Manchester United

Regular readers of this column will know all about The Crinkleys. They are a group of curmudgeonly old United fans made up of my Dad and his school mates who I often attend home matches with. One of their catchphrases, no doubt chiselled from decades of watching the team, is "they make us suffer". My goodness they did that tonight at Old Trafford.

Kai Wayne could have defended better than we did against CSKA and I’m tempted to draft him into the team for Sunday. There is a reason why you rebuild teams, a reason why you bring in new faces and, I suspect, it is the same reason that no team has won more than three league titles on the trot. Desire.

We lost to Liverpool, who are utterly woeful at the moment, because they wanted it more. Looking at the match against the Russians I felt that we looked complacent for large periods. It is telling that Valencia and Owen, the only two guys who haven’t been part of a championship winning squad yet, did some of our best running.

My finger is not pointing at anybody particularly for the opener. CSKA worked their goal well and the finish was pretty Roy of the Rovers. Fair play. Owen’s goal was the product of him continually finding the right positions. It is not quite as if he only needs one chance to score but he’ll be around when goals are about.

Short lived that turned out to be though. Krasic is obviously a fairly decent player but he is no Maradona. To score that goal with Brown, Evans and Fletcher looking admiringly on must have made him feel like el Diego though. I can only assume that they were mesmerised by how his hair danced in the wind. Either that, or they were having a “who can defend the crappest competition”. The result was a tie.

I am deeply ashamed that we conceded the third to a free-kick I was taught when I was nine. United have produced less clean sheets this season than a YMCA in Detroit. On this evidence, it is easy to see why. Tactically we are lacking something huge at the moment. Like a plan of some kind. At all.

United escaped but we certainly didn’t trip the light fantastic. Being able to pull out a draw from that position shows the team has character. It just needs to show it an awful lot more at the weekend. When we played in the last ten minutes we showed great ability and slick movement. This year we do not have a defensive side and need to really go for it in all games.

There were some positives to take from the game, Gary Neville can still cross a ball, Macheda has the kind of skill that tells me he will become a seriously top player and for the first quarter of the match Valencia looked like a very comfortable Champions League winger. But the United verdict after tonight is quite simply, ‘must try harder’. Drogba must be licking his lips.

Your dad sounds like a pretty good judge to me.

Has Edwin been taking goalkeeping lessons from Ben Foster? The first and the third were very good finishes but both were very saveable.

I'm afraid Michael Owen has gone, largely. It was obvious from his first appearance that he has lost a couple of yards of pace but that doesn't necessarily stop you from being a good striker (does it, Teddy?) but his clunking first touches and mistimings are pure Diego Forlan. I think he actually did an air shot last night didn't he.

We were a mixture of the Past-its (Gary, Scholesey, Edwin) the Not-Theres-Yet (Macheda, Fabio, Jonny Evans) and the Never-Will-Bes (Nancy).

But, hey, it's a result.

And remember the French World War I general who radio'd back to base 'My right flank is overrun, my left flank has been decimated, my centre is destroyed, I shall attack'.

I wouldn't be surprised if we won on Sunday.

I think give Owen some time and space to run at his own pace, he'll prove otherwise to his critics. Like how Berba has done us proud - the same 'us' who screams "Sell his ass off".

As a fellow Crinkley I can only agree with the Grimace (except perhaps that bit about being a pretty good judge...) Not "pretty" in a million years!

On the first goal my newspaper suggests that VDS's attempt to save was like "the actions of a man trying to wave a taxi down in the rain knowing the cab will not stop". Not having seen the game I was at least spared the full horror of our wayward defence.

But I also worry about our attack. Hitting posts and just missing the target are very acceptable if a few of them go in as well. Our shots-to-goals ratio doesn't look too hot, with or without Rooney, and I am yet to be convinced that Berbatov is our 20-30 goals a year saviour. Owen has indeed lost his pace (and knows it) but unlike Teddy he is not very tall so won't get those key headers in. Maybe he just needs games. Maybe the games need to be with the likes of Barnsley.

I read that Giggs and Vidic will be back for Chelsea. I predict a team set up not to lose that one.

Krasic could've walked through for the second goal. Scholsey has lost it, for me. At least valencia's improving. Even our passing is getting from bad to worse.

Worst of all, even when our attack isn't gelling, we can't frustrate opponenets with superior defending. Missing midfield + Leaky defence = Ancelotti's Dream.

I think the team is failing to employ personnel properly Berbatov and Owen will deliver the goals Rooney was better on left wing but Obertan will probably claim in due course. Giggs should be used to steady the mid field. the defence is not the problem it is losing the ball in midfield, man utd is well known for laying siege in the opposition defence not what we are currently witnessing such things often and the attack is coming back with a low goal return. we are behind wolfsburg, chelsea, arsenal on goal difference. i am sure the tide wll change probabaly after the loss at the bridge. waiting for the players to make bids for player of the year on the pitch

A captain goes down with his ship, but I am sure the captain will plug the whole in the boat before it sinks.

I am no football expert, but as a habitual watcher of all the United games I have a nagging suspicion there is a leak below the water line (with potential to become a huge hole)- we are leaking goals (soft goals), wasting balls in the midfield and taking three touches to shoot. Am I overly pessimistic?

These Russians showed heart, but they are not close to the technical proficiency of Chelsea and I suppose any of the four top sides in the Premier league.

Let's hope Chelsea is not at the top of their game and we can really lift our game to that illusive level of cohesion where Owen is not so regularly totally surprised by the through ball. Otherwise your Dad can make himself ready for an angina in the not too distant future.

In the final analysis it is still only a game with all the ups and downs and in-betweens without which it would be really boring.

ManU could still lose both remaining games, and if CSKA beats Wolfsburg, we could have ManU, CSKA and Wolfsburg tied on 10points, and ManU cud lose out on qualification by goal difference. Why are most reports claiming that ManU are through to KO phase??

Posted by kkengvib 2 weeks, 1 day ago

@ cmlee...

i think head 2 head records take precedence over goal difference in the group stage, right?... so in the case that Utd lose their remaining two games, we would still have a superior h2h record against CSKA Moscow (a win and a draw)?

.........

just to add, totally agree with Mark in the article... i haven't been impressed with any of our overall performances in games this season (with maybe exception of Spurs match)... we're gonna have to turn in an excellent performance this weekend to come away with anything...

Goal diff doesnt count. the head-to-heads do. man utd have won and drawn with CSKA, so man utd will always be ranked above them in the group stages. goal diff only matters if even head-to-heads are even.

Posted by cmlee 2 weeks, 1 day ago

head-to-head only counts when 2 teams are tied on points. But when u have 3 teams tied on 10 points, then goal difference will take precedence over head-to-head.
