.
You spent millions, and your still behind United. Grow up.

Posted by Yandrix on 08/09/2011

@ Gabriel...it was the second goal and not the third the blog writer referred to as Barcelona-esq! Watch the goal again and see why he described it like that. For all that anyone may've said here, United were always going to win that game even by a wider margin by my supposition., unfortunately they didnt. It was a derby and derbies are always like that!

Posted by Phil on 08/09/2011

Funny how all the MCFC fans always look at that FA Semi final match with Man U. its a freaking 1 - 0 score while Man United had that match with a Champions League Matches and Premier League title on their minds.

Just bear in mind that unless you win the premier league, the money you guys spent is just for the second tier silverware in a Domestic league.

City only played for the FA cup that night, and just a place in the top 4 which Arsenal and Spurs gave away with their self destruct button.

Posted by holderMU on 08/09/2011

dis so much fun. as a united faithful i can only laugh. For being a faithful is seeing urself united in thoughts and perspective. This concept is surely a mentality u cant find in mere fans of citeh...they r f**kin toddlers in d game. s of citeh...they r f**kin toddlers in d game.

Posted by bryan on 08/10/2011

The ideas of city's fans spewing profanities on utd's blog is shameful. if you don't like it, don't come to this blog. better still, try to beat us. till then, keep your million dollar mouths shut.

Posted by tom on 08/10/2011

Why the hell are there so many idiotic city fans on a united blog trying to claim that their over paid and over hyped squad isn't just that?

Posted by Raizzen on 08/10/2011

lol what the hell are blue bitter shits all over the place ? the comments section sure looked scant of you people the day after the match.

Posted by rosey99 on 08/10/2011

1st time Ive been on here and its no different to any other united blog, full of bitters. Get over it, you were outplayed for 83 mins, I'll give you those 7 mins before half time when even you couldnt beleive you were 2-0 up. Shouldnt you be marveling at the new enterence to the 'Etihad Campus' thats being completed in time for the opening day!!!
Complete and utter bunch of inbred liars

Posted by Kripa on 08/10/2011

Hi Mark, a nice one to welcome a new season ... and I loooove that you show those moronic citeh fans' comments :P

Great game! The best Community Shield game in years. A real sweet one considering that we're throwing a handful of youngsters to face the greedy mercenaries. It delivers a message that years from now, we'd still beat them.

We'd easily won with a greater margin, if you watched the game again, there are more than a few of our through ball that was sent to a different direction from the intended player. It shows that the youngsters could easily spot the weakness of citeh, they just need more time playing together to really clicked and understand each other.

Other teams should watch this game over and over, citeh were and always will be a weak side, exploit those weakness and keep them on the bottom half. Maybe sugar daddy would choose to play with sand and shovel instead of wasting his money buying useless mercs for a useless club.

Posted by kardajo on 08/10/2011

One way you can tell you've written a good article.... opposing fans try to tear you up before the true fans even have a chance to comment.

3 things to all the city fans....

1. when comparing money Utd have spent and money City have spent you're comparing a difference of 9 to 3 years... in 3 years city have spent more on players than utd have in 9.
2. if you're justifying your crazy spending by saying other clubs did it first it's kinda like saying... so and so robbed the bank ten years ago so why are you jumping on our backs for doing it now. It's wrong and just because some one else did it first doesn't mean you're justified in doing it now.
3. You've had 1 meaningful victory against us... how many have we had against you?

Please oh please bring liverpool back so our no. 1 rivals will have intelligent fans with a little bit of class (hard to say liverpool fans are classy but compared to City fans an ape would be classy)

Posted by Reetesh on 08/11/2011

Yeah I was quite shocked by the comments of the city fans but i guessed they were really really really hurt first by the defeat.. as they thought it would be a new era for city when they were 2 nil up.. but wasn't to be.. yeah secondly city players were described as mercenaries well truth hurts.. they are they should be called chelsea number 2 instead of manchester city.. am sorry the writer is right on this point.. Tevez.. what a bloody mercenary who will forever regret leaving man utd.. now its by the hour.. yeah city fans shouldn't be on a man utd column even ..

Posted by Trooper on 08/11/2011

Um...My daily diet as a Manchester United fan includes manutd.com, thebusbyway.com, espn, daily mail, mirror football (all for man utd news). Why the bloody hell would i find myself on a Man-Shitty related page commenting on Man-Shitty related matters?

I guess its homage to our great club that the Shitties saw it fit and more important to spend their time focusing on us rather than their inferiority complex of a club. SMH

Posted by Kirk on 08/12/2011

Nice going Mark. I agree with Trooper, why do manshitty supporters read and comment on a United blog? I can't find myself even wanting to read about other teams in the BPL. My only intertest is in Man United and although I read summaries on matches or transferrs, I would not read an opposition column. I thought that it was a good match and what was most pleasing to me was to see the young players continue with the never say die attitude. I am very impressed with Cleyerly and the young defenders. I agree with the statement that a young Da Silva should replace Evra as I am a bit concerned with Evra's form at this time. As far as Man City is concerned, the only player that is class to me is David Silva. I really enjoy watching him play and I think that he is with the wrong team. Don't get me wrong, I am not advocating Man United, but Man City will hamper his National Career. Glory, Glory, Man United and on to # 20.

Can't believe Man City fans reading a Man Utd related blog, written by a Man Utd fan. I'm a ManU fan, couldn't care less what's written on another club's blog. Good job and keep them coming Mr. Payne.

Posted by theJepit on 08/13/2011

Well done Mr Payne,
Last season there were only Liverpool fans who are annoyed by you, now the neighbours' fans joined in as well.
Wondered what they are doing reading a Man Utd fan blog anyway? Looking for praises for losing a two goal lead? To all city fans that are reading this and future posts, don't expect glowing references..

Posted by wayne rooney on 08/13/2011

So,to recap, United has as much silverware after the first game of the season as city has won in the last 30 some odd years.

Posted by Hari on 08/17/2011

lol,
there seems to be a lotta abuse by some city fans and a lotta united fans throwing the same back......yes it is an opinion peice but nowhere else in the website will you see such an article so biased against a particular club EVEN THE BARCA BLOG IS LESS PARTISAN TOWARD MADRID!! and the guys saying that city fans should not read the united blog should understand that some ppl are fans onf football 1st and their clubs second...the way they shouuld be

Posted by Yandrix on 10/13/2011

We're Manchester United and We do what we want...Shitty will forever live in our shadows!!! The reason Man City are so backward is because they are so concerned about United, they forget about themselves. They are copy cats and would have been opting to wear red like United, only it will make their fans have some difficulty watching them play badly in red when United do fabulously well in it!!!...Hahahahahahahahaha! Go Rooney, go Rooney go!!!

Posted by DAVE on 10/25/2011

lol 6-1

Posted by Lol on 11/26/2011

Lol I am not a City fan, but I despise United and the horrid cunts posting above are so typical of their fans - sheep who glory-hunt a successful club, when they have no familial or geographical attachment to the club whatsoever.

Reading this tonight, isn't hindsight great? All you clueless clowns talking about putting City in their place in a meaningless pre-season friendly (the CS), yet two months later you were utterly destroyed on your own patch.

Anyone who knows anything about football (which all of you United fans clearly don't) knows that Silva and Aguero are far better than anything United possess.

6-1 you horrid losers.
