Manchester United

Fergie must be absolutely delighted. The first rays of sunshine have only just fallen on July and all of his playing squad are now on holiday. No longer subject to the pressures of a major tournament's taxing final stages, on the surface this is wonderful news for Manchester United, but is it a double-edged sword? Have United’s players all gone home early because they are not actually all that marvellous? Here I cast my eye over the performances of Old Trafford's representatives in South Africa.

Park Ji-Sung

The man American commentators call “Fergie’s Dog of War” has been United’s top of the pops in South Africa. He scored a corking goal in the opening game and caused all manner of havoc in every match he played. I was a big fan of the South Koreans and during the tournament have found their fans some of the best to hang out with, shame they couldn’t go further.

Patrice Evra

Viva la resistance eh Patrtice? Although Nicolas ‘The Incredible Sulk’ Anelka is credited with inspiring the French team’s uprising as captain Patrice must chew down a large slice of the blame. As a frustrated football player who will never get the chance to play at a World Cup I wag my finger angrily in the direction of the French squad and hope they feel my wrath.

Wayne Rooney

A leading candidate for not only the biggest disappointment of the finals, but also the worst player. He has been beyond reproach for United this year yet sadly the expectations of England and the rabid tabloid press seem to have crushed him. May well have been lacking match sharpness and still recovering from injury but he still had a shocker. I would have dropped him after Algeria. Nobody has provided a better argument in the last 2 years for the selection of Michael Owen. Ouch.

Fabio Capello emerges from 'clear the air talks' with JT and the England squad
Rio Ferdinand

Has got off lightly here. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that England would not have conceded four goals against Germany had he been on the pitch. Alas, being clattered by Emile Heskey in the opening training session gave him a get-out-of-jail-free card and misses the vilification. Spent the tournament proving how dangerous it is for top players to have Twitter profiles.

Michael Carrick

Did as good a job for England as he did for United last season.

Nemanja Vidic

Described by the Serbian manager as “not so much a rock but a mountain range” after qualification the big man didn’t really put a foot wrong in South Africa. Mind you, he didn’t really get much of a chance either. The Serbs being dumped out in the group stage and finishing below Australia robbed Vidic of his chance to elbow some of the game’s bigger players. He was part of the defence that kept out the free-scoring Germans though, and that deserves credit. Pity I don’t expect him to be at United for much longer.

David Beckham ™

England’s best player of the finals by some distance. The only thing that seemed to work out for us was the success of the 2018 bid’s progress. The only man to have pulled on the national shirt and shown some class in the last decade may well be called upon for the finals of that summer if things carry on like this.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Eighty million pounds?! You’re having a laugh. Perhaps if Cristiano paid more attention to the fact he plays as part of a team as opposed to having ten back up dancers Portugal may have gone further. I must say though, I very much enjoyed his goal against DPR Korea.

Hernandez

This guy looks like an astute signing and I expect him to put plenty of pressure of people like Macheda and Berbatov this season. Has already achieved more at a World Cup than Wayne Rooney.

Mesut Ozil?

Here’s hoping. A terrific talent who seems to understand the art of skinning a defender as well as having an appreciation for playing as part of a team. He has really announced himself this month and there will be a lot of bidding for him. Has stated a desire to join United so let’s hope we can afford him.

Fabiano?

‘Ageing striker announces desire to join Manchester United’ could be translated as ‘Fabiano wants large pay-check before retirement.’ The hit-man has put away some peachy goals and he couldn’t harm us if he joined, I am not certain Fergie is all that interested though.

All in all, had the tournament been rated on the basis of players’ clubs United would be finishing far below Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Ajax and Villareal. FC Porto would also be out of sight. I’ll try to ignore that I guess. Who are your tips to win from here on in?

El Chicharito Hernandez?

No offense man, but this was a pretty poor read...

You're better than this.

Posted by Urmstonian on 07/04/2010

The Roonster did look out of sorts, but he's used to playing with a much better team. How many of that England side would get into the United team? On footballing ability Ashley Cole and Stevie GBH perhaps, but surely we wouldn't sign them if they were on a Bosman. Even under the Glasers we have standards.

And what's happened to the England fans? We can't even organise a riot any more.

The Mexican lad looks interesting.

Glad you're slaving away over a hot TV to keep your readership happy through the summer.

Mesut Ozil = Paul scholes + acceleration - 14 years. Fergie, go grab him now for 15-20 million quid + anderson

Posted by The Grimace on 07/04/2010

Good point, Flit, he looks bloody good, but when did an English club ever get a good deal with a German club? There are people still in hospital in Munich because they have almost died laughing about getting £17 million for Hargreaves. He wouldn't get into the team at my local pub, the Dog and Duck.

I think you forgot an old alumni, Diego Forlan of Uruguay.

Posted by gareth on 07/07/2010

Revamp the midfield!! Bring in Thomas Mueller & Mesut Ozil !! Or even Wesley Sneijder

Posted by A Kamal on 07/07/2010

Wish SAF would try to get Ozil, Benzema and perhaps Muslera (Uruguay's keeper) and offload Anderson and Berbatov.

Posted by Grant from Oz on 07/07/2010

From what I could see, Ji-Sung Park appearded to be the only MU player genuinely interested in playing in the WC. The rest (Vidic excepted) seemed more interested in having a break. I am actually thankful for that. With so much importance and money in Europe who could blame them. It's not surprising to see a youthful German side doing so well. Let's hope our guys are well rested for the up-coming season - it'll be harder this year than the last.

Posted by olum edgar on 07/08/2010

i totally agree, Ji-Sung Park was a sensation to watch, this guy never seems to get tired and never seems to complain when dropped to the bench, enough about Park, there is this new Mexican kid Javier Hernandez, this guy does not care whether u you have played for a decade, he will take u on and make sure the ball finds itself in the back of the net, i think this will be Ferguson's best signing this coming season if only he can be given the chance. Edgar

There's no genuine news or rumours from SAF regarding buying player's from the world cup, ONLY had in mind of David Villa(fat hope).

Posted by wallywal on 07/08/2010

ill join the cause for united to sign Ozil, the guy is just 21 and already plays like a seasoned pro. United cant get much better than that. Sneijder is good but is playing at close to his full potential. Ozil will probably improve playing in the premiership in the next 2 to 3 years. If he is the only player united sign ill be very happy.

Posted by Fahad on 07/09/2010

SAF should go for muslera, the young uruguain keeper, ozil, benzema and sneijder. Offload diouf! He's got no future at united!

Posted by Azemaizan Othman on 07/11/2010

hernandez are good players when he played for mexico in south africa..he could be shine at old traford next season..kick away berbatov from m.u

Posted by Ree on 07/11/2010

Rooney was only as good as those around him. The choice of captaincy (Gerard) was poor, he had a poor season, Lampard did nothing, England had no width, the younger players willing to go forward were on the bench, Those on the field are players not willing to push forward. Change the manager or there will be no progress.

Good comments I want to see a team at Old Trafford that want to play and win for the club not themselves. It is time to unload the dead beats and users and not buy anymore one more day wonders. Focus on youth and lets get football back as a sport not a business.

Posted by art on 07/11/2010

one more point as i sit and watch the closing ceromonies i hope the England team are hanging their collective heads in shame for not putting more effort into their responsibility of our great nation being fittingly represented

Posted by Raheel on 07/12/2010

I can see Ferguson relying on players coming through the clubs' youth team. Man utd have reasonable funds to bring in foreign talent but Ferguson sees no need for that. Nobody expected man utd to come in second and fight for the league title till the last game of the season. Tevez and Ronaldo gone but yet, they pushed chelsea till the last game. I think Man utd will win something during the 2010/2011 season. Few years later and they will be a major force in Europe.

Posted by Abby on 07/12/2010

Even without tevez and ronaldo, chelsea need to play their best ever season in decade to become a champion with a single point margin......

Posted by Robert on 07/12/2010

Ozil, Mueller, and Dzeko should be their targets and like others have said, Muslera once Edwin retires. Off-loading Berbatov, Anderson, and sending Diouf out on loan. Sneijder is good but Ozil will be better at the same age.

Posted by ahmed amirali on 07/13/2010

united should go for a defender, midfielder and a striker that should b fabio contrao of portugal, mesut ozil of germany n karim benzema of france

Posted by Wandi on 07/13/2010

It seems there is no money at Old trafford. Lets remember that we bought young players at good prices already: Tosic,Smalling, Hernandez. I think Mesut Ozil wud be better but he would come with a price-Anderson. Lets offload Hargreaves- we never gave Saha all the time so why him? Nani improved at the end of the period. am looking forward to Fletcher`s influence next season.

Posted by Mohale on 07/14/2010

United needs creativity and pace in the midfield, rooney's brilliance and a few own goals saved us last season. Mesut Ozil and Benzema would bring something extra that Scholes and Fletcher do not have. Offload Anderson, Carrick, Hargreaves and Berbaflop..

i wan thank all the manutd player who made it to the world cup in SA,give more credit to ji sung park, the new no nonses scoring machine hernandez, wayne did his best just that heskey is old to play along with him.we waiting for the leaque to start.

Posted by yomi on 07/14/2010

muller will be agood buy

Posted by Olive Chizyuka on 07/19/2010

Rooney was completely out of sorts however, this can also be attributed to a number of factors 1 he is not yet fully fit from the injury that messed up United's credentials, 2 He knows his livelihood is at United and wouldn't risk another injusry at the expense of the club 3 and most of all he did not have the incisive services he gets from Nani, Valencia and or Giggs He would come from deep in pass and run forward expecting the ball to come United style and the service was not just there.

I never quite wremad to Baggio as he was clearly a little too much in love with himself (although he did have one of the best nicknames in football), but was a huge fan of Stoichkov and also Boban of Croatia. This really was a golden era for playmakers.

Posted by Avinash on 02/27/2012

I had silamir feelings towards Roberto Baggio post Italia '90. Up until he quit the game I always hoped that Chelsea might offer him a decent pension in return for a couple of years at the Bridge.
