It can't be great being Avram Grant. Every time the guy needs to catch a break the Manchester United team bus hovers into view. He must be sick of the sight of us. After his first and last matches at Chelsea (including Moscow) and nine goals against Portsmouth last term maybe the Israeli felt he’d been punished enough. Not so.
Now he finds himself in charge of a bunch who struggled against Oxford a few days ago. Playing at Old Trafford under these circumstances must have been as enticing as spending three years in a North Korean prison. But frankly, we let them off lightly.
I was as delighted as most football fans last year when the top-four was finally infiltrated by another club. I had even naively thought that we now had a more competitive league because of it.
After watching this total mismatch of a game I am not so sure. We really carved them up with ease and at times it barely seemed as if the Hammers were on the field. I should imagine Edwin Van Der Sar was able to daintily hang his jersey on a hanger to save on the washing for next week.
Spurs, and of course City, have pulled themselves up to the top of the table by spending more money than is digestible. More in fact, than the annual solidarity package that is distributed to the entire football league. Each.
Instead of a more competitive division what we really have a two-tier system. If you are a manager of a bottom half club you might as well opt for damage limitation on occasions such as this. Mick McCarthy’s boldly controversial selection policy last season now seems ahead of its time.
Nonetheless, we are United, this is Old Trafford and our rivals are banging in goals for fun. This victory was satisfying on many levels and I feel compelled to mention again how nice our football is at the moment. This is in stark contrast to Chelsea who managed to put six past Wigan last week and still be more boring than a 12 hour wait in the bank.

Berbatov’s Matrix like flying kick was the pick of the bunch but Nani’s was also a beauty. I suspect my Dad could have scored one similar though against that West Ham defence. Arsene Wenger, had he been asked, would have called the penalty ‘Old Trafford-ish’ but having Wayne Rooney on the scoresheet was as important as anything else that happened in this game.
The current Paul Scholes media love-in is entirely justified. The man is immense at the moment and along with Queen Elizabet I and Asterix he can count himself among the most important ginger-haired people in European history. We certainly looked less imposing when he went off the field for Carrick.
And that’s why we let them off. Poised above our victim with dagger in hand, Fergie makes three substitutions and kills off the game. Perhaps he’d decided Avram has had enough now. West Ham are definitely in trouble.

Agree with u about the game ... we totally dominated and maybe should have scored more!
Great comparision with keanu reeves ... just made my day :D
Lets go man u! We'll just 6-0 chelsea on our next meeting eh? :D

Not sure your dad would have scored. He was more of a centre back destroyer type in the mould of the great Norbert Stiles (though I admit I never played with him, or, thankfully, against him, so can't be 100% sure he was not a midfield maestro a la Scholes.
This game was a doddle. But why bring those 3 subs on? And especially why Owen (he's finished) rather than Chicharito (he's hardly started)??

Hi Mark,
Nice to hear from you again. I am actually getting sick of watching us miss so may chances. I was watching a dvd of the 2003 championship season and somehow feel that we have lost a bit of sharpness in front of goal.
Still, I am confident that United will surely change gears once the autumn is over...

I could indeed have scored against West Ham.
And I wouldn't have missed that bloody penalty last week.

It's always nice to beat West Ham, for lots of reasons. One is that their fans contain a fair proportion of nasty cockney racists. Another is that we have had some of our worst moments at their tiny ground - 1995, 1992, 1974 etc.
They never come and just park the bus, and they never try to kick us off the park. But they are a feeble bunch at the moment.
Scholesey and Berbatov are probably the two most intelligent footballers in the British game at present. The flying backheel from Berbatov to give Nani a chance in the first half was Football of the Gods.
Nani was what I think he will continue to be for the rest of his time at OT, a combination of the divine and the incredibly frustrating. Superb goal, great chipped cross for the battling Bulgar's goal, but other crosses and shots needlessly fluffed.
I am getting more worried about the silence over Hargreaves. Is he perhaps trapped down a coal mine in Chile?

Wayne Rooney might have scored but... i'm one of those few people who dont really consider this a turning point. Even Wayne himself didnt look particularly moved. Hope he gets one like Nani's to get him up and running again...

Though its true that we let them off quite easily and I was expecting a rout of at least 4 or 6. But one thing worries me and am sure you guys noticed it too, the game was without flair once Scholesy was subbed.
Carrick was crap and Fergie's decision to sub Scholes, couldn't have been better timed than it was yesterday. I really think this is the season we should give Cleverly the chance to prove his worth.

Obviously, a thoroughly dominant performance, but certainly one you'd expect against the hapless Hammers at Old Trafford. It was nice to see Rooney get on the scoresheet, even if it was via the penalty spot, but for me the most encouraging signs were Nani's very well-taken goal and Berbatov's overall play and attitude. Very refreshing and long overdue. Let's hope it's the initial signs of an amazing season-to-come from the Bulgarian. On a side note, lovely to see Citeh go down in the fourth minute of extra time up at Sunderland today. I understand little Carlos missed an absolute sitter as well!!! What a great weekend.

Well would love to see 5-6 goals during the Hammers game, who wouldn't but as we had seen over the years, MU firepower is normally shown throughout 'important' games within the BIG-4. Maybe a tactical approach by MU management staff led by SAF not to expose yet a full blown firepower. As for now, I like to quote on what the "Special-One" had said before during his days with Inter Milan, more or less..."I would have prefer or trade 5-0 in a game to 1-0 for 5 games". 3 points is crutial still disappointed with previous Fulham game :( hopefully not many points drop after this especially during early season when we have most of our senior players up and running. Go MU!

sup, gunners fan here.
just wondering why all the manu fan in the world have to be so disgustingly cocky over EVERYTHING.
watched both your game and chelsea match.. chelsea played way better, it was more pleasing to the eye, and no, manu didnt look like they couldve scored more. i mean sure they couldve, but at most, one more goal, for the one that hit the post after it hit the tip of green's hand. and manu just didnt look dangerous at all. itd be unfair to compare it to 3 or 4 yrs ago when manu won the treble, and i have no shame in admitting they were something at that time. Their counter attack was equivalent to none.but i cant help but notice manu getting weaker, very slowly, yet steadily. and its no fluke that manu gave away their usual position on the table last year. and giggs and scholes wont be there forever... youngins really need to step up

it was a very Berbatovish performance by the boys, kudos to NANI.

Man U boss sir alex should take all the credits
for this team. He and wenger not the same person in football world, wenger cry too much and always blame other for his failure. Not to mention Rafal Benitez is joke, instill of he getting blessing from sir alex,he end up getting sin and bad luck. I tell you what? If you don't go back to sir Alex and appoligize you and your inter will sink again this year like the same as Liverpool last year .I think you already started the bad luck with Inter.

This piece of commentary just proves how self-absorbed and arrogant some Man U fans can be.

Am sure that Chelsea blogger is singing sky-high praise about other rival teams in your blog right about now. Just how righteous Chelsea fans are.
lol.
Get off your high horse. The fact that a Chelsea fan is here, reading slices of THOUGHTS & OPINIONS of an MU blogger and be pissed about it just show how shallow some Chelski fans could be.
dumb0.

Nice to tap of the Hammers,Nani/Berba Goals were brilliant,
Still bigger tests ahead, very important not to drop pts early.
Remember Burnley last year away,
No disrespect, but we have to put away the likes of Blackpool/Westbrom/Wigan,let it be at Old Trafford,or at there ground.
The Usual 5 or 6 at the top will still still be the toughest test,
Keep up the good work Man Utd,!!

One backheel does not make Berba a Cantona, do not elevate him to that status yet. The season is still long and he can still improve a lot. Hopefully he can be really devastating this season.
Chelski and Gunners fans; for the team that won a total 18 league titles, I believe it is the right for us to be cocky. The 19th should come sooner rather than later so for all you there, be patient, you'll reach there next century.
Rooney finally scored,..yay...

Been following the team since 1977...yes the football is pleasing, more so than last year, and probably the best since the peak of the rooney ronaldo counter attacking days (before CR7 got selfish).
But its a league, and a long one....it won't be a disaster if we're not playing at the top of our game yet...but its important to do enough to win each week.
Last week, after the great scholes opener, we didn't press the advantage and I had a sinking feeling that 1 would not be enough. I thought we got away with it, but in truth the result wasn't unfair.
I miss the old days when Bruce and Pallister were at the back, and we were under seige for the last 15 mins, holding a 1 goal lead and you looked at the play and you did not worry. Somehow, the steadiness is not there recently, esp after the short spell when Ferdinand and Vidic were both healthy.
Hope that Evans and Smalling "grows up" fast and strong......soon.

Great article Mark. I am quite upbeat about our chances of retaining our glory, injuries permitting. With Berba, Wazza and Chicha, we have quite a balanced strike force.Need not say much about Nani, Valencia and Gigsy. Our creative mid field is a cause for concern though. Let us pray that Scholsy remains injury free coz I don't have much faith in Carrick and Gibson. I guess SAF will use the Carling Cup to blood young Cleverly. At the back, I still retain confidence in young Johnny despite his rather shaky performance at Fulham. I hope the Da Silva twins will have more game time in this campaign. I also hope that Anderson will rediscover him form. GO UNITED!!!!!!!!!!!!

i belive that manchester will go far this season with rooney openinig goal,i think it will take us far.
 |
Posted by ben laryea on 08/30/2010
to say the least i like the way man united played last Saturday against west ham a will plead with our supporters to pray for point rather than goals this season the team has started well unlike previous seasons and this time it will not be easy to all our rivals. the only problem we are facing is the full comeback of our striker Rooney and i know he will bounce back in style. the Manchester team will grow from strength to strength and this season man united will still be winning the trophies to decorate the theater of dream we are still united and we shall for ever be. so lesser club back of for the masters are the driving seat.

i watched Ozil play for madrid over the weekend and it really hurts me so bad that we never got to sign that boy, he is a very good player, at least he is tested and we know wat he is capable of, we have signed bebe and the disturbing news is that is wasn't impressive in training, is it that we have signed just two player for the season?
The team is was built around Rooney last season and he was over used, we are all praising bebatov now but the truth his that he is a man who plays well against small team and hides himself against big team.We still need a playmaker to add to Rooney, player like Dzeko to easy Rooney.
Manutd in the past have been blessed with sharp attackers like cole, ronaldo, yorke, ole gunnar solskjaer etc.
I am not completely satisfied with the signing of this year.
Barcelona for example have so many attacking options.
The point am trying to make here is that i hope we don't end up depending on only rooney again this season

Posted by abdollar on 08/31/2010
I was pleased by rooney's opening goal, hope to see more improvement from him in the next match.it was a fantastic one from both nani and berba,i was impressed by their performance.up united........

Teams above us will run out of gas soon . We will surely be up there and with a 100% fit Rooney , what else to expect . With Berba enjoying , we will grab back the crown from chelsea . . .
for sure , the Malaysia Red Devils will be cheering their beloved MAN United .

I enjoyed Berbatov's stunner. But seriously, the guy needs to learn to head such chances when they come. Matrix stunt probably works 2 out of 10 tries.

I see from the papers today that Cleverley is going on loan to Wigan. We've got quite a few out on loan - Welbeck, Diouf etc. Who was the last player who came back from a loan and then made it as a regular first-teamer? Has there been anyone since Beckham?
What is Fergie up to? Is he really trying to give these lads Premiership experience, or is he just putting them in the shop window? I know you could say that experience is a great thing, but, frankly, Cleverley will get better football training at OT than playing for Wigan.

MANU ROCKED BUT THEY COULD HAVE SCORED MORE GOALS ROONEY IS FINALLY SHOWING HIS REAL SIGNS WHILE BERBATOV IS IN GOOD FORM WHILE NANI IS A PLAYER WHO JUST KEEPS ON IMPROVING

I have been a MAN U fan since in the 60's still watch them week in week out through out the season. I belive that this team is how weak. I have come to a conclusion that we have always started slow and trying to rush at the end of the season where there was not margin for error . Same for games last season, we press to get a goal and when we do get a goal the whole team just relax and squander chances after chances. Why are we not going for the juggler when the team has the ability to do it. Look at Chelsea they have been ruthless and their flowing football is attractive. Although I hate to admit, its the truth. I really hope that SAF start kicking butts to get results that was imminent during the time where Beckham, Neville, Yoke and company rules.

Just short comments on some of Man United payers.
Nani - needs to be a team player - don't be selfish.
Park - needs more physical muscles to be in PL- always goes to ground in every challenge.
Velancia- needs to be more "decisive" on the wings. For every 10 crosses I would say 2 find it's mark.
Bebatov - what can I say - hot one moment and cold through out the match.
Rooney - needs to keep his emotions in check. Let nature run it's course. the goals will flow.
Sholes - magestic perfomer always - needs to be wise on the tackles. Really a must have on the pitch for important matches.
All the new arrivals especially Hernandez has impressed.
Go United and make this season the 12th time that we have lifted the PL and set the all time record to have most number of titles in the bag.
