United are a bit of an optical illusion at the moment. If you focus closely on one area something else will come into view, sometimes good, sometimes bad. Nothing has received more scrutiny recently than Wayne Rooney's approach to spending, budgeting and contract negotiation. All of which, sadly, removes the focus from the guys on the pitch playing the game.

And so, he stays. For now. Opening my eyes a smidgen wider I see we live in a country where 1/2 a million people have just been made unemployed by the government. Have your money Wayne, have it.

Following Sir Alex's press conference we now know Rooney wants to go. Fergie seemed to be pretty genuine so the ball is in Rooney's court. I, like every other fan, would like to know what his problem is.

League tables are useful things. Through the accumulation of points you can compare your team’s fortunes directly with another. They do however, like all types of statistics, miss the key ingredient - they don't capture the essence of what they are quantifying.

With United tracking Danish keeper Lindegaard, many are assuming that this could be Van Der Pensioner's last season in the gloves. Should Lindergaard win the gig he has a long line of goalkeeping greats to follow.

As United's players trudged off the field at the Stadium of Light they looked a little sheepish after this average display. The fans began the grim drive back from the North East safe in the knowledge there would be no Fergie press conference to catch up on during the journey.
